Animal/Hospital Entrance (West, Coliseum)
The western entrance to the inner grounds of the Coliseum wasn’t quite the same as the other three entrances, with the single exception of the white marble pillars that created the perimeter of the Coliseum. Here, the two statues were those of Carmelya and Diana. Obviously, whoever had decided to build the arena had some sort of liking towards Diana and whatever unknown artist it had been who had carved the statues. Inside, it was very much like at the other entrances; parks, waterfalls and the gardens that supplied food to the entire Coliseum. Another difference presented itself here though, there were two entrances in the inner grounds, one which led below and from whence bad smells were coming. There was another one as well, this one was at ground level and the smells of herbs and old blood came from that one. Eight guards, instead of five, were guarding these two entrances. These too seemed fairly experienced and stood both straight and still. In a flash though, they would be ready to fight and it would be a fight that couldn’t be won by any lone individual.
From the entrance that went downwards, smells could smelt, noises could be heard and darkness was all that could be seen. The guards didn’t allow anyone uncertified to pass through, notifying them that “This is only for those who have business to do with the animals, if you don’t, please leave, if you do, please show your pass.” Whoever knew what was down there, it could be a fierce lion, a band of wild dogs or perhaps, if the spectators were really lucky, a scaled creature, saurid or dracon. It didn’t quite matter to anyone who didn’t have permission to pass, because the guards were very stubborn about seeing a pass before allowing anyone to enter. No pass, no entry. Of course, where one could get such a pass was a different matte altogether.
Then there was the second entrance, located to the right of the other one. Through this one, many beds could be seen. The beds themselves were perfectly clean, but the air definitely wasn’t. Blood and ill-smelling herbs could be picked up by one’s senses. Several nurses and some clergymen, also healers at the same time, were walking around, and getting ready for the load of wounded and dead that would come after the day’s fight. It was only fortunate for them that not every day included fighting. Herbs were collected from the gardens in the inner grounds and then stored in the healer’s quarters either in baskets or in small jars that were stored in closets. Sharp scalpels were also present, in case somebody had gotten a rock up underneath their skin and several different needles with threads were also there. Magic was the most common form of healing for the most severe of cases, but all else had to be done naturally.
Without much delay, an elven nurse was quick to approach whoever entered and ask “Serale, do you seek treatment for your wounds? Or perhaps you wish to work here and aid those poor souls that get wounded for the sake of honour sometimes… though mostly riches.” She seemed to be abhorred by the fact that some people were willing to risk their lives to such a degree for the sake of so little money.
