HyRune Raven is an upstanding Citizen
Apprentice Mysticism (HyRune Raven, Maddyn/Aderyn as mod)

HyRune stepped quickly and carefully into the classroom he'd been assigned a few minutes early. His mind was still preoccupied with that dispute between the sailors and the fishermen, but he felt ready to begin the day's training. If truth be told, he was even fairly excited, looking forward to the power that would soon be at his fingertips.

He did not know who the teacher would be--the clerk had informed him that one would be assigned, but he did not know yet if it would be his old Master Domenique or someone new. He wondered, idly, if the promotion process would be anything like the unbinding. This brought a sober frown to the man's face, and he resolved himself to keep his thoughts away from that "other" life. No need for those memories to come back and haunt him again.

HyRune though was to find that those few minutes early he arrived meant that the teacher was far from being in the classroom just yet. The classroom itself was plain and really serving for functionality rather than anything else and if there was a mop and bucket in the corner than it might have been possible that HyRune had just so happened to have walked into a janitors closet and living area doubled as one. Light flooded into the room for illumination, and set above head height various iron candle brackets with an unlit candle set within.

In the middle of the room was a simple wooden table, once polished but now heavily scarred with marks ranging from a knife through to inks and oneone who'd carved into the edge 'CA 4 ML' and then made a hasty attempt to sribble it out again. Four chairs, one around each of the table placements and on the table was a pile of books hastily stacked into a tower that threatened to fall at any second. In the far right hand corner was a heap of blankets of various shades along with some pillows.

The other far side of the room was different though, a box of candles, another of chalk and some flint and tinder was carefully stacked up. The ground itself had a circle about 6 inches deep and was about 3 feet in diametre. The air about this reeked of incence in spite of its proximity to the window and periodically it looked as if the air within was shifting, smokey though should HyRune check it, nothing seemed within the circle whether arcanic of origin or normal to the Plane of Telath.

It was some time, a good fifteen minutes later than what HyRune had been sceduled for when a little girl suddenly burst into the room and doubled over, panting for breath. About twelve patterns old in appearance and Elvish (so, probably really closer to 55 patterns, give or take), she had pale skin, long dark brown hair kept in a braid to her waist (with a few leaves accidently stuck within), and a tiny lily flower stuck behind the point of her ear. Blue eyes, and when she glanced up a broad grin. Her clothing was simple, a white smock belted at the waist and she hadn't bothered with shoes or sandles of any kind.

"Hullo there?" she queried, grinning happily as she made her way to the table and rather than claiming a chair sat down cross legged upon the top of the table right near the stack of books - teetering sideways when she drew closer before smoothing down her rather plain dress.

ooc: Sorry for the delay...final exams...

ic: HyRune smiled, though a part of him chafed at being made to wait--since his ascension to thanedom, it had been difficult to find time for anything anymore.

"Serale," he said, a little uncertainly. "Er...are you another student?" Someone as young as the girl sounded could hardly be the teacher, he thought, but he hadn't been told that anyone else would be in the class with him.

"Vedui'!, go on. Try it, sounds much much better than that icky Allerian 'Serale'. Much friendlier as well and how many words do you know that start with a veeee sound anyway? Violin... voila? Not many, mhmm." Dalla exclaimed, settled and grinning away happily as she watched Hyrune with a strange look. That he was blind hadn't really occured to the little girl and rather than giving him the benefit of aide of any kind she was more inclined to steal a chair he'd been intending on sitting upon... and placing a bean bag down below so Hyrune wouldn't hurt himself for her jest.

It was a good sign Willow wasn't here, then things would've been bad for the Thane.

"And nope, I'd be Miss Dalla, well... the people here prefer Mistress Dallandra ap'Tindomerel... but Dalla's fine by me; Miss if you have to at least feign being stuffy and formal.' she continued, humming softly. "Sooo... you arn't one of those freaky people who have really good hearing and tell where everything is because people have really loud heartbeats or something right? There's a seat right efore you by the way... got any questions or shall we get right into things Mister?...umm... though, I do have to ask this, why're you wearing that band around your eyes? Looks a little... lacey... umm...no, probably best not to answer where in Aeternia you got that from. I am only a child... right?"

OOC:
No worries. RL happens. *offers a shotgun, recommends shooting your way out *

Cheers, Matt

ooc: LOL. My bandage is NOT lacey! It's just bad artwork...

ic: HyRune was surprised that this little girl could be the instructor. "You're...ah, excellent, then." His recovery from his obvious shock was admirable. "I have been told that my hearing is quite good, yes," he told her with a smile, "And I wear the bandage because not many people enjoy the sight of a pair of holes where eyes should be, if you'll pardon my being so illustrative. My name is HyRune Raven," the blind man extended his hand to shake before taking the offered seat, "And yes, I am ready to begin whenever you are, Miss Dalla."

Humming softly to herself as she pondered over that particular dilema, Dallandra quite simply didn't see the point in wearing a bandage. If smelly little things like Dwarves could walk about without wearing a bucket over their heads and Orcs were allowed outside then some empty eye sockets were rather pleasant by comparison. Nevermind Katta, Dorin and Ratta, all those funny looking things should've been sold in an elaborate pet store and taught little tricks rather than being considered actually sentient.

