Again she dipped into the aether pulling on threads of mind essence, gathering them together. This time it was not the problem of time that caused her issue though. Even as she worked object after object hit her. The Dog was hanging back with his good arm out of the way, but his friend made quick work of the distance and his cleaver impacted the light sphere with a jarring hit. Cracks were spreading across the surface of her armour as she worked.

She worked intensely to finish the spell, weaving together the strands of mysticism. Crack. A fissure of light spread across her form. Her armour was starting to crack apart. Even now her invisibility hid her, or he might have known where to strike. Where to place the cleaver for the best effect. She could all but see his breath fog up the armour as he got close. Crack! The cleaver hit again.

There was a reason the legions had specially trained war mages, casting spells under duress like this was no mean feat. The concentration necessary to both cast a spell and be mindful of one's surroundings was not something that was easy to come by, it required training and hard work. Something Tali was quickly finding as she tried to concentrate, tried to get the essence to do what she wanted it to.

Glittering shards of glass split around her head as a bottle hit right where her head might have been. Finally, her spell was ready. A weave of pure mind gathered in her hands. All she had to do was… CRACK!

The room was bathed in darkness as the light fled. Her shield was gone. All she had left was a spell directed at someone in the darkness. And maybe enough time to get out of the way before that cleaver came back down. Or maybe she could cast her spell before the essence left her and the threads failed, already they were starting to fray at the edges. Already her casting was starting to fizzle. Time was a precious resource, and it was running desperately low.

Alright, I can do this. If I can get one of them down and-

Crack.

I just need one. Weave the spell and slit his throat in his sle-

Crack. Crack.

Feth, where was I? Wait, there it is! Okay, weave that there-

CRACK.

By the Gods I'm going to die here-

CRACK.

MAKE IT STOP.

It felt as if she were on the verge of going mad. Each strike against her shield made such a horrid sound, managing to leave cracks in her shield and in her concentration. She had to keep trying. She couldn't just give up now! Someone was depending on her! A total stranger, mind you, but still-!

There! Done! The spell managed to slip together and create a blanket of sleep before her. Yet as it did, the final strike managed to rip through her shield and envelop the room once more in darkness. The last thing she saw was her target and the cleaver that was headed right for her. She couldn't just waste the spell, it was her only opportunity!

In the direction that she remembered her target being in last is where she tossed the spell, hoping it would hit but couldn't be certain for she dived to the right so that she would be safe from harm. There was so much at stake. So much left up to fate, whether she succeeded in disarming her opponent and whether or not she managed to escape an injury.

Would fate grant her victory? Or would the Gods' enjoyment of her torture win over?

Time.

In the darkness there was nothing for her to judge time by. She had no sense of how long she had until the cleaver came down again. Still, she chose to cast the spell, wasting precious moments. Scattering them out in the hopes of a bountiful harvest.

She could hear them, for a brief shining moment she thought the glowing threads of mystic essence might just have illuminated the room for her, but that glow was entirely in her head and all she had to go by was where the Dog had been before the room went dark.

Desperately she dove, hoping to avoid the judgement of time, but she had squandered what little time she had and the cleaver dug deeply into her left arm, scraping painfully against the bone in upper arm.

There was a clatter from the other side of the room. Perhaps her spell had hit home, she had no way of telling as she fell to the floor, the impact from the blade sending her sprawling to the floor.

As she rolled to desperately get out of the way she heard the cleaver come down again. Right where she had been. She felt the floorboards shudder under the impact as she rolled. "Where are you?" the man snarled, landing one blow after another where she had been only moments earlier.

The spell was cast, but it cost too much time. A splitting pain ripped through her arm, forcing her to bite down on her lip to prevent herself from screaming as she fumbled onto the hardwoods. There was a sound prior to her falling? Had her spell worked? Her arm was in such searing agony that it was hard to think straight. All she knew was that more strikes were heading her way so she had to be prepared.

