[Daltina] Discover the Diamond Inside

Era XXVI, Winter

The tent had been set up some time ago, some distance from the city gates proper. The alchemist preferred to stay on the outskirts of the city, where he was not easily disturbed and people might just have to make an effort to reach him. There was, of course, relative safety in staying inside the walls, but the reputation of being an alchemist would see to that.

The tent itself was red a sharp contrast to the white snow around it. A small sign outside marked it as L'épée et la cornue the Ouroboros beneath the title made it evident that an alchemist had set up shop here. Behind the tent a couple of donkeys were tied up to a pole, idly eating whatever they could of the nearby hay.

Lifting the tent flap and going inside revealed a room lit by a pleasant yellow light suspended from the ceiling. No fires in here, the light emanated from a glowing fluid trapped in a flask. More of them on a small table served to light the room up pleasantly, each one a different colour. There was an assortment of items set up around the room, some captured in fancy bottles seemed to be perfumes of various scents. There were potions in small tubes along the wall. None of them were marked, asking the proprietor was the only way of finding out what each contained. There were even a couple of small barrels, one filled with some kind of grey powder and the other filled with white powder.

One shelf seemed to hold a series of fine plum brandies, each of them labelled Aquinas' Dreamless Brandy, the way they fitted into the shelf suggested they had been custom built for each other.

A pair of very ordinary looking boots seemed to have earned pride of place, sitting neatly on top of a table in the middle of the tent. Next to them was the owner, a grave looking man with a scruff of red hair, his pale skin made him seem mainly Vagaran descent, a surprising contrast to the Charismean sign outside. He was dressed in a fine, red shirt with a golden ouroboros embroidered on the chest, the high collar and the gloves meant that every inch of him save his head was very carefully covered.

Secrets :
Open for business, steel or above, but trades welcome!

It was somewhat tentative, the lifting of the tent flap, as though he wasn’t at all sure that he was committed to entering the red tent. Since he had come to the city the red tent in stark contrast to its surroundings, had tempted his curiosity. Yet, Cal’ed’non knew what could happen when one submitted to that temptation. Was his existence not proof enough, how disastrous temptation could be? So he stood strong against lurking enticement, until now.

Now, as he stood hesitantly in the tent’s entrance, his employer’s instructions played in his memory. ‘Go check it out for me. See if it would be of benefit to me to build a relationship.’

Cal’ed’non did not know what type of benefits his employer meant, and he didn’t want to ask. Ignorance is bliss. What he didn’t know, would allow him to sleep at night. He had learned that the hard way. For years he wanted to meet the ‘great Calanon’, his father. Years he heard of this wonderous Elf, and of his charm and charisma, so that of course he wanted to meet him. But since having met him, Cal’ed’non’s life had become a steaming pile of excrement.

His mother abandoned and then killed by the fog, and did his great father care? Did he even attempt to show a purely public expression that he cared by sending word? No. He could easily imagine the ‘Great Calanon’ was dancing a jig, that he was no longer saddled with his mother or himself.

Sure he could have presented himself to Calanon and demanded a rightful place as his son, in the hierarchy of the house of Siluvanade, but to what end? Being reminded everyday how unwanted he was? No thank you. He would muddle through on his own.

Cal’ed’non shook himself out of his reverie of dark memories and boldly stepped inside. He had a job to do. He let the tent flap fall back into place, as he silently and carefully studied the goods on offer in the tent.

Instead of a torch or lantern, the tent was lit by what appeared to be some kind of unwavering yellow light that gave everything a slightly golden tint. The only flame present in here seemed to be in a central stove that made the tent seem swelteringly hot. A lizard seemed to skulk around the heat of the central stove, peering out at the elf with large eyes, licking them carefully before scuttling off to hide behind another piece of merchandise.

A man with a disapproving face looked up from his book as Cal'ed'non entered, but seemed otherwise to take little notice of the elf. Despite the heat and the clothes that seemed to cover every inch of his body, he seemed not to sweat even a little. A gloved hand turned a page with slow ease, if Cal'ed'non had been expecting a friendly clerk offering to show him all that was here, he had clearly stumbled into the wrong tent.

The goods on offer seemed many and strange, vials containing all manner of strange fluids and powders. The tent was awash in strong scents, not all of them pleasant, but definitely out of place and strange. One thing was quickly becoming evident though, there was a lot on display here, but without some guidance Cal'ed'non could only guess at the majority of what was being kept here.

Calednon is unknown and forgotten
The first thing Cal’ed’non thought, as his eyes adjusted to the lighting, was how out of his depth he was. There were a myriad of items that he had never seen before, much less know what their purpose was. His employer wanted to know whether it was worthy of relationship building, as he stood there, just inside the tent, he would say yes. The varied selection of ingredients on display were more than he had seen in another establishment in the city. Far more. Granted he hadn't been to every merchant in the, but he had been to most of the known arcane dealers, and this selection was huge in comparison. Knowing his employer’s affinity for things with magical properties, he would definitely want to forge a relationship here. He could almost imagine his employer salivating at the quantity this tent held.

