The Month of
Aperitus, in the Longest Winter, Era XVI.
My fellow citizens, I write to each and every citizen of the Kingdom of Aelyria from my desk at the newly created Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development. It is the intention of this article to explain clearly the purpose of setting up a new ministry and to call on those who believe in a new forward thinking kingdom to consider their own ideas for the shape of Aelyria for the future.
Discussions took place
during early winter this conversation called by Prince Milo was dedicated to a vision of the future. It has become apparent that much of the work of government has been reactive rather than proactive. Fire fighting the moment is insufficient to truly begin the process of recovery.
That is not the vision of the prince despite the travails of the kingdom it behoves us all to consider the future. The prince believes that government is the union of people and leaders whilst the government may lead the new progress without the support and input of the people it is but an empty gesture. Thus the beginnings of a new future were forged in conversation.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development [TID] was born out of a realisation that for the future to be forged it required a more modern transport system. Thus the prince has charged TID with the task of building new highways that will eventually link provinces and cities together. It was recognised that travel, commerce and security are all limited by the speed we can travel. A farmers produce can spoil on the cart if he cannot get his goods to market. The security of the nation is threatened if the legions cannot march quickly enough to a trouble spot. It is a fact that the provinces are unable to communicate with each other in any meaningful way this leads us to look inwards reducing our vision of the nation to mere city states reliant upon our own resources without care or concern for our fellow Aelyrians. Roads will alter this insular thinking allowing goods and people to travel further afield. They will increase the opportunity for inter-provincial commerce, allow safer travel and create business opportunities for those of a mind to serve the needs of travellers along these highways.
The Minister of War Lord Alexis Sapienta has graciously allowed that the legions are best suited to building these new roads and so the legions will be fully employed in this great task. However chances for civilian citizens to avail themselves of the employment opportunities the road building project offer will be opened up as planning progresses.
It is not only roads that will concern the TID the infrastructure of the kingdom requires a new hand and a vision for the future. Not only a practical vision but a new style that will allow each citizen to be proud to be a valued citizen of the nation. The time has come to look to the future no longer will the government react to the events of the brightening but shall be seen to plan for the long term. Thus this article is a call for a public debate as to the shape of the nations buildings and infrastructure. The prince has made it known that for the first time it is the people that will drive this new future. Thus the T.I.D will actively seek out opinion and comment from all citizens with a view as to the new style of Aelyria.
We are also very aware of the diversity of the nation long standing traditions and architectural styles are to be embraced, incorporated and valued. Thus as part of the new design of Aelyria full and enthusiastic representative of the diversity and common values we share will be recognised and celebrated. This philosophy will accept that the proud histories of the diverse peoples will not be swept away on the drawing board of progress only that from a shared sense of our common history and traditions that the diverse styles shall be incorporated but only with the will of the people.
In conclusion this ministry has a great responsibility one that I accept gratefully. Too long we have held to the shadow of history without looking into the crystal of progress. For too long the views of the citizens have been disregarded and the kingdom has and its precursor have deluded itself that the government were the only people who had a worthwhile idea. As we work to put this ministry together more articles will follow which will explain in greater details our plans but we call upon you the citizens to let us know what it is you want to see in the way of roads and infrastructure. We in the ministry may not be able to deal with all your needs immediately but without your input we recognise that priorities may well be set incorrectly.
We have turned over the sandglass of history and look forward to a better future.
