Scroll [Sacrum] Forgotten.

Timestamp: Autumn of Era XXIII

Arx Fidelitatis. A place of forgetting. A place best forgotten.

Secrets :
When the best secrets are kept in the open. A small little decripid chapel several blocks away from the Basilica Ecclesiae dedicated to the Arch Archon Maj.

Lady Chrysalis Selanara was dying. It wasn’t supposed to be this way, but the Gods and Goddesses of Aetheria had other things in mind it seemed for the Paladin of the Faith.

Bodies lay strewn about the streets, blood slowly trickling into the gutters and the groans of the wounded were being drowned out by the toll of church bells from the Basilica. A half dozen other Paladins lay upon the ground, their armor rent and weapons broken.

Almost twice that number of Vigiles of Diana could be found, as well as a number of heavily armored forms of the Fists of Maj. Dead and dying, wounded and in dire need of medical treatment.

And the Lady Selanara dragging herself up upon the steps of the chapel one by one, the smear of blood marking the slow passage as oblivion threatened. A dead Paladin in the doorway, a handprint stained in blood upon the chapel’s old wooden doorway.

A secret that was shared was no secret at all. And soon enough, it was a secret that would be going to the grave.

He had appeased the guilds of Nexus Prime. He had won the affection of the people of Aslangrad. He had rebuilt the roads connecting the numerous cities of the north. Governing Arium had demanded every ounce of his time, from the wee hours of the morning to the late hours of the night, and yet, there was always work to be done. Bandits from the east, whose hideouts resided within the borders of Vesta, had terrorized the smaller villages of Arium for some time, and they needed to be dealt with in the only manner that they understood: the sword.

Had he only been the High Lord of Har’oloth, Faust Kityre’versi would have ridden across the invisible line that divided the two provinces and laid waste to the highwaymen without a second thought. He did not fear the Church of Faith, nor did he care that it had allowed the criminals to rampage without consequence. However, he was mindful that certain things were not “acceptable” now that he was the Governor of Arium, and riding a force into Vesta without permission was probably one such thing.

Fortunately, he had an amiable relationship with the Governor of Vesta, Roscarnis de Lylles. He could have simply written his longtime ally, of course, but there were matters of trade and commerce that he had hoped to discuss with him as well.

Mounted atop a sleek elven windstepper as white as snow, the Vysstichi Lord lazily guided his horse along the way. He was not particularly in a rush to meet the Lord de Lylles, mostly because it had been a long time since he had been to Sacrum, formerly known as Diana. In fact, the last time had been when he had visited the first Ancient Aelyrian that he had ever met, Aerienne Sarista, and her adopted daughter. That had been eras ago, yet he had not forgotten the sheer splendor that Sacrum always seemed to exude.

Except for this day.

He spotted the bodies a fair distance away, most of them lying still and leaking rivulets of blood into the street. The mere sight of the macabre scene caused him to jerk his mount’s reins backward, and within seconds, his jaw dropped. As if the sight of the dead was not cause enough for alarm in the sacred realm, their composition certainly was. He recognized the city guard immediately, then some of the accoutrements that branded the fallen as members of the Paladins of Faith and the Brotherhood of Maj as well. It had been a long time since he had seen anyone wearing the badge of the latter, but he did not mistake it.

Alighting from his horse and landing quietly on his knee-high black boots, the dark elf suddenly caught a glimpse of movement coming from a small chapel nearby – a gravely-injured woman clawing her way up the steps. Without hesitation, his legs pumped forward and he found himself racing towards her, a stern expression woven on his visage as he tried to reach her. “What happened here?!” he pressed, his gaze softening when he noted the extent of her injuries. “You need a healer,” he continued, glancing over his shoulder to see if anyone was around to assist.

He searched for a wound that he could apply pressure to with his gloved hands in the meantime, though he had been around death long enough to know that this woman was more likely than not relegated to her doom.

Boots crunched against paved road. He knelt down at the side of one of the Fists of Maj. "Rest easy, brother," the words were calm and utterly drained of any empathy. "Glory awaits you in guarding the Sun Throne." He whispered the final rites to the man as the light drained from his eyes. His gloved hands closed them, to keep the man from staring into the unknown.

The Logician did not know his name. He had never seen this man before in his life, but he knew what the emblem of Maj stood for. He knew what a Fist was and he knew he had not sold himself cheap. He was not here to question the dead and the dying. He had other business to attend to.

