[PA] Secret Assignations and Unplanned Revelations

Timestamp: Autumn Era XXIV

There was a certain amount of trepidation as the elf approached Club Marksman. It had, after all, been the venue that played host to some of the less than finer moments in his history with Kailin, and they were not so distant that the memories had faded at all. But then, time perhaps to replace them with better ones? Things were undeniably different now, and he wore that knowledge like armour as he paused briefly upon seeing his old doorman friend, trying very hard not to recall in too much detail the fact that Gorge, was it? had escorted him quite firmly back to the Alyxanda rooms upon his last stay.

Some relief then, that the man was far too professional to let any sign he recounted it at all play across his face as he greeted the elf politely, and Calanon was shown back to the same rooms without further ado. Catching the man as he turned to leave, the elf asked him if he might be able to send word to Kailin’s office that their appointment still stood. It was deliberately vague, for –understandably- his beloved wanted to manage the process of introducing him into the family gently. And so they snuck around like teenagers for now, trying to avoid detection. Gorge was too gracious to remark on this as well, and Calanon was glad of it.

As the doorman closed the door and the elf was left alone in the familiar space, he wished that there was no need for reticence in meeting Kailin’s family, but alas it was not so. The rather jagged demise of their relationship – though they had not named it such- in Spring had left its mark, as had the unfortunate events of his first visit to the City of Queens in the Summer. So yes, those waters would need to be navigated with care, when the time was right.

For now though, he had the afternoon and darkening stretching ahead of him with Kailin, and he felt the thrill of anticipation at the thought of it. Though they were not new to each other there was the flush of exuberance between them still, and Calanon could admit, it was not lessened by the fact that their time together was snatched where they could take it. And they were snatching almost a whole day and night right now.

Impatient then for his love’s arrival, the elf wandered about the rooms, trying to estimate how long it would take for the message to get across town to Kailin and for her to then get to him. It felt like too long. So he busied himself arranging for the bath to be filled- because gods, his beloved had a thing about baths-and then ordering and starting on a rather good bottle of red. She would like that too.

He had just upended a small vial of some scented something or other into the now full tub, and when his oliy fingers reached for his wine glass again, he managed to upend most of that over his shirt. Which was unfortunate as it was nice wine he mused, as he discarded the now soiled garment, but not all that inconvenient as he was hoping it would have been removed sooner or later anyway.

Now where was Kailin?

True to his word, Gorge sent a runner to the warehouse and its attached office, which - as it happened - was no more than a quick, if brisk walk in the directions of the docks. The problem was, perhaps, that the note he had scrawled had been somewhat too subtly addressed.

M. Alyxanda,

I am to inform you that your appointment still stands, and is awaiting you in your rooms.

Best Regards,

Gorge

So that when it arrived and fell into Ian's hands, he made the rather understandable assumption that the cryptic message was for himself, as his sister had already left for the brightening. Presumably, Kailin would spend another long afternoon in the Gut, as was her usual practice on the days when their schedule allowed.

As it was his lunch hour, Ian took the note in hand and decided that he might as well see what this was all about. He could get a proper lunch at the club while he was at it.

*****

Kailin was humming, quietly, but humming all the same as she made her very roundabout way toward the Club. She'd decided she had time to do some shopping on her way to meet up with Calanon, and felt almost domestic with the basket looped over her arm, perusing goods for their little rendezvous. Almost domestic. Except for the fact that they were running around like young people yet again, acting foolish and sneaking whatever hours together they could without being caught.

All of which was rather exciting, of course, but also her fault, and weighing on her. She paused, staring somewhat absently at the confections laid out before her as she wondered again whether she shouldn't just tell her family about Calanon. It would make things easier, eventually, and with their upcoming trip to Ziel Aerca, seemed the proper thing to do.

Indeed, come to think of it--

Startled as someone jostled her, she colored and quickly selected a few of the treats as if she'd come to a sudden decision, then looked around to see whether - or rather which - familiar faces might have been around to notice her lapse. Nodding politely at a few, she took the small wrapped bundle, paid slightly more than they were worth, and moved off to find her favorite cheesemonger.

