Badb, thanks for reading this and not hating it! I expect both you and Stargrace to have fun with this! If the both of you want to take the Cao triad and run with it- go for it! The only NPC's I'm really going to nail down are the ones listed above. It's totally open.

As for the loansharking, I was envisioning that the Kitsune themselves would be the underworld bank and loan sharks. Perhaps they don't do it directly and through a triad like the Cao's? I was looking to give the Kitsune's a huge advantage and thinking that money would do the trick.

With the loansharking - that makes perfect sense. Have the Kitsune do it. Do you want to see a little group of specialists/small family in the Kitsune for it? I had a few ideas for it.

As it was, family of six. Husband, wife, four children (two sons/two daughters?). Somewhat high profile because of the nature of the business. People assumed it was the husband who ran things. As such, he was assassinated by someone looking to take over the loansharking for the Kitsunes. That kind of backfired, because the wife (who was born of the Kitsune Clan) was the main brains in behind it. So now she runs the loansharking with her older children acting as backup.

They either borrow or have muscle of their own for enforcing those who default on payments.

Comment/critique/suggestions?

I think that sounds good. Maybe they have a few of their own bruisers with the Axes as backup?

That's what I was thinking. They'd have their own hit squad of bruisers with Axes as backup if needed or a point proven. Possibly a starting-ground for new Axes, too, starting with the bruisers. No idea there, just a thought off of the top of my head.

Perfect we just need a name. Suggestions- Tanaka, Ishikawa, Tam? And a name for the Mama?

Also, maybe a goon squad of 4 to keep people in line?

Leaning towards Tanaka. Hioni being the matriarch. Can flesh out the kids, since they're somewhat older and help with the business.

That said, Tanaka family essentially done on paper. Need to finish it (names, basically), add a few more things, and type it. Then it's done. School is killing me. Must kill it first. D<

Ok so I know its taken me a while to pop my head in. But alas...I'm here now
and I love the Cao Triad! cant wait to read more - appearance, dress etc (would love to see leather outfits *winks*)

Also whilst its in my mind i was thinking of getting onto setting up the weekly slave auction soonish, is that fine? I had planned to before I first checked out the other underworld dicussion and I see that you have added it to my new fav npcs. So thought I would ask if its ok to go on ahead with that as I have found the first slave... *smiles sweetly*

So how long do you reckon until the underworld will offically be up and running in Z'S?

The Tanaka Family

History
Hioni, of the Kitsune clan, married Yasao Tanaka about twenty-five eras ago as his first wife. He was an astute businessman, and handled the loan sharking business for the boss and higher-ups of the Kitsune clan. He was assassinated by a rival who sought not only his place on the hierarchical structure and his lucrative business, but his wife as well. His death came in his tenth era of marriage to Hioni, leaving her with five young children.

The rival’s plan failed, however, when Hioni foiled it. She ‘took over’ the loan sharking business, and it continued as if Yasao had still been there. The man had made a very big mistake.

Yasao wasn’t the one running the loan sharking racket.

Hioni was. Her husband had merely been a puppet, a figurehead. She was of the Kitsune clan, after all. She grew up with business, and had been heavily involved in loan sharking since she was younger.

Before Yasao’s death, he fathered four children with his wife, two sons and two daughters, all within five eras. Hioni also adopted her sister’s daughter, who was the same age as her oldest girl. She set her niece up with her own little shop, and her other four children “help” their mother in the family business, attracting and transacting business deals of their own.

Business
Hioni is a loan shark. She is always willing to give out a loan…but it’ll cost you, sometimes dearly. She has access to great amounts of crowns, but demands a high rate of return for it. Similarly, she might also be willing to hear business plans, and invest in start-up businesses, but requires a high rate of return. Few people are willing to even dare ask her about business investment, and prefer to get a loan.

Most of her profits go right back into the Kitsune family’s coffers, but a substantial trickle goes into her own pocket. She has no problem selling people as slaves for debts to be repaid, and has been noted to go after the family, friends, and anyone else a defaulter knows to make their life miserable until money is paid.

Hioni has an enforcement squad of four members. They are all sons of the Kitsune clan, and tend to rotate out. They consider it a springboard into stronger positions, but provides for an excellent source of income and experience. They are usually highly skilled in zinn’ka and in weapons. They do, however, like to send messages and make examples out of anyone who is late with their payments. If necessary, they get backup from the Axes. They serve as bodyguards, debt collectors, and thugs. They have a fairly high degree of autonomy.

They’re good people… as long as you don’t owe them money.

Hioni Tanaka, 45 eras.
She is the matriarch of the Tanaka family, and rules it with an iron fist inside of a silk glove. She is called the ice queen for her frosty demeanor (she very rarely ever gets excited about anything) and also because of a rumor from before she was married – she impaled a man who offended her and her honor with an icicle. She dresses very properly – kimono, jewelry, and so on. She has a kitsune tattoo on her back. She has long black hair and icy, pale grey eyes. There are rumors of her being blind, but no truth to them. She is a businesswoman above all and has an accountant’s mind for money. She is enterprising, ruthlessly cutthroat, and does not tolerate any interference with her business or family whatsoever.
