[Port Alyxandrya] - A disturbance of the balance - Niven Soleil

The city. He hated the city. He hated how nothing would be done to stop the progression of the city into the natural beauty of the area beyond. The inhabitants were all sitting in their smug little houses, and huts, wasting resources, creating waste, and destruction, and not caring that their wanton ways were damaging the nature around the countryside. He knew he had to do something, his instincts told him that it was the right thing to do, he just needed to do it right, or the plan would fail...
*******************************
The rumours started by word of mouth by bards, barkeeper, and citizens a like, going between the inns, and taverns around the city. The rumours were all about animals, losing their usual passive state, and attacking their owners, or others. There were rumours that some birds were attacking anyone that would venture too far from the city gates. There were rumours that barriers of twisted bushes of thorns, and plants that had thorny stems, or were known to be poisonous to those that would venture too close, had formed where once there were none. There were also rumours of some farm crops failing, forming into rotting masses of stagnated, mould covered, fungus, on the ground.

All these rumours were based around happenings at the edge of the city, and spread quickly through the city.
*******************************

The druid walked her way through the crowded street. She was dressed in dark green, with a dark green hooded cloak, the hood loose at her back, the cloak clasped with a wooden pin at her neck. She was looking for a certain one, one who like her knew the ways of nature, one that like her, was still young in terms of the use of the arcana from the nature plane. The elder had told her to look for this other, in the city, for she would be there. An elfess who she would need to ask for assistance. She'd been given the address where this other would be found, so she approached the residence. She stopped and looked around at the area, and surroundings. Had she come to the right place? The address pointed to this residence, so... She knocked on the door, and waited for someone to answer.

"Serale. I am here to talk with Niven Soleil."

TS: Summer Era XXV FP

Gently, Niven unlatched her child from her as their sleeping form was no longer drinking. The little mouth was still slightly open and the elfess could see the babe's tongue still working as it nursed in its dreams.

Tucking herself away again inside her blue dress with one hand, she slowly raised herself up from the rocking chair she sat in, careful not to disturb the slumber of the now sleeping babe. Moving to the crib it shared with it's sibling who was also sleeping peacefully, she held the baby close to her while ever so slowly lowering the top half of her body down to lay it down for his nap. Once it was safely laying on the mattress, she carefully extracted her arms. The baby stirred and Niven froze, holding her breath. No no, it was just getting comfortable. She exhaled, relieved to have successfully gotten both babies down with minimal muss and fuss.

Knowing she now had a couple of candlemarks before one or both of them demanded her attention again, Niven looked around at the room as she did up the front of her blue dress. It was always remarkable to her how much mess two tiny elves could create. There were blankets and toys and burping clothes and always tons of laundry. The elfess was certain she had never done this much washing in such a short period of time in her entire life. And it wasn’t even just her! Calanon and Kailin were both pitching in as well and Niven knew without them, she might not have survived.

Flipping a receiving blanket over her shoulder from the arm of the chair, Niven set about trying to straighten up around the house. Gathering the laundry that was in the room she shared with her children, Niven took it all out and moved to a corner of the kitchen. She then went back to the room and closed the door, leaving it only open a crack so that she could hear if either of the twins woke up. Then she tackled the toys and gathered them into a pile in the corner of the sitting room.

She was just gathering the spit up soiled blankets when there was a knock at the door. Juno, her dog, barked at the sound Niven’s head snapped up and shushed her dog as she moved quickly yet soundlessly to the front door, peaking quickly into her room to ensure the sound had not disturbed the babies slumber before opening it.

What a sight she must have been for the female who stood on the doorstep! It was evident that the elfess had dressed hastily in the morning. Her long cornsilk blonde hair had not been brushed before it had been hastily plated into a queue that laid over the opposite shoulder the green flannelette blanket rested on and wisps of hair framed the elfess’ face. There was cornstarch across her forehead where Niven had used her hand to wipe away one of the wisps of hair while changing her daughter. At least her dress was clean, though it was a little rumpled. There was a faint scent of curdled milk coming from the laundry she held in her arm. Juno stood next to his mistress' skirts looking at the stranger, ready to pounce if the person at the door intended any harm to his misstress or her offspring.

Confusion formed on the features of Niven’s face as the woman on the step stated that she had come to see her. As her emerald gaze passed over the visitor, Niven realized she’d never laid eyes on this woman before in her life and couldn’t even begin to imagine how she knew her. “Perhaps an employee of Kailin’s come to deliver a message?” she thought. But she didn’t look like anyone Niven had seen at the shipping headquarters. No, she looked more like a traveller of some kind.

