The Building that housed the Barracks is new, very new, having just been built… it was of a very economical construction and was also of a strict, utilitarian grey, the main stone a polished granite.

However, far from being ugly it possessed a strange sense of style that showed that some thought had gone into its design and the little details such as the six white marble Columns that stood at its entrance were of a pure, snowy white, and there was trimmings of the same creamy marble along the windows, around the doors and the fearsome gargoyles that loomed above with gaping mouths and outspread wings glowed with a pale, unearthly luminescence.

But for all its simple, understated beauty, the Barracks were clearly designed by a military mind… the Columns of marble out the front, the key beauteous feature, stood in a row of six in front of a pair of huge, heavy doors that were constructed of thick stone, the heavy granite slabs a full two feet thick and sheathed in steel panels an inch thick.

The Columns, so beautiful and so large, stood conveniently in front of the door… just far enough away for the doors to swing out and open (pushing on these doors would merely close them tighter) and also the Columns stood close enough to the doors, and close enough together, to effectively hamper any people who would fancy using a battering ram.

Beautiful hedges of roses surrounded the walls of this heavily fortified building, placed upon the top of a hill as it had been, and some enterprising ivy plants were already beginning to grow up the walls.
Inside, there was a moderately large foyer and beyond that you could see the training arena… the circular centre where the Guards practiced their weapons and their arts of defence, safe within the large, octagonal walls of the Barracks.

The rooms and different levels were accessed by two spiraling staircases that stood either side of the foyer, coiling up and into the ceiling… the offices of the Guard’s Command were at the top level, beyond the arena and at the back of the building.


Recruitment

A new note, written in a smooth, cursive hand, had been put up on the wooden board that stood to the left of the Columns… the Mystique Recruitment Drive had begun, it seemed.

The Notice Read;

Join the Guard today!
For the defense and the support of the citizens and mages of Mystique, dedicated persons who would be happy to stay within the city of Mystique and within the Lauryl Province for an extended amount of time are needed.

Excellent pay, room and board supplied as well as all meals and laundry… prospects for promotion within the ranks of the Guard are very high for the dedicated recruit.

Free training is provided… a Basic Course in the use of a Gladius sword and also the weapon of your choice.
