[Location-Arconis] The Kalendryan Observatory Supra Montem
The Kalendryan Observatory Supra Montem
The ancient society of Kalendryas had long been famous for the tall spires which they had built in many of the largest cities across the Aelyrian Empire, but they were only a relatively recent arrival in Arconis. When they did come, however, they did not stint in expense. Soon a new Observatory, nicknamed "Supra Montem", or "above the mountain", to distinguish it from the other observatories in Aelyria, raised its massive dome near the top of the mountain just north of the city. From there the small number of Kalendryans who inhabited it could watch the stars in peace and tranquility, without the glare of the city lights, and in the safe knowledge that the Supra Montem Observatory was one of the highest above sea-level.
The Observatory was only about two miles from the city gates, but the path which led up to it was very steep indeed. There was a longer and wider path, but it ran all the way around the back of the mountain. The Kalendryans used it to transport the mundane goods and food which they needed to survive.
The tower itself was simply built, but impressive nonetheless. Crafted out of Arconian marble, it was topped by a reflective domed roof of steel that could be seen, on a sunny brightening, all the way down from the Enamorian plains. Right below the dome ran a ring of windows that could be opened by a Kalendryan wishing to stick his telescope out and watch the heavens.
A tight guard was kept on the front door, which always stayed locked. The Kalendryans Supra Montem were a reclusive bunch, even for a Kalendryan Orbit, and one didn't often see them in the city streets. Only on occasion would one of them come down, either to buy supplies or to interpret a sky chart for a newborn. Still, they had come to their own understanding with the city populace, who looked up to the Kalendryans with a sense of profound awe. The Kalendryans also appeared to have particular ties with the Templum Manus Dextri, perhaps because both were considered heretical by the Dianite Church of the Faith.
A knock on the door of the Observatory generally summoned the Novice Olliane Remsdotter, a true vagaran woman with straw-colored hair and small, bright blue eyes. "Serale? How can I help you?" she would ask in a soft voice, squinting a bit through a large pair of glasses.
