Border Patrol Assaulted by Pirates
Twenty-fourth brightening of Aperitus, Longest Winter, Era XVI
A brig was hijacked from the royal fleet this morning, as it was patrolling the border coast near Enamoria and Sheria. The event was witnessed by scouts from the royal legions stationed near the border, who sent out a runner immediately. Accounts from some of the surviving seamen indicate that the captain of the ship fought to the bitter end, taking down at least half a dozen pirates before succumbing to his injuries.
The pirates launched a surprise attack in the early morning, pretending to be a merchant ship blown off course from Daltina by the hazardous winds. The captain was initially considering sinking the ship, as per his orders to sink any ship coming from Sheria, but refrained from doing so because of the past few days storm in the area. The trade ship turned out to be heavily armed and managed to incapacitate the brig sufficiently to allow the heavily armed pirates on board, where they began to mercilessly slaughter and capture the unprepared seamen and officers.
Two royal ships answered the call of the runners and arrived at the scene, but the ships had already departed by then. The ships assisted survivors and resumed patrolling the area, doubling their efforts to prohibit both pirates and imperials from crossing the border and acting as they please.