It took the elfess a moment to realize she was just standing there stupidly, looking at the woman. “I am Niven Soleil,” she said, her confusion evident in her tone. “Is there something I can do to help you?"

The young elfess looked a little flustered at first but then on finding the person she had been told to find, her demeanour changed to being calmer.

” My name is Loramoria, and I have been sent to speak with you about some troubles in the area not to distant from here. I have been sent by one of the Druid elders as he has been watching over you, and he has said that it time for you to start your journey.

Can I come in so that we may discuss matters?

oocI will respond quickly to this one as we can begin the investigations etc.

So many questions ran through Niven’s mind at the words that fell from the elfess’ lips. The Sylrosian’s confusion was now only compounded. The druid elders? They’ve been watching me? What on telath does that mean?

After a few moments, Niven returned to the present and realized the young elfess had asked to come inside. “Oh! Yes, yes of course. Come in,” she replied quickly, opening the door wider and stepping aside so the girl could enter.

Closing the door behind her once she’d stepped in, Niven became keenly aware of the laundry that was in her hand. “Um, I will be right back. Please make yourself comfortable in the sitting room,” she said. Niven led them into the freshly tidied sitting room (a thing that the elfess was immensely grateful for having just done) and then smiled before disappearing into the kitchens.

Dumping the laundry on the ground with the rest of it, Niven looked around quickly. Hostess. Hadn’t done this in a while. Ok. Tea. The sylrosian flew about the room putting water on for tea, getting out the tea leaves, teapot and teacups. She put together a respectable tray before returning to the sitting room.

“I’ve just put on some water for tea. It should be ready soon,”
she informed her guest, gracefully seating herself in one of the chairs. Slender porcelain hands smoothed out her dress over her knees before coming to rest on her lap, her fingers laced together.

She considered at the elven woman for a moment before speaking again. “I’m sorry, you said that there is a group of Druid elders that have been watching over me? How did they even know of me and I not know of them? What journey is it that I am expected to start? If they have truly been watching then surely they know that I have recently had my babies who are no more than a few months old. I can hardly just up and leave."

Loramoria stepped inside and moved into the sitting room, finding a seat as directed. There were a few moments as she watched Niven, where she kept herself quiet to allow her host to put togrther a few things, and get a brew of leaves on the go. Then came the questions that she knew would be coming.

”The elders of the grove have been watching many these past few eras. That is how they found and taught me. They have those attuned to nature under observation, non-intrusive watching to see how things progress. Sister you have been unbound to the nature plane for a while and yet you grow, slowly, but they see. They know your current situation, and have made provision for this. Do not worry about your children as they will be well cared for, and you will able to return here whenever you feel the need, but there are things in the nature realm that are disturbing the balance.

If you have not felt this, surely you might have heard the rumours of things not usual, happening towards the edge of the city. There have been incidents of animals, birds, plants attacking those that want to make, what they call progress, but by encroachment into the natural surroundings. These happenings have been increasing each brightening a new incident to be aware of, a new spell being released, and directed against those that would hurt nature itself.

Now, the Elders have asked that I approach and ask you to join us in putting right the wrongs that are occurring. You’re just starting the journey to becoming a druidess of renown.

I can explain more to put you’re mind at ease for your children will be looked after by a nursemaid of the grove. They will be kept calm, and if needs must you return to feed them as you wish, but there will be no need to rush as their other body needs will be looked after.

Now I think that your brew of leaves will be ready? All this talking makes the throat a little dry. Do you have any other questions, or issues you wish to raise?”

Niven’s brow furrowed in confusion as her guest spoke. They had made provision for child care? How in Aeternia....? She was expected to simply leave her children in the care of strangers who creepily watched her? They couldn’t be serious! These were tiny pieces of her heart!! Gods only knew who these people were!! “You cannot expect me to just leave my children in the care of complete strangers. I’m fairly certain that even if I didn’t object, their father certainly would!” Niven could see the look on Calanon’s face in her mind’s eye. He would be livid. “Thank the gods he isn’t here to hear this,” she thought. Perhaps it was for the best that he was away for a little while.