As Adrian de Aquinas he had business in this city. Towers that needed to be erected. So he had come here as the alchemical entrepreneur of Jaedaxia. His skin looked human enough and if a dead man knew he was secretly a priest of Orod then that was a secret that would not leave this place.

He knew what the Arx Fideltatis was. That someone had tried to violently break in was… worrisome. The Logician did not bother with trying any healing. He could tell at a glance what wounds were fatal and which were not, still, he picked his way through the bodies. Moving with the callous demeanour of one who had seen death and had no fear of its dead meat. Finally, he stopped. Right at the very gates.

He removed the glove from his left hand, looked briefly at the tattoo at his wrist, and took the sword from the paladin who waited there.

There was a Vysstichi riding towards a scene of conflict. It was almost inevitable that this was to be taken entirely in a wrong way as Faust rushed towards the Lady Selanara only for his actions to draw the attention of one of the Paladins’ comrades. Weak though it was, Faust could sense the build up of Thaumaturgy as one of the other wounded tried to lob a Light Dart directly at the Elf’s face.

Wounded, and missing – the piteous explosion broke some rock from the chapel wall and little else as the Knight lost consciousness from its own effort in trying to intercept the likely hostile.

Not that the Lady Selanara was keen on Faust laying hands on her either, stumbling backwards and raising her gladius weakly up in a defensive position; scowling as the obvious was painfully stated. The will was strong but the body was oh so unwilling as Faust could see fresh blood along the underside of the Paladin’s breastplate as if she’d been gutted, and another wound at the left armpit where the breastplate and chainmail showed quite a few broken links.

“You shall not pass, Aeternian.” Selanara swore, unable to stand, but there was a very real possibility that she might be able to literally hamstring Faust if she got a lucky swing in.

Darian? Not receiving of quite such hostility. Humans tended to blend in far more amongst Sacrum than Vysstichi, such as it was. Picking his way through the bodies was a different kind of distasteful activity, but with a distinct lack of anyone to garner opposition? He was up one sword, and a lucky (though not for the original owner) rabbit’s foot, and a few silver coins for good measure.

Information flowed through Darian as he grasped the sword. It had been a much used sword. Not one to gather rust and spend the winter in an armoury to be forgotten. No, it was a sword that had had but one owner since its forging (a blacksmith in Evile), a Fist of Maj that had served the Church of the Faith in a small village named Beryl that had been purged after an infestation of Zygran worshippers. The sword itself had come into contact with many, dozens, hundreds... it was a very effective sword. But now its owner wasn't going to be finding much use of it.

OOC;
Vireylda, one more round and then I’ll presume non-interest I’m afraid.
We’ll be operating on a weekly-ish postying schedule.

Cheers, Maddyn

The dark elf skidded to a graceless halt a second before the Light Dart suddenly entered his periphery and slammed into the chapel wall. Nearly stumbling, he instinctively thrust his left hand beneath him to the street and braced himself from falling. His other hand, having found its way to the bejeweled hilt of the long sword at his side in the meantime, relaxed slightly when he realized that the spellcaster – a paladin – had fallen unconscious. He waited a second or two to be certain that the warrior was not feigning incapacity before continuing onward.

What in Aeternia was happening?

A grimace formed as he regarded the unsteady woman, who bore obvious signs of trauma and heavy bleeding. Judging by her attire, she was clearly a paladin, though he suspected that she would not be one for much longer if her wounds were not tended to. He warily eyed the gladius that she flourished in front of her, and more importantly, the determined fire in her gaze – she clearly had every intention of using her weapon if necessary.

I just got here. I’m not your enemy,” he insisted, relinquishing his grip on his sword and holding his empty hands in front of him. “My name is Faust Kitrye’veresi. I’m the Governor of Arium.” Mindful not to step within striking range of her blade, he hoped that his name would elicit some measure of recognition. For a moment he considered brandishing his signet ring to bolster his claim, but he opted against that decision when it occurred to him that the dragonlich insignia of House Kitrye’veresi would probably only add to her perception that he was an Aeternian.

I have no intentions of harming you,” he continued, speaking slowly and softly as to not alarm the woman any further. Even a cursory at the surrounding carnage was enough to elicit an enormous amount of confusion. From what he could see, the dead comprised of paladins, Vigiles, and the Fists of Maj. But where were the assailants? Not for a single moment did he believe that anyone could have done this without suffering any casualties in the process.

