[District Of Maeve] Gallantly Gallivanting

Era XXV - Winter - Ponutis

The suns seemed to be traveling slower than usual. Moss used a gloved hand to shield his eyes as he traced their path across the sky, wearing a cheeky boyish grin beneath his blond beard. He sat, somewhat awkwardly, in the street, his back against a small stone wall that would have only reached his waist, were he to stand.

But Moss Oktra'rek wasn't standing. No, the former soldier who had once used his hands to drown a man in mud was now gleefully sitting in some of his own, his backpack on a small grassy oasis beside him as he leant against the small barricade and studied the heavenly bodies above him.

The idea had arrived within a tankard of ale three darkenings prior. The human, glad to be in friendly company following a recent adventure with people lesser known to him, had decided it was high time he and his best friend spent some time in the countryside together.

"Just think, Cal," he'd said between swigs, foaming alcohol glistening in his beard. "We could escape the rush of the city for a brightening or three and enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside."

His grin had stretched into a deep chuckle as he'd watched the elf's reaction, before he'd decided to tease his friend with a little more as his voice dropped.

"And besides, I've heard a rumour."

The pair spent the next candlemark whispering conspiratorially, as the mystic passed on what he'd heard during his most recent road journey, and the simple plan was hatched.

Moss had agreed to his friend's request for a few brightenings to persuade Kailin that this was anything but a terrible idea, before the time had finally arrived for their journey to begin.

With the triple suns hanging immediately over him, signifying that the middle of the brightening was upon the city, the human stood and turned to face the house on the other side of the wall, frosty mud adorning his studded leather gambeson. A collection of small pebbles - their frozen forms unable to penetrate the blond's leather gloves - were held in his left palm, before he took one and then another, sending them towards the house.

The tiny missiles flew through the air, fleeing their previous owner and the vined wall he was quickly hiding behind. Their looping arc sent them up high, before gravity eventually teased at them and lured them downwards. The pebbles never reached the ground, however, clattering harmlessly upon the roof of Oakvine Estate, bouncing upon the hard surface until they found a resting place two levels above the street.

And outside in the cold street, two excited grey eyes peered over the stone wall, keenly watching for any movement inside the house.

In truth, it had not really been a matter of persuading his love of anything. They had been working hard on clearing out the cobwebs in their new home and it was very nearly down to the details before it would be ready for them to move in. And details, well, they weren’t really his forte. So a couple of days away with Moss seemed a perfectly timed excursion to let Kailin stretch her creative legs and make sure he wasn't in the way, interrupting whatever her vision was. To his mind at least.

He’d thrown a few things into a pack in anticipation of Moss’ arrival, but then aeternia makes work for idle hands, so he found himself staring at a blank piece of wall and holding a piece of timber and trying to convince himself that he did, in fact, know how to put up a shelf.

It could not be so hard as all that

Still, there was a rather perplexed expression on the fair elven features, the same one that had been in place as he had systematically inspected all of the relevant items that had been deemed necessary for this task. Hammer, yes. Nails too. The wood he presumed was to be the shelf. And then these other bits that he hadn’t quite figured out yet. Perhaps he had been a little hasty in deciding not to wait for the joiner who had done the rest of the work.

He had just resolved that he might at least make a start before the fellow returned, hammer poised over an elegantly gripped nail and just tapped to ensure he’d got it all lined up correctly when a slight clattering noise from above his head gave him pause. He hadn’t even touched anything. There was no way he was responsible for that, surely? With a rather suspicious glance at the ceiling above his head as if he expected it to come crashing down upon him, the elf returned his focus to the task at hand only for another skittering rattle to sound, and this time, he set the hammer and nail down again on the floor and moved toward the window that looked out onto the street, thinking he would lean out a little way and make sure it was not anything critical falling off the roof.

Moss watched as the pebbled pair tumbled across the roof, offering quiet thunks upon impact with the cold roof. He squinted his grey eyes then, watching for movement from the house.

The plan was for Calanon to be ready and packed by midbrightening, then for Moss to get his attention by throwing small stones at Oakvine Estate. From there, the Sylrosian would collect his gear, before the pair stole away from the house and onto the open road.