Back out in the still warm autumn sunshine, with the smell of salt in the air that told her she was home, Kailin allowed herself to turn back to her ruminations. To point, she was shocked that no one from the ship that had carried her and Calanon to Demios had spilled the secret to any of her family members. Yet. It would happen, if it truly hadn't already. Sailors loved gossip every bit as much as the next person, and a secret romance undertaken by the woman running the business was just too good to keep quiet. And no matter that she had the power to make their lives hell for it.

Not that she would ever do so, of course. Kailin smirked, shaking her head at herself, and determined that she would face the music and tell her family. Just as soon as she returned from Moonstone. Probably.

As the bell rang to announce her entrance into the fragrant interior of the cheese shop, all she could think of, though, was Ian.

For Ian's sake, she told herself for the hundredth time, the news would keep just a little longer.

*****

Stepping into Markalin's Men, Ian allowed Felippe to take his jacket, happy to be rid of the burden for a while. The suns might be shining, but he had been quite sure he'd felt the bite of autumn in the air, and he always took care to dress for the weather. Nor could he be blamed for feeling the need to take extra care with his clothing since a certain unfortunate event early in the summer.

His friends had finally stopped teasing him about it, but they were not nearly as merciless as his cousin Kerric, who'd been most intemperate in his enjoyment of Ian's humiliation. Thus he'd taken care to avoid the club when he was not assured firstly of his cousin's absence, and secondly of his friends' presence.

Still, as he unlooped the scarf from about his neck and left it hanging loosely about his collar, steps carrying him toward his rooms - and no sign of Gorge anywhere to ask who had asked him to send the note and why they would be meeting in his rooms - he wondered whether he'd forgotten an appointment. It would be right out of character, but then, it was also unusual for him to receive reminder notes, so perhaps his forgetfulness had been presumed for some reason.

He took a moment to peer into one of the mirrors that dotted the hallway, brushing thick waves of dark hair back into place, adjusting his cravat, and resettling the scarf so that it fell perfectly, before finishing the walk to his rooms.

Did he knock? Did he not?

Settling for something between the two (they were his rooms after all), he gave one sharp warning rap on the door before twisting the handle and sticking his head and shoulders into the room, curiosity written across his handsome face as he looked around the empty space for his mysterious companion.

"Hello?" He'd started out the word strongly enough as he moved further inside, closing the door softly behind him, but the end of it faltered as the scent of bath oils filled his nose. It occurred to him quite suddenly that he should have sought out Gorge, that curiosity was always getting his elder sister into trouble, and he ought really to have known better. Because surely, surely there had been a mix up.

In fact, best go find Gorge now, before this became yet another unfortunate incident involving the foolish young Ian Alyxanda. Thus spurred by bitter thoughts and the desire to avoid any further scandal, he took a step backward and had managed to grasp the handle to make a quick exit when movement caught his eye.

He didn't want to see who it was. He truly didn't.

But the naked abdomen and chest that had caught his attention held it, held it even as he knew it shouldn't. And with a sinking feeling, all at odds with the rising anger that mottled his cheeks as his gaze slid slowly up that smooth expanse, recognition dawned on his face. Horrified recognition.

"You?" Had the elf returned, for him? It made no sense. And he knew, without a shadow of doubt, that he did not have a prearranged appointment with his sister's former lover.

"What do you want?" Half naked, smelling of bath oils, Ian could not understand why the elf had called him here. Was this... oh gods! His cheeks flushed scarlet as his gaze dropped to the elf's abdomen again, entirely without his permission. Picking a point on the wall somewhere past the elf's left shoulder, he fixed his eyes on it. Was this a seduction?

Calanon's ears had pricked at the sound of the single knock, and if his pace had increased somewhat in anticipation of greeting his beloved then he would not make excuses for it. His smile was wide then as he wove his way around the bed and out into the living area, just as a decidedly masculine voice called out.

Thinking it possibly Gorge, the elf's smile dimmed a little and he blew out a sigh at the continued wait. Had the message been sent ?he wondered. " Is all well.......?"

