The Olympian Defenders Handbook

Olympian Defenders Handbook

1: Opening Message

Serale Recruit,
This first message welcomes you to the Olympian Defenders (from here on, referenced as the Defenders). This branch of the military prides itself in being able to deploy on land and / or at sea. The Defenders have a long tradition of striving to be the best military unit to do this, and have a long list of feats that prove this statement as true. In enlisting with the Defenders you will be expected to uphold this tradition.

Do not be fooled into thinking that this branch of the Eunisian military is only classed as a naval force. During training with the Defenders, you will be given basic training in land based and naval-based tactics. It is the belief of the commander of this unit that all recruits should be able to deploy in any situation.

The Defenders expect you to apply yourself to the training that you will be given so that you can become part of the best military division in the realm of Alleria. The Defenders demand that you give of your best, with dedication to your regiment, your squad, and your fellow soldiers.

If you work hard and train well, then you will become part of the best, The Olympian Defenders.

Serale and Welcome

Admiral Unerid Zao

Section 3

The training and the positions available in the Squad

As you start as a recruit in the Olympian Defenders it should be noted that the training that you will go through is hard and is meant to give you the correct start in to the military life. Be under no preconceptions, the life you have chosen in the defenders is not going to be an easy pastime. You will be expected to train hard and long. Also during this time you will be taught some of the tactics involved in land and naval-based warfare.

a) Recruit Training

Basic Dagger and basic training in the weapon of your choice, Basic Land and Sea faring Tactics, Basic First Aid
You will be able to choose from the following weapons: sword, axe, longbow, crossbow, halberd, and spear.

Once you have successfully completed the basic training then you will be promoted to the rank of marine (one) in the Olympian Defenders.

b) Compulsory Training for all positions:
As a marine (one) in the defenders you will train in Basic Law. You will also continue in physical training.
Once you have attained the rank of marine (one) you have a number of different avenues of training available to you. Depending on the type of career you want to choose within the Defenders, there will be a training path associated with the choice you have made. The training of Land and Sea based tactics will be taught to those individuals that attain a promotion to a non-commissioned officer level.
The following Military soldier training is available. The rankings of the training are the prerequisite training to be completed before the soldier can be attached to one of the units. Once attached to the military unit then additional training in the various aspects can be attained up to Advanced level. Expert and Master level training can only be attained in one weapon.
The sections below describe the duties or rolls of the various types of soldiers and the training required.

Archer:

The roll of the Archer in warfare is an important one. The archers are normally positioned close to the front line and are used to supply a barrage of arrows at the on-coming enemy. Archers are also effective if positioned on the flanks of the line, where they would be able to direct, or force the opposition into formations they would not want to form, thus making them easier to attack. Archers are also good for attacking Cavalry ranks from far off and any un-armoured soldiers. Archers are also effective as a guard being able to pick off individuals as they approach a walled off area.
In the Defenders an Archer’s roll is for use on land, and at sea. The archers are used as the first strike units as described in the paragraph above, along with the artillery. Archers at Sea are able to attack the opposing ships with fire arrows that can attack the sails of the ship. If the Archer unit have a sorcerer available they can deliver arrows that have been imbued with arcana to deliver a powerful effect on the enemy.

Insignia – 2 crossed arrows
Prerequisites:
Basic Long Bow, Basic bow / arrow making
Scout / Look out / Covert Operations:
This is normally a small unit of soldiers that have been specially trained to enable them to track, survive extremes, camouflage themselves, to enable them to gain as much information about the target, as possible. They would also be involved such operations as infiltration of enemy camps, espionage, assassinations, and counter intelligence and other such operations. Scouts / Lookouts in the Defenders, as with the other available units, are both land and sea based. The Scouts would also be used to manoeuvre single or double person row boats, to enable scouting on positions and other vessels from a sea based location. The covert operations unit would also be applicable to those who have experience in the more shady aspects of society, as the operations may involve actions that would go against the normal

Insignia – 2 Crossed Daggers with an eye located centrally above them.
Prerequisites: (3 out of the 5 items minimum)
Basic Tracking, Basic Camouflage, Basic Orienteering, Basic Stealth, Basic Survival , Basic unarmed combat, Basic Lock picking.
(Optional) Basic Long Bow

Marksman / Sharpshooter

The Marksman is a soldier who will be used to provide precision attacks against the enemy. At sea, the marksman would be used to attack the enemy through Portholes and through Crows nests. The marksman would be used on land to attack the enemy location’s look out posts, hit guard towers, and shuttered battlements.

Insignia – an upright Crossbow.
Prerequisites: Basic Crossbow

Artillery

The roll of the Artillery in warfare is one of delivering a powerful first strike or of continuous bombardment of an enemy stronghold or ship. In conflict the artillery are based behind the front line firing into the oncoming enemy.
In The Defenders the artillery are capable of being deployed on land or at sea. When used on land, units can be used against strongholds or buildings and in siege situations fire projectiles against the opposition, weakening defences before attacks from the other units. The artillery at sea is used to attack the opposing enemy ships with large weapons. The use of an elementalist can add to the attack by making orbs of the elements to fire at the opposing side. This has been used to devastating effect by the Defenders in the past and in some cases has led to an enemy surrendering before the ships have come to close quarters. The orbs of the elements are also very effective against land-based units as well. In short, a well-timed and directed attack by the artillery units can decimate an opposing force and lead to an easier fight for the other squads of the Defenders.

