BelegElle's Training
Quote:
|
"What do I think are the basic principles of being a ranger? Well. My idea's of it are to protect the land, help the land, and in turn have it assist me. I've grown up in the wildlands, Sir..And I've found the Wild nurtured me into the man I am. It helped me survive, and I shall do the same thing in return. I'm not to familiar with the principles of a ranger, though I do have my own principles..And I hope that those are indeed enough."
|
After listening to BelegElle, Tev added, "We have Rangers to preserve the balance of both plant and animal life and to safeguard human life as we are able to by ourselves, or by assisting military units. Rangers serve the local community by being guardians of the forest and it's inhabitants. Additionally, we watch over and extend assistance to farmers and others who work the land.
"Tell me what that means to you".

::He would yawn softly then, a fist coming to his lips as he stifled such a physical expression, his eyes left upon Tev. Perhaps he would get to rest tonight? His head shook slightly, before lips parted to answer..Trying to hide the fact of his weariness..:: "It means to me, that as Rangers, we protect more then just the land..But anyone, and everything whom does no harm to it.."::He bit gently at his lip then, awaiting Tevs response::

The help that I mentioned is twofold. First we are ready to help those who look after human life and maintain the security of the city. Most of the time they manage just fine by themselves. In that case we leave them to tend to their own duties. It is only when called, or when it becomes obvious that help is needed that we step in. It is not a routine duty for Rangers.
"Then we get to the farmers and others who work the land. We have much in common with them. The farmers realize that they must nurture their land and the livestock in order to get production year after year. Both the crops and the livestock require care. The same goes for the woodsman. He harvests the trees but he must take care to avoid damaging those that are left. When removing trees from the forest, there must be minimal harm to the undergrowth.
"Can you think of any other examples of people who work the land, with whom we would cooperate?"

"The alchemists...Doctors..~druids~..::He'd sniff some as he looked about..His first, and foremost duty was to the land. Why? He was a very spiritual man in his own right, and did not believe in the protecting of those who worked the land..he protected people on a normal basis, whether they worked the land or not..And it was obvious he felt this way, despite BelegElle simply nodding in agreement, blue hues scanning around the training grounds, before finally coming to settle upon Tev himself..Listening to his instruction..For unlike many people, Tev was one he actually respected..A master ranger who was nice to new recruit..How could he not respect him?::

Tev could not fault BelegElle for being all too inclusive. After all, Rangers were protectors of all lawful individuals. However, it is time to get to the point.
"Alchemists and Doctors are not people who work the land. However, Druids have an even closer relationship with Nature than we do. They are capable of shaping it with spells. We often work hand in hand with Druids. It was Druids who built this Ranger Hall.
"The examples I was looking for you to mention are people like Hunters, Trappers, Fisherman and their like. These people live off the land and they are required to show a proper respect for the land. For that reason, we will help them if help is needed.
"The next point is that the Ranger is an exemplary citizen. He practices loyalty to the Emperor and all duly appointed authority. Tell me just what that means to you."

"Alchemists and doctors do indeed use the land, sir..Herbs are a major part of their occupation, especially of the alchemists..Though I understand what your were referring to...And as far as what does showing loyalty to the authority mean to me..I cannot comment on such a thing..My loyalty does not go far beyond protecting those that my duty entails me to. A title to me, is not so demanding of respect, in my opinion..It is the actions of a man, that bring me to have loyalty..For loyalty without reason, is simply lying to thyself..": id Beleg make any sense to Tev? Perhaps not..BelegElle had many deep thoughts, and wasn't a poet by any means..He had a hard time expressing his feelings outwardly..Especially when it came to being in words...And instead he bit at his bottom lip, seeing if Tev was disappointed and unapproving of his answer::

"A Ranger is obligated to maintain order in his own surroundings. The surroundings of the Ranger are the forest, the wilderness, the farms and the adjacent community. We are part of that community and we have an obligation to support it. Narim is within the scope of our responsibilities. Narim is part of the Confederation of Sherian, our responsibility extends to it as well. Going a step further, the various Provinces are joined together as the Allerian Empire. The Empire is of course ruled by the Emperor. Thus we owe allegiance to the Emperor.
"Several years ago there was an attack made on this area by a mass of Orcs and Goblins. We did not stop to determine whether the attack was on the Ranger Hall or the city of Narim, we joined forces and fought the common foe. When it was apparent that the enemy had greater numbers than we could handle, the Governor sent Provincial troops to assist us in defeating the foe.
"Though we usually limit ourselves to local matters, it must be remembered that we are also obligated to the overall entity and they are obligated to us."