The question tailed off into nothing as Cal emerged to find not Gorge, as he had expected, but an uncomfortably familiar male lingering with hand on door handle as if he weren't sure if he were coming or going. The elf froze in his tracks, the contents of wine glasses he had snatched up on his way past sloshing dangerously. Oh what the feth

He had not seen Ian since that final day at the stables before he had skipped town, and then they had barely been speaking. And as wide and startled green eyes took in the tense expression - and rather unkind salutation if he were being honest- from his lover's brother it became clear that Ian Alyxanda was not delighted to see him then either.

" ...Ian..heru en amin. Mae govannen" Calanon fumbled out a greeting, even as his mind raced through what was going on. Whatever reason Ian had for being here, he himself needed an explanantion, and he could not for the life of him come up with one that wasn't going to lift the lid on his renewed relationship with Kailin.

He did not miss either the quick fall of Ian'e eyes to his naked torso, and it was a rather pertinent reminder of how close they had strayed to..well, to things that might have been difficult to take back, and Cal felt the tell tale heat of a flush creep over his face.

Think! What possible explanation could he have for being there, half dressed as he was, clutching two glasses of wine and reeking of whatever oily stuff he'd thrown into the waiting bath. His mind went blank.

"...I..uh..well."
Calanon grasped for something to say. "Here have some wine" And with that he took the few strides it required to hand a glass to Ian, before taking a healthy gulp of his own drink as he retreated a little to consider his options. Where the fething hell was Kailin? A hand raked back through his hair before the elf opened his mouth again.

" You are here for business?" he chanced. It was awkward enough as it stood, but if there was likely to be anyone else arriving then Calanon would rather know of it, and his eyes cast around for his shirt as he considered quite how obvious all of this looked. And with all chance of protecting the new fledgling love he had found with Kailin lost, the elf sighed.

" I'm sorry, Ian, if this is a shock to you. I would rather this had been done more subtly"

Ian only just looked away from the bit of wall he'd chosen in time to catch the glass that Calanon shoved at him. Red liquid sloshed over onto his hand and spread rapidly down it to stain his cuff crimson around the edge.

"Blast, man!" Without regard for the furnishings about - or the other male in the room - he switched hands deftly and shook the wet one with a rough snap, sending a few big fat droplets of the stuff to land squarely on Calanon's unclothed form. Horror at the sight of wine snaking its way down the smooth elven skin widened his eyes and brought a fresh bloom of color to his face. It was a blush that was, likely, entirely too reminiscent of his sibling's for Calanon's comfort.

Ian lifted his still wet hand to rake it through freshly touseled hair at almost the exact moment the elf did, and he halted mid motion, staring again. Then, not knowing what else to do, he shoved his hand into his pocket and took a gulp of the wine, realizing that it was a mistake the moment it hit is tongue. This was not the time to be getting tipsy.

At Calanon's question of business, though, Ian's eyes flashed up to his, narrowed in a combination of suspicion and anger. He would have taken a step back, but the door was close enough that he'd only run into it and look like a fool. Instead, he eyed the coffee table between himself and the elf, and considered whether he was brave enough to move close enough to set his glass down. Then he decided that the temptation to drink was safer than increasing his proximity to the seducer, and held his ground.

It was a conclusion that was borne out in the next instant, as Calanon apologized for his lack of subtlety. It shocked Ian so much that he guffawed, and only barely managed not to spill more wine.

Once more, he lifted a his free hand to run it through his hair, shaking his head with what felt rather too much like grudging admiration, though it was tinged with a healthy dose of indignation.

"'More subtly'?" He ground his teeth together, taking a couple steps into the room toward his sister's former lover before he realized it and stopped himself.

"Gods' teeth, Calanon. A shirt would suffice. Perhaps waiting to open the wine until we'd at least spoken." His voice grew louder as his thoughts slid closer to indignation than admiration,"Maybe a fething letter would have been a good start, rather than a secretive invitation sent through Gorge of all people. I had no idea you..." he cleared his throat, uncomfortable in his navigation of this awkward situation.

"That is, I-- Did you actually run a bath?" He interrupted himself, thoughts tumbling together as the scent of Calanon's oils assaulted him again, stronger now that he was closer to the elf.