The Sylrosian nodded when the elfess spoke of the disturbance in the balance. She’d felt something had shifted in the essence around her, but she couldn’t put her finger on what exactly. Niven had simply chalked it up to fatigue messing with her senses, but it would seem that was not so. She’d heard the rumours even having hardly left the house. When the babies were sleeping, so was she. And when they were awake, they took most of her energy. Only a couple of times had she been able to slip away for a few candlemarks alone, but Calanon, when he was home, and Kailin brought news of the outside world to her and this had been mentioned a time or two. Niven had thought it strange at the time but had been too exhausted to think much about it later on.

“The elders want me? But I am nobody!” Niven said, clearly surprised. “Surely my skills are still too new to possibly be of any use!” It wasn’t at all the Niven didn’t want to help, more that she was convinced there was little she could do. She was certain that the elders wanted someone with more advanced skills to tackle whatever was out there. She’d been hardly useful to the group in Moonstone that was restoring the lands destroyed by the fog. And a druidess of renown? Could the elders see into the future or did they just mean to butter her up?

The initiate druidess looked thoughtful as the childcare arrangements were being further explained to her. Perhaps the idea wasn’t so crazy after all. She would see her children fairly regularly as they needed to be fed regularly. And she did only have three spells in a brightening. It might be nice to get out of the house and be useful to someone other than just her children….

The tea! Right! Niven snapped back to the present and jumped to her feet, moving swiftly to the kitchen. Getting the water off the fire. Niven poured it carefully into the teapot. The tea leaves immediately started to turn the water a brownish colour that would only deepen the longer they steeped.

Carefully, she carried the tray into the sitting room and sat it on the table in front of Loramoria. She picked up the teapot and poured the tea into the two cups, her hand on the lid to ensure it didn’t fall off as she poured. Setting the teapot down again, Niven picked up her cup and saucer and returned to her seat.

Juno looked up at her expectantly. Did she have any further questions?

“How long do the elders expect this to take? Brightenings? Cycles? Am I to continue living here or go elsewhere with you?”
The thought of camping again appealed to the elfess, but she’d never done it with two babies before and wasn’t especially eager to try it.

Loramoria smiled as the teacup was presented to her. She had listened to the questions that had been given, and after the first sip of the tea, she proceeded in answering.

”I am no Elder so I do not know all the ways of those that rule our glade, but that being said I do know that we are only a few, and our higher status members are all already attending to the issues that have beset the outskirts of the city.

In real terms they want this all to be cleared up in Two or three brightenings, but it may take a little longer, depending on any situations that we have not been able to predict. In terms of living here, then yes you can as the area we will be needing to patrol, and help revert to normal is on the edge of the city, but a couple of candlemarks st most. That being said if you do feel you want to head into the outskirts, and further afield, then there is work to be done and you could look to sleep under the stars. But that choice would be yours to make.

This is very good tea by the way.
Loramoria took another sip and waited for Niven to process the additional information, before continuing.

So, do are you willing to help? I can leave and return in a few Candlemarks if this will give you the time you need to come to a decision.

It seemed that there was little more to be said. Her questions were all answered satisfactorily. Niven thoughtfully drank her tea as she considered what was being laid out before her. Her emerald eyes slipped to the door behind which her children slept. She should be sleeping herself, but this was also important. She was needed elsewhere as well and she desperately wanted to feel useful to more than just her family. In truth, Niven was starting to go stir crazy with her life only revolving around her children. She was an adventurer and while she loved her family, she also loved the thrill of adrenaline running through her veins. And it had been far too long since that had happened. Now, by the sounds of it, these Elders had done everything in their power to make it possible for her to do something useful to the outside world once again. And she couldn’t pass it up, no matter how fatigued she felt.

The porcelain teacup made a soft ‘clink’ as Niven returned it to the saucer and placed them on the coffee table. Leaning forward on her elbows, the elfess clasped her hands together. She didn't need candlemarks to make this decision. She knew what she wanted to do. Calanon would just have to understand, as she knew Kailin likely already would.

“Alright. I am willing to do what is needed to aid the Elders efforts."

Loramoria dipped her tea whilst waiting for the decision. It was obvious that there was a small conflict going on inside of her host as the various permutations were thought through. In the end though a decision was taken.

”Great. I will return to the glade to give them your answer, and then on the morrow we can begin, as I’m sure you have some preperations to put into place. The baby sitter will need to be informed of her duties as well, All will be made ready so that we will have the candlemarks needed to try to revert some of the issues that have occurred. Between the two of us we should be able to clear up most of this mess.

Have you any questions that I can answer before I leave?

