[PA]Days are long, the night is young, even when we crash and burn

Timestamp: Autumn Era XXIV Post Fractum

He had seen Rosie back to her ship, adrenalin still pumping through his veins, but had refused her offer of being seen to by the Ship’s Doctor. There was only one place he wanted to be now, and that was in the arms of his beloved.

It was not far, the distance from the docks to the warehouse and office where Kailin would be, but gods, if it was not a slow and painful journey. Still fearful of their pursuer, the elf hurried as much as he could, but his head swam and he had to pause over often to let his stomach settle before he spilled its contents over the ground. He was not best set to notice the fact that the couple of people he passed seemed to give him a wide berth, his dishevelled appearance and rather unsteady gate marking him as suspect in the extreme.

But he found his way, eventually, to the familiar hulk of a building, feeling a great swell of relief that gave him the energy to continue onwards. He was close, so close to making it through the door when there was suddenly a heavy hand on his shoulder.

The elf gave a small cry of alarm, whirling immediately- and dizzyingly- to look upon his attacker, only for a semi familiar face to blur in and out of focus.

“ All well, m’lord?” It was the guard. The hulking guard who had looked on him with such suspicion when he had first met Kailin here that night she started her imbuement. Stigur…that was his name., wasn’t it?

Calanon’s frantically scrabbling hands then, instead clutched on the coarse fabric of the man’s uniform as he lurched forward, his heart pounding almost out of his chest. Stigur- for that was his name- looked momentarily panicked as he truly took in the state of the elf, the boss lady’s fancy man non the less. “Steady oop there” He subtly wove an arm around the male’s back, under his arm and gave him some support as he guided him into the building, and it was testament to Calanon’s current state of mind that he did not object, but rather leaned into the steadying presence of the other, as solid as a wall at his side.

“Is she here?” The elf pulled himself together enough to ask the question, even as Stigur rapped smartly on the door, glancing worriedly at the blood that stained the collar of the shirt the man wore, and that which spread across his sleeve. He needed to go back and watch the warehouse, but would have to deliver the elf to the lady boss first.

“Aye. The lady Alyxanda is inside. Should I be expectin’ any trouble following you, m’lord?”

Calanon glanced across at the guard and shook his head, though he immediately wished he hadn’t.

“No…no….or I hope not” A fear gripped him then, that he might inadvertently have led danger to Kailin, and he rested a hand briefly on Stigur’s arm, which was a wide as a tree limb. “ Be wary though. Please?”

Stigur nodded, and moved forward to twist the handle and open the door into the main office, where he could hopefully leave the elf in the care of the M’lady or M’lord Alyxanda, and get back to watch the main entrance. He would send for one of the other lads too. Until the injuries the boss’ gentleman friend bore had been explained then he would be on alert.

At the knock on the door, Ian was already pushing to his feet, curiosity written on his face as generally those with appointments (of which there was currently only one scheduled, and that one in the room with Kailin already) simply came right in. He was opening his mouth to call whoever it was in when the door opened, and chocolate brown eyes widened as they flickered between Stigur and his charge.

With the elf's usual poise decidedly lacking, it took a moment for Ian to register the fact that he was looking at Cal. A very beaten up Cal, he corrected, as the red before him suddenly coalesced into blood. And suddenly his sister's black mood for the past two brightenings started to make somewhat more sense.

What the...

He turned to look through the small window in her office, wondering whether or not he should disturb her, when Kailin turned her head to glance almost absently out to see who'd come in, mouth moving as she spoke with her visitor.

Ian saw his sister pause with her mouth open as she recognized her beau more quickly than he had, then a mask fell abruptly over her expression, followed by a thick coating of polite affectation. He caught the beginning of the upward curl of her lips as she turned back to her appointment, noticed the strain even as he turned back toward the duo who had maneuvered themselves through the doorway.

Right then...

Moving out from behind his desk, he set his teeth and met the guard's troubled eyes as he reached for Calanon's other side. "Let's get him settled over here, Stigur. Then you can get back to the warehouse, thank you."

Ian's jaw was tight, but his touch gentle as he helped move Calanon over to a set of deep, comfortable chairs near the unlit fireplace. "Good gods, Calanon, what's happened to you?"

Stigur mentioned his intention to keep watch before ducking back out the door, while Ian left Calanon's side to pour him a few fingers of whiskey from the sideboard behind him.

Meanwhile, Kailin opened the door to her office, making apologies as she led her business contact out and having trouble keeping her attention on the man. Cream skirts swished around her legs as she shut the door firmly behind him and strode over to crouch down in front of her love, lips pinched and pale with worry, and eyes glittering with something that looked like barely reined in anger as her gown pooled around her.

"Mani marte a' lleWhat happened to you, melamin?" Reaching up, her fingers trembled slightly as she held them just above the blood matting his dark hair, then lowered to pick at his sleeve where it was tacky with blood. Fingertips danced gently over his wrists as her hasty cataloguing of his injuries continued, then her gaze - dark-ringed with the strain of the past couple brightenings - lifted to meet Calanon's. "Manke nae lle?Where have you been?"

A hand appeared next to Calanon, ink-stained fingers wrapped around a fine bit of crystal, and the spicy scent of the alcohol teased his nose. "You look like you need this..."

