Office of the Imperial Judicator, Era XIV P.F.

The Office of the Imperial Judicator, Minister of Justice, began with triangular grey granite stepping stones that led to the front door. The triangles represented the three faces of justice, the Oaths of the Sacred Three, or the Trinity of the Aetherians; it was left for one to marvel and decide for themselves. Whatever the personal beliefs of the observer, their meaning was quite clear; Law, Order, Justice.

Along the path to the front door stood three statues. The first statue was of Ioannes with his three faces. It was a deep grey statue and Ioannes was Robed and holding a scale representing balance; the pillar of the law which must remain neutral, true, and righteous. The second statue was of Diana. It was a perfect white marble statue of her in which she was holding roses and was nude. It represented the purity and beauty of the law as well as it’s innocence. The last statue was of Aslan. The warrior god was in full armor and held his sword with both hands face down in front of him. The statue was black and it represented the honor and justice of the Law. The three colors represented the fact that the law was not just black and white but that morality provided for the grey in between.

The triangular path led to a series of steps, ten in all, twenty feet wide at the bottom but only ten feet wide at the top. The platform where the steps ended was ten feet high and twenty feet long to the front door. A pillar lined each side every five feet to the door. Inscribed in the walk was the text of the Annarian Code, written in Ancient Allerian. A mahogany set of double doors was the final destination with a member of the Imperial Guard on each side of the door, their icy gaze unblinking in its dedication to duty.

”Please show your Imperial Visa.” one of the guards stated who also verified its authenticity before handing it back to allow the visitor to enter.

Upon entering the main room which was thirty feet by thirty feet with a ten foot ceiling, a desk set in the center for the secretary to handle the brightening’s affairs. The secretary was a comely young hobbitess, golden locks and cheery outward disposition belying her firmly diplomatic demeanor. Blue eyes missed little, especially not when the Minister was concerned, a meticulous mind already endearing her to her like-minded employer. Appointments, requests, correspondence; all found their way though Daisy Greenburrow’s pudgy little digits.

“Serale and welcome. How might I be of assistance this brightening? Or do you already have an appointment?” she asked politely, voice a little cold for what one would customarily expect of a hobbit.

Three rooms were off of the main lobby. The first room was a conference room with an oval table stained deep red and capable of seating twelve people to which there were twelve chairs stained in the same color. The door was always closed and had no windows. A few pictures of various mountain ranges in the Empire lined the walls for the only décor in the room. The second room was a library with a chair in one corner and a small table for two in the center. The main core of books were legal documents, old court cases, and doctrine written by various legal minds both past and present. Resting on the table was a copy of the Annarian Code and the Articles of Imperium. The third room was the private office of The Minister of Law. It had one window to the outside and a large desk in the center. Two chairs faced the desk for guests. It too had little in the way of décor, at least for now. A door also broke off from this room where the Minister had a small space that held a bed in the event the Minister needed to rest his eyes.

2nd Brightening of Kalendryas, Winter of Era XIV – mid morning

Winter had set in and so with hat shoved down on his head with hair left undone and leather duster thrown over brown tweed trousers, suspenders and woolen shirt, Milo arrived on what had become quite the familiar scene of late, the usual entourage both proceeding and trailing him. He’d no appointment of course, but was hopeful that Ogabe had a candlemark or so to spare, or if not, then an opening later in the brightening given that none of his concerns were immediate ones. Still, there were a number of things he’d like to discuss, both official and personal, with fuzzy judicator and friend.

So sweeping his hat off his head and meeting the cether secretary with his usual crooked smile, he darted a glance towards the inner sanctum. ”Good brightening Miss Greenburrow. I wonder if he’s a candlemark or so to spare? I’d like to bend his ear a bit if he does, or arrange a better time if not.”

Timestamp: TBA, somewhere between the Preliminary Hearing and the trial date.

Not long after the Preliminary Hearing a letter addressed to Rogator Ali ben-Shazzar reached the Ministry of Justice.

Secrets :

To Rogator Ali ben-Shazzar,

The decision of his Excellency Prefect Judias White to establish Preponderance of Guilt on only one of three charges my client has been accused of can only be interpreted as a victory to the defense. Whilst one victorious battle does not win a war I am confident that due to my abilities and with the truth on our side my client’s innocence will be proven.

However in his wisdom Lord Andares has urged me to explore the possibilities of a settlement between the Allerian Empire and Malkaer Andares. Ever loyal to the Empire, His Lordship recognizes that whether he is acquitted or not, the Empire will suffer. If he is acquitted, the Ministry of Justice and to lesser extend the Imperial Government will suffer a tremendous loss of prestige. If my client is convicted the Lauryllian Provincial Government loses its credibility. And in both cases many funds will be wasted in what is sure to become a lengthy trial.