But where to start? His senses were in overload. The heat of the tent, coupled with the different wafting aromas made it hard to concentrate. Movement by the stove caught his gaze. Unconsciously Cal’ed’non smiled. The lizard quickly slithered off, but that small innocuous event, helped him relax. Animals were far easier to read, than people were, in his opinion. Animals, in his experience, only stayed with those they felt safe with, unless they were tied or caged. Thus someone who did not mind a lizard being at home in the tent, and the lizard lounging about, told him, the proprietor was probably a well meaning jovial sort.

The smile on his face died however, as the jovial and welcoming expression he expected from the proprietor was instead, a dour and frowning glare, before it was returned to his book. It appeared that the proprietor was annoyed at Cal’ed’non’s intrusion into the tent. He took another step further in. It wasn't a poised and self assured step. No, it was halting and yet oddly determined step. He had a task to do, and he needed to be able to report back with details. He opened his mouth to speak, then closed it again. He needed to think about what he wanted to say. It needed to be brief, but to the point. He didn’t want the man to feel his time was being wasted.

Turning his steps he moved to the display of vials. The wide variety of shapes, colors and sizes of the vials, while at first, pleasing to the eye, displeased Cal’ed’non on a subconscious level. The bottles and vials were unlabeled so there was no visual sense of order. He longed to reach forward and rearrange the bottles by likeness. Uncomfortably, he moved on to another display. Again, his sense of order was assaulted, but this time it was coupled with a rather untenable odor. Stalwartly he moved on to the next display.

It was no good. He had no idea what he was looking at, and he did not know how to broach the subject without breaking his employer’s confidence. Then suddenly inspiration struck. He canted his head slightly to the side and lifted an eyebrow as he silently judged the merit of his plan. Yes. That -could- work. It wasn’t a lie. He was always looking to better his position. A single nod, and his plan in place, he turned and strode purposely toward the proprietor. He stared at the design on the male’s tunic, before turning to look at his unwelcoming face. “I am looking for employment. Would you be in need of such help?”

The alchemist reached over, took a bookmark and placed it delicately between the pages of the book he had been reading. It would have been nice to say that he smiled up at the elf, but it would have been a lie. The alchemist's face remained stoically impassive, a frozen mask of disgruntlement.

"I might be," he put the book away. "Who are you and what are your skills?" There was a slight charismean accent to the way he spoke, just enough that it was only barely noticeable.

“I am the only remaining son of the House of Enrithtel.” Yes his mother’s family. Never would he claim the House of Siluvanade.

“I am young. So I am not highly skilled. I am not skilled much at all, in honesty. But I can detect when magic is present. It is more self taught, than formal instruction.” He paused, deciding he did want this opportunity.

Cal'ed'non straightened his shoulders, “I intend to further that ability and learn more as I am able. But that will require instruction, practical experience and help. Something I am unable to pursue at present due to lack of funds. I will be reliable, loyal and discreet, as well as a hard worker.”

"Ah, yes, another last son of a dead house," the alchemist looked the elf up and down. "They are distressingly common among your kind. My apologies for your loss." His condolences carried all the warmth of the summer outside. "I am Adrian de Aquinas, the alchemist of swords, professor at the Socrates Ambergois Institute of Research, and president of the CMN."

"I say this so you know I am a with many connections, I could certainly provide funds and letters of introduction. I am not in particular need of any kind of personal servant though, what I am in need of are hunters, people who can find things for me I cannot find on my own."

He did not say why but the alchemist looked frail, skeletally thin and like a flight of stairs might wear him out. The cane that rested against the nearby desk did little to dissuade this opinion.

"If you are capable of acting in this regard, I would certainly see to it that you are to be rewarded handsomely for your services."

Cal’ed’non opened his mouth. Then closed it again. ‘Another last son’ Aquinas had said. Yes. He wasn’t the only Elf that had suffered hardship. It was how he dealt with said hardship that proved his mettle. He wasn’t going to be one to ride on pity for his breaks. He fought against falling prey to self-pity, even though, when he doesn't realize it, he still seems to find himself reflecting on it. He looked at the man, and nodded gratefully at his words of condolence. He was grateful. Not for the sympathy, so much as the reminder that, he was only one of many in that same position. A reminder that living in the past would gain him nothing.

“Thank you, Sir.” Bringing himself back to the matter at present. He couldn’t help but look a bit eager. The man was not averse to hiring him. Hunters he wanted. Cal’ed’non looked about the room, hunters for procurements for special items, no doubt. He noted the cane, and the male’s frail appearance. Plus, to operate a mercantile such as this, one did need inventory. It was clear that Aquinas could not be hunting items, if he was here selling. It made sense others collected the items for him. If he collected items for Aquinas, he was not breaching his promise to his employer. No. In fact, he could honestly say, he was researching the situation. A win-win proposition.

