Malice Corridors (Malice PC's only, Open)

A battle over, but Duncan wasn’t going to go out and fiddle with the camps just yet, instead he planned on seeing just what was around Malice; since so far his food had been provided merely by askance and on demand, now he planned to find somewhere else to get it, not that it hadn’t been good but he missed his wandering around…and few would cause him problems even in Malice.

So, dressed in his moderately rich green and black regalia, sword at hip, Duncan made his way through the corridors of Malice tower, black gloves in hand, those strange pure blue, pupil devoid eyes watching everyone he passed for some sort of recognition. Since in the end, generally speaking people just ignored him, he’d come out of a meeting with Magnus and the other magi after all, that kind of news travelled and such people were left alone, fear perhaps or merely common sense.

Thus boot heels clicked on stones as he descended spiral staircases, travelled through halls and such, the locals giving him as wide a berth as possible, those eyes in this case having their advantages where usually people looked upon them with confusion, they now saw the distinctive features as a marker; ‘leave well alone’ seemed to be the general consensus as Duncan’s eyes flickered to a window, the mage moving to it and staring out over the city and at the camps, at the constant, unending patterns of lights in the dusk sky, fires springing up around the camps or already there to ward off chill.

ooc: it's too bad pirates died. I liked that meeting. Oh well, here's to new beginnings.

The outermost camps had become a great reminder of magnitude of the forces they faced, and though they had been unsuccessful in their assaults thus far, every time Zilly peered out over the battlements, out into the barren landscapes surrounding Malice, the girl couldn't help but be overcome by a sense of dread. It was as though they were in prison, for the siege...the siege had lasted so long. Though the sparkle of youth could be seen in those sharp, elven eyes, those eerie off colored eyes, too worry could be seen. Worry about Master Brachus, how he exerted himself, worry about Mi'keh and about Nal'sama. She sighed, her small shoulders shrugging laxly.

The girl was on her way home from the infirmary that evening, her responsibilities there still ample, moreso with apprenticeship to Master Brachus. With him came all his worries, and all fatigue and a share of all his responsibilities. Her very Vis had become her own greatest responsibility. Sharing it, powering the monstrous, unholy forces that powered Malice was a heavy burden, but one she accepted willingly, if only to earn the thanks so hard earned by her strange master.

Warm sunlight spilled through open windows as she strode downward, the staircase brightening her day as weary eyes cocked sideways glances out over the killing fields. She was tired of fighting, every day a battle for their very survival, their very existence. Eyes falling away, again and again her body found itself swathed in airy, fleeting sunshine before being plunged into darkness and she rounded an inner curve before repeating it all again.

Her sensitive elven ears hung low, flat, without the typical upward high upward curve, instead sticking out in a what was a tossup between funny looking a adorable. Her little, black blouse swayed back and forth with careful step, thin legs marching with uncommon courage. The peculiar, serpentine dagger at her belt sent off plenty of warning signs. She was no ordinary child. Because of that, the city no longer inspired fear within the girl, or none that could be easily seen anyway. Somewhat dull azure locks hung unkempt, creeping just past her back. She hadn't had a haircut in a long time, and with proper care, her pretty blue hair had grown rather long.

Stepping down from the last step, the girl pulled back stray strands of hair as she looked up, shielding her eyes from the sudden glare of light made more brilliant with quick strides from the shadowy corner of the staircase. The long corridor was an outer one, of course, one she frequented...but the white haired man she found before her as the glare lessened was certainly not a frequent sight.

What was with his hair? And his eyes, she gazed upon them with vague familiarity. He had peculiar eyes, the kind that matched her own, blow for blow, in soul-stealing gaze. Caught between respect for her elders and childish curiosity, she ached to question his presence, but knew better. Though she could easily upset punishment for rudeness and improper behavior, Zilly more commonly accepted it and went on, and usually avoided it altogether.

But this was different. She stopped behind him, looking sideways at his somewhat wirey figure, his gaze focused outwards, out over the dusty fields.