Of course, the plan didn't need to involve that at all. Moss could have quite easily knocked on the front door and greeted Kailin before he and Calanon began their took to the road - like a mature adult might have done - but the plan had been devised and 'perfected' after a few too many ales, and so there he was, standing behind a low wall in the street and intentionally avoiding approaching the situation like a rational person.

A few moments of silence passed as the mystic peered over the stone wall and, after seeing no response, he collected another two pebbles from the ground and threw them one after the other towards the house.

The first sailed through the air, seamlessly following the same arc as its predecessors, harmlessly clattering across the roof tiles, but the second one went at an errant angle, and the human flinched as he watched the pebble ricochet awkwardly off the underside of the gable and deflect directly towards the shutters of one of the upper level windows.

It was as Calanon put his hand to the wooden shutter that the third clang came, and this time it had the distinctive pattern of sound that suggested something was certainly falling from above. So the elf was quick to push upon the wood, flinging the slatted shutter open to see what was sliding off the roof of Theo newly purchased house.

It was perhaps a shame then, that he had not paid quite such keen attention to the ‘plans’ that Moss was following so closely, having been distracted first by the ale and then moreso by the tender goodbyes he’d been sure to bestow upon his lover the night before. As previously observed, he was not one for the details anyway.
And so it was that the Sylrosian leant forward out of the window just as Moss second pebble clattered of the gable, and it was only the god given grace and dexterity of his race that allowed him to duck to the side and avoid catching Moss’ salutation right in the face.

The low wall did not offer any concealment when viewed from above, and it was a slightly irritated and confused expression that Moss would see first directed his way before Calanon remembered vaguely what had seemed such an amusing idea the brightening before. The dark head disappeared for a moment before the elf was back and launching that stray pebble back at the ill hidden mystic.

“Just thank the gods that didnt hit the paintwork “ he called down, half disapproval, half smirk. “I’ll be a moment”.

Pulling the shutters closed and checking with no small amount of concern that the projectile had not in fact scuffed anything, Calanon found himself entirely without disappointment to be abandoning his shelf erection project. He did of course apologise profusely to Kailin after bounding down the stairs a little too enthusiastically for it to be altogether convincing, and then with a final lingering kiss for his beloved he had picked up the few things he needed and stepped out to find the wayward stone thrower.

“We are to return with pearls or not at all the lady says” was his offering in terms of greeting as he met his friend at the gate. " I said three brightenings or thereabouts. So let us hope these Lutran are not too far away hmm?"

Moss let out a surprised guffaw as Calanon appeared at the window and disappeared from sight in almost the same instant, the shutters clattering noisily with the outside of the house as a sheet of ink-black hair fell behind the sill.* A shocked grin was still stretched across his face as the elf returned fire, another snort of laughter filling the crisp winter air as the pebble crashed into a leafy bush well short of the stone wall, the garden serving as its new home.

The human waited, then, as his friend closed the shutters, occupying his time by patiently resting against the low wall, somewhere between leaning against its side and sitting atop it. There was no effort applied to hiding any more. Their little jaunt had been completed, and it was all the more humorous for the Sylrosian apparently having forgotten the ale-infused plot.

When Calanon eventually appeared in the street, his friend's faded smile quickly renewed itself.

"Pearls, eh?" he chuckled. "Kailin has expensive tastes!"

Moss bent down to collect his pack, hoisting it up onto first one shoulder and then the next, taking a moment to allow his body to adjust to the added weight before stepping out into the street and starting the journey towards the nearest city gate.

He slowed to ensure Calanon could catch up, before patting the elf's upper arm which, while slender, lacked the bulk of the human's limbs.

"So, friend," he added with a jestful glance, "are we going to search for those pearls before or after working on your throwing arm?"

The elf gave a little sniff and smoothed down his shirt as the pair fell into an easy gait beside one another “ Kailin obviously has impeccable taste” he corrected, with a nod. “But if we are going to offer a sweetener for disappearing for a few days then I think a pearl or two would do it.” He glanced at Moss “ Not that I think she will be missing you overly” he amended firmly. No matter how close they had gotten in Eriale.

