Barracks of the New Coldmoon Legion (Millitary)

The barracks of the prestigious New Coldmoon Legion, situated not far from the Legion's recruitment center, the Martial Academy, served as the home of the majority of the Legion's members, most notably those of low rank and prestige. They were a series of low, wooden buildings, all nondescript save for the New Coldmoon flags flying high above their entrances. Each had a sign beside its door that explained who was designated to live within; the barracks' denizens ranged from new recruits to high-ranking officers.

Nestled in between these buildings was a larger, more distinguishable building decorated with the colors of the Legion; as any soldier would well know, it served as the mess hall and recreation area, as well as the favored meeting spot of New Coldmoon Legion soldiers. This popular locale contained both the expansive cafeteria of the barracks compound and several game rooms and meeting areas of varying sizes. Fortunately, the waiters and waitresses of the mess hall had no qualms against bringing food to all parts of the building, so a soldier could always expect to eat, drink, and relax while within its walls. It was certainly the location where most soldiers generally wished to spend what little free time they had.

Upon entering any of the barracks, one would be greeted by a soldier of the same rank as that designated on the building's sign, who served as the overseer of that particular building. If one had questions, these overseers would be able to answer them.

Noon on Kuras, Brightening 9 of Cycle 5
Day 49 in the Month of Ioannes, Era I of Year X Post Fractum (PF).

Medea made her way to the Barracks slowly, the events from the Thanal Manor still running through her head. Suddenly she had a lot to think about and probably not a lot of time to ponder it. patience had always been one of her elvan virtues and having to rush her thinking already vexed her. However, meeting up with some old friends in the Barracks' Common Rooms would ease her tension somewhat and also shed a little light on some of the mysteries Cassidy had mentioned.

Entering the Officers' Mess she made her way to the bar area looking for her fellow elvan Captain from the city gate. If she could not find him just yet then she endeavoured to search for another memorable face. It had been a long time since she had last walked the streets of New Coldmoon and she knew many faces would have also departed but she was convinced some would still remain to share an ale with and a story or two.

Medea made her way into the barracks of the Keryn Regiment. She recognised many faces but many were also new. New recruits had been called in, especially for the Wildernessmen. Medea sought out the elven captain from the city gates within the Officers' Mess. There were few here since most were out training the new recruits. The elven captain, however, was sitting chatting to another elven officer. Medea made her way over to them and when the captain saw her, he stood up and presented the other elven officer. "Serale, Medea. This is Fillynon. Fillynon, this is Medea Lightfoot." Before Medea could react, Fillynon was up and greeted Medea with a handshake and said, "Serale. I have heard a few tales about you. Have you ever heard about T.O.P.? The Order of Purity?"

Medea now found herself alone in the Officers' Mess with two elven officers standing up talking to her. They didn't seem to mind standing, yet there were benches made for sitting down.

OOC: Does the elven officer have a name or is it a new NPC you met at the gates?

Eventually spotting the Captain from the gates in the sparsely populated Mess Medea approached him with a smile. Instantly introduced to his companion Medea accepted his proffered hand with a warrior's grip.

" Serale Fillynon, " she greeted him. She had much to ask her companions but etiquette dictated that she bide her time for she was soon to need the support of the entire military and that support would stem from the building she now occupied. Indicating that the two should once more take their seats Medea took one adjacent to their own with which to continue the conversation.

" I cannot say that I have heard of it but then I have been serving abroad for some time now. Is it some faction within the city or Enamoria Province, perhaps Malice?"

She would follow the pair's line of conversation but her aim was to move the topic toward Malice, an area that she was in dire need of intelligence.

Fillynon grinned and then spoke again, "No no no. T.O.P. is an order within the Enamoria Province but not in Malice but here in New Coldmoon. It's the secret elite part of the Keryn Regiment. The reason that it's secret is that it's an illegal army. It does not serve Alleria but only New Coldmoon. It's financed privately and only known to a few. If you would like, you could go through the tests and if you're accepted, I'm sure you'll face people of your own level, meaning; you'll work with others like yourself. What do you say?"

OOC: I'm preparing an adventure. I was wondering if you wanted in? If you do, it's a continuation of Gorg if you remember him. Just seek him out in the tavern and I might add in some other players too.

Medea’s eyebrows furrowed as she absorbed the extent of the Order; a secretive faction within the city’s military itself but operating on a Province-wide scale. The mere fact that the illegal Order existed was concern enough, however, she was intrigued as to who commanded and financed the Order. The fact also that she had been within the city walls for less than a brightening and had already been offered possible membership made her think that the unit might not be quite as secretive as Fillynon made out.

However, she displayed a facile smile to the two Captains intent on discovering more. The pair obviously had no knowledge of the reasons for Medea’s return to New Coldmoon, nor the outcome of her meeting with the Thane but moments before arriving at the Barracks. But intrigued as to who ‘others like herself’ were, and intent on discovering more, Medea went along with the conversation.

The idea sounds intriguing, please tell me more. Who finances such an illegal gathering, who commands it, and for what purpose is the Order utilised?

