Greenbroad is unknown and forgotten
Initiate Longsword

First Brightening of Immanis, Spring in Era II of the Celestine Mandate, Era XIV Post Fractum.

Greenbroad sat at the steps of the temple of Aslan waiting for the paladin that was to train him. It was a quiet spring day... the sun was out and the birds were singing.

The paladin walked out from inside the temple and placed a leather rucksack with a reinforced handle and a chain link loop on top of it he then looked to Greenbroad.

"Well, well, I was half expecting you not to show up this morning, pup. Well pick up the bag and Lets be off You want training and your going to get it the same Way I did when I was young."

Without looking back to see if the pup Greenbroad picked up the satchel the old Dorin was walking already towards the cities main gates, His breastplate glinting in the sun his cape flowing on the breeze behind him he looked like a thing out of some fantastic dream.

Once outside the Gates he walked off on a small dirt trail it was about an hour later the weight of the heavy rucksack that Greenbroad should have been toting was well past digging into his shoulder when they came up to a dorin packs encampment. There were pups many much younger then he and even a communal lodge and a farm that looked like it was growing quite well. The Old Dorin walked up to one of the young males, who had his Graw'Lak dagger displayed.

"Warrior, I have earned this for the sake of my pack see that it is used as is needed." he then handed over a bag full of gold crowns and turned to Greenbroad.

"Look around you Pup this is my blood and bones my pack, you harm one of them and not even the etherian deities with all there dark powers will be able to save you from my wrath. And the cute one that works in the Aediles office is off limits too."

With that he then walked over to the packs training area. It looked to be just a simple field fenced off from the rest of the area. The ground inside had many large and small stones even some logs. There was a leather pale hung by the rope handle over the fence post. There were even bloodstains on the ground and the place smelled of an old battle.

"Well you will be staying here in the bachelors hut." he indicated a hut about the size of the communal hut, as a bunch of the pups and a few of the females began to gather around Greenbroad and the so far nameless Paladin.

"This is Pack Lashak'Garee Na Aslan'Graw Na Mystique. Since you are not a member of our pack you can expect to get a lot of guff and the worst jobs for a male pup. However since your here to train then you will be trained now open up that rucksack and take out the wooden box inside it. Then place it here on this half log and we will go over what’s inside so that you can understand the sword, once you get that down if I think your worthy we will go to actual use of the weapon. Then you will go on a hunt and Kill an animal and bring it back with the sword only. It will be a solitary hunt and out in the wilds not the city. You will be watched but not assisted or hindered in any way. It will be a test. When you return from that depending on the report I get back we may continue or I may have you go on a different quest. Do you understand me so far?"

Greenbroad followed the paladin to the encampment. He listened to the paladin and after about 15 minutes of talking, Greenbroad took off the rucksack from his shoulder and placed it on the half log. "Okay," Greenbroad said, "Let's discuss what's inside of it."

The paladin looked at Greenbroad and took the box out of the rucksack and then placed it on the table and shoved the rucksack off the table and onto Greenbroads toe.

"I said the box pup next time listen, Cause thats mild pain compared to what can happen." He then opened the box. Inside was what looked liek a swordd with a great deal of asembly required.

"Now pup we have here a sword in pieces, Your going to practice putting the sword together and naming off each piece and every night your going to loveingly oil and polish each piece. You with me so far?"

The old Dorin Paladin eye Greenbroad he expected the young male was bussy looking at some of teh females getting ready to come into there first heats. But that was the way of youth. They generally had little else on there minds durring mating season. The old dorin started speaking in dorin now since there were no humans about and it would not be rude to them.

The Old Dorin Pointed at the balde of the sword. "This is the the blade, Notice its is over 16 (32 cm) inches in length, The blade length can be up to five(1.9 Meters) feet or more. This sword is called a braod sword, It is so called becuase the blade is three (6 cm) inches wide and the blades total length is 3 feet (1 Meter)."

The Old Dorin Paladin then pointed at the Cross Guard. "This nifty little Piece is one that you replace the most often on most swords Its called the cross guard. Its job is to prevent an enemys blade from sliding down yours and severing your fingers. The cross guard must be of high quality Steel and be no less than 1/2 (1.1 cm) Inch around. This is generaly enough to stop most swords from cutting through it. If you have to ever use or replace a cross guard you need anpther lesson in sword fighting or your opponent is being particularly nasty."