"Skyd!" She hissed through gritted teeth, activating the second round of the ring. As she did so, her legs attempted to find ground while her free arm hung limp at her side. The warm blood trickled down her hand, surely creating a puddle the more she stood there. Her plan was to utilize the flash of light - which she was expecting now - to see if her spell worked. If it did? She would head right for the Dog and slit his throat before he managed to stir awake again. Her spell would protect her from a few attacks so her main priority now was to level the playing field.

Although...

"If I free you, can you fight? Or work on getting the door open for us?" She called out to the woman who had been bound in the chair, forcing the words out despite her mind wanting to only focus on the horrid pain that continued to surge through her whole arm. It was a shot in the dark (literally), but at this point? She was desperate for even a chance at something working. Plus the light would show her position so shouting wouldn't give anything additional away to her enemy.

This had to end fast. Depending on the severity of the wound, she could begin to bleed out or grow weak.

She wasn't going to die. Not this brightening. She had too much to live for now.

Blood poured down her arm as she hissed the words. Thick, dark and warm. Right now the adrenaline was masking the pain, but it was coming. Again the light from the spell lit up the room. The room seemed much as it was before the first light armour had expended, she could just about see the prone from of the Dog on the other side of a table. Her opponent wasted no time either. She felt more than she saw the impact of the cleaver against her new armour. Like someone shoving her. Not enough to send her to the floor, but enough that she got a little extra boost on her way. He was behind her now.

Then, she hesitated. She slowed down to talk to the hostage, enough time for her opponent to get another whack at her with the cleaver. Cracks were starting to appear in the armour. It was intended to save her from a few hits, not withstand a barrage of them. "She'll die before we let you have her, witch." his snarling voice was accompanied by another hit from the cleaver. Cracks were starting to spread all over the surface of her armour, it wasn't going to last much longer.

The woman didn't answer. The cold look in her good eye said it all.

The spell had worked which was fuel enough for her to pursue. She could feel the pain rising up, trying to penetrate what little adrenaline had been fueling her thus far but she couldn't give up. Not yet. Things were starting to lean in her favor, but at the same time not so much. As she advanced, taking note of the strikes against her armor and how much longer it had before she needed to light her final torch, she called out to the woman.

No response. Tali needed to hurry before they both gave in to the darkness that threatened to swallow them whole and leave their hollow corpses in this damned building.

She raised her blade, shoving it down right into the Dog's throat as deep as it would go. After doing that a few times to ensure that he would never wake again, she snapped her gaze back to the cleaver man. He was going to be next. If her spell went down? She would cast it right back up and begin to maneuver around the room, looking for exposed areas on her opponent that she could exploit.

The fight needed to end quickly so she moved hard and fast. Her hope was that he would be dead before her final spell was broken and left her vulnerable.

Perhaps he sensed even through her invisibility what she was about to do. Perhaps there was some other reason he changed his attack. The truth of the matter didn't matter much, only that he changed things around. As she reached down to slit the Dog's throat, he kicked her. As hard as he could. There was no damage, but there was still an impact and the force of it sent her sprawling across the floor. Her dagger, slick with the Dog's blood spinning out of her hand and settling on the floor.

The sight of the Dog bleeding out seemed to infuriate his friend. "Lost your tooth now, you little witch, you're not leaving this room alive!" The dagger, free of the confines of her spellwork lay plainly visible on the floor, covered in blood.

CRACK! Again the cleaver impacted against her shield.

CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!

Glittering fissures spread all across as her armour as the light of thaumaturgy finally buckled under the pressure. Then the cleaver came down again.

CRACK!

And the light went out. Out there in the dark he was bringing the cleaver to bear again. A thousand different ways for it to come cracking down on her.

"Skyd!"

CRACK!

Sparks flew as the armour took another hit. Her eyes took a second to focus on the blade right in front of her. A blink of the eye later and she would have had a very serious new haircut. As it was the blade was close enough that it almost touched her nose.