It was mostly lighthearted, but the elf still felt a little uneasy about the friendship the two shared, though he would never admit it. Well aware that it came of his own insecurities, Calanon nevertheless was not quite able to silence the whisper of jealousy that murmured in his ear whenever he let himself dwell on it.

Dropping his eyes to where the human’s hand patted his arm, the Sylrosian turned a rather cool gaze upon the heavier set man “ Some of us..” he began, looking Moss over with an affected disdain “ are beings built for grace and speed. Perfected by the Gods themselves. If you will compare a racehorse to a cart pulling nag then of course they have different strengths.”

But then his face split into a wide , conciliatory smile.” No matter though, I’m sure you will come into your own with the simpler tasks. Load bearing maybe? Perhaps you should carry my pack too?” He even went so far as to shrug it off and extend it toward the man. “No? Well lets be on our way then. Where are we heading again?”

So, he’d ignored a few more of the details than just the pebbles thing it seemed. Something about Lutrans. Either way, he paid more attention now as the pair moved through the city streets toward the gates.

Moss let out a snort of mirth as his elven friend spoke of Kailin having impeccable taste.

"I was referring to the jewellery, Cal, not you," he chuckled, "but you're pretty expensive to keep company with, too."

The human's laughter continued, despite a slight frown of confusion at the second reference to Calanon's lover. Quite what that comment meant, or even if there was any meaning behind it, Moss couldn't be sure, but the elf had smiled as he'd said it, so he paid it no heed.

Another guffaw escaped bearded lips as the Sylrosian began to wax lyrical about the elven form,

"Aye," he chuckled as the pair walked, "I saw just how graceful you are when you tried to somersault your way out of that forest glade in Medonia! You were quite the Gods-perfected athlete that darkening!"

Moss' chortling could be heard along the street as both men made their way towards the edge of the city.

"Carry your pack?" he chuckled. "I could carry you if I had to, Cal! You wouldn't weigh much, even soaking wet!"

The mystic moved with something of a spring in his step, anticipating the little adventure the pair were on.

An adventure, it seemed, that Calanon knew very little about.

"Gods, Cal, just how much did you drink the other darkening?" he asked, his tone more serious than before, though a friendly grin remained. "We're heading to the River Gloria, because I heard about some Lutrans there with some pearls. Seems like as good an excuse as any for a few brightenings away, don't you think?"

Another chuckle followed with a gentle shake of the man's head, his grey eyes friendly turning to face his the elf as they reached the gate.

"Ready?"

Godsdammit. Calanon looked at least a little sheepish as he recalled that Moss had borne witness to his rather inelegant sprawl onto the forest floor back in summer. "It was dark" he protested, pouting a little at the reminder of the bruise to his ego that unfortunate incident had inflicted. Never mind the fact that he'd fallen into a hole, a hole not moments afterwards. It all rather undermined his argument, so he wisely decided to let that one drop for now, until he could redeem himself and his race.

At the human's assertion that he was a fly weight, Cal snorted. "You could try, mellonin, but I think it would not end well for you. Though perhaps if I get tired later."

It was rather a ridiculous thought, and the elf was uncomfortably reminded of the moment that he had found he had been carried, by Silevon no less. He could be thankful that he had been unconscious and that therefore had been spared the indignity of experiencing it. Still, it made him feel a little flustered and he shifted the topic onto their current endeavour. Honestly, once Moss had floated the idea of a couple of days away, the details hadn't seemed of much import. Kailin would have the space she needed to put her finishing touched on the house, they could blow off a little steam, it seemed a fairly flawless idea. And there was no need for both he and Moss to be in possession of all the details. They could talk about it on the way. As they were doing.

"I knew that. Lutrans. And pearls. It was just the where I'd forgotten" He hadn't drunk that much, and had recalled enough to mumble something about rivers to Kailin as he informed her of their plans when he'd tumbled into bed that night. Admittedly, it wasn't exactly where his attention had been, but he was sure he'd conveyed the basics between everything else.