Ian then cleared his throat, readjusting his spectacles once someone took hold of the glass, "I'll just fetch some warm water and cloths, shall I?" And without waiting for an answer, his steps moved toward the door Calanon had just entered through.

Ian. How could have forgotten Ian would be there?. Immediately, the elf tried to straighten and take more of his own weight, managing to raise a protest as the other man moved to the side not currently braced against the very solid guard.

"It probably looks worse than it is" Cal protested weakly, but allowed himself to be manoeuvred toward the chairs he was pointed at. Sliding rather artlessly down into the nearest one, he began to wonder at the wisdom of coming here. Why was Ian fussing so much? He felt fine, all things considered

The click of a latch had him look up, and the doubt in his choice was erased as he laid eyes upon Kailin, his breath catching a little as he watched her see her visitor out before she was there, right there in front of him.

"I'm sorry" he muttered, shifting forward enough in his seat that he could reach for her, not entirely surely how to answer any of the questions being thrown at him. He blinked rather vacantly at his love, repeating the same apology " I just needed to see you." The grip his fingers took on her sleeve was tight enough to support that assertion, only broken when a glass was thrust under his nose and he accepted it without thinking, hand closing around the tumbler but making no move to lift it to his lips. He wasn't sure when his teeth had started chattering, or why they wouldn't stop.

"There's no need Ian, really. I just wanted to see.." His gaze tracked back to Kailin." I just needed.." Calanon pulled back abruptly then, looking in dismay at a garish smear of crimson that marked the upholstery of the chair arm next to him. " Gods, I'm sorry. I think I've ruined this chair". Going to stand, there was a very decisive no from his legs, and he flopped back with a resigned sounding sigh. He felt overwhelmingly tired all of a sudden, the adrenalin that had been fuelling him abandoning him now and making it very difficult to explain himself, or even to follow a thought through to completion.

" I took her back first. But then I came straight here."

Kailin knew the signs of shock, and had seen enough head injuries to suspect that Calanon's was not just a little bump. So as his teeth clattered together, she reached out to carefully take the glass he'd accepted from her brother and set it down next to her on the floor.

He needed it, no doubt of that, but she wanted to get him washed and settled first, maybe into a new shirt so that he wouldn't fuss about the blood he'd tracked in. Which meant she should probably do something to stop the bleeding before Ian got back with supplies.

She'd been worried enough when he'd missed their date two darkenings previous that she'd gone to his rooms - thinking he'd gotten too involved with one of his imbuements and forgotten the time - but he hadn't been there. When there was still no sign of him and the staff where he stayed confirmed that no one had seen him by the next darkening, she'd even gone to have a quiet word with the constabulary, not knowing what else she could do. She would need to remember to let them know he'd returned, and of course the state he was in.

The dread that had begun to turn into a sort of numb grief as the light crept over her sleepless form that morning cracked and thawed now as she looked up at him, but it gave her no relief. Instead, the rage of emotions that had been waiting just under the surface threatened to send her tumbling. And she couldn't afford to fall apart now with him in this state. So she sealed it back up, forcefully, and set about finding her focus.

Taking his too-cool hands in her own, Kailin squeezed them, then began rubbing warmth into them one at a time as he spoke. As he became aware of the blood he'd inadvertently deposited on the chair and tried to stand, she released him, but wasn't in the least surprised when his legs refused to hold him.

"Hush, Calanon... hush melamin," she reached for his hands again as he slumped back into the chair, and drew soothing circles on the backs of them with her thumbs while she worked to set the weave for a Healing spell. The first of what was likely to be many...

"We're not worried about the chair right now..." her tone was the one she'd learned to employ when working with Sliucha in the clinic, though likely with an added warmth that she hadn't had then, certainly with an added strain. "Let's get your arm taken care of, first, okay?"

Battling the shaking of her own hands, she took deep, steadying breaths and attempted to release the first spell, intending that it should crawl up his arm from where she held his hand and seal the wound he'd taken, knitting flesh together as if the injury had never happened. Though, of course, she knew her magic couldn't touch the memories of whatever it was that had been done to him.

"You took who back? Back where? Is someone else hurt?" Because if so, she might need to pace herself here, and not spend all her Vis to make him whole like she desperately wanted to.

Kailin’s voice was soothing, calm when his experiences over the past brightenings had been anything but, and Cal let the words wash over him, blinking back at her. Her hands were warm on his, and he could pick out the flecks of gold in her eyes, but she sounded far away.

If he had been thinking straight, if he wasn’t so overwhelmed with the relief of seeing her, of feeling safe again, then Calanon would likely have realised that it was not the optimum moment to bring Rosie into the conversation. But alas, he had blundered into that unthinkingly, and as the warmth of healing magic stole up his arm and he felt that dull ache that had been present recede, the elf belatedly realised his error as her questions brought him back down to earth.

He knew it was an area of contention, his friendship with the Captain, and one he had skirted deftly since that night in Demios when he had learned quite how much Kailin disliked his friend. But his head was pounding, and trying to think rationally about it was proving difficult.

“..it doesn’t matter” he mumbled, not wanting to go there, not now. “ She’s fi...” He bit the word off before he could complete it, because fine she was not. But..physically at least, Calanon knew she was being looked after. “There’s nothing you need to worry about” he amended, pulling one of his hands away to scrub wearily over his face, tension sharpening the lines that made up his features.

