The State of the City: Start Here
We are under new management!
The (re)organization of the city will proceed posthaste. For the most part it is simply refining and cleaning up existing threads and reposting them as blank slates for your use. A few new locations will be added, and I think a few will quietly shuffle off the mortal coil(such as it is). Here is the link to the current (Link Map for Frigid River).
If you spend ANY time reading ANYTHING in F.R., please read the rest of this post. It will enlighten you to the general state of the city.
Please note that most of this information will not be generally known ICly by characters entering Frigid River from outside. You can behave as if you heard rumors about such and such information contained here, but it makes for better play if you discover it in-characterly as you go. There is a Meeting Square post (here) that discusses in-character information -- major events, rumors, so forth. That's a good place to start ICly!
This the current description of Frigid River:
Season: Winter
The Environment & Weather:
The river, always cold even in summer, is now a fraction of its former size, and now nearly completely frozen. On nicer days, people can be seen skating on the ice or making valiant attempts at ice-fishing. The trees are bare, and heavy with frost. There has been no lasting snowfall as yet, but the old men are murmuring, predicting snows as never seen before. For the most part, the weather is tolerable during the day, but dangerously cold at night.
The People:
The population count stands at just under 4,000 souls. The Pox took its toll here, too, but Frigid River's status as a trade city allows for a steady influx of 'new blood.' The majority of the population (roughly 70%) is made up of humans, and then around 20% goes to the dwarves, and the remaining balance is a healthy mix of elves and other races.
The political climate within Frigid River is unstable, and there are murmurs of civil unrest. The Governor has not spoken to his constiutents in a long time, and they feel abandoned. For the most part, the roles and requirements of the various positions of government have been forcibly placed into the hands of civilian-chosen people; Frigid River has always been a haven for the freeborn, and they intend to keep the city as they wish it to be. The overtures of the Legate are seen as unwanted meddling into the private affairs of people who simply wish to live.
Economy:
The major exports are lumber and fish; minor exports include furs, certain livestock, and some herbs and spices.
Major imports include: Grain, steel, and iron ore; minor imports include medical herbs and seasonal produce.
Due to Frigid River's unique hot springs, the town has essentially become a nice rest-stop in cold weather. There is also a rumor of some medicinal quality in the water that encourages healing. Whether or not this is true, the civilians do not discourage the curious. As such, tourism is a rising trade in Frigid River. Attempts are being made by the trademasters to encourage growth of herbs during season, due to their lucrative value and the general need for such herbs and spices. Whether or not this succeeds is questionable.
The majority of business done within Frigid River does not follow the 'logical' paths of business; the price one man pays is rarely the same price that the next man pays for the same item. Bartering and haggling are widely encouraged, and the village's trade center seems to thrive on the interdependency between vendors. This, too, is somewhat unstable, and there have been attempts made to move away from the free trade system toward supply and demand, to fall in line with the rest of the Empire.
