Abestat Leader Abdicates in Favor of Corrupt Relative

In the middle of an awards ceremony honoring soldiers including Sergeant Keeva and Staff Sergeant Yarrow, Lord Enamere Lastra stunned the crowd with the riveting announcement that he was stepping down from the leadership of Abestat. Furthermore, he was taking his entire council with him, opening every job in the city to the new community of citizens that were arriving each day.

Lastra, who is the self-proclaimed "Governor" of Prime Province, a title recognized by no one of any significant authority, and most certainly not Prince Antonius de Lylles, the traditional Governor of Prime and Lord Thane of the Imperial City, predicated his departure upon the premise that he would be pursuing more seriously his bid to become the Governor of Prime Province. Political analysts gave Lastra's chances at such a pursuit very little probability of success. Further complicating the matter is Lord Lastra's decision to abdicate in favor of an obscure and reportedly corrupt relative of his own house. An excerpt from his speech to Abestat citizens is as follows:

A moment later [Lastra] raised one well-muscled hand. "Today is a grand day for all of Abestat as we honor those who had done good service and remarkable deeds for our fair city. We have suffered these past few years, with war, crime, poverty and disease all taking their toll on Abestat." The Governor looked sad for a moment, then pointed at the crowd, at the new privates and those waiting to get their corporal's stripes. "You are here in part for your deeds in the Vyssie attack, but the fact is I must take full responsibility for the attack itself."

He then paused for a long moment, staring off into space, blinking a few times. "I. . . I was not a vigilant enough local leader, focused as I was too much on the big picture. Lately, it seems like I keep missing what's right in front of my face. Curse of old age, I guess." Enamere chuckled, and continued on, then suddenly paused, trying to find the words within him. "I . . . can't be both Governor of Prime Province and Thane of Abestat at the same time." A look of great reluctance crossed his face, and Enamere paused for a moment to dab at his right eye. "I failed you, and the deaths-- Vyssie and Abestatian alike-- are on my conscience." And now the longest pause yet. "To that end, I have decided that Rein Lastra will from this moment be your new Thane-- "

Enamere was interrupted at this point by several loud gasps and large mutterings in the crowd, and one misplaced bark from Aguie who was still cheering Polly on from before.

Eventually, the crowd quieted: "--while I go off and continue to attend to affairs of state in the absence of any real leadership from Audrey or Julos. In practical terms, this means I will go back to running House Lastra and the Tradewinds corporation, as well as doing what must be done for Alleria as a whole. Rein Lastra shall rule here as Thane, and I hope you accept and support him as much as you have myself or any of the Lastras that came before me."

That's all right, this is just the tip of the iceberg. As Alleria grows more and more away from the NPCs-in-charge-of-everything towards a system that's more PC-oriented, I would expect many more cities to begin to follow suit.

Hi! I read on the herald that many jobs are opened. I was planning to open a coffee shop, but is it possible to take Nimkin's Chocolate and change it into a coffee shop/general store. Or maybe i can apply for the job of clerk and through that position change the store a little.

at least i hope clerk is really the owner of the store or does Nimkin's have a owner already.

Yes, you can do that. That's the whole point of the article, to encourage people to come and do stuff like that. Any way you want to work it out is fine, so long as you roleplay it all out in-character. Those who do well will be rewarded, just as businessmen throughout time have been rewarded when their stores have done well.
