[Location] Quadratique du Ville (Town Square + Bulletin Board)
Directly West of L'Cloison lay the Quartier du Résidence, or the Residential Quarter, the center of which was a wide, open villa paved in stone. The heart of Le Quadratique du Ville was a grand mahogany gazebo, its sheer size and splendor enough to draw the standard daily crowd of citizen, troubadour and entertainer alike. This was the place where all proclamations were made, be they news, gossip, or announcements on the part of the Thane, and it was also where poets, singers and dancers could ply their trade for a few spare coins. Facing due south, in front of the gazebo, stood an enormous granite representation of the High Queen Jaedah, for which the Gift of the Empire had been named. Despite her short reign and nearly forgotten presence at the Isle of the Crown, she would be forever remembered here, as she had been integral to the salvation of the City from thieves and brigands. Children gathered at her feet to listen to stories told by elderly sages, and parents listened on approvingly, as these venerable instructors taught nothing if not history, philosophy, and literature, which were prized above all else in Jaedaxia.
Winter's fierce hold on the City seemed lessened here, as Le Quadratique was protected on all sides by the Residential Quarter, and while citizens still wore the customary fur-lined cloaks and heavy rawhide boots, they seemed less intent on staying warm than they would in any other part of the city. The occasional stray snowflake landed in someone's hair, or perhaps on their eyelashes, bringing the occasional burst of laughter from the children as the victim was caught unawares. Those who were not listening to the aged teachers were embroiled in what was proving to be yet another war of snowballs, building walls of snow to hide behind as they threw the tightly packed handfuls of ice at their comrades. The entire place was indeed very noisy, with music wafting through the air, recitations by poets and writers, the cheerful laughter of children, and various other babble that added to the din. This grand city did indeed prove that life could flourish even in the harshest of circumstances, and it seemed unlikely that the people here would have it any other way. Their cheerful demeanor reflected a quality of life surprising to the average passerby, and their quiet endurance appeared unbreakable. Even after centuries of internal war, they had not succumbed to melancholy or heavyheartedness...
Inside the ornate mahogany structure, the bulletin board itself had been carved out of the north wall. The solid piece of wood boasted borders inlaid with gold bas relief runes in an ancient dialect that could no longer be deciphered. All manner of notices were posted on this exquisite message board: legal notices, offers of job listings, and upcoming events; even advertisements of items for sale or services for hire could be found here...