He didn’t want to think about it. Not anymore, not today. He just wanted to curl up in Kailin’s arms and shut out everything he had seen and heard. And to head off a demand for the explanation that he knew he owed, he breathed out a shaky “Please”.

The entreaty was quiet, but heartfelt and his hands squeezed at hers “ I can’t…. I’ll tell you I promise..but not now”

To his horror, he could feel the hot sting of salt in his eyes, and looked away before he betrayed himself entirely and gave in to the upset that was battering at his defences.

Kailin's curiosity only grew as Calanon stumbled over an answer, and she was getting set to push him for a bit more information, when he pulled one of his hands out of hers to rub it over a face that all at once showed her just how exhausted the elf really was. It would have been enough to halt her curiosity, but the 'please' that followed nearly broke her heart.

It was a good thing the first spell had already released, because all at once Kailin was reminded of those first brightenings after her own captivity, of how fragile she'd been, and whatever focus she'd had slipped her grasp. Words failed her entirely for a moment, which only compounded the problem as Calanon seemed to feel he needed to say more to convince her.

"It's okay," she rushed to say, almost on top of his 'not now', "it's okay, melamin. I get it. I know..." she had leaned forward and pushed up to wrap her free hand around the back of his neck gently, fitting their dark heads next to one another and giving him what comfort she could without hurting him further.

She'd seen the tell-tale reddening of Calanon's eyes, the glitter of tears gathering, and grit her teeth against the wash of horrified anger and fear that surged up from a place inside her that knew all too well the atrocities that people were capable of committing. It was, she thought, the first time that she'd faced it from this side of the equation, though. When someone she loved so deeply had - from the look of him, and the look in his eyes - been so terribly misused. The rage she felt at it astounded her, and she cast around inside herself for a place to put it, useless as it was to either of them right now.

Unable to do anything else as they waited for the water that Ian was bringing, she simply held him for a moment, and let herself feel the relief that he was returned to her alive, setting aside the brightenings of worry that would require answers at some point. But that, for now, could wait.

"It's okay, love," she murmured, stroking gently over and over down the back of his neck, "you're here. I've got you."

Her kindness was nearly the undoing of him, and Calanon pressed his face against the crook of her neck, breathing in all that was good and familiar, fighting to subdue the emotion that threatened to carry him away entirely.

Worse, worse because he knew that Kailin would have a unique understanding of what had befallen Rosie,a perspective that he could not possibly share. Worse again because now he could feel so much closer to the horrors of her past that she had revealed to him all those months before.

Of course she knew. Though perhaps she did not yet understand quite how accurate that statement was.

With a great shuddering sigh, the elf sagged against her, allowing himself to be vulnerable for a moment now they were alone . His hands clutched tight at the fabric of her dress, bunching it at her waist as he held on.

Was it okay? He wanted to believe that..he was relatively okay, in the grand scheme of things. But he had seen the expression that had haunted his friend’s face, and that was enough to make him doubt the truth in the statement. Had he been wrong to leave her with her crew? Should he have stayed?

His confidence in his own abilities had been shaken too, that he had been rendered so useless by the presence of the spellbreaker and a couple of lengths of rope. Had been able to do nothing to protect…nothing but bear witness to brutality. Calanon could not help but wonder what would have happened had they not managed to seize that opportunity to flee, and the thought make him hold on to Kailin just that little bit tighter.

Now the fear of pursuit had subsided, the chemical drive to survive waning as his mind dictated the comparative safety of his situation, Cal could feel all the aches and pains he had been wilfully ignoring during their escape. His head was the main source of discontent, for it pounded in time with his pulse, movement only seeming to exacerbate the pain. But there was burning across his shoulders too, muscles held in stasis when his hands had been bound now making their protests known. In fact, as he considered it, Calanon observed that the only part of him that did not seem to hurt was the arm that Kailin had poured her magic into.

Another sigh against the soft skin of her neck before he pulled himself together, and sat upright again, his hands unfurling from their desperate grip upon her dress. Almost apologetic, his eyes sought those of his love, and he held her gaze for a long moment, grounding himself. He was here. She was here. The rest of it could be dealt with later.

Kailin felt the warmth of his breath against her neck again, and wasn't surprised when the muscles beneath her fingers grew taught. Stilling the soothing motion of her hands, she let Calanon slip through them as he pulled back, and they came to rest gently against his chest just at the curve of his shoulders.

"Numa...No..." she murmured, seeing the look in his eyes. One hand lifted to settle warm against his cheek, thumb brushing at the tension she saw in the normally smooth aspect of his temples, "il- ai' en' tanya, il- im lyenone of that, not between us,, melamin."

Her gaze held his for a long moment, but then a small line appeared between her brows and her eyes began shifting back and forth between his. Lips pressed together, she gave one last brush with her thumb before her hand fell to her knee and she looked toward the door, wondering where Ian was.

She was fairly certain, from the too-wide expanse of pupil staring back at her, and the fact that one was just slightly larger than the other, that Calanon had a concussion. It would fit with the matted blood she'd felt at the back of his neck - not to mention the bruising or how out of it he was - and she wanted to heal it, but could hear Sliucha's voice in her head telling her of the importance of triage, of making sure that she knew the severity of all of his injuries, especially with her still-limited capabilities as a mage. Still, she would watch him for any further signs of sleepiness or slurred speech, just in case.