Reaching over to shake Hyrune's hand with her own, the odd - if not off-key song that the little girl hummed ended abruptly as she began with the more important parts of the lesson. "Alright then close you... umm... nevermind. How about trying to ponder something silly and philosophical like what sunlight tastes like or if it was the chicken or the egg that came first..." Dalla started with a slight frown marking her brow and a huff of distaste at a conventional practice in training proving completely useless to a blind person.

"Now, either way... try and relax, I'm going to weave your Promotion along with Imparting the necessary knowledge within your mind Mister Raven." Dalla explained simply within her child-like voice as she slipped into a Meditative state of Clarity and began the work. This wasn't quite like Hyrune's Unbinding to his senses but rather an adjustment of a process that had already begun in his being. A fine weave, impossible to see but felt all the same lashed out at Hyrune's body. A numb, tingling sense ran through his being like a rather severe case of static electricity followed by a ceasing that ended in a euphoria that luckily only affected the mind rather than body. Otherwise, some embaressing situations could result from arcana to say the least.

The end result of this was enabling Hyrune to be able to create any Apprentice spell for Mysticism that was further explained to him along with his Vis reserves being some three times larger than beforehand.

OOC:
mhmm...

Cheers, Matt

HyRune nodded and held still as the waves of vis and ara wrapped around him. He felt something penetrate to his core, where a sudden release was felt, as if a floodgate had opened. The blind man gasped at the burst of euphoria that spread through his system. He felt awash with power, and at the same time drained of it by the natural effects of a Promotion. For a brief moment, images of his past jumped out of his deep memory to haunt him, but he let them wash away. Knowing what to expect, it was easy to stave off an experience similar to that of his unbinding.

When it was over, HyRune could only stare (blindly) in Dalla's direction. "Intriguing," was all he said however, his voice quiet.

Smiling at her own success, there was always something nice about seeing a job well done and the lack of blood coming from Hyrune's ears was a good sign. She'd have been curious about whether his eyes were bleeding, but it might've hit a nerve with their apparent loss. Especially if the sockets themselves were completely hidden behind such a pleasant lacey exterior. "It is, isn't it. Now, be careful next time you cast because you're going to naturally want to use a lot less Mana than you're capable of drawing even if you don't realise this. This is cause your Vis reserves used to regenerate really slowly and only fill up a little bit Mister Hyrune." Dalla explained shortly before continuing.

"Now, your Vis reserves regenerate about three times faster and there's about three times as much... this means that when you cast Initiate spells now you're probably going to make them much stronger than you intend because you'd be guaging your own capabilities from when you were an Initiate. Okay?" Dalla continued, biting down on her lip gently as her fingers drummed nervously against the tabletop. "Now, Mana Shaping is combining two spells into the one or making rather simple modifications to an existing spell... while your Vis settles, I'd like you to have a go working two Initiate spells together to create one larger and more complex weave."

HyRune frowned, thinking. He wasn't certain exactly which spells to combine, or what effect it would result in. Invisibility and Objectify? What would that do? Turn him into an invisible cabinet? More interested in seeing what would happen if he combined more unrelated spells, HyRune elected to use Objectify merged with a healthy dose of his most oft-used spell, Awareness. These were two that he had practiced much on their own, so he was very familiar with how to weave each. He drew upon his own vis and effortlessly created the threads of power to cast Awareness, but then, before releasing the power around him, the Blind Thane wove an Objectify spell. Carefully, new at the process, he tried to do as Dalla had instructed, interweaving the second spell with the first to create something new. The result would be something even he did not recognize.

He cast it anyway.

The two spells though Hyrune weren't the most compatible when it came towards Mana Shaping because there wasn't any tangiable links between the spells themselves. Watching with a puzzeled look, Dallandra's fingertips tapped against the desk impatiently - index finger through to little drumming against the desk over and over again. Working Objectify and then Awareness, Hyrune was able to change his own appearance into an inanimate object and determine the magical spells about himself which seemed to be Dallandra in entirety which was a little odd in itself.

"Hmm... no... you're handicapped in more ways than your sight." Dallandra muttered more to herself than Hyrune, as if he was some bypasser rather than her student. "You lack creativity if that's all you can figure from the Initateship... well no matter, I'll give you some options and perhaps one of the ideas will appeal to you Mister Raven." Dallandra continued with a slight shrug of her shoulders. With any luck Hyrune wasn't going to be another hopeless case like that funny man with the broken nose Rubeus had a fondness from... Wirvie? Girvan? Something silly. Not that the Faerie Linwing was any better.

"How about a 'Psionic Orb' with 'Invisibility' cast upon it so nobody can see it comming... or perhaps a merging of 'Terrify' and 'Enfeeblement' so a person runs away scared and trips on their feet as they scamper away...?"