She was safe behind her armour of light, for now. But she would need to get around her foe to get the dagger.

Things seemed to be on hanging on a balance board. While she had managed to slit the dog's throat, watching with a hint of satisfaction as the blood pooled around his head, she lost her weapon and now lingered on the final shielding of her ring. Everything was in the process of winding down. Her next couple of decisions would determine the end of it all - for better or for worse. She had to act fast, but ensure that speed didn't take away from caution. Her shield had to hold out for as long as possible - at present, it was the only light source in the room.

Time to act.

She bolted away from the man, using her good arm to overturn or throw any furniture that was available behind her in hopes of slowing him down. Her plan was to try and get the dagger back - after that, she had two choices. Try and free the unresponsive woman while there was still light or try and disarm her opponent so that she could deliver the final blow.

If she managed to succeed in obtaining her weapon, she would choose the latter. He needed to die before she could even begin to conjure an escape and rescue plan.

She heard cursing behind her as one of cups she'd thrown in desperation landed a blow on her opponent. Tali scurried desperately over furniture. She felt, more than she saw the impact of the cleaver on the table as she dove under it. The wood creaked and he spent precious seconds freeing the cleaver while she moved. Every impact, every time she jostled her damaged arm sent a knife of pain up her shoulder.

"Come out from under there," he growled after her.

She was so close, the dagger was just barely out of reach. She could see his eyes go wide as he saw what she was going for and he moved quickly. For a man of his bulk he moved with surprising speed, his foot pulled back to kick the dagger away.

It was too late.

Her fingers stretched desperately and managed to just close on the hilt, pulling it away as she felt the whoosh of air against her hand as his kick went wild. She had her dagger.

Her opponent still had his cleaver and her spell still lit up the room, but from down here on the floor she wasn't much but a decent sized target.

Each harsh movement erupted a small whimper of cry, barely audible through her bitten lip as she tried to keep it subdued. Her opponent didn't need the reinforcement from her pain nor did he need to think about her state of mind as a result of such. No, she had to remain calm. Her life depended on it. As did the woman that was still bound and not responsive.

Just...have to....reach...

Got it! The dagger's hilt felt like a small victory in her hand, pulling back just before his foot came down and attempted to kick the weapon away. While she was on the floor and under the safety of a cracked table, an opportunity presented itself. She waited until his cleaver went down before moving - rolling out from under the table as she tried to slash the back of his legs.

After that? Run like hell and see if her plan worked. If not? Might as well get some distance so that her hazy mind could conjure up a new plan. The pain was starting to make things difficult to think clearly. Things needed to end and fast.

Again, the cleaver came down on the table cracking it and showering Tali in splinters, and bits of table as she tried to get her dagger into position. With the table on top of her she needed precious seconds to get the table off her so she could strike again. The upside to all of this was that the wood shielded her from any further assault.

He picked a piece of the table up with one hand, his other hand bringing down the cleaver against her shield. CRACK! Tali could see cracks running up the side of her shield as it weakened under the assault. It couldn't take too many more of those. One, maybe two more and she'd be without light and without protection.

The attack gave her the opening she needed and she threw herself across the floor, slashing desperately at her opponent's calves. He cursed loudly and dropped to one knee with a crunch. With a roar he launched himself at the door, blowing it off its hinges.

Their fight so far might have been masked by the fact that there was a certain degree of screaming and noises expected from an interrogation, but this large man screaming for help was bound to bring more people up here. Tali could see his chest expand as he drew breath for a mighty roar, she had a single chance to do something before he could call for help.

It was hard to maintain focus. There was so much happening at once, not to mention the pain was intensifying in her arm which made it hard to concentrate. The table that once gave her shelter flew upward, the confounded cleaver swinging in the opposite direction. Her copper gaze watched as the cracks continued to form. She was running on little luck at this point and needed to take advantage of every opening. Upon him freeing her from the table, she saw it and acted.