"Yes, ready" he shot a look at Moss, who seemed to think that stepping outside of the city gates was suddenly a daunting prospect, and gave a not to the gate guards as they passed, who had little interest in those leaving the city of queens, but kept a close eye on those trying to enter. Then it was a walk to the North where they'd eventually meet the River Gloria, Cal reckoned it would be less than half a brightening before they hit the banks. The question was, how much further it would be then. " Is that all you know? Somewhere on the River Gloria?

Moss offered Calanon a gentle smile as the elf tried to explain away the clumsiness that the human had witnessed with his own eyes. The man's pride was important to him, so the mystic opted to drop the subject. After all, it simply wouldn't do to start their time away by offending his companion.

He did chuckle lightly, however, at Calanon's reaction to the thought of being carried. It had, of course, been nothing more than a jest, but the elf's insistence that he could not be lifted off the ground by someone of the former militiaman's build made him wonder, and he took a step away from his friend to get a view of him from head to toe, eventually nodding with a grunt of satisfaction. The Sylrosian's scoffing had done nothing to persuade the mystic that he could not, in fact, hoist 'the graceful one' over his shoulder.

"Then you'd best not get tired," he quipped, sending a cheeky wink in his friend's direction.

Calanon was till on the defensive about his ignorance of the agreed upon plan, but the bearded blond only found humour in the denial. As the pair stepped out into the countryside, small rocks of the road crunching and grinding together beneath their boots, Moss scoffed at the elf's underestimation.

"Thank the gods, Cal, that one of us does his homework, hmm?" he teased lightly with a pat on the shoulder, his tone remaining cordial. "Rumours are rumours, so of course nothing can be guaranteed, but the story I heard was of two fishermen who were at their favourite spot. Of course, no fisherman worth his salt reveals precisely where the biggest fish are, but I was able to glean that it was on the River Gloria, somewhere near the tributaries halfway between here and Riversong."

Almost instinctively, his voice dropped, conscious of other travelers who were passing them by on their way to the city gates, and he leaned a little closer to his companion with the same conspiratorial grin that he'd worn in the tavern a few darkenings earlier.

"Apparently one of these fisherman chased a Lutran, giving the creature such a fright that it dropped one of these pearls that you say Kailin is so desperate for. The creature was swimming in the direction of a nearby Lotholt, so I think our plan is simple enough: find the Lotholt and start asking questions."

Moss resumed his earlier position, granting the Sylrosian some space as he shrugged happily.

"And who knows?" he added with a chuckle. "Perhaps we'll even catch a fish or two!"

The elf eyed Moss suspiciously as the human seemed to appraise him. It was true that he might be more lithe than the thick set man, but Calanon would be only too happy to demonstrate that it was not always bulk that won a battle. Hopefully it was not something they would ever have to test.

He didn't really have any rebuttal to the fact that he had paid less attention to the plan than perhaps he ought though, and he gave it his full focus now, as their feet ate up the road beneath their boots.

"Where did you hear it?" he asked, curious as to where the mystic had been spending his time to pick up on such tales. It might of course be nothing, but Calanon supposed that most rumours had some basis in fact, even if they got twisted and distorted along the way.

He was no fisherman though, and his last excursion round these parts had seen him fleeing from an angry Mer, so he hoped Moss knew his way around a Lutran. With a slight furrowing of his brow he considered what he'd heard so far. " Well yes, that sounds sensible" He paused a moment before offering up a question that he thought of most importance. "What exactly is a 'lotholt'?"

***

They had been on the road for some time, having met the river a little while ago and forked right to walk alongside it, heading upstream. Rosyun seemed a long while back, and it was the elf who eventually suggested they pause and refuel. Stepping off the path, he wandered a little closer to the riverbank and lowered himself on to the grass there, the length of his cloak forming a barrier between him and the cold ground before reaching into his pack and retrieving two paper wrapped pieces of pie he had snaffled from the kitchen before he left. Road rations were usually not so good, so they might as well enjoy at least one meal. Extending one toward Moss, Cal tugged off his gloves with his teeth and tucked in, thinking that they could not stop too long if he did not want the cold to set it. They would need a fire tonight for sure.