His eyes slid over the wondrous assortment of bottles and vials, imaging the day he would have the ability to tell what each was, by a mere glance. How could he turn this golden opportunity down? Simple. He could not.

“Good Sir Aquinas, it will be my honor, to procure items for you. Cal’ed’non Enrithtel at your service, Sir!”

Winter XXVI

how does one introduce oneself the best way to secure work at the best price? That was the predicament Argon found himself in as he approached the establishment looking for work. He could survive well enough on caravan runs but he did look for other work when he could. Things to expand his interest and what might be in order here easily met Argon's needs.

He knew he wouldn't ordinarily be able to afford to shop in such a place but perhaps he could earn something or learn something in the process of his work. He certainly wasn't expecting to be tutored but whatever it is this Alchemist was after would be interesting in itself. Argon held the profession in high esteem. Many a dwarf had been able to accomplish great feats with the go of an Alchemist backing them. Perhaps he could do the same?

"Serale" Argon said trying his best to keep his accent under control "Fine wares you have here. However I have heard that you might need a hand? What kind of job is It? Procurement? Escort?"

Argon was wearing clothing that marked him out as a weathered traveller. Though his gear marked out his wealth it showed that he had experience out in the wilderness and perhaps lacked experience in social graces instead.

Another peculiar feature was a lopsided brawny arm that seemed to be out of kilter to the other arm and very brawny even for that of a typical dwarf. His face was also a mask of toughness. Not be deliberate design he was actually trying to appear friendly yet professional but since he had spent a lot of time in the wilderness his smile came off a little flat and made him appear more 'let's get down to business' than anything else.

He had also failed to dress down while inside. Still wearing full winter clothes Argon would no doubt become aware of this momentarily as he would become too hot.

[top]Cal'ed'non

"Good," the alchemist, he produced a small sheaf of paper from a nearby barrel and spent a little time writing. He sanded it to dry the ink, brushed the remnants off, folded the paper in half and handed it to the elf.

Secrets :

Heads:
Night Drake
Dire Lynx
Basilisk
Nightraven

Entire body:
Shadowstray
Naiad
Great Salamander
Firestalker

Sundry:
Alicorn horn
Cloak of a Swan Maiden

"Try finding one of these items for me," the alchemist said. "I wrote my address in Jaedaxia on the back should I have left by the time you complete your assignment."

[top]Argon

The alchemist at the centre of the tent looked down at the elf. He carefully put away the book he had been reading when the dwarf entered. Unlike the dwarf the alchemist looked more suited to city living than anything else, the clothes were of a good quality cut and material, suggesting some wealth. A red shirt, with a black jacket over it, embroidered with the golden ouroboros to show his profession.

"Good evening," he said, "I have not put out any specific word, but I am always in need of a good procurer if such work interests you."

Argon wonders who had been spreading rumours about the procurement job in the circumstances where the proprietor hadn't said a word? No matter, there was a job afterall and thatsa all that matters

"Aye" Argon said with a hint of enthusiasm behind a hoarse voice in response to the finely dressed alchemist "that work suits. What do you need obtained?"

Argon intended to wait before haggling price on this job. In any case curiousity outbid his mercantilism. what the Alchemist was after was more important to Argon than how much he would be offered to be paid.

As he conversed Argon casually looked about the room in any lulls and took interest in the various alchemical products out on display. The glowing light from a fluid trapped in a flask caught his interest and he casually wondered if a solid material could be made to glow instead. His faced showed an interest in the material if the alchemist caught his expression before Argon fully placed his attention on the alchemist once more.

Cal’ed’non gave Sir Aquinas a nod and a smile, as he took the proffered paper from. He gave it a quick look, and the smile went from an easy smile to a more forced smile. The smile completely faded as he gave the list a more thorough read. He wasn't a hunter. He had no idea how to find, much less catch half of these items. And a drake, a basilisk,.. Even if he were able to find them, he did not have the capability to take them on single handedly.

Overhearing Aquinas, Cal’ed’non looked toward the Dwarf, and took a half step toward him. “Perhaps we could work together on this..?” He looked from the Dwarf to Aquinas. “Two are better than one..” He had an hopeful look on his face.

Argon hadn't even registered the elf for all the wondrous potions and alchemical trinkets on display and was slightly taken back when Calednon spoke

"Well met!"Argon said taking the sight of the elf in "Well a joint venture would mean we would have a better chance. If the proprietor would like to set the terms..."

He let the sentence hang before continuing

"but it wouldn't do if we aren't properly introduced" Argon said putting aside any hint of prejudice his family and culture put into him regarding elves "Name's Argon, by what shall I know you?"

A myriad of other questions came to mind. What did Calednon know of the foe they were to face? He hadn't a chance to listen into the prior conversation before he had entered the tent so he hadn't heard about the basilisk or the drake, not that it mattered. Filled with confidence of his ability to overcome any means of beast to obtain what the alchemist was after, he was sure that he.... they would triumph.