If only she'd not been so timid, if she'd risked a little fatigue when he'd asked if she wanted to go on with the imbuement... He would have had the damned ring. He could have healed the worst of what had been done to him already, and maybe he wouldn't have been gone so long.

Her cheeks grew warm at the thought, and she told herself firmly that she didn't know what had happened. And until she did, it was absolute foolishness to imagine that her ring would have made any difference at all. But the bruises staring her in the face twisted the shard of guilt that had been planted in her belly all the same, and she was grateful when the door opened and Ian shuffled in, carefully holding a steaming basin of water, cloths draped over one forearm and what looked to be a new shirt over the other.

Pushing briskly to her feet, she went to relieve him of the fabrics before realizing that her own hands were dotted with blood. From Calanon's head? A look down at her own gown proved that she and the elf both had managed to do a fair job of leaving a path of crimson trails across the cream-colored fabric.

Nothing to be done about that now.

Her hands went to take the basin instead, and she met her brother's eyes through the steam with a quelling look. No animosity today. He held her gaze for a moment, then nodded his understanding. Whatever awkwardness remained between himself and the Sylrosian, he would shutter it for now.

"Help me get his shirt off, first..." she said quietly.

The water was place to the side of Calanon's chair, and Ian dropped the cloths onto a small side table above it, placing the clean shirt well enough away that it would stay clean. And as Kailin dipped her hands into the warm water to scrub them free of blood, Ian crouched in front of Calanon and began to deftly undo the buttons of his shirt - starting at the top - keeping his eyes averted as much possible for both of their sakes.

Kailin watched the two males as she dried her hands off, then dipped the same cloth into the water and wrung the water from it before standing and moving to Calanon's side. Silently passing the wet rag to Ian to hold, she took his place before her lover and continued with the few buttons that were left.

Her hands slid under the fabric, then, and pushed it out and over his shoulders, eyes cutting across his bared skin to look for any further injuries as she helped him out of the ruined shirt.

At her side, Ian's voice was quiet, his eyes wide as he took in Calanon's state, "I called the carriage around, Kael. Thought you might want to take him home," the siblings' eyes met for a moment at the weight he gave the word, "after we get him cleaned up a bit."

Kailin nodded, realizing it was exactly what she would have decided. She just hadn't gotten that far consciously, yet. "Thank you, Ian."

"Alright, love..." her voice was gentle, her touch even more so as she took the rag back from Ian and began to wash the blood from Calanon's healed arm, "I know your head probably hurts a lot right now, but I need to know where else you're injured. Especially anywhere it's not obvious."

He hated the worry he saw her on face. And that she had been worried these two brightenings past. It only added kindling to the smouldering anger he could feel in his gut, against those who had taken so much from his friend, and who put that expression on the face of his beloved.

Kailin had stood and moved to intercept Ian who had just stepped through the door, and Calanon watched warily as the two siblings shared some silent exchange. He had not the energy to interpret it, and let his eyes close just for a second. Only it must have been more than that because it was as he felt a slight tugging on his shirt that they snapped open.

" I can do it" His hands were quick to come up but then less dexterous than he expected, and he eventually let them fall away with a murmur of dissatisfaction, uncomfortable in the extreme with this arrangement. But it did not last long, and he managed to choke out a "Thank you" to Ian before the man had moved away. It was even more uncomfortable shrugging the shirt from his shoulder, and the elf grimaced at the pull in his shoulders and down his other arm, stiffening up now and reminding him of their previous mistreatment.

There was a darkening bruise across his abdomen, courtesy of a well planted boot, but the fair skin laid bare was otherwise relatively unblemished, barring the couple of scars Kailin was already familiar with. Still, Calanon shivered at the sudden cold, the contrast with the warm rag that Kailin was using to wipe away the blood from his arm raising goosebumps in its wake.

His head did hurt, more so than the dull aching of overtaxed muscles and tendons. But beyond his scraped up hands and wrists and that kick to the gut he'd received, the elf had escaped lightly in comparison to...

He didnt complete the thought, just shook his head ever so slightly.

"There is nothing else"

Glancing up at Ian, Calanon wondered exactly how awful he looked to put such an expression on the man's face and it was enough to raise a weak smile.

" Is it so terrible?" He was pale, and there were shadows beneath his eyes that only stood out more starkly because of it, but Cal at least knew that he had been lucky not to have come off worse. He tried to offer some reassurance then " Really..there is nothing else"

The desire to just curl up in the dark somewhere with his beloved and not move again for some time was only becoming more of an urgent requirement and he looked beseechingly at Kailin. " Can you fix it?"

Ian silently pulled his hands back as Calanon's eyes snapped open and he attempted to take over the task of getting his shirt off. But, watching as the elf's hands - usually so precise in their movements - missed their mark, shaking and clumsy, the young man's expression tightened around an upswelling of anger and concern. And when he was allowed to take over again, once Calanon gave up, his touch had gentled even further, though he tried desperately to keep the pity he felt from his face. His nod was tight, then, in response to the quiet thanks, and he moved away thinking it was better this way, less embarrassing than if he'd blubbered over the elf.