Success! A swipe against the back of his leg sent her opponent onto the ground. However, it seemed as though he wouldn't give up so easily. The door burst open and he began to prepare himself for a cry for help. If that happened? She would be fethed. She bolted off the ground, moving as fast as she could and tried to pounce on top of him with her dagger aimed for his throat.

He had to die. If he didn't, she would and that wasn't an option at this point.

Talindra got up, adrenaline coursing through her as she hopped up on a table, and leapt from there onto the man's back. Her left arm tried to grab a hold of his shoulder, but her fingers didn't seem to be responding right. Her fingers seemed to have trouble clamping down even as the pain coursed up her side.

Her other arm wrapped around his neck and she brought the blade down, hacking away at his chest as she clung desperately to his back. She could feel the weight of his hand as it tried to grab her and throw her off. It wasn't the best of positions to be in. She felt her coat being yanked hard against her throat as he worked desperately to dislodge her. She couldn't breathe. Her collar restricting her access to air as she clung on. Using her legs and her good arm she managed to stay on top of him and stabbing blindly she felt blood spurt all over her fingers as she hit something vital.

She heard him croak, as he too tried desperately to grasp for air. The hand that had been trying to get her off went away, giving her another opening as he tried desperately to stop the bleeding. As Tali dropped to the ground, she could hear his knees hit the floor.

He did not go silently, his gurgling breaths echoing through the room as he tried desperately to keep the bleeding in check. It wasn't long before he collapsed, the life gone from him.

"That was impressive and all," the voice came from the woman tied to the chair, "but do you think you could get me out of here before more of them decide to show up."

It was now or never. She only had one shot at this and she wasn't about to let anything stop her. Once in position, she went for the dive - fighting past the shooting pain in her arm as she latched onto her opponent. There was a second's fear at the realization her fingers weren't doing as they were supposed to, but she couldn't let up. Her other arm took care of the work, stabbing repeatedly in hopes of hitting something vital.

As she should have expected, however, the fether had quite a bit of fight left in him. Simply breathing became impossible as his thick arm grabbed hold of her jacket and tugged. Flashes of that darkening erupted through her mind yet the dagger continued to fly. She couldn't die. Not here. Not now. Not like this. Her determination and remaining adrenaline were just enough, collapsing to the ground as her opponent soon joined her.

Her watery gaze watched as the pool of blood grew around his corpse, giving a faint smile through labored breaths. She did it. They were both dead. What was meant to be a simple thieving mission had resulted in a bloodbath with her as the victor. However, with her victory came the harsh reminder of the injuries she had sustained. Her attempt at regaining composure turned into sharp inhales, squeezing her eyes shut as she tried to wait for it to die down enough to move.

A voice, however, broke through her efforts. The woman was alright? And...speaking? It was confusing, but she spoke the truth. Now wasn't the time to give into exhaustion or pain. There were others downstairs that could come and 'check up on things' any minute. She took a few deep breaths before forcing herself up onto her feet. With her bloody arm hanging limp at her side, she staggered over and cut the woman's bindings. "C-can you walk?" her voice was weak for any strength she had left was being used to keep her upright.

She wanted to search the Dog's body before leaving, to try and find some proof that it was her that killed him. However, as of right now, she was more interested in getting out before they were caught. Not losing her arm as a result of not tending to it was also a secondary priority.

She flexed her hands as the were cut free, working the blood back into her good hand. Her other hand was a broken mess, fingers bent at angles they were not meant to go. She looked up at Talindra, looking slightly left of her shoulder actually. Between the glowing light and the invisibility spell, Talindra appeared as a vaguely human shaped ball of light in the otherwise dark room.

"They thought it was more fun to break my fingers than to start on my legs," she said, the way she got unsteadily to her feet seemed to undercut the bravado somewhat. The way her eye had swelled shut made her scan the room by moving her head more than normal.

"Let's get out of here," she said, wincing slightly as she set weight on her left leg.

"Who sent you anyway? Was it the Vidame or the Marquis?"