"No no no. That is not how we operate. Everything we tell you has never been told to you, understand? We're secretive, which means that only about a hundred people within the Allerian empire knows of our existance. You may tell anybody you like about The Order of Purity but you have no proof and never will. You won't even get any names except for my own, which cannot be used for complicated reasons. If I were you, I would whisper a word about the order. On the contrary, if you would like to join us, you have to pass through some tests. If you're willing, then meet up with me tomorrow in the courtyard of the Keryn Citadel"

With these last words, the elf Fillynon got up and left in a powerful and intimidating way. The captain looked at Medea and said, "He offered me the same position a while back. They only chose the best, or the most capable along with the youngest. I don't really understand since I declined. Nobody would ever believe me and I have no proof of their existance. However, you didn't return to New Coldmoon to be recruited into an order you didn't even know existed. Why did the great Medea Lightfoot return to New Coldmoon?"

OOC: You should PM Lunerith about your membership with TOP if you're interested since I'm no longer his AGM. I'll still mod the adventure I've started with you though.

Medea gazed unblinkingly into the eyes of her fellow elf, Fillynon, as he attempted to cover his tracks some what with respect to the Order. Despite what he stated Medea came to the conclusion that the existence of the Order was probably more widespread than he cared to admit although any actual factual information about it was probably actually known to very few.

However, she was not about to burn her bridges before she had even begun to investigate what was truly occurring within her former home city. Instead she decided to leave as many doors open as she could. She already had filled the following morning with attendance at the meeting of the Revolutionary Council with the Lady Protector and Thane. If she were to make it back to the Citadel courtyard then it would likely be much later.

" I will bare it in mind Fillynon, and sleep upon it before making a final decision. " she responded before the elvan Captain marched off leaving Medea and the gate Captain alone.

Medea was unsure what to tell her other fellow elf. She didn't know who to trust just yet within the city. It had been a long time since she served with the Imperial Guard within the walls. Times had changed, so would loyalties, and even the name of the military had been altered after the Revolution.

" Indeed, you are quite right and observant. I returned to the city at the behest of another of your city's occupants. She offered me a position within her organisation which I am likely to accept tomorrow morning. However, she warned me of disturbing occurences at a place called Malice. No such city existed when last I left. Where is this place and to what extent have the military become involved in its occupation? "

Medea left her answers vague whilst attempting to garner as much information as possible. Little did the Captain know that she would be frequenting the Citadel a lot more in the future and would, by the same time the following brightening, in fact be his Commander.

"Malice!!!" the captain spoke with a tone of fear and sorrow, yet with some kind of pride and happiness, "You have been gone too long my lady. Have you not heard of the Siege of Malice? Some patterns ago, New Coldmoon entered a war with Malice and most of our army was sent to besiege the city. Few of us remained and many strange and evil thing happened within our walls. I believe the siege is over or soon will be. I haven't heard any news for a few months now but I'm hoping for the best. If the siege is over, our entire army should be returning shortly. I don't know, we'll see. I was fortunate enough not to be sent but my brother was killed about a pattern ago. I'm actually not sure where Malice is. My geographical sense is nil without a map."

There was a short moment of silence before the captain resumed his speech, "Let us talk about something else. What position and what organisation are you applying for tomorrow. I hope it's not confidential since it sounds so interesting and I'm actually curious to what the great Medea Lightfoot is going to be doing within the walls of New Coldmoon."

" Indeed, I have heard naught of such a siege beyond what you mentioned at the city gate previously this brightening. I have been gone too long it seems. The siege appears huge indeed to warrant such a commitment not only from New Coldmoon's elite but from the remainder of the Provincial armies too. I do not wish to labour the point if you do not wish to talk of such matters but what could warrant the necessity to muster such a sized force to march upon it? You have the advantage on me for I know nothing of such a place nor its denizens and whilst I have a map of the Province I still would not be able to locate it. As to my new position, if you would but be patient until the morrow all will be revealed. The post has yet to be confirmed but I anticipate it being so early tomorrow morning. "

Medea waited to see if the Captain would elaborate any further on Malice or if he had said enough. She would not be pressed any further on her new position and was content to depart if necessary to end the conversation.

"I personally don't know that much of the siege of Malice. I have been assigned to protect the city from other forces. I can inform myself so that I may tell you more. Right now, I can only tell you that there were some kind of offence between the people of New Coldmoon and the people of Malice. I'm not sure what triggered the war itself but here we are. Anything else you want to know?"

Medea shook her head, a little saddened by her fellow officer's lack of knowledge of proceedings at this mysterious place named Malice. Despite a good proportion of the city's forces being deployed there little feedback appeared to have returned to the city on their progress. Whilst the captain appeared optimistic Medea conversely felt a little trepidation. For her it appeared 'no news was bad news'. The Thane had not been alone in her lack of intelligence on the city's fight against this new foe

Nodding at the man's suggestion Medea agreed,
" I would be grateful for any such news. Perhaps we could meet here the same time tomorrow and, if the Gods smile down upon us both, we can share our good news together. "

Medea stood once more to depart, offering her hand in farewell. If the captain had no other comment to make she would make her exit for she had other intelligence to gather that brightening too.