Pausing for but a moment longer, the girl smiled gently, "It's kind of sad, huh?" she said softly, that angelic voice breaking the deathly silence. Apparently, she was referring to the fighting that was going on.

OOC: Right, sorry this took so long heh.

IC:

“Sad and inevitable.”

Duncan agreed and amended, shaking his head, fingers tapping against the stone of the walls, then, in a moment of outlet he balled his right hand into a fist and slammed it against the wall, fortunately not punching it, just pushing, immensely irritated. He didn’t look at the girl, he didn’t need to or have to, that wasn’t the point, the point was just so ironic that there was someone there; even if they didn’t sat what they said for the same, right reasons.

“You’d think after all these months they’d have figured out that winning will cost them too much, seems they’re just too damned stupid to work it out.”

He added dourly, not turning still.

“So what do you do here? Most people seem to enjoy the destruction of a load of innocent men at the hands of a naïve few.”

Peering out the window, Zilly smiled at Duncan's distraught mannerisms. Was he really so worried about the well being of these people? Or moreover, the well-being of Maliceans? It seemed he was more concerned for the attackers than the people of Malice. Really too bad that conflict was likely inevitable, no matter what happened. On a large scale or private killings, the war would end in violence. That much had been assured by Nashkel at the very beginning of it all.

Twining small fingers together, the girl rest them behind her head in a carefree way. A facade. "I do...what I can. For master Brachus."

What a strange man...

Rae'vyn Kaldres is an upstanding Citizen
Finally, she had got away from the inside of that house. After running a few of the long corridors she slowed to a walk, catching her breath as she walked. Gryffin has studied every book in that makeshift library; eventually finding away to break whatever magic he had put on the door. Glaring at the mention of that she continued walking, eventually finding the stairs that took her up. He refused to let her out of the house now, after her disappearance on the way to the Infirmary. She mumbled some curse and continued up the stairs.

Reaching the top, eventually, Gryffin brushed back several small braids of her long black hair, tying them to keep her hair out of her eyes. Smoothing the black skirt of her dress she walked on through the maze, winding her way to another flight of stairs. She found them and climbed, getting tired as she did. She still wasn’t back to her full strength but, she was definitely on her way to it.

She reached the tower, the sun catching the unnatural blue eyes of hers and making them sparkle. She walked towards the edge and looked out. It was a great day. Sensing some people behind her she turned and looked. Seeing a small girl she looked harder, refocusing her eyes,
Zilly? Is that you?” She asked one of the two across the tower from her.

“Master Brachus?”

Duncan asked, his voice absent, devoid of either approval or disapproval, yes, well, it seemed that strange lot had their own council, their own agenda…their own apprentices. It was one thing Duncan hadn’t done yet, gone out and got an apprentice; he didn’t want one, they didn’t work for him…instead he contemplated everyone else’s and repeatedly nearly got himself killed, maybe he should settle down?

He’d been about to say ‘So your Brachus apprentice?’ or some such useless comment when another spoke, a quiet feminine voice. Duncan turned and saw Gryffin and paused for a moment, taking a hard look at the young woman before him. There was nothing nice about the expression from those pupiless blue eyes beneath the white hair and the wide brimmed, flat topped hat, nothing nice at all, not even surprise or concern.

It wasn’t hard to be completely unaffected, he’d seen enough violence and a few bruises and cuts were little compared to it, he just wondered what place the woman played in things where Zilly seemed organized and prized, not surprising given her age, a young apprentice to take over Brachus’s position, hardly likely, what about ‘her’ though?

“And what happened to you?”

Duncan asked, his right forearm still on the edge of the window, left hand resting absently on a sword hilt at his left hip, that blade tilted slightly upwards, his stance completely absent, assured, belligerent for want of a less violent word, he was the equivalent of any of the higher Malice Magi, if a little younger and less fundamentally evil, but just as confident.