" You are always moving around Moss" he observed, as the pair ate their lunch by the side of the river, running fast with snowmelt. " Do you suppose you'll put down roots anywhere?" It was a subject that was understandably at the front of his mind at that time, given the recent house purchase. It felt odd to be thinking of somewhere else as home, and in truth, Calanon had never expected to feel it at all. But Port Alyandrya...Kailin really, had given him some stability after many eras feeling rootless and windswept. And it was surprising how different he felt for it. Sympathetic eyes rested briefly on his friend then, as the elf realised that Moss likely did not remember where his roots had even been, and he felt clumsy in his questioning. " Not that there is anything wrong with going where the wind takes you" he amended belatedly, not wanting to agitate his travelling companion, nor make him melancholy.

Calanon's suspicious glance caught Moss' attention and the human chuckled, attempting to wave away the man's doubt. The mystic had no intention of carrying his friend, even though imagining it teased an upward turn into the corners of his mouth.

"I heard it a couple of times, actually," he answered the elf as the pair made their way in a northerly direction. "Rumours spread, and the I first got told it by a traveler I met on the way to Charisme. I didn't think much of it, especially as the River Gloria was facing back. But then I overheard it again a few darkenings ago in the city we've just left."

The human shrugged, as if hearing of potential wealth just waiting to be claimed was commonplace...because it was.

"I was at The Golden Horseshoe and I heard two old men make mention of it again. The details were slightly different, but the crucial points remained: the River Gloria, a fisherman, a Lutran, and a pearl."

Moss nodded at Calanon's follow up question. He had assumed his own ignorance was due to his amnesia - and the pair of rumour-mongers in the tavern had given him a sideways glance when he'd asked them about it - but perhaps it wasn't a commonly known term. The strange look he'd been given could have just been because he was trying to join in on someone else's conversation.

"A Lotholt is a Lutran village," he offered with another shrug, though he had no reason to doubt the claim. "They're usually build part on land and part on water, apparently."

The conversation had ebbed and flowed since then, but Calanon's suggestion to stop to eat was well received. Even more so when he revealed the pieces of pie, still holding a small amount of warmth despite the cold weather.

"Oh, you've outdone yourself, Cal," Moss beamed as he took the offered piece. "So it wasn't just kisses you were stealing when you rushed out the door, eh?"

The human was sitting cross-legged on his travel blanket, which he had folded neatly onto the ground, as he flashed the Sylrosian a wicked grin. He thought highly of Calanon, and he probably didn't say so often enough - though the elf surely didn't need another boost to his ego - and there was a sense of happiness that he and Kailin had found love once more.

That his visits to the City of Queens now meant he got to see two friends, rather than one, was a gratefully received benefit.

The pair hadn't always been together, of course. When Moss and Calanon had opened up to each other near the River Roland, the elf had spoken of Kailin as a former lover, but ever since their chance encounter in Eriale - the details of which still caused a slight flushing of the blond's cheeks when he recalled them - Moss had come to accept the couple and appreciate what they had.

"Hm?" came the mystic's initial response to the elf, once he realised his friend was speaking, before he paused.

The piece of pie a useful distraction as he gave his mind a few moments to catch up with the conversation, and when he spoke again, his tone had somewhat sobered.

"Oh, well...perhaps. I do have a small home in Prime, though it's not much to look at. In fact, I should take another look at it once the snow melts. I won't cross the Khardran Pass at this time of year, though."

Not again. Not yet.

"I was thinking of perhaps approaching it as some kind of project. I'm sure there are repairs to be done, and I'd like to learn some kind of trade."

Moss' tongue escaped his lips to collect a small piece of pastry that had become entangled in his beard, before his eyes shifted away from his friend and towards the frigid river water nearby.

"I'm not sure if I'll live there, though," he admitted as he listened to the roar of water that was muffled by the high bank upon which they sat. "There is nothing else left for me there, now."

Dark grey eyes made their way back to Calanon's emerald pair. The human's expression was briefly one of contemplation, before the man forced a smile across his features.