While a settlement never completely satisfies either party, given the alternatives a compromise may well be the smallest evil. I am interested in your thoughts on this matter.

With professional courtesy,

Truman Desren, Observator of Lord Malkaer Andares

Malkaer’s temporary office.

Milo:

”Oh, I don’t know, Your Excellency, I’ve heard katta don’t like that sort of treatment, sensitive ears or something like that.” she joked with a smile, before trundling off to poke at the Judicator once again on behalf of the Regent.

Without further ado was Milo shown in, finding a loose shirted Judicator fiddling about with a rather stout-looking cudgel. ”Ah, Excellency, how can I help you?” he asked, setting the weapon back on his desk with several similar items, each sized differently but of the same overall design. ”Just seeing which fits me, have to be willing to put forth the same effort as my Inquisitors, after all. Hopefully be able to get the Academy up and running this season, if not next. But I rather doubt that’s why you’re here.” he concluded, settling into his chair, all ears, bent or no.

Malkaer:

[OOC]Reply sent to your “office”.[/ooc]

Milo (again):

The invitation was read with interest, a wry smirk forming on furred visage as an equally fuzzy hand set to work scrawling a hasty reply. This was given to the cheery cetheress on her next trip into the office, with instructions to deliver it to the Regent post haste. Blue eyes went wide at the brevity of the note, but decorum won out, and she retreated to her desk with every intention of fulfilling the Judicator’s order to the letter.

Timestamp: Beginning of Winter, first week

Another office, another inquiry, as to what he'd end up doing he still had no idea. For although he wouldnt tell any of those he spoke to...Mr Sythe was looking for the best offer, not simply the first. A job to get him back into the ropes of things, a visitation around many offices and many people he knew well or knew vaguely, all of them got the same offer, only one of them would win his services...at least thats what they'd all think. Thus he now came to Ogabe's office and the Imperial Guard stationed outside.

Perceptive that his attitude was not the usual to face the Imperial Guard Duncan was none the less proper about his actions, one hand remaining at his side as the other fished into his coat for his Imperial Visa, holding it up and open, displayed to the guard who nodded after examining it and gesturing for him to enter. This he did after allowing any search they required, devoid of weapons and indeed anything except a little gold as he was.

He then stepped up to the hobbit and nodded to her in acknowledgement before her statement, finding her...suitable for Ogabe. After her request though he shook his head, his blue eyes calm.

"I have no appointment but I believe the Judicator may find time to speak with me, the name is Duncan Sythe, once the Imperial Magus."

The last was said for the secretaries benefit not Ogabe's, for he suspected that the woman would make no effort to go and bother her superior if he merely said he suspected Ogabe would want to speak with him, he knew many would say that and she would find it endlessly tiresome, a title however gave her reason to suspect that he was not just someone seeking a judicial favour, or would at least give her reason to disturb Ogabe if not justification carved in stone as he suspected the Katta would like.

Still wearing the grin offered the cether in light of her response, Milo made way into Ogabe’s office, the usual suspects trailing behind him. As expected, Sirs James, Pious and their underling counterparts respectively. The cudgel raised a curious brow of the Regent’s own, and a twitch of the same in regards to Sir James whose very demeanor and expression implied a particular moment of uncertainty. Noting the big man’s hesitance, Milo shook his head and took a seat with a wry grin. ”Don’t get all twitchy Sir James. I expect if the good lord judicator were planning to have a go at dispatching me, he’d come up with a far tidier way of going about it.”

”I think she’s taken a shine to me,” he jested with a chuckling reference to the cether before nodding in response to Ogabe’s explanation. ”I’m glad to hear it. Being the capitol city, chances are it will garner a good bit of interest where prospects are concerned. But no, actually I’ve come by to see if you have time to go over what we spoke about a while back. Last testament?” he reminded his fuzzy friend.

Eighth Brightening of the First Cycle in the Month of Immanis in the Season of Spring; Era I of the Celestine Mandate, Era XIII
Post Fractum. The First Era of the Regency of Milo L'Evienne

Rapidly a naval officer delivered a letter to the Minister of Justice's office.

Secrets :
To His Exalted Excellency the Imperial Judicator, Ogabe K'Tinga.

Serale your Excellency,

It is with great displeasure I write this missive to you, if you recall I sent you a missive in Junctior regarding the Captain of Vortex's guard committing crimes of slavery against Imperial Citizens and under the suspicion of several other crimes.

Unfortunately my suspicion of the man's guilt has been confirmed, and the extend of his crimes has escalated greatly and at great costs. On the seventh brightening of Kalendryas myself accompanying an armed force of one hundred and fifty men arrived in Vortex to place the Captain under arrest by the Imperial Government. Wherein the former Captain was chained and escorted out of the city with little resistance from either himself or his guard which was a great releave for myself.