"Nevermind, nevermind," gesturing with the glass, he almost lost more of the liquid over the rim, and heaved a sigh as he moved to set it down on the table, holding a hand up to forestall anything Calanon might wish to say until he'd bloody well finished. Straightening up, he wiped his slightly damp palms on his scarf, hiding the motion as he made as if to settle it back into place. Then he brushed his his hair back from his eyes and peered over at the male, lips pinched tight with apologetic regret.

"However you left things with my sister, with Kailin, and however flattered I am by your regard, this cannot be, Calanon." He pronounced each of the words with extra care, finding in himself the strength to not flinch away from those beautiful green eyes. They always made him think of the leaves of the forest, dappled and shining with sunslight.

Brown eyes softened then, as his dark brows pinched together, "surely you understand that."

Indeed, as it had in summer, looking upon Ian knowing he was Kailin's brother, made Calanon wonder how he had ever missed it. There was so much similarity when one knew to look for it, a fact he noticed when Ian flushed almost as prettily as Kailin did after splattering the elf with wine.

Better than vomit at least. The elf glanced down at the drops of red, sighing at yet more wastage of what really was a nice wine. But then, as he put some distance between he and his lover's brother, he focused on the fact that really he had more to be worrying about. And Ian did not seem to be reacting to the news well, in fact, he seemed angry, and Calanon grit his teeth, wishing that Kailin had been the one to tell him. She would have done it with much more tact he was sure. Although, perhaps he should be grateful Ian had not arrived a little later and walked in on... Where WAS Kailin?

It was only when Ian mentioned Gorge that the elf began to piece together what had happened, and he was simultaneously mortified and amused. That the man thought he was waiting here for him..? He needed to spare both their blushes and correct the misapprehension sooner rather than later. "I'm sorry Ian, but.."

There was not enough pause in the other man's speech for the elf to complete his sentence, and he turned to look toward the bedroom, where indeed a bath lay in wait beyond, but not for Ian. " No. Well yes but.."

Once again, Calanon trailed off, feeling more and more flustered with every moment. He didn't want Ian to get any further, but he could feel it coming, and could only brace himself, meeting the eyes of the other man with a growing sense of inevitable dread. Oddly detached, as if he was watching this trainwreck from above, Cal wondered why the rejection still stung. He simply stared at the man for a few long moments, unblinking green, until he managed to pull it together enough to finally speak.

" I do understand, Ian. More than I think you realise " Gods. He felt hot all of a sudden and found himself quite unable to hold the gentle -pitying?- gaze of the other for any longer. " I'm not...this isn't.."" He scrambled to redeem himself"I'm waiting for your sister!"

If Calanon could have had the ground swallow him up right then he likely would have done. This was not how he would have chosen to reacquaint himself with Kailin's brother. Arms folded a little defensively now, he dragged his eyes back to see how this revelation was being taken.

"I'm really very sorry...I sent the note for Kailin. Clearly, you must have received it instead"

That rather good wine was chucked back with less reverence than it deserved then, as Cal felt he needed bolstering somewhat. It wasn't everyday one's attempt at a seduction was so resolutely thrown back in one's face, even if it was an entirely unintended attempt at seduction. " I expect she will be here soon" he tagged on a little glumly, for she was coming too late to spare either of their blushes or his ego.

"Oh..." it was a rather weak sound of surprise that Ian made as Calanon corrected his misunderstanding of the situation.

And if it were merely the strength and number of wishes that brought about manifestation on the physical plane, a hole most certainly would have opened beneath the two males, swallowing them whole before either died of embarrassment. With his warm brown eyes dancing around the room to land anywhere but on the elf before him, Ian felt the flush that had been so present on his features climbing up to the very tips of ears and down below his perfectly settled cravat.

He cleared his throat, then reached to take his glass of wine back from the table. He was halfway through a very deep sip when he realized it was, of course, Kailin's wine that he was drinking. The smooth taste soured on his tongue as he swallowed, lowering the glass to hold it awkwardly against his torso.

It was not at all lost on him, though he wished it were, that the disappointment he felt at Calanon's correction far outweighed his relief.

"Oh. Well that's good, then." But then as his own words settled between them, and what they implied, he blanched, and looked even more uncomfortable, as if that were possible. Slowly, he settled himself on the arm of the couch nearby and when he looked at Calanon his gaze was tight.

