Papyrus From the Arcane Academy of Arconis: to Nashkel

Riders from the northeast approached the massive Enamorian army spread out like some busy ant hive around the black spires of Malice. They were small in number, insignificant in comparison to the thousands of men toward whom they were headed. Yet if anyone were to doubt their usefulness among the forces led by the Thane Nashkel Angor, they would be gravely mistaken. For these were not just any simple riders cantering briskly across the plains; no, every one of the six riders had spent years upon years enclosed within the walls of the Arconian Arcane Academy with minds exposed in the spacious breadth of the Astral Plane.

Before the rest rode Nathan Crotheny, Master of Sorcery and former Headmaster of the Academy. His eyes flashing as he saw the dark city and its attackers laid out before him, Crotheny scowled in rememberance of the countless hours he had spent behind closed doors with his peers at the Academy, fulminating against their doubts and their prejudice. That the Academy did not have clear leadership since he himself had resigned a short while previously did nothing to help matters: there were some in that council chamber who resented Crotheny's resignation - and those who resented his positive opinion of Nashkel's letter simply because it was his... others were merely suspicious of the Daltinian for his actions in their city. Yet in the counterbalance lay the Arconians' hatred of Malice and of the orcish hordes it bred. Perhaps if there had been a Headmaster there to call the shots things would have ended up differently - even quickly, Crotheny in his exasperation would have settled for quickly.

In the end, however, the former Headmaster had simply walked out of that tension-filled council chamber, in disgust leaving those who wished to discuss the matter further to themselves and set out to Malice with the few who stood staunchly by him through the uncertainty: that is, the Master Druidess Leah and a handfull of their longtime students, three journeymen sorcerers and one journeyman druid.