The words after all more of a demand than a question, he expected an answer and planned to extract one if he didn’t get it, although he’d only use a spell the girl couldn’t know that… the words in the end had come out slightly harder than intended though, perhaps because of what he’d been doing, been forced to do by events, his conscience was entirely clear and that was the troubling part, he was happy with how he’d acted, what he’d done, becoming almost too comfortable with his position in things.

Again the conversation was interrupted, this time not completely unexpected. To Zilly and Duncan it was obvious, a swirling mass of magical energy gathered from apparently out of nowhere and quickly faded out again, leaving only a person where thin air had been before, all this happening in only a fraction of a second.

When the few sparkles of magical discharge had faded away the small crowd in the tower could see the person that was familiar to most of them. Although to Duncan his persona was new. He had a thin figure but stood well over six feet tall. His face was average, but his thin eyebrows and the shape of his ears clearly indicated Elven blood. He had long black hair which was tied back in a tail that fell almost to his hips and his green eyes searched through the tower quickly. He was wearing a black shirt with long sleeves and black pants which covered part of his black boots. His right hand was gloved with an also black leather glove. Even the cape he wore on his back was black. Amid all this black the red scarf he wore from his right shoulder to his left hip broke the whole colour theme and the complicated knot that held it all together looked as if the tailor had spent most of his creativeness on it. All these dark colours, and even the simple shortsword he wore on his hip, did not make him look any more intimidating or dangerous then as if he was wearing anything else or nothing at all. He just looked average in everything.

Brushing a lock of hair aside with his ungloved hand Mi'keh fixed his eyes on Gryffin after giving Zilly a small sideways smile. "You... Woman..." He simply said. Ignoring the others. "I don't know how you got out but I'll have someone put a better lock on the door. Now you're coming back with me, you've seen enough of Malice for today." He added, his voice not in any way threatening, simply indicating that it would be better for everyone involved if Gryffin stopped being so childish and just came with him.

Gryffin rolled her eyes and turned away from Zilly and her companion. Resting a hand on her hip she smiled at Mi’keh.
Oh yeah, you and what army is going to make me?” She turned away, looking at the may who has spoken to her. She smiled and replied,
I got on the wrong side of some people” Shrugging off she found a space against the wall and leaned on it, still grinning at Mi’keh. She knew that if he dared touch her, she’d rip off what ever body part was closest to her hand.

She turned her attention to the other two and asked,
Might I enquire to the reasons of your hiding in this tower?” she could think of no other way of putting it. She scanned over his face, committing it to her memory. Smiling she straightened,
I’m Gryffin, and what might be your name sir?” For some reason she still had a playful tone in her voice. Maybe it was just because Mi’keh was there but, she wasn’t sure. Gryffin didn’t understand why she had to act so devilishly when she was around him and others. Shrugging it off she stood silently.

“The wrong side of him?”

Duncan asked rhetorically, his absent expression becoming steadily more focused as his gaze flicked between Gryffin and Mi’keh, nodding towards the latter. Now in fact his attention was fully on the pair, right forearm moving from the window edge to rest across his belt suspiciously near that sword hilt as he leant with his back against the stone.

The Mystic, perhaps not as tall as Mi’keh wasn’t exactly intimidated, he knew the power figures in Malice and this mage wasn’t one of them, albeit mage he definitely was, a Sorcerer too and a confident one, all things worth knowing if he was going to irritate the man. Still Malicians seemed to have a fairly good idea of the power pattern in their own city, maybe this one learnt quickly?

He didn’t know why Gryffin had addressed Mi’keh so casually and almost playfully if he was indeed to blame, as seemed the case, but he was suspicious, maybe he’d just worked her over? Submission brought by violence wouldn’t be something he’d put past Malice, thus the strangely blue eyed human removed his lingering gaze from Gryffin’s wounds to focus it entirely on Mi’keh.

“She’s not going anywhere, who are you to tell her where she can or cannot go anyway?”