Taking his cues from Kailin, he stood to the side holding the warm cloth, peering over her shoulder at the ugly looking bruise mottling the otherwise smooth flesh. It held his attention such that he blinked as he felt a tug on the cloth he held, automatically clasping it more tightly until he looked down to meet Kailin's exasperated gaze.

"Oh... sorry," he said, releasing the cloth and taking the blood stained shirt in its place. Unsure what to do with it, he simply stared at it for along moment before he set about folding it at arms' length, taking care not to transfer any blood onto his own fine clothing.

Kailin, having noticed just a bit more than her brother, had bit down hard enough on the angry questions bubbling up to the surface that she was surprised her jaw hadn't begun to creak from the strain. She'd been unable to hold back a quiet curse, however, as it had become obvious she was hurting him when taking off his shirt, and she catalogued the fact that his shoulders had been strained along with the rest of the more obvious injuries.

Taking a moment to wish she'd had the foresight to get a fire going, she could do nothing about his shivering for the moment, not until she'd cleaned up the blood. But it made her a bit more hasty in her movements as she saw to his now-healed arm.

Kailin tried to be reassured when Calanon said there was nothing else, but what she was looking at already was bad enough, and it wasn't until he asked if she could fix it that she realized her time would really be better spent elsewhere. And, moreso, that she wanted desperately to take care of him on her own, to have Ian out of the room, and to be able to simply hold him and reassure herself that he was truly okay.

"Afraid so, old boy..." Ian's voice was not quite as light as he could have wished, giving answer to Calanon's attempt at lightheartedness. "You're looking a little rough around the edges. But I'm sure Kael will have you set right in no time."

Indeed, he'd set the soiled garmet on a corner of his desk before moving to touch his sister's shoulder gently. She looked up at him, pale and distracted, and he nodded her out of the way. "Take care of him, Sis. I can handle this."

Looking back to her love, Kailin let out a little breath, nodding before dropping the now bloody cloth back into the water and using another of the rags to dry her hands as she pushed to her feet. Ian folded himself into her place and, after wringing out the cloth, he began where Kailin had left off, doing his best to stay gentle as he continued to wash the elf free of blood.

On her feet again, Kailin had gently squeezed Calanon's shoulder, then taken a step or two back from the two males, folding her hands in front of her tightly to stem their slight shaking as she tried to find her focus. It was not easy, with her emotions so high and that dark, spreading bruise so vivid in her mind's eye.

Closing her eyes, she took in a deep breath, then let it out again. This she repeated a few more times before she felt her heartbeat settle just enough that it wasn't distracting her. Then she reached again for her focus, sought out the essence around her, and began to weave what was by now - thank all the Gods - second-nature to her. Healing.

She would start with his head, now that his arm had been taken care of and he was no longer actively bleeding. And as she opened her eyes and stepped toward them, her features were relaxed, far more serene than they'd been as she'd cleaned the blood away.

"Okay, melamin..." she said by way of warning, "let's start at the top and work our way down from there." And having said as much, she released the spell that should - if she'd done it correctly - bring Order to the chaos in his head, decreasing the swelling of the tissues, putting a stop to any areas that were bleeding, and heal any bruised tissues in his brain. The cuts and bruises on the outside of his skull would have to wait for the next spell she set.

It was not a situation he would have ever have imagined, and it was a sign of just how weary the elf was that he did not even voice a protest as Ian took Kailin's place. Rather he presented each wrist, where rope had rubbed away skin and left them raw, and his poor battered hands which had taken the brunt of his rather ungainly landings in that final flee across the rooftops.

His eyes stayed on Kailin for the most part though, head turning toward her as she had squeezed his shoulder, watching as she pushed past the worry visible on her face to try and find her focus. He was lucky that she managed it, calmed her frayed nerves enough to attune to the source of her magic, and the familiar spell came together quickly under her guidance.

Her lover looked up at her as she approached, and he inclined his head a little as she spoke, keen to be rid of the foggy thoughts and pounding headache that had set in more determinedly since he had stopped and taken breath. Calanon's eyes fluttered closed as she released the spell, as he felt the odd sensation of the order magic doing it's work. Such relief though, when it worked and he could think clearly again.

"Diola lle, lirimaer" The words were breathed out on a sigh as the worst of the pain was gone, and green eyes that were altogether revived opened to gaze up at Kailin. No longer clouded with pain nor confusion, there was still a worry there, for her, and some sorrow that would not be touched by the magic she wielded.

With the headache gone, it did mean Calanon was a little more aware of the other aches and pains that might have seemed less significant in comparison, and he winced as Ian wiped over a sore spot, turning his palm over to see what caused the sting, finding a graze there that he had been entirely unaware of before that point. His expression hardened as he caught sight of the rope burns.

" We were drugged" he blurted out, wanting suddenly to make it clear that he would not have been so easily subdued had that not been the case. Would not have awoken in such a vulnerable and helpless state. He swallowed at the sudden constriction in his throat before clarifying. " By the time I came round they'd tied us up pretty effectively"

A glance toward Kailin then, because she would know that should not have been enough to hold him, it should have been a simple thing to harness his own magics and free himself froma flimsy bit of rope. "There was a spellbreaker"

Ian's chocolate brown eyes, recently so full of castigation and holding little warmth for the elf before him, were now burning with a rage that was so different from the cool, distant anger he'd directed toward Calanon at the Club. The few times he glanced up from his task, his teeth ground together audibly, until he eventually kept his head bowed, taking care to wash the dirt out of the abrasions that marked Calanon's palms, occasionally pausing to rinse the cloth out.

