The Road to New Coldmoon

First of Ioannes, Era XVII PF... Morning.

Diana's gates slowly faded into the distance as the pair set out on their journey. Traveling by horse back was quite a luxury for the boy, and all the more made him quite grateful for Trigg's presence, as well as Niven's company. Luckily the pair had no hurry to reach their destination, giving both a chance to enjoy the trip. Also it was important for Jirael to take note of the trip itself. Hopefully there would be no run in with anything they could not handle; conditions of the roads and perhaps even the villages that dotted them were all things that he felt might be worth noting.

He was a bit nervous about the whole thing. He was hardly trained for such a task, and given that it was asked of him by someone quite important (ignoring the details about how it all started) weighed heavily on the boy's mind... It made him smirk to himself just thinking about it. A strange thought indeed, he wondered what the Minister thought of the whole situation himself.

It was all really exciting as well, But what exactly the plan of action once he arrived was something that he had not worked out yet... There were still some holes in the whole thing, but if there was anything that he had learned, it was not everything goes as planned... Ever. It was best to play things as they came up. Though insight was still important. So many things played through his mind. He smiled to himself. He had many good consuls to fall back to, a comforting thought indeed.

For now, he watched the scenery as the road towards their destination stretched into the distance before them.

Keeping Jirael's new horse at a steady pace, Niven glanced over at Jirael from her seat at the front of the wagon. Trigg, her horse, was happily keeping the same pace, pleased to have such a light passenger. Trigg would have his turn pulling as well, but it would be in everybody's best interest to break him into it slowly. Niven knew that the horse wouldn't enjoy being tied up for too long and Jirael seemed to enjoy riding, so putting them together was a good idea.

Niven breathed deeply the fresh air. This was wonderful! She loved being on the road again. City's were nice for a short time, but nothing compared to the wide open spaces of the fields and meadows. It was always so peaceful out here, and Niven enjoyed the quiet and slower pace after the busy hustle and bustle and noise of the cities. She lifted her face to the warm sun and smiled. This was truly the season for traveling.

As she kept the road in her peripheral vision, Niven watched Jirael as he rode on. He appeared to be watching the road, though Niven knew him well enough to know that he was also deep in thought. She smiled to herself, and then decided it wouldn't be such a bad thing to bring the boy out of his reverie.

"Hey there!" Niven called to the boy. "You seem to have a lot on your mind for such a young person."

“It's just been so long since I've been on a journey like this, it...” he paused, taking in a small breath of the fresh air. “It is rather peaceful.” His eyes couldn't help but taking it all in, the view of the passing road, the clouds in the sky, the tree's that made their stands where they could. It was perhaps the first seemingly normal trip the boy had taken.

Yes, there were ulterior reasons for them traveling, and he knew each night he would need to document their findings, make sure that details of the conditions were taken into consideration, even when they would come to a village or small town to rest, the condition of that place would need to be investigated, but for the moment, it was good to just be moving.

His thoughts were also half occupied by maintain his position on his horse, while he had ridden upon the back of one many a time, he had never been the driver per say, and this control was rather new to him.

As the pair of travellers moved through the countryside, there was little by way of distractions. Not a traveller in sight for candlemarks on end after Jirael’eri and Niven met up on the road. Nothing beyond wide, open expanses of countryside that was showing the touch of autumn and empty fields that were emptied from the last mediocre harvest that had followed the Longest Winter. If anything, the road was far more deserted than it had any right to be – not a rabbit in sight nor the cry of a bird to show that there was life to be found anywhere near the pair.

Slowly, a tingling sensation formed at the back of Niven and Jirael’s skull. Treading it’s way through their temples as if they were now being subjected to an unusual amount of pressure – a change in altitude appropriate for having gone hiking through the Great Mountains or the Khardran.

One by one, ghostly figures materialise. Each one transparent and solidifying until finally light no longer shone directly through the spirits. Each one bore one of two distinct sets of livery – that of the Enamorian Coalition, some fifteen that were marching along the road that had originated from New Coldmoon. Another twenty four on the left side of the road were Orcs and Humans from Malice.

The Coldmoon ghosts simply marched down the road towards Niven and Jirael’eri, oblivious to the notion that on either side of the road, lurking as if they were hiding in great fields of corn or wheat, was the Malice ghosts.

oocsorry for being a little more then late

It was strange that there seemed to be an eternal calm on the roadside. Maybe calm was the wrong word, there was nature but not the kind that you would expect in a place with so little people. It seemed that anything that could leave had chosen to do such... and it was from the place that the pair were traveling that such things had chosen to leave from.

