The city of Frigid River was best equipped for the fun and games of Primeheims. By tradition, Primeheims was a celebration of life, of a Goddess moving on to the next stage. As Carmelya goes, so go the people. Here in Frigid River, where the snow was plentiful and the ice readily available, the fever ran high. It was three days of celebration -- snowball fights, ice sculptures, ice-fishing competitions, sledding races, grand balls, sumptous feasts, and religious ceremonies. Now, more than any other day of the year, the city gates were thrown wide open, welcoming one and all to join the festivities.
The bazaar buzzed with cheerful activity -- people were buying presents to give to friends and family, and the tourists that came were sure to check out the myriad fineries contained within. The thick blanket of snow that dusted the ground hid the ugly (and smelly) scars from the sewer renovations and lent a softer edge to the Cold City. The rear section of the domicilium, the side that blended into the Old Mercantile Quarter, bustled with the din of dozens and dozens of sled dogs. Their masters, tried and true, had come to try their dogs. The pot was sweet - the award was some thousands of crowns - and the prestige a nice touch.
The artisans came from many corners to try their hands at the ice pulled from the city's namesake. Each year they turned out beautiful creations - flowers, animals, people. The reward, here, was good too - first place in the scuplting competition was 2500 crowns.
The first day of Primeheims was a general joyful chaos - the entire city turned out into the fields south of Frigid River and built trenches and fortresses out of snow. Then a giant battle ensued, and all those who were able joined in. Those who could not stood on the sidelines and cheered for their favorites. There was no point in it except the pure joy of the fun. Then, later in the day, officials would chip holes into the ice for the ice-fishing competition. Then the feasts began. Every chimney spouted smoke, and many people fell asleep at their tables, stuffed to the gills with delicious cuisine.
The second day consisted of the ice-sculpting competition, and the dog races. At the close of day came another round of feasting.
The last day was given to religious observation - the Temple of Carmelya traditionally held ceremonies honoring their Goddess, who was going to sleep in anticipation of spring. At the end of this day was the Grand Ball, when just about every house turned out their best and brightest in clothes worth hundreds of crowns.
By dawn on the fourth day the city would return to normal, tucked under the mantle of snow and the long winter. Until then... let the festivities begin!