Loramoria sat waiting for any questions that may still be needing to be cleared up before she returned to give the elders her answer. If there were none then the tea would be finished, for it was a good brew of the leaves, and then she would leave to sort everything out.

oocIf Niven does have questions I can answer. Sorry it’s a bit of a wasted posting, but the next ones will get Niven into the mixup of the situation. Next post will lead to the fun beginning in earnest:-)

“On the morrow,” Niven repeated looking a little uncertain. “That soon. Ok, I can make that work…” In her head she started running through all the provisions she would need to make and things she would need to do get herself and her children ready for being out of doors.

When asked if she had any further questions, Niven had a million, but she shook her head. No, the questions she had would not be able to be answered by Loramoria. Forcing a smile she took the elfess’ teacup when she had finished and set it on the tray to show her out.

Once the door was closed, Niven fell against it. Leaning her head back and closing her eyes, the druidess sighed heavily and wondered what exactly she had gotten herself into. Could she handle this? Motherhood and working? She wasn’t sure she had the motherhood of two babies down quite yet. The twins were still quite dependant on her and she could not leave them for long. If the emotional aspect wasn’t enough, there was a strong physical one as well. Niven could only go so long before she got sore and needed to feed them. It would be a balancing act, figuring out how long she could push it before she needed to get back to them to relieve herself as well as fill their bellies. And they couldn’t be too far, but they couldn’t be too close depending on how dangerous things were.

“I can do this,” she told herself, reaching down inside for her gumption. “I’m not sure how, but I can do this!”

Niven spent the rest of the brightening getting herself and the twins ready to go, so when whoever came to get her in the morning, she would be organized. There were bags of diapers, favourite cosies, changes of clothes and anything else she thought the children might need. “And don’t think you won’t be there too, being my eyes,” she said to Juno as she made her preparations.

The next brightening, she was ready soon after Rosyun. Kailin had already left for work, so it was just her and the babies who had just finished eating. Niven was on the ground playing with them, making them giggle and laugh while she waited. Juno lay next to the trio keeping a watchful eye.

Loramoria arrived at the door, knocking against the rigid structure, producing a resounding ‘knock, knock’. She waited for the answer hoping that the young elders had not changed her mind for the task that lay ahead of them was not an easy one to say the least, but it was certainly manageable for a Druid of novice level to be able to assist.

Loramoria was dressed in the same cloak as the previous brightening, but this time she wore more casual, working clothes underneath, as the task could get interesting. She hoped that her new colleague would not be wearing anything too crazy, but she could wait for her to change if it was necessary. Anyway, she waited and would appraise the dressing situation as Niven would present herself on opening the door.

Juno woofed from his place on the floor. One of the babies heard the sound and giggled, reaching for the canine. Niven smiled and pushed herself up off the floor. She opened the door to find Loramoria on the other side.

“Vedui, arwen en amin,” she said, stepping back so the woman could enter.

Niven, not knowing what the brightening might throw at her or what the situation on the outskirts of town was, the novice druidess had chosen to forgo a dress and had instead opted for dark green trousers and a white chemise with brown leather boots and vest. Her jewelled dagger sat on her hip attached to a belt. It allowed her freedom of movement with whatever was to come.

Closing the door behind Loramoria, Niven moved back into the sitting room where her babies were laying on the floor. One of them had their foot in their mouth and looked up at the new arrival shyly. The other was still busy reaching for the doggie.

Scooping up the one reaching for the dog, Niven snuggled the baby close and giggled at it. “These are my children. I have packed everything I can imagine they will need for the brightening, but I will need help bringing both of them to wherever we are going.”

Loramoria smiled as the new mother snuggled her baby. Love and affection were a big part of life, and as a Druid were also part of a person’s inner strength. She looked down at the other babe, and stopped to pick it up, holding it within practiced arms, cradling the babes head and clutching it to her body to make sure it knew that it was going to be safe.

”Serale young one. I am Loramoria. You will be safe with me. Your mother is here so feet not little one. Whether it was her soothing voice, or the way that this druidess swayed a little whilst speaking, comforting the baby as she moved, it was hard to tell, but the baby seemed to accept that someone else was holding it, but was not going to harm them.