"This is what? A secret rendezvous? Or are you..." seducing her, too? He let the sentence trail off in a question, though, realizing that the anger he suddenly felt was more properly directed at his sister than it was at Calanon.

"Does Kailin know... about all this?" The gesture Ian made encompassed everything from Calanon's half-naked form to the bath that was scenting the air to the wine in their hands. He was fiercely protective of his sister, and she'd been so happy again, and Ian was glad of it. So glad. But he couldn't understand why would she risk it again to meet up with this philandering elf, and no matter how close they had once been.

"She's happy, Calanon. Really happy again..." and he stood again abruptly, features closing down until he wore a mask of polite apology. "No, I really think you had better go now, before anything worse than this foolishness happens." And at that statement, he gestured between them, referencing the recent misunderstanding.

"I'll make your apologies to Kailin for you." And with that he began to make his way back to the door, intent on opening it and ushering the elf back out of their lives before Kailin even knew what had happened.

Calanon fervently hoped his own discomfort was not as easy to read on his face as Ian's was, as he watched the man blush so furiously that the elf chanced he could feel the heat of it from where he stood. Still he blew out a breath, feeling if at least some of the tension had fallen out of the situation, now Ian understood he was not trying to entice him into...well..anything really.

He was embarrassed, not least because had Ian not been Kailin's brother, then he would not have been trying to ignore the fact that he really was very attractive. It was awkward. Casting his eyes about him, he located the discarded wine-stained shirt, and taking the few steps required to reach it, he pulled it on regardless. It was better.

Glancing back up to the other male, the elf nodded in agreement, for it was indeed good that he had not been trying to seduce his lover's brother. Even he could see that. But when he caught sight of Ian's face, his brow furrowed, for there was still tension there, an almost accusatory look in his eyes. Calanon straightened as the questions came quickly, and he was confused. Had he not just explained this?

"She knows I am here, Ian." he repeated, peering at the human, wondering if he was being deliberately obtuse. " I would hardly be waiting on the offchance she might stop by. You got the message didn't you?"

Kailin's brother clearly did not notice the softening of the elf's features when he spoke of his sister's happiness, but it was there non the less. Cal was not so arrogant as to think it might be solely down to the reforged relationship they shared, but perhaps just a little? The thought warmed him. Which was why it he was so surprise at the sudden shift in Ian's demeanour.

"Are you asking me to leave?" he asked, taken aback. It took only a moment for the being surprised to slide into being offended, and the elf fixed Ian with a rather hard stare as the man walked toward the door.

He did not follow, but planted his feet rather stubbornly. " The only way that will be happening is if your sister bids it herself" Which he was quite sure she would not

In truth, he was rather thrown by the unfriendly vibes he was getting from Ian now. What had he done? Was the man angry because he wasn't trying to seduce him?! He thought maybe he should clarify.

" Ian...if things were different.." Well, it would still be awkward as feth now. " I cannot deny I am drawn to you. But it is as you said , remember? It cannot be. Do not let it sit badly between us"

"Yes... I am asking you to leave, for Kailin's sake." Ian said, his voice perfectly controlled and reasonable.

The dark haired lad - having made it back to the door - wrapped his hand around the doorknob. It was not lost on him that the elf was not moving, though, and his frown deepened as he kept his gaze on Cal, eyes narrowing fractionally at his declaration that he would only leave if told to do so by Kailin.

He'd opened his mouth to try another tack when Cal went on, and Ian listened with only growing horror, and not just a touch of affront. He closed his mouth, unable to flush any more deeply than he already was, and then found his jaw hanging open once again as the elf blatantly spoke of his attraction and seemed to imply that Ian was somehow getting rid of him because he himself was not the object of Cal's affection?

"My Lord," it was Ian's most stiff and formal voice he was using now, each word clipped and tight, and he drew himself up rigidly at the door, splotches of white now dotting his familiar (and reddened) features, "you may chalk whatever attraction fell between us up to the confusion and delirium your drugs imposed on me. If you cannot let go of your desire for me, then it is all the more reason for you to leave. Now." A command, then.