HyRune thought about what Dalla had said, his lips pursed and his brow furrowed in thought. The general idea of what she wanted was becoming more clear now, but he was too independent to try one of her specific suggestions. Instead, he elected for an original combination, but one which he felt would accomplish more than his last attempt had.

Carefully, HyRune wove two unlikely spells together--Invisibility and a spell he'd not practiced as much as some of the others--Suggestion. This time, however, HyRune had a definite purpose in mind. He melded the two energies together as best he could, merging the Invisibility spell into the area of Suggestion that was supposed to contain the emotion or sensation being suggested. Once he thought the spell ought to work as intended, he mentally tossed it at Dalla's mind.

If it had worked, she would momentarily be as blind as her student.

Now this, Dallandra ap'Tindomerel knew was exactly the kind of creativity that Hyrune was going to need to be able to call forth at whim if he was to get anywhere in arcana. Nine out of ten students of arcana failed here, able to manipulate the energies but stunted as an Apprentice or Journeyman and so unable to go any further. They simply lacked the understanding to be able to manipulate, modify spells in a unique pattern, to redfine and explore arcana that little bit more and prevent the Disciplines from becomming naught more than textbook theory.

Mind, there'd always be Masters and Mistress's about who thought like that. But at the end of the brightening, they'd always be surpassed by people who thought creatively rather than quill and parchment mechanics.

Manipulating his Vis and Ara together to perform the necessary Arcalysis, the twin spells of Invisibility and Suggestion moulded together so that 'Suggestion' no longer required the basis of a single word and replaced it with the concept of nothingness. Dallandra's eyes gave out completely, revealing absolutely nothing and with that the little Elfin girl smiled happily. Her voice beaming with joy at Hyrune's own success even as she ripped his spell apart as if it was nothing of consequence with a Dispell of her own.

"Great! Now, don't expect that to work on everyone because it won't... but any Initiate of Arcana, or a Mundane would easily be blinded by that. Even Apprentices would have a bother and be forced to Dispell it or something Mister Raven." Dalla exclaimed, drumming her fingertips again upon the edge of the table's surface. "Very, very good... that's all there is to Mana Shaping after all. Now we're going to go to creating a Circle of Magic. What exactly about them do you know Mister Raven?"

The blind man was extremely pleased that his effort to Mana Shape had been successful. He was surprised at how easy it was to cast the two spells at once--but then, Dalla had explained that he know had access to three times the power he'd had previously. The difficulty had not been in drawing on the two different castings but in interweaving them, and even that had been successful on teh first attempt--a fact which could not fail to be immensely satisfying.

"Nothing," HyRune confessed in response to his instructor's inquiry, "I believe that's the very first time I've ever heard the phrase before. Perhaps yuo'd care to enlighten me?"

"Nothing..." Dallandra intoned, and before she could help herself her childish voice soon followed through with a sarcastic "Great." It probably was just a little bit too much to expect hopeful Apprentices these Era's to actually do a little bit of research about the work they wished to soon undertake. But no, it seemed ever more the case that Masters and Mistresses were forced to explain absolutely everything when there was nice textbooks about that anyone could just... read... blind... oh... right.

Feth

"Very well, a Circle of Magic is a standardised spell that is potentially possible by any Mage of the Primary Six Disciplines of Arcana. Song and Ikos are exceptions to the rule, and so it can be assessed that they really are the Minor Magics rather than something a competent Mage deals with." Dallandra started with a smile, knowing not everyone agreed with this particular assessment. "Now, a circle is drawn on the ground or carved into it - not absolutely perfect, they're more difficult than they sound. But as close as can be managed, the closer the circle is to being a proper circle - the stronger the spell will be. What they do, is prevent movement from a certain direction. Prevention of anything entering, or anything leaving."

Pushing herself off the table, a rattling sound filled the air as the table proved to have a slightly uneven leg on one side. The books themselves teetering, but never quite managing to fall over just yet. "Now, I have a circle drawn on the ground already... but that won't help if you can't see it - a problem with your eyesight and lack thereof unfortunately... so we'll make a little tiny circle for you rather than a big one. " wandering around the room and claiming a stick of chalk, Dalla grabbed Hyrune's hand and set it within before continuing. "Now, draw a circle on the ground... and then start to Channel Psionic energy into the rim of it and concentrate on a purpose - Prevention: Inside or Outside, not both at the same time."

HyRune nodded and followed instructions to the letter. Carefully he drew a round shape on the ground--as perfect a circle as man could draw, which was impressive considering his handicap. The circle was only about a foot in diameter, wide enough for a fae or gnome to stand in but not large enough for anything bigger. He was not confident enough in his blind artwork yet for large shapes.

Once the circle was drawn and the white powdery substance described its curves into the floor of the classroom, HyRune reached once again for the comforting embrace of clara. Carefully, he drew from his own vis and shaped the resulting mana into channeled energy that he focused on the circle. Guiding the energy around the curves, he built up walls to infinity. When it was done and a light sheen of persperation coated the blind Apprentice's brow, he released the energy and nodded.

"All right," he told Dallandra, "You should be able to enter it, but be unable to exit."