The tingling sensation that formed seemed to only be the preamble to the strange apparitions that formed at the edge of the road, one by one ghosts of perhaps was the past ( that was where ghosts came from after all, right? ) appeared, slowly becoming something seemingly very real. They looked like soldiers, but there shouldn't have been any in the area, at least not on this road, and if this was some sort of magic, it was not one that jirael had been familiar with (not that he was anything close to that knowledgeable on such things )

The boy turned to Niven, he was a bit at a loss as to what to do, the church did have things to deal with this, there were rituals and such for ghosts, exorcisms that could be performed, things that he had read about, had even witnessed a few, but never performed, or at that when it was right to perform them.
They didn't so far seem to interact with them, on one side there were Soldiers from Enamoria, the other were soldiers that had come from Malice, that he was sure of...

His eyes said that he was a bit worried about speaking, not sure if it would bring attention to the two of them, if they hadn't been detected already... and even then, if he knew one thing, Malice had few allies outside of Malice, and soon, the two sides would notice each other, and then He and Niven might find themselves caught in a battle on the road.

oocNo worries! Life happens :D

The quiet was enjoyable at first, but it had almost gotten to the point of being eerie after a few candlemarks. Niven had already started to feel a little uncomfortable with the lack of life they were encountering, but the tingling was completely unnerving. As the ghosts started to appear, all colour drained from Niven's face. 'This can't be good,' she thought, her heart sinking. She had hoped for smooth travel, but that seemed to be going out the window.

Glancing at Jirael, who had seen them by that point too, their eyes met and Niven could clearly see the worry in his eyes. Niven didn't have anything to say to reassure him. Looking back at the road, the ghost soldiers seemed oblivious to their enemy, but that would all end soon. Having already fought enchanted paintings who were impervious to all weapons aside from those arcane in nature, though their weapons were harmful to the living, Niven had no idea how they would even begin to defend themselves from these ghosts if the battle broke out with them in the middle.

Without even thinking, Niven began to pray in her head. 'Dear sweet Diana, keep us safe! Allow us to pass without getting involved...' The elf had no idea if the goddess would answer, but waited in frightened silence for whatever was going to happen to unfold.

With only the sound of the wind moving through the grass, there was a sudden mass of confusion surging through the ranks of the Keryn Ghosts of New Coldmoon as the ethereal soldiers gave off silent shouts and barks of command. The cause of such chaos being that of the Orcs and Humans that had originated from Malice having hurled a number of javelins in the Imperial Guard style. Already dead soldiers hit the ground or dropped; their spirits visibly wounded as the injuries that had been inflicted in life were replicated like a play for Niven and Jirael’eri.

The road before the pair erupted into a state of complete and utter pandemonium as the Malice ghosts rushed the Enamorian Coalition ranks, the two sides joining into a bloody melee that continued to bear an eerie silence. It was faint, barely audible to the two elves given the distance. But there it was, the sound of ground shifting, footsteps and non-corporal weapons leaving their mark upon the soil and roadwork. Dirt and pebbles rolled as if the ghosts were proving to have the ability to affect Telath proper.

And yet, it was not the only sound that could be heard. In the distance, in a hollow by the side of the road on the other side of the conflict was a whimpering sound that was likely Humanoid in origins. There was a brown and grey bit of cloth like the back of a person’s travel cloak was visible too from where the ditch dipped near the road.

All the while, the two sides continued at it. Neither breaking. Neither seeming to have the advantage over the other and in spite of the ambush and the initial casualties caused to the Coldmoon side of the ghosts, they had managed to hold their own through greater discipline and training than their Orc and Human opponents.

Jirael had an idea of how the battle was going to end, even though the side he was secretly wanting to cheer for was destined to be defeated... Still it was something to watch, a chance to see a part of history unravel before their eyes. As frightening and dangerous as the situation was, it was also something that gripped him. Though they had the power to affect the world, to what extent? And to what extent could they affect them...

In the distance, just as the wind picked up a small sound grabbed the boys attention, it was out of place... that's what made it stand out the most in the battle. Brown and grey cloth just visible from the side of the road, was someone there hurt by the battle? Was it part of the scene going on?

There was only one way to know, the boy turned to Niven, pointing out the cloth, it was still a bit away, but it seemed that they might have to help someone.

Never having been one to run from possible danger, Niven watched with rapt attention to the historic events that were unfolding in front of her. It was strange to see such a sight, though at the same time it was almost a treat to bear witness to the battle.

Barely being able to tear her eyes away, Niven's attention was caught by the whimpering on the wind catching in her pointy ears and Jirael's attempts to get her attention. Following the boy's line of sight, she found the grey and brown bit of cloth just as he had and nodded. It seemed that there was a real casualty in this battle between the ghosts.

Pulling the wagon off to the side of the road, Niven jumped down and climbed on Trigg's back behind Jirael. Taking the reins from the boy, the elf led the horse in a wide circle to keep them a safe distance from the battle while still getting them to their destination. Niven hoped that they would not be too late to help the injured poor soul.

Huddled up in the ditch, the drab-cloaked figure continued to peer over the edge. Watching the ghostly combatants continue to hack and slash at one another with a bloodthirsty fervor. Slowly but surely it appeared that the Orcs and Humans that bore the markings and livery of Malice were turning the tide with their superior numbers; if only because they had no compunctions about continuing to throw javelins and fire arrows into the melee. Apparently uncaring about the way that the projectiles hit as many allies as they did enemies so long as the end result was more Coldmoon ghosts dead or injured.