"But as for Kailin... if she has not already told you, then I am most happy to inform you of the fact that she is, once again, in close contact with my former brother-in-law. He," a thick dose of added emphasis to the word, "is the source of this new happiness, and I believe it to be only a matter of time before they announce the renewal of the vows they pledged to one another."

"You may rest assured that Kailin is well taken care of by her family, sir," one brow cocked on the word, and he fumbled for a moment, realizing that it was a dig too far, given what little he knew of the elf's own losses. The overstep cracked his icy exterior then, and he blew out a breath.

"Please just go, Cal, before you ruin this for her." Ian said, a note of pleading entering his tone, softening the tension around the honey-brown eyes that remained fixed on the elf as he pulled the door open to reveal the woman herself standing just outside.

Kailin was flushed and grinning as the door opened just as she stepped up to it, though as she took in the scene in her usual quick and detailed way, a line dug a divide between her eyebrows. Looking from Calanon to her brother and back, she was quite obviously confused as to what was going on, and her pale green eyes bounced from wine glass to wine glass before settling on the shirt that sat stained and open on her elf's lithe frame. One dark brow arched high as her gaze drew upward from there to meet his, clearly asking for an explanation.

It didn't take long for Cal to realise that he might have taken the wrong approach in trying to build bridges with Ian. For though it was well intentioned, it seemed only to fan the flames of whatever fire was driving the man, and the elf found himself drawing himself taller and taking a deep breath at the rigidly formal manner in which the human spoke on.

That breath was expelled in a scoff, for whilst he had not dwelt on it afterwards for obvious reasons, Calanon was under no illusion as to how Ian's 'attraction' had fallen between them. One eyebrow arched skeptically, and the elf was hard pressed not to voice his surprise that the drugs Adyn had supplied had only seemed to have that particular side effect on Ian. But he bit his tongue, reminding himself that this was Kailin's brother, that he wanted to be accepted by her family, and that embarrassing the man further would not help his cause.

It was a generosity that he did not feel mere moments later as Ian seemed to delight in what he had to deliver next, and it shocked the elf enough that he did not have an immediate retort.

Orrian? Calanon's expression slackened a little and his gaze fell away as he tried to make sense of what he was being told, for it didn't fall into line with anything that he believed. But Ian seemed so sure of himself, and Cal knew he and Kailin were close. She would not.... They had talked of New Coldmoon when she had returned. And for any of what Ian was saying to be true would mean that everything since had been a fallacy. He didn't believe it- could not believe it. Aware suddenly that he was not schooling his features as he ought, the elf looked back up just in time to hear loud and clear the emphasis put on the word family.

There was the briefest flicker of something that betrayed the nerve that might have been struck, before his features rearranged themselves into an impassive set, only the tense line of his jaw giving any hint of the aggravation that was building.

"I see" Calanon met Ian's eyes only briefly, and there was no softness in his gaze at all, the usual warm green cold and unyielding. More hard slate that living forest. "Before I ruin it for her"

He was wavering between standing his ground, telling Ian he had got things quite wrong, which was what his head was telling him to do, and just leaving, giving the sliver of unease that had found its way into his chest what it wanted. So when Ian pulled open the door to reveal Kailin, and her confused gaze settled upon his face, she would see some conflicting emotion there. Relief, exasperation...hurt?

" Perfect timing, lirimaer" The usually lilting tones were shortened, sharper in their delivery, and Calanon turned abruptly to cross the room, refilling his glass and then tipping his head back to take several long swallows, not rushing, before he turned back to the doorway where the two siblings stood.

"It's okay. I will be out of your hair shortly" he said, flashing a small, tight smile at the male. " Ian here has just been bringing me up to date with developments between Port Alyxandrya and New Coldmoon" The elf switched his focus to Kailin then, and much as he hated it, the question slipped out in elvish before he could stop it

. "Naa eller ner im lle ar' Orrian lle caela nyare?" Is there more between you and Orrian than you have told?

As Ian started visibly and whipped his head around to see who Cal was addressing, Kailin's frown deepened at Calanon's greeting, his usual endearment hitting her as a jab rather than the caress she's been primed to expect. Her gaze was glued to his back as he turned away to refill his wine, lingering there as she tried to figure out what in Aeternia had happened, before shifting abruptly to Ian and widening in an expressive demand for an explanation.