"I am happy for you and Kailin, though," he spoke quietly but sincerely. "I'm happy that you have a house of your own, now."

And with that said, he took another bite of the pie, appreciating its warmth and - he assumed with no small degree of confidence - Kailin's baking prowess.

The fact that Moss had come across the tale of the Lutran with the pearls more than once gave a least a little more credence to it in Calanon’s eyes, and by the time they broke off for their simple lunch he at least understood the premise of their undertaking. And had learnt something new regarding Lutran’s which he supposed was something.

Once settled, the elf ate quickly, for the bite of the cold was much more noticeable when one was still, and his question toward his friend settled like their breath in the sharp winter air. Prime? Of course, that was where Calanon had first met the human, but he had not realised Moss owned property there. “ And do you have any recollection as to how you came by it?” he asked, talking of the home Moss referenced. “ I know you said you had been exploring some of your past….is there much you have learned?”

He noted the shifting expression of his friend and wondered again if now was really the time to have touched on such topics, but Moss smoothed out his expression and offered a smile, though Calanon recognised it for the effort it was.

When it came a few moments later, his own was wide and genuine as Moss mentioned the shift in the elf’s own circumstances, and the Sylrosian could not have hidden his happiness if he tried. He shook his head, for indeed, he had not envisaged such a thing himself and it had all sprung upon him rather suddenly.

“It is not something I had expected to happen” he said, absently toying with a blade of winter grass as dipped his head, unused to wearing the grin that softened his features. “ But..yes. It will be good I think.”

By the time they got back it might be that the house would be ready to move into, and he and Kailin would have a home. He had thought to tell her, those couple of darkenings prior as they had curled before the fire amongst the cobwebs, that it was not the roof they sat beneath that made that real. More that it was her, and all that she had given him. And though he had not gotten so far as to say the words, he hoped at least that she felt it as he did. Whatever twists the road had taken, he felt more settled and certain than he had done in a long time.

“ You should get working on that trade” he offered, looking askance at Moss, hoping to lighten the mood of their conversation once again. “ And then you can do the manual work at our place. For it is not my forte”

The piece of pie didn't last long in the outside world. Moss was so used to hard bread and salted beef while on the road that Calanon's baked gift had come as a very pleasant surprise, and that resulted in the human almost inhaling it in sheer excitement.

"Kailin is a good baker," he stated simply.

He would be sure to keep that in mind the next time she offered to host. A quiet chuckle eased its way out of his mouth at the thought. The next time. There always seemed to be a next time.

"Truthfully, no," Moss replied to his friend's question, speaking between licks of his fingers to ensure he didn't miss out on a single flake of pastry. "I only knew I had it because when I came around on the Khardran Pass, the deed was in my possession. I suppose my attackers didn't think it was worth stealing."

He shrugged his shoulders, then pulled out his water flask and took a swig to rinse his mouth, before turning it onto his fingers to clean them. He used it sparingly, and in any other season, he wouldn't have used it at all - the River Gloria had plenty of water to spare, after all - but he didn't fancy the idea of freezing his fingertips in the frigid currents.

"That was how I first met Kailin, actually," he continued. "I had the deed but I couldn't remember how to get to the Domicilium."

He fell silent, then, reflecting on the encounter. Kailin had been so quick to offer help. She had even tried to heal his memory loss, as fruitless as that endeavour had turned out to be. A small sigh followed. It had only been an era or so since they'd met, and yet it seemed a lifetime ago. And to a man with amnesia, it effectively was a lifetime.

"I've learned bits and pieces," the mystic addressed the next question. "I know I was a militiaman. I believe I was an acrobat of some kind. And I think I have some kind of history involving the sea, though I'm not sure what."

Moss grinned, then, recalling a conversation the pair had briefly had in Daltina.

"I imagine you wouldn't like to investigate my potential maritime history with me, Cal?" he jested, knowing how little the elf appreciated the unsteady movements of the water.

And of course, there was also Mara. Moss had spoken of her to his Sylrosian friend in Medonia, but he didn't mention her again. He still hoped that he and his friend could be the bloodhounds who might rescue his sister - if, indeed, she still lived - but such morose topics were not the way to start a weekend adventure. Perhaps he might speak of her later...