Unless . . . . No, it did not make sense, but the arrangement of the corpses strewn along the street suggested that . . .

He glanced at the blood that leaked from underneath her armor. “But if you don’t get help soon, none of this will matter. Is there someplace that I can take you?

And what are you trying to protect?

She'd come here seeking knowledge, and that was the sort of thing that the shadow elf craved above all else. Her quest for legalized necromancy was the sort of thing that one didn't just flaunt in front of the church. However, she was a firm believer in the idea of knowing the enemy.

SO when she walked down the street, and saw the scene before her, Vireylda couldn't help but approach. Her hood lowered and gaze wary. She noted that Faust was here as well as what appeared to be a human male. Vireylda was a few feet away when she spoke, concern inherent in her gaze. "Those injuries look severe. She won't make it without some kind of help." She knelt near the woman, though careful to make sure she was beyond striking distance. "I do have some skill in healing, perhaps I could be of assistance?"

Hurm. Knowledge was always valuable. He had hoped for more of an insight into what had happened here, but what fate offered up for him he would take.

The alchemist dropped the sword, its blade clanging against the stone steps, and put his glove back on. Not having to look at the pale human skin made him feel somewhat better.

The dead and the dying would not be much of a hindrance to him. He knelt in front of his case and pulled out a wooden box about the length of his forearm. The carving on it belied its purpose, hiding lines that would otherwise be obvious. He gave it three twists and then a quick jerk made its purpose obvious. A smaller crossbow, certainly, but one that would do the trick.

The alchemist loaded up one of his bolts and stepped inside the doors. If this was what the outside looked like, there was sure to be more of it inside. It paid to be prepared and the alchemist was nothing if not prepared.

Mendax.” the Paladin retorted, her features twisted between a grimace of pain and a sneer as she rebuked Faust. Vysstichi. There would always be those who didn’t care to see beyond first impressions. Not that open hands and the professing of Faust’s status did anything but prompt another feeble swipe wither blade and a, “Aeternian sordem, as if the Paladin would much rather go to the grave than allow one of the Elves tainted by Meephos and Haya to provide assistance of any sort.

Faust may have had no intention on bringing harm, but the Paladin before him? Had she been in a healthier state evidently didn’t share the Elf’s own code of ethics.

Sneering as Vireylda appeared, only to both offer compassion and aid – and allow Faust to stand before them without trying to strike the Aeternian down. It was a bad brightening. Consciousness though seemed fleeting, and the odds of Faust or Vireylda being stabbed for their troubles was dropping by the moment.

Meanwhile, Darian had an itty bitty crossbow as he stepped past the threshold and the conversation taking place. Entering by and discovering the inconvenience that was having to step over and around bodies. None opposed Darian, and insofar as he could tell? Dead and unlikely to inconvenience him overly outside blocking the way forwards in places.

His long sword was in hand an instant later, its silvery-white edge glistening in the morning light. With a flick of his wrist, he slapped his blade atop the paladin’s feebly-swinging one and near its hilt, then jerked his sword-arm out wide to pry it from her grasp. He did not know the meaning of the words that poured from the wounded woman’s mouth, but her acrimonious tone and hostile response were all he needed to understand that she would not accept his help, nor would she ever.

Oh well.

Leave her,” the dark elf gently advised Vireylda, whom he had noticed out of his periphery only seconds prior. His voice was sympathetic, showing that he pitied the dying paladin for their misunderstanding, but it was nevertheless edged with a hint of annoyance as well. The human’s stubbornness would spell her doom. “There’s nothing we can do for her at this point.

He offered a nod to the Esh’lahier and then turned his attention towards the door that the paladin had been guarding prior to his arrival. “Let’s see what provoked this massacre.” As the human woman could not even clamber to his feet, he was not worried about her pursuing them. However, he was mindful of the Light Dart that she had shot at him earlier.

Within a few seconds, he erected a skin-tight Force Shield around himself and Virelyda, then motioned for her to follow him. Before he crossed the threshold, though, he glanced over his shoulder at the Esh’lahier. “By the way, no matter what you do, try not to use your magic here . . .” His gaze darted towards the sea of bodies that laid outside.

They will not understand,” was the last thing he said before plunging into the corridor beyond.

Faith.