It was only as Niven and Jirael’eri drew closer towards the sole other living onlooker that the man registered their presence. Spinning around in haste and scrabbling to his feet, the brown-cloaked man managed to lose his footing in the ditch, dropping onto his hands and knees before continuing to scrabble and scurry upright again. “No! No! You cannot have me!” He cried in a thin, reedy voice before spinning back around to face the pair.

Clasped in hand was a bronze triangular medallion of the Church of Faith held at arm reach as if to ward off the two Elves. The man himself was quite short and broad of shoulder; though young of features. A line of patchy stubble marked the young man’s cheeks to obscure hollow cheeks and high cheekbones. When the cloak was pulled away given the man’s warding gesture, it revealed a mass of map cases and leather straps upon both of his hips. Embroidered upon his tunic’s right breast were the markings of the Royal Cartographic Society.

“Begone foul creatures of Aeternia!”

The man in the ditch seemed frightened, which was completely understandable considering the whole ordeal. It was no surprise that he clung to the medallion, though looking down at him Jirael couldn't help but wonder what exactly the man was doing out here... was he part of the whole illusion; though that was probably not the best thing to call it.

Extending a hand to the man, Jirael gave him a gentile smile “Sir, please... Let us help, We've come from Diana, what has brought you out here?

Climbing down off the horse, Niven walked slowly towards the man, her hands up in front of her. She wasn't sure if this man was armed, but she was very aware of her dagger on her hip and would not hesitate to use it if she needed to. "We are real," Niven said, slowly and clearly. "We have no interest in harming you, only assisting you to get out of here. Here," she said, reaching out one of her hands towards the man. "Touch my hand if you don't believe me."

Making sure not to make any sudden movements that might frighten the man, Niven slowly moved her other arm to point to the cart down the road. "We are merely passing through here. If you wish to catch a ride with us to the nearest village, we would like to help you," she said, still speaking slowly and calmly. "I suggest you make a decision soon. I have no idea what these beings are capable of." Niven gestured with her head towards the ghost battle, her eyes never leaving the man's. She was not about to break eye contact and have the man attack her.

“Begone I said!” The traveler insisted frantically in spite of Niven and Jireal’eri’s assurances that they weren’t part of the ghostly apparitions that continued to battle it out against one another upon the road. Scurrying back as Nivel dismounted and stepped forwards, the Church of Faith medallion was brandished before him a renewed fervor. “You cannot trick me! I see you! I will not allow you to have my soul, wretched creatures of the Umblat. May Turtas gnaw upon your rotten sides for eternity for your crimes!” He added shrilly, his voice breaking a few times here and there as he ranted.

As one of the ghostly arrows flew directly past the man’s head, his footing was lost once again as he continued to try to back away from Niven. Tumbling over onto his derrière, the first thing to go was a few of the map cases. Each one was held in a hardened leather tube approximately a foot in length and two inches in diameter with a different colored cap upon each as a means of quickly identifying what was inside each map case. The medallion itself was lost; arcing through the air and narrowly managing to miss Niven’s head as it sailed past her.

“No! Nononono! My work! You cannot have this infidels!” The man cried out after a whimpering groan from having quite probably obtained a bruised arse for his fuss. Scrambling about him, rather than working to retrieve the map cases or the medallion, he instead went for rocks. Quickly picking up a handful, he began yet another torrent of mostly incoherent nasally obscenities as he started to hurl small stones towards Niven and Jireal’eri.

The man seemed to be more afraid of them than of the ghostly battle and he got even more agitated when Niven started to speak to him. He shouted foul things at her, and her brow furrowed in confusion before her features took on a look of annoyance. Couldn't he see they were trying to help?

The man fell over and a few of his maps fell and the medallion he had in his hand narrowly missed Niven's head and she ducked as she saw it coming towards her. She looked where it landed and then back at the man.

He was now gathering rocks and throwing them at her. Niven held up her arm to shield her face from the oncoming projectiles and shouted, "Hey!" in protest. Niven was patient, but, being an elf, it was wearing thin. This man was determined to believe that they were evil and Niven was more than ready to leave him to his fate, whatever that may be.

In a last attempt at peace, Niven moved about the area, and finally found the medallion, being pelted by stones the entire time. She held it up for him to see and then laid it on a large rock a few feet away from where the cartographer had fallen. Retreating, Niven walked back towards Trigg and Jirael.

Please, let us help you...” he said, shielding himself from the rocks that were being thrown at the two of them... “We come from the Church in Diana, I worked with Lady Sarista, I am on assignment from the Prince” he said, pulling out the signet ring that he wore around his neck, hoping that the frightened man might recognize Aerianne's emblem... though she was the Previous Archprelate, it still might have done something to ease his panic.