Moss' eyes widened slightly in surprise as he saw Calanon's effusive grin, and his own forced smile became relaxed, the bearded blond openly happy for his two friends.

"Ha!" the mystic guffawed at his friend's mention of manual labour.

He stood, then, shaking out his travel blanket and beginning to pack it away. It wouldn't do for the pair to remain stationery for too long.

"It is only not your forte because of those tiny things you call arms," he teased, mirth filling his gaze as he looked across to the Sylrosian, before he adopted a more respectful tone. "But yes, I shall work on that trade. And perhaps you will find some small jobs around the house that you'd trust me with? It will do wonders for my confidence to gain the experience, I'm sure."

A gentle but sincere smile pulled at the corners of Moss' mouth as he hoisted his backpack onto his shoulders once more. Learning a trade meant building a future, and that was an immensely satisfying thought - even though the past could never truly be forgotten.

Calanon snorted. “ Kailin didn’t make that” he said, with a disbelieving glance toward his friend. “ She may be talented, but I have never known her to cook in all of the time we have spent together. No. You can thank the bakers on Castle row for that”. He was still chuckling to himself in amusement that Moss thought Kailin had been elbow deep in flour making pie when the man answered his earlier question. “Oh? I think I remember her telling me actually…” He had been interested in how his love had come to know the human, about how they’d become so close and Kailin had diligently answered all of his questions. He did not feel much better afterwards though, as he recalled.

As Moss went on, there were pieces of the story that he recognised, such as the man’s former life in the military, and other information that was new. He eyed Moss dubiously, trying to imagine him as an acrobat, and then rolled his eyes at his friend’s question. It was a well established fact that the Sylrosian Elf did not fare too well on the water and he doubted it would ever stop being a source of mild amusement for those around him.

Still, he softened as he spoke of the steps forward he and Kailin had made, and even took Moss’ jibe regarding his musculature in good part. “ I think it would do wonders for my relationship too” he added, in response to the man’s request. “I don’t know why Kailin assumes I know how to do any of these things involving a hammer. It was not as if I would have been allowed to go round making modifications at home!” It was a bittersweet thought as Calanon imagined the reaction had he lifted a nail toward any part of the family home, crafted over eras by his Grandfather’s hands. All gone. Such a waste.

But he refused to let himself linger on it, and pushed up to his feet, leaning over and patting Moss on the shoulder companionably. “ Anyway, I am sure we can find some things for you to. Most likely repairing all things I attempted.”

They were back on their way then, the elf setting a brisk pace as he attempted to chase some of the chill from his bones. “ We should find somewhere sheltered to make camp tonight” he observed, eyes scanning the landscape ahead. “It is cold now, but if a wind gets up it will be bitter, even with a fire.”

"Oh."

The revelation that Kailin was not personally responsible for the delicious pastry that he was devouring surprised Moss for a moment, though he wasn't sure why. The brunette's family manor had a kitchen with its own staff, so there was no need for her to hone her culinary skills, though perhaps that might change in her own home with Calanon. Moss didn't know if the couple could afford a cook, and he was content to not pry.

Instead, the conversation was moving on, and he studied his friend's reaction to the loose handful of memories he'd just recited. The topic was a heavy one for Moss, so the silent response the elf gave to his nautical quip softened the moment for him and enabled him to think of more pleasant things.

Calanon's admission of his limited handyman skills brought a gentle grin to Moss' bearded lips - the Sylrosian wasn't renowned for his humility - but it faded once the human caught his friend's tone, even if the meaning behind it remained hidden.

"Well then," he grinned as Calanon stood, "it seems we have a plan: you attempt to do manual labour to stay in Kailin's good graces, and then I can come along and fix it all for you!"

A chuckle followed easily, and he fell into step alongside his friend as the pair moved onwards. As the elf spoke, Moss nodded in agreement.

"Aye, we should settle on a place before it gets too dark."

Pitching a tent on a freezing and potentially snowing winter darkening was not what the human had imagined when planning their boys' weekend.