::He'd turn to face him more properly, and though BelegElle agreed with parts of what Tev said, he felt not loyalty to the Emperor..For BelegElle was almost what you would call a "real Baijani"..However modernized...And he truly believed citizens should be allowed to live freely, without such foolish limitations..Also? He believed more or less in the fact that nature was what he wanted to protect, and NOT the city. Indeed, he fought against everything that was a civilized city such as this..But those thoughts? THey stayed with him...And thats where they would stay, for many, many years.::

Perhaps my next comments will help to clear the point that I was trying to make.
"Most dear to a Ranger are the values of human life, animal life and plant life. Affording the flora and the fauna to thrive naturally is essential. Tell me now, just what does this mean to you?
"What we are discussing now are the principles of being a Ranger. If you find that these principles do not coincide with your beliefs then perhaps you ought to re-evaluate your decision to be a Ranger. However, I hope that you can follow them"

::He'd only nod gently as he continue to speak..He hated "What do you think" type questions like that, because he truthfully had different beliefs then what the average person liked..but alas, he couldn't delay until it went away..:: "I will protect all that which is innocent. And do what my duty calls for me to do. What more can I say then that? I may not appreciate the emperor as much as you would like me too..However I assure I would give my life up, for anyone near me, be them in the right, of course."

After listening to the reply of BelegElle, Tev pondered for a moment and then responded, "I think that your attitude fits in with that of a Ranger. I do not see any problems. There aqre times that we word things differently from one another, but in the end the meanings coincide. The most important factor is the protection of innocent life. In the case of animals and plants we must take care that we do not interfere with the normal events of nature.
"Which brings us to the next point in the Principles of being a Ranger. What is most dear to a Ranger are the values of human life, animal life and plant life? Affording the flora and fauna to thrive naturally is essential to a thriving forest. Tell me just how you interpret that. Just what does that mean to you? Do these thoughts fit in with your preconceived ideas?"

"Well sir..To me, it means that to best let plant life live naturally, and to not intervene with it, is to create the greatest forests..It however works the same way towards human life..To protect innocent lives from the harms of the outside world, is to let a kingdom thrive as well..I know not whether or not that is the answer you are looking for, though that indeed is my interpretation of it."

"What this means is that we protect Human life because it is most dear to a Ranger.
"Animal life is important as well but in nature, one animal preys upon another. A human hunts an animal so that his family can survive. Plants are eaten and sometimes totally destroyed. This is part of the scheme of Nature. We watch it and we do not disrupt the normal consequences. However, should the there be an extreme swing where too many of a specie are being destroyed, then we need to act. Otherwise, as I mentioned before, we let Nature take it's course.
"Finally. we may be called upon to assist within a town when the Militia is inadequate or there is a small issue to settle. What are your comments on that?"

"My comments on that? I find that to be a good thing..However back to your views on nature. To me, a persons unreasonable destruction of nature can never be acceptable. Feeding upon them? Of course, for some plants are created for such a reason. However senseless destruction of ~Anything~ should be stopped...But yes..I find it my duty to defend any that I possibly can. To not do so, is denying my duty to the world"

Tev smiled and said, "My congratulations to you. That completes your requirements for being ranked as an Archer. So, when I next write in the Record Book of the Narim Ranger Hall, I shall enter that you have advanced to Archer. Now it is time to start you off toward becoming a Woodsman. I think that we ought to cover healing next. When you were in Natura did you receive any training in Healing? At one time the Natura Rangers were very proficient at healing.
"While we go though healing we can include a smattering of Herblore, just enough to cover what you will be using. Why don't you go and refresh yourself with a drink before we start?"
