[Temperance] Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice [Eclair]

Timestamp: TBD by Éclair

Changes were afoot.

Malice—no, that wasn’t right. It was Temperance now. Temperance had taken on a decidedly different character since its old cults and historic villains had been replaced with a much more modern one in the last era who had significantly different ideas of what exactly the city’s purpose on Telath could be. There had been only small rumor of the change in management that had escaped the city’s dark border, but to those that had heard it, it had been thoroughly shocking—and, in truth, part mollifying. After all, Malice had played a particularly nasty part in far too many chapters of Enamorian history, making it a nightmare that mothers told their children to scare them into obedience. Temperance had opportunities to be a far, far different sort of boil on the landscape.

Thus it was that an old man alchemist and his young apprentice found themselves walking into the new land called Temperance in an attempt to meet this new manager. There had been some rumor that changing names wasn’t enough; the city also was in desperate need of a cosmetic makeover too, bringing it out of the gothic horror of its past and into the sparkling beauty of its present and future. From reports, the newest leadership had had a particular fondness for sweets. Nearby bakeries and confectionaries had reported a massive upturn in their trade as of late and the new city was surmised to be the cause.

So that exactly was why they were here. They had sent word to whatever council now led the new Temperance that the revered alchemist Arnald Fitzgerald had developed a serum that could turn inorganic objects into tasty, edible, sweet things with just a few ingredients and some time to mature. He wondered, of course, if this discovery would be of interest to the new area of Temperance—and although he did not write such, he dearly hoped it would as it didn’t seem to be of much use in the more fertile lands of what had once been Enamoria.

Business was not booming, and thus it was on this hope that it might soon be recovered that the white-haired, bent-backed man rented a wagon and pair of donkeys and threw all his worldly possessions in the back. He had also brought along the teenage boy that had been sworn to his service by his impoverished mother nearly a decade earlier. Egon wasn’t very bright but he was loyal, and in Arnald’s old age he found the extra set of hands useful for grabbing things off the higher shelves or opening particularly stubborn jars.

This wagon made its slow, lurching way through the Maeve countryside toward Temperance’s gates, hoping that someone there would take notice and have use of them.

All things Changed.
Some for the Better, some for the Worse,
But so long as it was, t’was New & Interesting? Éclair didn’t mind at all,
Boredom was the Enemy,
And bit by bit, she’d strove over the Era’s since,
She’d abandoned Ziel Aerca to try something Different?
Life had only really improved for the young Jorelite. Well, mostly!
Mostly!
There was always something New,
After all that could be done to Improve Temperance,
That for all,
She’d been oh so dreadfully inclined,
To find means by which all the grisly dark stone of Malice,
Could be replaced with pristine white stone or perhaps pink veined marble,
That. That was, t’was something scary expensive, and really, Éclair while not liking that her town wasn’t especially wealthy, at least Understood enough about Shinies as to know, to know some things? Difficult indeed. Especially when it wasn’t as if the neighbouring towns were rich enough to pilfer either,
And then,
And then Her Mister Jorel,
Had evidently provided a Different Solution,
One that Éclair suspected had its own set of Problems,
But that too was why she had her Aedile Cerys, and Her Lover Melissa there for periodic Common Sense,
It rarely sunk in admittedly,
But such was, t’was Life,
Humming softly,
The discordant tune,
Constant, even if inconsistent,
As she’d taken to sitting with the Guarding Guards,
In eager anticipation for the one that could make useless junk into Yumminess!
Or better yet, bring the Change to Temperance that Éclair had been craving ever since she’d stormed the castle all those Era’s ago,

The steady squeak of the wagon’s wheels came in steady rhythm as the alchemist and his assistant closed in on Temperance’s gates. The old man, bearded and grey as he was, was in the front seat leaned over the pair of leather reins in his hands. The high point of his triangular hat had begun to collapse with age and wear, giving the elderly human a thoroughly disheveled look that didn’t match very well to his alert blue-grey eyes that snapped underneath their shaggy brows. Behind him sat the dirty-faced young boy, his hands curled on the edges of the wagon. He strained forward to catch every sight and sound of their journey, clearly in awe of the process.

It was thus that the pair met the Lady Thane of Temperance—tired, hungry, worn, but otherwise arriving as they had announced. The pair of donkeys pulled up slowly to the cadre of guards, and it took the alchemist about three tugs, each harder than the last, to get them to finally stop some distance ahead of where he had intended.

Arnald leaned out the side of his seat and faced backwards, one hand still on the reins and the other trying to hold up the rim of his oversized hat. “Serale there. Happen to any of you know where I can find the Lady Thane? Just a humble merchant coming to sell wares. Received a summons, too.” And for good measure, the old man stuffed his hand in the back pocket of his trousers underneath his cloak and began digging for the short letter that had been exchanged between himself and Temperance’s city government.

After all, old habits died hard. It may have been a new city but it was still built on the foundations of Malice—and from all appearances, it hadn’t changed very much from its forebearer.

Guarding Guards were Boring,
A belief that Éclair had held for as long as she could remember,
And with the singular exception that was, t’was Her Anna-Sweetheart, it had yet to be truly challenged,
Suffice that she’d taken to ignoring the Guards she sat with,
Once it became obvious that neither had been hired for being Interesting,
And that there was a distinct lack of education when it came to playing Cat’s Cradle, Eye Spy and their ilk,
Patience!
Dubious though,
As to how adept Éclair was, t’was at that,
As oh so many of the People were being Boring and not at all what she’d been, she was waiting for and…
Talky-Talk.
Pay Attention! Focus!
There, Éclair looked between the Man,
The Donkeys and then sheepishly at the way her hands,
Were knotted together from playing Cat’s Cradle, the red string having become a little bit twined and then some. Bereft of practice, she’d rather fallen into ill-habits when Miss Noe was no longer about (which, given Miss Noe, didn’t make Éclair breathe any easier not knowing where the terrifying Elf was…),
”You’re the Candyman?”