Truly, there probably wasn't a more pervasive element than faith. It had it's hand from the lowest peasant, to probably the Empress herself. All encompassing and powerful, faith was something that even she understood. For was her crusade not governed by her faith in the belief that one day, her goal would be realized? The legalization of necromancy was something that she wanted with all of her heart, the possibility to practice the art that she had been given without fear or reprisal. For it was not as if she had chosen the sphere that she had found herself open to. Whatever had done that, dwelled in the fickle realm of fate, and thus unknowable to her, at the very least. Faith she knew, could be the harbinger of many great things. Battles had been fought and won, miracles had been preformed. For many, these things were only possible with the power of faith.

Yet as she stared at the dying paladin, and the hissing contempt that dripped from her every syllable, Vireylda knew she was seeing the darker side of the coin. For it could also lead to blind obedience, something that she knew she was seeing in the woman before her. It was frustrating, to say the least. They had the ability to save her, even if she was one Vireylda would normally deem an enemy. Or, at the very least, would be attacked and have to defend herself. Again the anger reared it's head, not of the woman's stubborness, but that they had to be placed against one another like this. Whatever was within the confines of the building, could have been attacked together rather than with this schism.

She knew there was nothing she could do though. Whatever aid she might have rendered would be rebuffed. The idea of raising the woman to serve them in death briefly crossed her mind, in a purely practical sense. However, it was quickly purged. No matter the direction that these had chosen, such a thing would be the greatest insult she could deliver onto them, and she would not disgrace those whom were already fading away with an act that even she would consider blasphemous. Plus, it would that much more define the stereotype that Necromancy could only be used for nefarious purposes.

So instead of going over, she turned away as Faust suggested, a frown on her face as she walked with him. A heavy sigh escaped her lips, and she slumped just slightly. "I might have saved her, would she have let me. Another life lost without reason." She truly did value life, despite her abilities. With her studies, Vireylda had realized just how fragile it was, and that it needed to be protected by all costs. Simply because, while life burned in an individual, their possibilities spread out before them unending. It was only in death that they cased, becoming limited instead. The options given to them only imparted by those like her. Here, as she stared at the woman, she could sense the passing that was to come, the ember slowly burning away and despite her knowing the woman belonged to the church, it did not fill her with any sort of pleasure.

When the force shield occured she blinked, and looked to the High Lord appreciatively, especially as he suggested she not use her magic, and she nodded succintly. "Thank you for the warning, and the protection." She cast one more gaze back at the dying paladin. "Your words ring true. As I might have saved her, I know that those who dwell here, upon realizing what I am, would not extend me the same courtesy."

As if to cement the idea she pulled her sword loose from it's own belt. It was not anywhere near the quality of Faust's, but it would protect her, hopefully. That done, she gripped the blade in hand, and followed the High Lord within.

The alchemist had a crossbow. Loaded neatly with a sleep bolt. On the whole he preferred to incapacitate rather than kill. Especially at a time like this. Having met no opposition when passing through the gate he moved further inside, listening for the sounds of battle. He picked his way through the field of bodies carefully, taking note of wounds as he did so. Darian had not spent years as the unofficial coroner to the Jaedaxian guard for nothing. These bodies spoke to him as much in death as they did in life and what they said was troubling enough.

These were hallowed halls. There had been schisms within the Church before. If the vigiles and the Fists of Maj were truly fighting, then for this place to be involved was very bad indeed. Even during the time of the Church of the Sacred Three and the Archonic Heresy they had stayed out of this place. It served a function that few dared to even consider disrupting, never mind abandoning. If that particular theory was wrong and there were more nefarious forces at work here then things were both worse and better than he had supposed.

This was where the sacred relics of the Church was kept. If it was under siege, then it was time to lift it.

Disarmed of blade, if anything the Paladin’s visible rancour only deepened as Faust ensured that he wouldn’t be subject to any close calls with the weapon. Even a raw beginner only had to get lucky once to be dangerous. The addition of the Force Shield around both Faust and Vireylda only reinforced the Paladin’s own unlikelihood of proving problematic in the immediate future. Short of bleeding all over the pair anyway.

Into the darkness of the corridor, where Darian and the itty-bitty crossbow he wielded served to reinforce that the only danger truly now lay ahead of Vireylda and Faust. Well, unless either of the pair tripped upon some of the bodies that inconveniently lay in the path into the chapel. Or rather, one of the entry points into the catacombs that lay beneath Diana/Sacrum and the network that had lain more or less undisturbed since the Shadow Knight Darksoul had waged war against the seat of the Church of the Faith.

