As non of the students really said anything after awhile the theacher just went on with his lesson.
"Before you even touch a lock, you need to know your tools. Learn to love these. Know them by touch so you can find the ones you are looking for without seeing them." He motioned for the students to open there pack and look at his tools as he continued. "The picks I'm going to explain now can be found in your basic pack. When you get more training, perhaps your new teacher will give you more."
One by one he took picks from his pack and showed them to the students so they could find the same one in theres. And one by one he explained them, "Torque or Tension Wrench- This is an "L" shaped piece of spring steel. It is used to put tension on the lock while the pins are moved so that they don't spring back into place. They come in many shapes and sizes for different locks.
Feeler (Hook) Pick- The most important pick for projection. This is a pick that is "J" shaped at the end so that individual pins in a lock can be felt. Because of the shape, you cannot scrub with this pick, because it will catch on the pins.
Half-Feeler (Half-Hook) Pick- This is used just like the hook pick, except it is smaller, for tiny locks. The shape is more like a lowercase "J" ... where the tail of the J isn't quite as long or as sharp.
Basic Rake Picks- At the end of these picks, they have an E or W shape, some of which have very soft curves and others that are jagged. These are very useful in scrubbing.
Warded Picks- Warded picks look very similar to keys, and serve the same purpose. This is the only kind of pick that doesn’t require a tension wrench. These are commonly used on padlocks. Because most padlocks are double sided (meaning they have pins on both sides) you have to use a warded pick to open them."
He motioned to the Them that was the extent of there own kit. "You might as well get a sense of the other tools that await you." He continued to pull picks out of his pack and explain them. "Diamond Pick- This is a common pick that is diamond shaped at the end. It's made of the same spring steel as the Wrench. This tool is used for projection, but can also be used for scrubbing in some bigger locks.
Half-Diamond Pick- This pick has a triangle shape on one side of the pick. The half diamond is used for raking on smaller locks. It's small size allows it to fit into many locks easily.
Ball-Rake Pick- This pick works in the same way as the diamond pick, except it is very hard to use projection with this type of pick.
Double Ball-Rake Pick- Very similar to the ball pick, except it has two balls, one at the end that is smaller, and one behind it that is slightly bigger.
Half Ball-Rake Pick- This pick is similar to the half-diamond, and works in the same way, but it too is difficult to use in projection.
Advanced Rake- This is an invaluable tool for quick picks. It has a dull jagged edge on 1/3 of the pick. It is used in scrubbing and can pick most common locks very fast."
After that extensive look into his own kit. He still had some things to explain. "Keeping with the theme that this is a locksmithing class, I need to show you just a few more tools." On the table were several things that he picked up, each in turn, and explained, "Blanks - Keys that have no coding in them. These blank keys are only made for common locks. The blank keys are made into real keys using the grinding wheel.
Grinding Wheel- A wheel made of granite that spins quickly to cut down the blanks into real keys. These can also be used to make home-made picks from spring steel.
Broken Key Extractor- This tool is a thin wire with a curved tip with a spring steel handle. It is used to remove pieces of broken keys or picks in a lock. This can also be used to disarm many traps."
Most people might have found that extensive lecture boring, but not him. He loved the subject like he loved his wife almost, it was more then a simple job for him. "Any questions?"
