Third Cycle of Immanis
in the Season of Winter
Aydyn sat down near the entrance to the waterway and inspected her daughter one last time. It was frigid out, so cold that her nose was red and her ears numb with the sting of the wind. Having never been to Jaedaxia before, she had only rumors of what to expect with the weather. Experiencing it, Aydyn wasn't quite sure she could have ever properly prepared for this level of cold. But she and Noah were properly bundled in woolen mittens and hats, scarves tucked around their necks to ward off the cold.
Noah, however, squirmed and pulled and
threw. The scarf was uncomfortable and the mittens confined little fingers that would have rather grabbed at things in reach, only to find themselves encumbered by the fabric that bound them. It was a bit taxing to hold on to the little girl, to make sure that the hat was still on and not skewed a top her tousled head of brown hair, that the mittens hadn't been lost and that scarf hadn't accidentally been tugged too tight in a temper tantrum.
Tired and cold, Noah had fussed and cried a majority of the way to the waterways and Aydyn was anxiously looking forward to being packed onto what she would assume was a boat that would take them to a warm home to get settled into. She kissed her daughter's cheek and sighed as she asked, again, about her favorite little kitten. Speck. 'Speh', as she called him. Aydyn had felt bad about leaving her small menagerie of cats back at the inn where she'd been staying, but she had forgotten to ask at the office if a wagonload of cats pulled by a horse would fit on the ride. She figured it would be no trouble at all coming back for them once she found out if she could keep them at the academy or not and so she'd left them for now, paying for another two darkenings at the inn.
"It's okay, lovey. We'll be nice and warm soon, I promise," she murmured against her daughter's cheek, holding Noah against her chest, an arm tucked under the girl's bottom, as they advanced through the entranceway to look for the one who was supposed to be her guide to the academy.