The Old Dorin then pointed to the Cross Piece. "This is a cross piece Not all swords have one but the best always do. This part is used to hold the Cross gaurd up off the Grip of handle and also is a secondary though less effective cross gaurd. This piece also stops teh handel or grip from splitting on the sword blade or cross guard, It normally has a piece of leather inserted infront of it on cheaper swords to help lessen the shock of a parry, A quality balde will not have leather infront of the cross piece."

Next he pointed at a metal rod with a hole in the center. "This brings us to the grip or handel. This is a two part piece First you have the Handel It slides on behind the cross piece or cross guard and then is wrapped in leather or cloth to insure a firm grip. If it is wraped in leather then the leather is allowed to soak overnight before wraping this insures that when the leather dries it has a very tight grip on the handle and will not allow it to slip. I prefer Leather griped handles as they can be used with gauntlets where cloth wrapped handles can only be used with bare hands or leather gloves, The cloth slips against metal gauntlets."

That brings us to the next piece of the sword. [b]"This is the pommel sometimes called the handle wieght or counter wieght. It is also the piece that most of the time will hold the whole sword together and make sure that the hilt and cross guard ect are not loose. The best pomels can be adjusted by turning them in a padded vise. But not all pommels are adjustable, Cheaper swords will generally not have good pommel adjustment as the pommel is threaded through with the back tines of the blade wich are then bent over and splaid around it by the smith to make sure of a tight perminent fit."

Now we come to the next part of the sword. he turned and took Greenbroad by his Right arm. He then pointed at greenbroads fingers. " These are the fingers they are used to grip hold and help manuver the sword. In a quality sword the fingers will be strong and sturdy. That makes for a tight and hard grip."

He then pointed at the forearm of Greenbroad. "This is the forearm this is where a sword gets most of its manuverability a strong forearm makes for a fast and deadly sword. It is just as important as a sharp blade."

He then pointed to greenbroads Bicept. "This is the bicept of the arm it is from here that a sword blow gets its power. A strong Bicept is key to penetrating thick hides and armors that some creatures wear. Though sometimes with training and practice one can hit through the weak points in armor."

He then looked a Greenbroad. "Well pup, I have not got all Era. What are you waiting for let see how much attention you were paying."

He then listened carefully to see if greenbroad was able to recite what he had just been shown.

"The sword is a broad sword. the blade is 16 inches long ansd 3 inches wide. The blade length could also be 5 feet long. The braod sword is 3 feet long in total." The young dorin said.

"The cross guard is there to make sure your fingers aren't cut off. It is also the peice you'll have to replace often.

"The cross peice is also a secondary cross guard and the peice that holds the cross guard off of the handle.

"The handle is usually wrapped in cloth or leather for a firm grip. Leather works best for gauntlets while cloth is best for bare hands or leather gloves.

"The pommel will most of the time hold the entire sword together. The best pomels can be adjusted by turning them in a vise."

Greenbroad then looked at his fingers. "My fingers will manuver the sword, they should be strong and sturdy. The sword gets most of its manuverability from my forearm. And my bicep gives the sword most of it's power. The stronger a bicep is, the more penetration power it has."

Greenbroad looked at the paladin and asked, "Am i correct?"

The paladin looked at him and His ears sagged a bit and a slight curl of his lips told Greenbraod he was not fully pleased with the answer.

"Well Pup at least you seemed to catch half of what I told you. Now try watching this time I want you to beable to identify the peices not just tell me what they are and what they do. the females will be around after the lesson so look where I point this time."

"Now i don't mind that you put it into your own words but by the grace of Aslan do not be afraid to touch the sword it won't bit you yet, that part comes next." The old dorin snarled at Greenbroad in a way that told him he had a severe lack of patients and about no tolerance for not paying attention.

He then once more listened to Greenbroad and watched him carefully. The truth was that he was possibly slightly pleased that teh young pup had gotten as much as he did right which was probably why he had not reinforced his teaching method with a good swift kick to Greeenbroads behind since in most people in the old dorins estimation the back side was the shortest routes to there brain.