The candles didn’t look like they’d been changed in all that time, so much as new wicks inserted within the molten drippy mess.

Most of the wounds to be seen were brought about through bladed implements, but every now and again the trio would see indicators that the blades had been very, very hot when they’d entered the individual. Those that suffered cauterised sword wounds were always the Vigils that had been felled rather than the Fists of Maj.

Not all of the bodies too were recent as the corridor opened up into the musty smell that was the catacombs proper. Crevices and shelving along the left side of the room that contained a number of urns and bodies wrapped heavily in gauze.

They’ll kill you on sight if they find out,” the dark elf promised his companion. As much as he supported her plight to indoctrinate the Empire on the positives of necromancy, it would be centuries – millennia, even!- before a practitioner of the dark arts was ever allowed to grace the streets of Sacrum without being molested. He glanced at the sword that Vireylda clutched in her hand and nodded. That would probably be the only weapon that she would be able to avail herself of this brightening.

After plunging into the shadows of the structure’s entrance, the dark elf was quickly greeted by the sight of the Vigiles and the Fists of Maj littering the stone floor. They presented a minor obstacle to navigate around, though the Vysstichi took his time in order to survey the scene closely. The cauterized puncture wounds told him that the Fists had employed their share of magic in the fight.

It was soon after the smell of old corpses reached his nostrils that he spotted a figure a short distance ahead of them, the shape of a crossbow clutched in hand. The man did not wear the uniform of either the Vigiles or the Fists of Maj, leading the dark elf to believe that he was not one of the combatants.

You there,” he called from behind, approaching loudly enough so as not to startle the crossbow wielder. “My companion and I just got here and saw the massacre outside. What in Aeternia is going on?” As if to capture his point, he held his hands out to either side of him as he glanced at the urns and the wrapped bodies.

He hoped that the man had some information, but if not, he supposed that they would soon learn something depending on where the corridor continued to lead.

Grandmaster Swordsman"Throughout Aelyria's history, there have been tales and stories of mythological warriors sometimes mistaken for blessed or divine entities. Godlike fighters, the Grandmasters are forever remembered for their valor and are known to break the physical limitations seemingly at will, capable of Masteries that lesser fighters can scarcely comprehend, let alone attempt. Often called one-man armies, Grandmasters are able to defeat countless lower-proficient fighters without much difficulty. Their physique is a testament to their life-long struggle to achieve this near-perfection; through enough conditioning and practice, a Grandmaster can withstand amazing amounts of physical pain and anguish. Incredibly fast and strong, their courage and valor enable them to seemingly perform miracles." - Arms Primer | Correspondence | Glory of the Conqueror"The Aspect of Constantine infuses your words and actions; when you are engaged in armed or magical combat, commanding armies on the tactical battlefield, or planning a military stratagem for warfare, you will have a decisive advantage against a character of the same relative skill, all other influences being equal, and will be able to out-maneuver them." - Kaelon

The alchemist turned to look at the two who entered. A shadow elf and a dark elf. His own, pale face was partially hidden in the shadows of his hat, but it did little to disguise his human features. Adrian de Aquinas had business here, after all. And far more of a reason to do so than these benighted souls.

"Nothing that concerns you," he said, his voice carrying with it a hint of the Everwinter that once plagued Jaedaxia. "This place is sacred, I suggest you leave." The alchemist for the most part did not believe in adding emphasis to his word, emotion was a weakness after all. Even so he added a little emphasis on the word leave just to bring the point home. Their kind was not welcome here and added more than a few unwelcome factors to this puzzle, the alchemist did not like unknowns.

Darian wasted little time in trying to find one of the senior Fists. He plucked his sword from the remains of a dead hand. He studied the blade briefly and put it back, before picking another. He was keeping an eye out for a particular kind of sword, after all. The bonded blades of the paladins, useless to anyone else. Except possibly to him. One of those would do nicely. And confirm a few theories about what was going on here. A distinctly worrisome theory had formed in his mind, and he did not want anyone interfering with what he was doing here.

Vireylda Saharn is a malevolent Minion

She remained wary of the man, despite his crossbow. In her experience people that carried such a simple weapon were either very naive, or incredibly dangerous. This man struck her as the latter. Her hand flexed, the inability to use her magic weighingheavily on her. "I don't know about you, but mass slaughter with unknown causes does concern me."