Duncan inquired mildly, he didn’t need to make it aggressive and didn’t bother with arrogance either, a simple, plain set of words because if Mi’keh was in Meditation, as he undoubtedly was given he’d just cast a spell, then he could see Duncan’s large Vis reserves as well as Duncan, if he’d bothered to transfer himself to Meditation, could have seen Mi’keh’s, not to mention the sword, the long Katana like blade in a cloth bound metal sheath stood out rather noticeably, no, no threats from the Mystic either, just the beginnings of an argument perhaps.

The half-Elf now fully focussed himself on Duncan. Maybe it had been overconfidence, or just plain absentmindedness, but he had not noticed the mage before. Now he did. The amounts of energy this man held were truly impressive and Mi'keh knew that he would last for seconds perhaps if it came to a direct confrontation. No matter how many tricks he had up his sleeve, which were a few, it would be of little use with these overwhelming odds. He shivered, why was it that when he improved, so did his opponents and he still faced horrors that blew his mind. Slowly he moved his gloved hand towards his belt, shoving his thumb behind it and letting it hang there, trying to be as ready as possible without being a threat. He didn't want to let it come to a confrontation between mages in a place like this. Surely Zilly was not an amateur, but she horribly lacked combat experience and he knew he would be unable to live with himself if he let anything happen to that little girl. But then again, he was responsible for Gryffin. He would either have to somehow get rid of the mage or force the woman to come back with him without a fuss, neither of which were going to be easy.

"I'm Mi'keh." He simply said to Duncan, not bothering to tell him anything more then that. "Gryffin is my responsibility, she is to return to our house or return to her cell on the lower levels." He continued with a blank face and a voice hardly trembling. Losing a prisoner would result in punishment for both him and Gryffin, but attempting this was walking on thin ice also. Again he had little choices left that led to an happy ending.

Duncan shrugged, it would have amused him to hear Mi’keh’s thoughts, mainly because they were the same he often considered, it was after all a rare thing to be put against odds that were not overwhelming, the enemy was always stronger, always better prepared. Now though he was in such a situation, he the one with the upper hand, it certainly wasn’t unique but it didn’t make him feel partially happier or more confident either, he treated each situation like any other. As if the enemy would come out with something stronger at a moment’s notice.

Not that Mi’keh was an enemy yet, just some Malician who seemed to take delight in torturing people.

“Spoken like a true servant, I wonder if you even know what she’s alleged to have done wrong?”

The human asked with a dry laugh, glancing at the woman again, his eyebrows raised, hands unmoving, folded over his belt. Certainly it was unlikely in Duncan’s opinion that the girl had done anything to warrant such treatment, then again he could be wrong, as it was he was more interested in whether the mage even knew, not in what Gryffin had or had not done.

Apart from the fact that the man was obviously in his way, Mi'keh started to dislike him. Not that it really mattered, he feared the man, and the man was an obstacle. The half-Elf's personal feelings towards him were of no importance whatsoever in the current situation. At least Mi'keh had to give him credit for talking, talking was something Mi'keh was good at, squirming and begging, bluffing and threatening his way into and out of things had been one of the essential skills that had kept him alive in Malice. Making sure his voice was no longer giving away his emotions Mi'keh replied with a summary. "Espionage for the Enamorian forces. Resisting arrest. Resisting interrogation. Brutal murder of a Malician guard performing his duty. Several attempts of escape." He quickly said. Hoping to use this list to overwhelm Duncan. It probably would not work but any opponent, in any battle either verbal or physical, that knew he was wrong and that the other person was right was at a disadvantage to begin with. "Do you know enough to let this 'servant' take his prisoner back to where she belongs?"

“You mean to tell me she killed a trained, experienced guard? please.”

Duncan commented with a clearly unconvinced look to Gryffin, no, he knew well enough how looks could be deceiving but this was just stupid, the woman was no more threatening than a mouse, he knew mice could bite hard and actually could probably imagine her killing a guard but none the less Mi’keh needed to understand that if handled properly a prisoner need never even be in a position to hurt a guard.