Insignia – 3 Cannon Balls in a triangle.
Prerequisites: Basic Engineering, and Basic Logistics

Infantry:

This is the main line attack force of the military. The infantry comprise of soldiers who with various disciplines, i.e. Swords, Pole arms, Axes, would be trained to work as a cohesive group, which, when ordered correctly, would be a very tough fighting machine. The Infantry of the Defenders are well trained, able to change formation at a command. Infantry are also able to withstand direct charges from cavalry when using pole arms. Because the Defenders are sea, as well as land based, the infantry also acts as marine soldiers in the squadron. The captain of the squadron would lead the part of the infantry unit as a boarding party. The Defender Infantry would also have thaumaturgists, and elementals as part of their squad to help with healing and offensive attacking manoeuvres.

Insignia – Parallel Spears
Prerequisites:
Basic Bladed Weapon, Basic Shield, Basic unarmed Combat, Basic Survival

4: Additional Training Skills

As you continue to serve the Defenders there are additional training courses available that may help in the roll, within a unit, you want to perform. This training, as with all other training can be taken during the time you spend within the defenders. The only limitation on the training taken is, the fact, that to progress in any training, you need to be able to practise the skill, to ensure you become proficient, and also not to lose the ability to do something else.

Training Skills
Blacksmith
Weapons Master
Supplies Officer and Resource Management
Ship Building
Herbal Medicine
Engineering / gadgetry
Training and recruitment
Hunter / Cook / Fishing

5: General Information about the Defenders and the Military

As soon as you join the Defenders you will realise that, as in all military institutions, there is a hierarchy and chain of command. It is expected that a soldier of any ranking acknowledge those above their rank by saluting the officer in question. This rule does not apply when the meeting takes place and either you, or the officer in question, are in civilian attire.
Bringing the straight fingers of the right hand up to the right eyebrow area of the face performs a Salute; the hand should be close to horizontal. The elbow should be away from the body in line with the shoulder. This position should be kept until the officer has either acknowledged the salute, or until the officer is no longer in view.
The defenders do require the use of soldiers that have been trained in forms of Arcana. If a Marine shows the ability, or the inclination, to the Arcanic disciplines then the Defenders would be willing to sponsor the training of the marine through the continuation of their training. Those individuals interested in this training opportunity should contact their Commanding Officer about the possibility of paid leave, or military funding for such endeavours.
As with the other Allerian Military organisations promotions are available to those individuals that show improvements in the following areas.
- Teaching Skills
- Feats accomplished as a leader of a team
- Contributions to the Olympian community
- Extraordinary/Exceptional circumstances

if you, as a member of the Defenders step out of line then you will be punished, depending on the severity of the crime. Punishments include:
- Light labour
- Average labour
- Heavy labour
- House arrest
- Suspension without pay
- Demotion
- dishonourable Discharge

The list of ranks and pay structures employed the Defenders is as follows.

Uniforms

On joining the Defenders a recruit is given uniforms. There are 2 basic types of uniform used in the Defenders. Everyday uniforms: all black with metal buttons on the Tunic. And a Dress uniform: Turquoise cloak, Turquoise tunic, metal buttons engraved with the Eunesia coat of arms, Black Trousers. Boots are issued as standard and are worn with both uniforms. The dress uniform is to be kept in the highest condition, as this is an important part of the dress code of the defenders. A Navy Blue rank insignia sash, attached to the left shoulder of the uniform, shows the soldier’s unit and officer status. Due to the fact that the Defenders are a land and sea based military regiment, and that we are located very close to the sea, then; all metal of any given weapon, uniform, armour, should be polished and cleaned to ensure that the salt water doesn’t corrode them.

6: Mission Statement:

Historically, the Eunisian Navy's main focus, in any of its incarnations, has been to keep the waters surrounding the Nesocratic Federation free of threats. The livelihood of the region is based in the waters and in the fishers and merchants that travel its expanses. With the disbanding of the Imperial Navy in more recent times, our job has expanded to include defence from pirates or invading nations that would seek to destroy not only the Province but the Empire of Alleria

7: The Olympian Defender Code

You are a volunteer in the Olympian Defenders. This Military group has a long and distinguished tradition. You will work hard and diligently to uphold this tradition, with honour in all that you do.
Every Defender is your brother at arms. There is to be no distinction between races, sexes, and religious beliefs. Every Defender deserves, and gives, respect to each other. This respect is also given to those of a higher rank. Each Defender is to remain loyal to the Defenders, willing to go to the end, in defence of another of their comrades in arms. A Defender will never leave a wounded comrade in arms on the field of battle.
Each Defender upholds the Laws of Olympia and the Realm. Each citizen is to be treated with respect. This includes those met on the field of battle, and any Prisoners of War taken.
Each Defender is to take pride in everything that they do. The uniforms, arms, and armour, given to each Defender are to be taken care of, to ensure that an impeccable appearance, and display, is apparent at all times.

8: Oath

The oath is a learned requirement of each Defender. You may be asked at anytime, by any officer to repeat this oath.