With Babes in arms the pair headed out towards the edge of the city. Just a couple of streets from the city gates, based on a patch of ground that was kept to be as natural as it could be, was a little cottage. The pathway to the door was paved with flat slate, cut irregular shapes, placed so that the moss could look to fill the gaps. The gate was part of a trellis system that were covered with ivy, and vine like plants that had flowers of whit and purple petals. There was a sweet scent from the many blooms that were on display from the flowers plated and growing beside the pathway. All in all, it was a little piece of natural beauty in a busy city. As the pair approached, the door opened to reveal a small, old, but pretty women, dressed in a Light blue dress, with an apron over the top. She had light blue eyes, blond, but turning grey hair, which she wore in a ponytail. She welcomed Loramoria with a kiss on the cheek.

Serale Loramoria, I trust you are well. And what do we have here?. The lady looked at the baby, in Loramoria’s arms and then towards Niven,

”Serale my dear, you must be Niven. I am Tilda. I will be looking after your little ones whilst you go put Telath to rights. Now please, do come in, and we can settle the babes, and you can make sure you’re happy before you leave. Come in, come in.

Tilda moved aside so that Loramoria, and Niven could get through the door. The main room was not small, but it was the main room of the cottage, and it held a little kitchrn area, a nice fireplace, where a tabby cat lay curled up, lying on a sheepskin rug. There were a couple of comfy looking chairs, and a two seat settee, all with knitted throws on them. Tilda motioned for them to sit.

”Now then dear, addressing Niven, ” I’m sure you may have some questions, I know I would, so please, feel free to speak up. Would you like some tea?

Grabbing the bag of supplies for the babies on her way out, Niven closed the door behind Juno and locked it. If Kailin got home before she did, she would no doubt be surprised. Which would just lead to a conversation that Niven had been actively avoiding.

Niven kept a close eye on Loramoira. She seemed to be quite comfortable holding the baby, but Niven was still concerned when anyone aside from Cal or Kailin went any distance with one. Juno seemed concerned too and instead of walking at Niven’s heel, he instead walked at Loramoria’s, constantly glancing up at the baby in the elfess’ arms.

The cottage near the gates was quaint and beautiful. Niven wondered how she had never heard of, nor noticed this cottage before. Granted, she had come by sea and therefore had never had the need to be at this side of the port city. She had stayed mostly in Nest or in the Crown District or down at the docks.

When they got near and the door opened, Niven was pleasantly surprised to find that she liked the look of the nanny they had gotten for the twins. She looked neat and tidy and responsible. “Point in their favour,” the elfess thought to herself, though she still hugged her baby closer.

“It’s a pleasure, Tilda,” the elfess replied to the gracious welcome of the host.

The house was clean and homey, a fact that went miles when it came to Niven’s comfort. Her only concern was the cat. Niven didn’t like cats, feeling they were devious, their eyes were shifty, and there were not to be trusted. She wasn’t sure how Juno would do with the cat either, for she was not leaving her children anywhere without her dog to protect them.

Keeping a wary eye on the cat, Niven sat in of the chairs, setting the bag for the babies beside her and her baby on her knees. She smiled and cooed at it before looking up at the offer of tea.

“Tea would be lovely,” she said, smiling, before turning her attention back to the baby. She tickled its stomach, making it giggle happily. The babe in Loramoria’s eyes fussed and Niven turned her gaze to her other child.

“Sounds like a hungry cry. It’s good timing too if I feed them now, we have a good number of candlemarks before they need to be fed again,” she told the elfess.

Niven picked up the baby on her lap and tucked it in one arm, reaching with the other for the one in Loramoria’s arms. Once the exchange was made, she sat back down, pulled a blanket out of the bag beside her, and threw a corner over her shoulder over top of the baby in her arms. Covered, she proceeded to do what was needed to start feeding her baby.

“I do have some questions, yes,” she said, looking back up at Tilda. “How long have you been watching children for? Have you had any of your own?”

Her eyes went back to the cat. “It won’t be a problem that I leave my dog here with the twins, will it? They adore him and he is a big help when they need comfort."

Tilda smiled as Niven asked her questions. The cats tail twitched, but it was just sleeping. Tilda made the tea from the water that had been boiling awaybby the fireplace. As she made the he tea she answered the questions

”Well, I’m a mother and a grandmother. My boys have already grown up and have married two young ladies that have given me three grand children to look after. So I’m well versed in childcare. There is no need to worry about the cat he’s as much trouble as a stuffed doorstop. If anything he’ll just up and leave and the dog can do his duty to help look after your little ones. “

Tilda after allowing the leaves to steep for a few minutes, handed the teas to Niven and Loramoria, before sitting down in one of the comfy seats.

”So, do you have any other questions?