“If your telling the truth then I must instead question your handling of her rather than her crimes, say she is a spy.” Duncan said, holding up his left hand in a conciliatory manner. “Say she is. Then why didn’t you elect to have one of the Malice Mystic’s look over her?”

Myself for one, although admittedly I’m not actually a well known one. Duncan had to add silently. Pausing for a moment to direct that slightly disgusted look towards Mi’keh again.

“Do you enjoy torturing people then? Get kicks out of making people do your bidding? No wonder she’s tried to escape, if you’d treated her with a little more respect than a common animal then you’d not have these problems, put her in chains, leave her in a cell and take things slowly, as far as I can see it your technique was too hasty.”

Duncan was a great advocate of either a) just extracting the information or b) doing the job right, as far as he could see Mi’keh had done neither. Frankly it annoyed the Mystic, in this situation he had to admit that an Enamorian spy needed to be punished and perhaps interrogated. That was the way of it; then again she’d obviously confessed or at least been discovered in incriminating circumstances to warrant being labelled a spy in the first place.

Unfortunately for Mi’keh though Duncan didn’t care about the guard, he probably deserved what was coming to him if he was stupid enough to let the woman near him – at least by the standards of Malician guard morals and ethics the Mystic had seen. Mi’keh being a prime example in the face he put forward publicly, if not his actual thoughts on the matter.

Duncan could not know how right he was, and how much Mi'keh agreed with him on account of the guard. If Gryffin had not killed the man then Mi'keh would have, but he kept that to himself for now. As apparently this man seemed willing to talk Mi'keh took the risk of moving his gloved hand away from his belt and the hilt of his sword and put it against the wall beside him, no so much for support as more to get a point across that he was convinced he could win this without violence. With a blank look at Duncan Mi'keh continued, knowing that he was right.

"Yes, she killed a guard. An armed guard at that. She bit through his throat." He fell silent for a bit to let the image nestle in Duncan's mind. "Ofcourse..." He continued casually "...the guard should not have been in that position, but she should have realised that killing him was not a smart thing to do. And as to my ways of interrogation, the Mystics here in Malice have... other things to keep themselves busy. And as I report directly to Magnus alone they have found me to be just as efficient, as to your other question, no, I do not enjoy my duty. But before this here woman I have not failed a questioning yet. However her case is special, I have chosen for her to be my responsibility. She was given the option to either stay in her cell or do my bidding." During his entire speech Mi'keh had completely forgotten about Gryffin, although she was still obviously there. He was completely focussed on winning this argument with this man whom he found thoroughly annoying. His disliking of the man was, irrational as it might be, only enhanced by the images his questions called forth. The soldiers and officers, the spies and unsuspecting townsfolk. Many people had been brought in by the patrols in these dangerous times, and all needed questioning. Every time a suspect was thought to be hiding something, Mi'keh was called. No, he really disliked this man that was questioning him with his nose in the air.

By this time Mi'keh's sense of duty also reared it's ugly head. It was all good and nice that this man was questioning him in, what Mi'keh had come to consider, his own home, but by now he'd like to see some proof that this man had a valid reason to be here. "Now, if you don't mind me asking, exactly who might you be to be questioning me in Malice? You obviously have some skill but you are not one of the Three."

She had watched the argument between the two of them, with a small smile on her face. She eventually got bored and stood straight, turning to look outside again. She leaned over, the sun making her black hair shine with a blue haze and accenting the bronze hue of her otherwise white skin. She sighed and continued watching the almost dead goings on of the outside world.

He talked about her if she were no more than a disobedient pet. She grew angry and the suppressed growl slow rose the more the Half-Elf rambled. She eventually turned and fixed him with a cold glare,
Look, I’ve had enough of this, you have no right to treat me like a common rat. I happen to be human, weather you think that or not. I am not some toy you can keep locked up inside.” She shouted a long curse at him and stormed away, sitting in the shadow of the stairs, which led up to the tower. She glowered at the stone work, trying her best not to break it with her fist.