The water in the basin was pink now, and as Kailin stepped in to watch the spell take effect, she glanced down at it with a brief but heartfelt frown. It did not last, though, for Calanon sighed out his thanks and she found a smile for him as his eyes opened to find hers. Clarity reigned in them again, and Kailin suddenly wondered whether confusion might have been a kinder state for the elf, at least for a little while.

An echoing sorrow pulled her expression taught for a moment, adding another layer to the concern that lay bare across her face. But then the elf winced, calling her attention down to where Ian still tended his hands. She did not like the look of them, wanted to throw healing spells at Calanon until there was no evidence left of what had been done to him, as if such a thing were possible.

And then he began to speak, seemed to feel the need to explain that it hadn't been his fault, and her expression crumpled before she could catch it, tears prickling hot and angry against her lashes. Fierce compassion lit her gaze as she came to a knee next to him, brushing Ian's hands away to take Calanon's in her own. Her fingers were gentle as they cupped his wrists, and she bent to lay a kiss against his torn skin.

Ian, all of a sudden feeling very much underfoot, stood abruptly and moved well away from the pair, the bloody cloth twisting between hands that ached for an alternate outlet. He hovered for a moment near his desk, staring down at it blankly, before striding to the door and slamming his way out into fresh air.

It fell shut silently behind him, at odds with the violence of his exit, and Kailin lifted her gaze to Calanon's. "Whatever happened, a'maelamin, it wasn't your fault." Her hands were shaking beneath his, and she felt like she couldn't catch a deep enough breath, the fear of what might have happened, of what could so easily have happened constricting her chest almost painfully.

A spellbreaker... he must have felt so impotent, and scared. Hands bound and his magic torn away from him. Kailin desperately wanted to know how he'd managed to escape, but bit her tongue savagely, knowing now was still not the time.

Instead, she forced air into her lungs and bowed her head over his hands, trying desperately to find focus again. To take the strands of Order and weave them once more into that familiar pattern, grateful her shaking hands would not get in her way.

"I'm so sorry, melamin." If the spell came together, she would deliver it with a gentle kiss to the base of one hand, "so sorry this was done to you." And then to the other, to let the magic climb over the bruises and scrapes and rope burns toward his shoulders, to ease the muscles there.

The mottled green-black crawling across his abdomen should almost certainly have come first, but Kailin couldn't stand to see the evidence of his capture anymore. And she wanted more than anything to get him dressed and get him home, where she could finish tending to him while he rested.

Pushing back to her feet, she grabbed both the fresh shirt and the tumbler of whiskey that Ian had poured initially, still sitting untouched on a nearby table. The glass was pressed into one of Calanon's hands before Kailin - trying for an air of brisk efficiency that was only somewhat ruined by the high color in her cheeks - unfolded the garment and shook it out.

"Can you stand?" Pale green eyes settled on him, waiting for him to down the alcohol, and clearly intending to assist him into the shirt. "There is a carriage waiting outside..."

Was he fit to move, or did she need to call Ian back in? Kailin watched him carefully, then, gaze falling to his belly as she wondered if she ought to take care of that bruise before attempting to move him home.

"Tell me what you need, love..." was she being selfish, that she wanted nothing more than to slide between the covers with him and hold him until the fear subsided?

Calanon was not quite sure what to make of the anger he saw simmering in Kailin’s brother as the man quietly got on with the task of sluicing gravel and dirt from the grazes that he had managed to accumulate. The elf watched him a little warily, and there was concern then as Ian slammed from the room, but it only hovered at the periphery of all the other emotions that were warring for dominance.

Cal dropped his head to look at where Kailin’s hands wrapped around his wrists, not quite able to agree with her statement. Some of what happened had certainly been his fault. The sound of that man’s fist meeting flesh and Rosie falling limp to the floor, that had been his fault. Not being able to prevent what had followed..his fault? He couldn’t think about it then, and closed his eyes briefly, as if he might unsee the memory that was playing out in his mind.

For Kailin, pulling the strands of her magic together was difficult in the face of her own emotions, but she managed it, the spell delivered with her words of regret, and the marks of his restraint were burnt away along with the lingering ache of muscles wrenched beyond their limits and the bloodied badges of his eventual escape.

He was silent in the face of it, watching the magic do its job, considering again how his own had been so completely useless when he had needed it most, and he almost jumped when Kailin pressed the glass of whiskey into his hand, knocking it back quickly this time so it burned a fiery path down his throat and bought some fleeting warmth where he still felt so cold.

“I can stand” With his head healed, it was less of an endeavour, and though he still felt battered and bruised, he was upright without too much drama. Following Kailin’s eyes, Calanon looked down to the dark bruise so vivid against his pale skin and brushed his fingertips lightly over the mark.
“ It doesn't really hurt” he remarked, feeling the heavy weight of concern that rested on him with his love’s gaze.

What did he need? He needed her, their desires mirroring each other’s perfectly in that moment. “Just you” the elf said quietly, reaching for the shirt she held, still feeling chilled down to his very bones. He wanted the reassurance of her touch then, her skin against his. Her warmth. To pretend for a little while that it had never happened.