However, during his escort back to Paxia to await your office's word we setup camp for the darkening and during that time a rider came to the camp bloody and wounded and informed us of an attack on his village by a band of men. Which surprised us due to the fact that the majority of the region was aware that there was an imperial force nearby. However after arriving to the village we found the majority of the village burning, its male residences dead and the attackers committing vile acts towards the remaining frightened female population.

During the time wherein we attempted to arrest those committing said acts within the Vortexian Village within the Imperial Camp Dimitri Wladisyaw posted his escape, violently killing four imperial solders with from what looks like his own fist, one of the chains that bound him, and then killed the men with one of there own swords. The marks on the men were grotesque to say the least and am by far an abomination of the body.

The camp was placed on full alert and we started a search through the region for the man who also stole an imperial horse. However during the search we were unable to locate him and the troops kept at it franticly to bring the treasonous criminal to justice. But to no avail, I have sent orders to Vortex to have the mans assets, lands and any other things to his name seized and sold off. The funds will be going to the coffers of the village that burned to the ground, burned by who we assume to be his own forces. The remaining will be given to the City of Vortex and Paxia to assist where there city officials deem best.

I felt it necessary to inform your office that Dimitri Wladisyaw is now wanted by the Imperial Legions for murder, theft, conspiracy, and treason against the crown.

In Service of the Crown, the Gods, and the People;
Provost Keldon Elsdragon
Surveyor-General, Allerian Imperial Legions

That Pesky (former) Imperial Mage:

Daisy raised an eyebrow, vaguely remembering the former Minister in passing from an errand she had been sent on as an assistant clerk what seemed like eras ago. That their careers had gone in decidedly opposite directions was a fact worthy of note, but not mention, especially in front of the person that had gotten the short end of the stick in that comparison. Instead, she simply nodded and trundled off to alert the Minister non-Emeritus to Duncan's presence.

A short while later, the cetheress returned, taking her seat once again before speaking. "His Exalted Excellency will see you now, Lord Sythe." she said cheerily enough, allowing him to proceed.

The scene which greeted the archmystic was nigh the same as it did countless others with business within. Ogabe K'tinga was seated behind a plainly made, if largeish, desk, a blue-silked Kemite of somewhat ageless appearance hovering behind attentively, usually tasked with drink service and other such menial hospitality tasks, leaving his employer free to conduct business with atention undivided. "Seraa, Lord Sythe, please, have a seat. Something to drink, perhaps?" he asked, the Kemite's attention raised slightly in anticipation of an order.

"All that aside, it's been a while. I was beginning to wonder if I was going to need to declare you legally dead and all that." he said non-comittally, betraying little of the curiosity he had for the enigmatic mage's activities of the past era.

Milo:

"Ah, yes. I took the liberty of drawing up something of a preliminary draft, so to speak. Where did I put that thing?" Ogabe asked himself, fiddling about with several of the copious quantity of drawers within his desk before grinning in triumph. "Here it is." he said simply, handing the document to His Most Imperial Excellency.

Secrets :
[i]I, Milo L'Evienne, being of sound mind and body, do hereby declare and enumerate this document as my last will and testament.

Upon my death, Ogabe K'tinga gets all my stuff.

Signed,

"If that's as satisfactory as I expect it to be, just put your signature on the line there, James and Daisy can serve as witnesses, I can send it to the Imperial Chronicler to make it official and we can wrap this up and go have a drink!" he said cheerily, practically shoving a pen into Milo's hand.

Keldon:

“Nothing for me, but the offer is appreciated.”

Duncan said in regards to a drink as he found himself a seat and crossed his legs, folding his hands into his lap and looking across at Ogabe. Indeed it had been a long time and there was most likely a lot of official business to discuss...in theory anyway, how much Ogabe wished to share with a man such as Duncan Sythe was more questionable.

“People have declared me legally dead before.” He remarked after a moment when they were alone. “It's never proven terribly troublesome, so you might as well have gone right ahead.” Hard to tell if he was joking or not, but he moved onward quickly enough to make it a moot point.

“I have been in contact with Milo, the Governess of Prime and a few other individuals and your another name on the catch up list so to speak. Checking out how things are, seeing if any help can be given, that kind of thing. I trust all is well with you?”

The mage inquired in all apparent honesty, apparently without a direct request for the Katta, merely a fishing expedition as it were, for now anyway.

Sebastian Denovansson is unknown and forgotten
Early Spring of Era XIV p.f.

A Letter made it's way to the desk of the imperial Judicator from a simple bard in Tearsfall.

Sebastian paid what little coin he had to have a provincial courrier send a letter to the Imperial Judicator for the crime committed by Lyr Tlansson.