Zoran Khanirh is an upstanding Citizen
1st Dianara of Immanis, Spring of Era XI In the Age of the Darkening

The Nimâlni stood silent and stiff as a stone statue in front of the recruit barracks. With a certain abject horror he realized that this fragile, low laying, rickety building of wood and nails would be his home for an undefined period of time. After that it would be yet another building just like it for yet another undefined period of time. Although the thought of such an utter lack of architectural beauty was dismal to him it was also nothing more than what he had expected. With a resigned sigh he simply accepted the circumstances of military life.

Almost hesitantly Zoran stepped forward past the barracks ingress. His mind was tentative, silently warning him that this new life would not measure up to his adolescent dreams of fancy, unfortunately his heart would head no such warning, it created dreams of glory and fame to be won, it reminded him of the honour and self-worth which he was yearned to regain. The slightest hint of a tight frown crossed his face, the sign of his ill-conceived newfound sense of determination stemming from his impractical embarrassment.

Upon fully enclosing himself within the bounds of the barracks walls a pristine looking Omnicat stepped out of the shadows with by far the most vile looking of grins on his face that Zoran had ever seen. Purring the beige coloured Katta said, "And who might you be? A new rrrecrrruit to serrrve me?" Four more recruits stepped out of the shadows and surrounded Zoran.

As unsure and curious as he was about what was happening around him the new recruit simply did what the lieutenant had told him to do. Stepping forward on the creaking barracks floor he held the note out to the Omnicat, "I suppose you're the overseer of this barracks. The lieutenant told me to give this to you. My name is Zoran Khanirh, what's yours?" A friendly smile graced his face.

What the Half-Elf could only interpret as a look of disgust spread across the Omnicats face. The Katta struck so quickly that the Nimâlni barely even saw the movement. With claws extended he struck the right side of Zorans face leaving red, bleeding cuts running down his cheek. In utter indignation his assaulter shrieked "You will not addrrress me as though we arrre equals! You are inferrriorrr filth!" Though he was a new recruit Zoran was not about to allow himself to be shamed in such a way by a soldier of equal rank.

The note dropped from his hand and the duffle bag slipped off his shoulder. His eyes burned with the fires of fury and his upper lip curled back as he growled in anger. Zoran stepped forward with his left foot and leaned backwards as he drew his right arm back behind his head. He shifted his entire body forward as he swung his fist toward the arrogant Omnicats chin, adding power to his violent retaliation. Upon contact he felt the Kattas jaw jerk away from his fist before he went flying through the air.

Kawlel landed directly on his back completely stunned and shocked. Had a new recruit actually just hit him? Who was this ugly Elf to challenge an Omnicat? This spawn of Aeternia would pay for his disrespect. He propped himself up on his right elbow as he massaged his jaw with his left paw. "You'll pay for that rrrunt," casting his eyes towards one of the four recruits surrounding the one called Zoran he growled, "Beat the grrreen out of him boys." All at once his four lackeys jumped for the man.

Before he could react he was jumped by the four recruits who had encircled him earlier. What a fool he was, he should have accounted for them before. Zoran turned to stop the fist of one of the recruits, capturing it in his hand. Unfortunately he had only exposed his kidneys to the fist of another one of his assailers, causing him to cry out. Mere moments later this was quickly followed by a fist to his stomach, forcing him to double over and gasp for air. The man in front of him slammed his knee into Zorans face, knocking him to the ground.

Blood flowed freely out of his nose and tears filled his eyes blurring his vision. He felt a solid boot to the back of his skull, followed by two to his back and one more to his stomach. All he could do was curl up and endure the punishment. Though these brutes might think they had defeated they were more wrong than they could ever imagine. Hatred simply brewed in his heart and a stronger determination than before grew inside. He did not know when the gang beating stopped but when it did he heard the Katta speak.

"I hope you enjoyed yourrr punishment rrrunt. Rrrememberrr the name Kawlel, it will haunt you forrr the rest of yourrr life." He felt entirely victorious. He had taught the Elf not to challenge him. Simply for pleasure he would have his goons beat this boy for the rest of his military career. Kawlel fully expected that they would eventually chase Zoran out of not only the Keryn Regiment but also out of New Coldmoon itself, hopefully out of Enamoria.

Spitting blood out of his mouth and wiping his arm across his nose to clear away the blood Zoran pushed himself up so that he was sitting with his legs sprawled out in front of him. In a fiery voice he shouted in response, "You would do best to remember the name Zoran Khanirh fur ball. I'll--" He couldn't even get out what he wanted to say before one of Kawlels lackeys turned and kicked him so hard in the face as to flip him onto his belly. The beaten and downtrodden young Half-Elf coughed up blood on the dusty wooden floors of his new home. It wasn't entirely the welcome he had expected.

He had a new objective, it seemed that these negative reinforcements were all to eager to fuel Zorans ambitions and determination. When he became the commander of the Keryn Regiment Kawlel and his goons would regret the day they were born.