Her breath went out of her at the words that so perfectly echoed her own desires just then, a faint smile touching her features. Kailin stepped forward to brush her lips over his carefully, no more than a whisper against the battered flesh she hadn't yet healed, leaving the shirt in his arms as she stepped back.

"Good then, let's get you home."

Kailin allowed Calanon to do most of the work of dressing himself, helping only to lay the collar flat so that the external part of his head injury didn't bleed all over this new one, and then taking charge of the row of buttons in front. Her hand gentled once over the bruise, brow furrowing again as she found it hard to believe that such a mark didn't hurt, then secured the last few inches of shirt. She wondered when the ache of it would set in, and whether Calanon was still in some shock, despite the healing she'd done.

Then she looked around them, and with a quick, "be right back," went to grab her cloak and satchel from her office before walking with him out the door. Ian was pacing in a very un-Ian-like manner, boots clacking on the cobbles outside, and his expression was momentarily bleak as he looked up at the pair as they exited, before it shut down again. He gave one somewhat jerky nod to the elf as he saw him upright, before stepping up to open the door to the carriage, silently offering the elf a hand up.

Ignoring her brother for the moment, Kailin made sure that Calanon was settled comfortably in the carriage, draping her cloak over his lap, before turning back to give Ian a quick hug. "Thank you, Ian. Can you--"

He cut her off, "I will clean up. Don't worry about it, Kael. I'll check in with you when I get home..." and here his gaze flashed past her to the elf, before settling against his sibling's again, some of his control slipping to allow his uncertainty through, "if that's alright?"

She rested a hand on his arm for a moment, squeezing, grateful that he'd put the awkwardness between himself and her love aside for now, but thinking the quick cease fire was not worth the price as she stepped up into the convenience, "tomorrow... check in tomorrow, okay?" For she did not wish to share her elf just now, not even for the sake of his friendship with her brother.

Ian nodded his understanding, gaze dropping away as she pulled the door closed and settled onto the seat. With a warning "hup!" from the driver, they were moving, and Kailin folded her hand around Calanon's, letting her body feed warmth to his where the bounds of the carriage pressed them close.

It was not a long ride, though it might have seemed so to Calanon, depending on his mood and level of fatigue. Kailin kept her silence, knowing that there was not much she needed to say, past the hand that held his, and what she wanted to say, what she wanted to ask could wait. The streets of the mercantile quarter blurred past, then came the clip clop of hooves dissipating into open space as they traveled across a bridge, and eventually they rolled to a stop in front of one of the smaller estates in Nobles Nest.

Stepping down first, Kailin regretted the fact that Calanon's first visit to her house would be in such a state. The one small mercy was that - after how things had fallen out with Ian - she had told her mom everything. Rather, everything that was hers to tell. And when Calanon had then gone missing, it was her mom that she had confided in, her mom who had been the steadying influence she'd needed. The woman had spent an entire marriage wondering whether the sea would return Kailin's father safely, after all, or whether this trip would see her standing at the docks, waiting for a ship that would never come in.

So Kailin was glad that it was her mother that opened the door to greet them rather than their stoic butler, lips pressed together in a very familiar way as she looked the elf over and took in his state, then shared a glance with her daughter, sparing only a small glance for the crimson that stained her cream colored gown.

"I will have Maya bring pracenda up to you, and make sure that Ian doesn't need help at the office tomorrow." Stepping back from the door, she made space for them to enter.

"Mom, this is Calanon," the words were simple, a formality, and she suspected more important for her lover than for either herself or the woman in the doorway. "Calanon, this is my mother, Imogen."

"Cormamin lindua ele lle eithel, tinu melar. My heart sings to see thee well, daughter lover" The woman's words of welcome were earnest, though it was clear to the Sylrosian that she had come to the study of his language much later than her daughter. Indeed, as Kailin smiled warmly at her mother for doing what was clearly her best, she smoothed out the grimace that wanted to form at the clunky wording Imogen had chosen to address Calanon by.

"To bed with you then..." Kailin's mother raised a brow at her own words, features taking on a slightly sterner cast as - not blushing even the slightest bit - she clarified that with, "you look as if you could use some sleep, young Master Siluvanade. Kailin will show you to one of our guest rooms."

"Thank you, mother..." Kailin said, words heartfelt as she leaned in to brush a kiss over her cheek as they passed. "I will see you in the morning."

"Be welcome here, Calanon... rest well," Imogen reached a hand out to settle gently on his forearm before she closed the door behind the couple. Then she moved to pull one of a few cords that were in a recessed box in the wall nearby, before watching them make their way down the hall toward the stairs, finally allowing her concern to pinch the well-worn paths at the corners of her eyes.

When they reached the guest suite closest to Kailin's rooms, a young maid was just exiting the chambers, only slightly out of breath from - presumably - having rushed to meet them. Stopping at the sight of them, she bobbed a quick curtsy, flicked a glance between the two of them, and then turned down the hall, calling over her shoulder, "I will be back with food, Miss, later."

And then they were in the room, and Kailin shut the door behind them with a soft sigh, grateful they had not run into any of her siblings. The splash and burble of falling water sounded from an open doorway, a fire had obviously just caught in the fireplace and was slowly starting to grow, and the bed was large and inviting. On a side table nearer to the hearth was an assortment of liquor and a few glasses, and the two chair flanking the fireplace looked comfortable enough. There was even a writing desk tucked into one corner, perhaps predictable with the types of guests that the Alyxanda's might expect to host.