Quote:
To: your Imperial Excellency,
The Imperial Judicator
Lord Ogabe K'tinga

From: Sebastian Denovansson
Citizen of Tearsfall
Citizen of Carmelya
Citizen of the Empire.

I do not know you nor have ever met you but am writing on behalf of a great tragedy in the small town of Tearsfall. I am a small town bard who plays music at The Naked Orc Tavern and Inn. I have never commited any crime nor broken any laws. I have played in this place for over two patterns providing music to its many patrons. This place is home of the local prostitutes but such is not a crime in the Empire.

Just recently our thane, Lyr Tlansson, made a proclomation closing down the Naked Orc and running all of us staff members out of town. For committing no crime or breaking no law, I am being run out like a criminal! I now have no money and no job and because of this proclamation am leaving Tearsfall for Natura in hopes of finding work to earn money to go to school at the Bardic Conservatory.

This will be no easy task given my poverty status. I had been trying to save up every crown I could while working a legitmate job in Tearsfall in the Empire in order to fullfill my dreams which came crashing down on me with this Proclamation. I do not know what will happen, and this letter will serve as record that if something tradgic were to happen to me, that I want Lyr Tlansson to be held personally responsible.

Does not the Articles of this Empire state that it protects its citizens and not throws them out on the streets to starve? Does it not say that the government positions were made to provide peace and prosperity not interfering with a person's right to work? I am no scholar but cannot imagine an Empire where this is not the case.

I seek retribution. I seek proper justice. I demand that the thane be brought up on charges for denying my rights as a citizen of this Empire. As I have said, I am no scholar, so trust in you to know what proper articles have been broken. I beg for aid. I can be reached at the Bardic Conservatory in Natura ... if my poor self is able to make it.

This is a record of the words spoken by our city crier on behalf of the thane before I was run out of town:

...Consequent to this notice, the Naked Orc Inn and Tavern has hereby been closed and all of its management and staff must leave the township immediately. The property is hereby confiscated by the town of Tearsfall, to be used for the benefit of the township ...

Can he take over an establishment on behalf of the city and run all of it's staff out of town when no crime has been committed?? I once again beg you for Justice!

Loyal Citizen of Carmelya and the Empire,

Sebastian Denovansson

This letter will be copied and sent to The Justicar of Carmelya, The governor of Carmelya, The Imperial Judicator, and The Imperial Regent in hopes of hearing some resolution to my improper treatment as a Citizen of The Empire.
OOC: Time Stamp vague due to the vagueness of the TS that initiated this letter

”Did you now?” Milo said with a curiously quirked brow, a suspicious one it had to be said in response to the Judicator’s grin while taking the document handed him. Taking a second or three to read over it, a crooked grin transformed his own expression while Sirs Pious and James looked on in a somewhat befuddled manner. ”You know,” he said slowly, pen in hand while he helped himself to a seat in front of Ogabe’s desk. ”come to think of it, there’s a ridiculously floppy and feathered hat in the back of my wardrobe, filched from my brightenings on the stage and just waiting to be bequeathed to someone deserving.”

Chuckling, he laid the document on the desk and made himself comfortable. ”Thank you my friend for the light hearted fare in advance of what can only be a somewhat depressing process. Nell has already prepared a similar document though I’ve not read it. It seems she had it drawn up shortly after we arrived in Prime and stored it amongst her personal belongings. Though I’ve no intention of perusing the thing. Out of sight out of mind I guess but she’s reminded me several times of the wisdom of these sorts of arrangements.”

Duncan:

The like reply to the mild jest drew a gentle smirk from the lean Judicator, the acerbic mystic's wit having come back from the dead along with him, apparently. Milo? he queried himself silently, wondering at the dynamics of that particular relationship. But once again, a puzzle for later.

"I've been well, personally speaking. The Ministry is progressing far more slowly than I would like, but that's government for you. As to help, I'm quite sure you're able to help any of the people you mentioned quite easily, myself included. The question then becomes one of what kinds of help you are amenable to offering. I would hardly deign to try to push a mage of your stature and power in a direction he does not wish to go. It would be...rude." he put mildly.

Sebastian:

[OOC]So noted, will contact the Carmelyn Justicar for a disposition request[/ooc]

Milo:

Golden eyes blinked once, then again, apparently nonplussed by the Regent's comments. Or at least bewildered.

"Excellency, we at the Ministry of Justice do not have a sense of humor that we are aware of." he stated flatly. "But if you wish a different disposition, I will surely oblige. I suppose the best place to start would be with a listing of personal assets and property. Barring that, a list of the items you wish bequeathed to someone other than your chief beneficiary. A list of beneficiaries too would be helpful in that arena." he said, pen in hand to take notes.