"Bath first," Kailin said firmly for both their sakes, glad the choice had been made for them by her mother, nodding to the open door from which the sound of water came. "I'm going to collect some things from my rooms and will be here waiting when you finish."

Then, making sure he was okay with that, she squeezed the hand she had yet to let go of, before releasing it to head back out the door, leaving him see to himself. She was waiting, as promised, when he'd finished the bath, having changed out of her own blood-stained clothes.

Kailin had taken one of the chairs close to the now healthy fire, legs curled under her as she sketched idly. She was dressed as he'd seen her before, though perhaps not since winter, in a pair of leggings and a thigh length button down shirt. It had been her preferred outfit when working in her studio in Jaedaxia.

Her gaze lifted to Calanon as her motions stilled, and there was a brief flare of some strong emotion... relief? as her gaze met his, "feeling any better?" She set down the sketch pad, pushing to her feet to approach him and look him over. Had his head started to bleed again, as she'd been worrying?

With the healing that Kailin had done meaning less of his focus was being drawn by the sensation of pain, Calanon could more appreciate the weariness that made his limbs feel heavy and his thoughts slow. It felt like an almighty effort to shrug on the new shirt, only made possible by the fact that it was a step that needed to be taken before he would to move on, to somewhere they could just hole up together and forget about it.

Once outside, he shivered a little at the bite of the wind, glancing at Ian and then the carriage, awkwardly accepting the offer of help even though he felt he could have managed, just to show willing. Once within, he went to lean his head back against the cushioned seat, only to remember at the last moment that it was still matted with blood. He slumped sideways against the window instead, finding it easier not to look at the expression he had glimpsed on Ian’s face, and though his fingers tightened around Kailin’s when he felt her sit beside him, he was quiet as the carriage jerked into motion, letting his eyes drift closed as it fell into a rhythmic sway.

He hadn’t quite succumbed to sleep though, and it was when they were still moving after he thought they should have stopped that he opened his eyes, not recongnising the buildings they were passing, and turning to Kailin in confusion. “ Where are we going?” He looked once more out of the window, sitting forward as a slightly panicked expression crept over his features. Then more sharply “ Kailin, where are we going?”

Sharp, because Calanon thought he knew where they were going as the landscape shifted, the houses they passed becoming grander, and he felt altogether unprepared. So when the carriage came to a halt, he was almost paler than when he had staggered in through the door earlier that afternoon. Shooting a disbelieving look at his love, it was only the bone deep exhaustion that he felt preventing him flat out refusing to go in. Still, he was holding on to Kailin’s hand for dear life as they approached her family home, and it was her momentum that kept him moving when the door swung open.

For there was who he could only presume was Kailin’s Mother. There was a brief recognition there, but then they were inside, and Calanon was glancing between Kailin and the older woman, touched by her attempt to speak his language, but choosing not to respond in kind, lest it be too far a leap.

“ Thank you, Arwen en amin. Indeed it is my heart that is gladdened to be able to finally meet you.” Some effort to construct an appropriate response, he wanted to apologise for the state he was presenting himself in, to be charming and polite, but it was somehow a little beyond him right then.

And the elf only became further tongue tied at the entirely unflinching clarification Mdm Alyxanda felt it necessary to bestow regarding which bed he would be in and what he would be doing in it. Feeling every inch the ‘young’ Master Siluvanade despite the many eras he could claim over Kailin’s Mother, Calanon could only nod his agreement, some slight colour returning at last to the pallor he had been wearing, only at the tips of his pointed ears and cresting on each sharp cheekbone.

It was no small relief then when Kailin steered him up the stairs and into what he assumed was the aforemention guest room, the sound of the door clicking shut behind them a balm to his paper thin nerves. He was listing toward the bed already when his lover’s brisk “ Bath First” tore him away, and he wearily turned toward the room where the thing already lay in wait.

“Of course. How did I think there could ever not be a bath?”

It was feeble, but an attempt at humour in what had been a bleak and brittle reunion between them, and Calanon held on to Kailin’s hand a beat longer than was needed, trying to convey his gratitude without words, which seemed such an effort still.

Despite the fatigue that settled heavy on him in the heat and steam, the elf was glad of the bath in the end. There were muscles he didn’t know that he had that the panicked escape across the rooftop had taxed, and he was grateful for a few moments to himself. Emerging a little while later, he glanced almost shyly at Kailin where she sat by the fire, feeling suddenly out of place, out of sorts here in her family home.

He hadn’t wanted to put his breeches back on for they were scuffed and dirty, so it was only a towel wrapped around his hips that he wore, the rest of his things – and that donated shirt- laying haphazardly on the tiled floor of the bathroom.

“I’m tired” Calanon answered honestly as she approached, a sad sort of smile at seeing her in the clothes so tied with Jaedaxia. And more vividly with that terrible argument. He blinked that thought away, instead opening his arms to receive her, to hold her close as he wanted to and not let go. Only… the bed looked so soft and inviting. Wary of her Mother’s warning, his eyes lifted briefly to the door before he tried to phrase his request carefully.

“ Can we just..will you lie with me a while?”