For his part, Ian had not been expecting his sister to be at the door. He'd fully intended to have the elf off and away before her arrival, and now found himself flushed (for a very different reason than moments previous) and feeling rather defensive, really.

"Kailin--" was all he managed to get out before Cal turned back and addressed himself to Ian once more. The lad folded his arms - being careful of the wine glass he still held - and leaned against the door, his jaw clenching below a look of triumph that flashed as the elf made his intention to leave clear to all.

There. That was all he wanted. Then he and Kailin could have a proper chat about what she thought she was doing here, with him.

Except that wasn't all. Ian knew only enough elvish to be polite with Kailin's in-laws, and not enough to catch much more than Orrian's name in this situation, but he got the gist of it.

Kailin, having gotten far more than the gist of Calanon's question, still looked entirely confused. "More?" She ventured, as she stepped in through the doorway, taking the door in hand and physically pulling it away from where Ian rested on it to push it closed. Neither she nor Ian needed anyone eavesdropping on their personal business, not even here at the Club where such discreet matters were simply to be expected.

Perhaps she did not know what had happened, but it was clear to her that something had, and given the history between the three of them, no one was leaving until this ridiculous tension had been sorted out. Though, however she thought she'd break the news of her relationship to Ian, it was not whatever this was.

Reaching out as she passed by him, Kailin took the glass of wine out of Ian's dangling grasp, moving to take a seat on the couch and gesturing Ian into one of the nearby chairs while patting the spot next to herself for Calanon to take. She felt almost sure they could manage to talk like adults.

"Melamin," she said to Calanon, with less of a soothing tone and more of a slight bite to the word, "you know all there is to know of what is between myself and Orrian."

And now pale green eyes swung to Ian, who would only sit if and when Calanon left. He hadn't missed her use of the word melamin, either, and now looked to be attempting to form thunderheads in the space between himself and his sister.

"What did you tell him, Ian?"

"What do you mean what did I tell him? Nothing that isn't true, Kailin. You've been happier ever since you returned from New Coldmoon, and we've all noticed it. The letters back and forth with Orrian. The packages. You've been working on paintings, too, Kael. Did you seriously think we wouldn't figure out what was going on?" And now he tried to smile, leaning toward her a bit, doing his best to ignore the elf for the moment.

"And we're happy for you. You told me that Ry was back to his old self," his gaze flickered to Cal briefly, lips pinching as he replayed Kailin saying the word melamin to him just now. "Why would you risk it for another fling with him?" Ian didn't say it, but both the 'after what he did to you' and the 'after what he did to me' were heavily implied in the castigation held in the dark brown of his eyes.

Kailin - half amused and half irritated - took a leisurely sip of the wine left in her brother's wine glass, wondering now whether Ian had, perhaps, thrown wine onto Calanon in his obvious anger. It would be terribly out of character for her brother, usually so staid and in control. But Calanon had broken through his defenses once, and she knew Ian had yet to forgive him for it.

"Before I went to New Coldmoon, I went to Daltina... you remember?" Leaning back against the couch, Kailin looked to Calanon with an amused arch of her brow and a fond smile, "I ran into Calanon there, Ian, rather fortuitously. And if I came back from New Coldmoon a happier person," she was quite sure they all knew what an understatement that was, "you have him to thank for it."

"But Orrian--"

"Will always be someone I love. That is true enough." She flicked a glance up at Calanon before continuing to address Ian, "And I was, and am, relieved that he is no longer the bitter, angry man that I divorced."

"But he does not have my heart, Ian," and now she looked up to Calanon again, not trying to hide the warmth that filled her gaze as she smiled at the elf, beautiful even disheveled and in a wine-stained shirt.

"Ma tanya nyara lle mani lle anta sint, cormamin?Does that answer your question, my heart?"

Ian sat rather abruptly in the chair he'd been commanded into earlier, and rubbed both hands on his face, confusion stealing over his proud features.

"So you..." he swallowed, and looked between Cal and his sister, "you're what? Together?"

The elf was feeling rather as if his feet had been swept from underneath him, and he needed that moment, walking away from the siblings, drinking that wine and not appreciating it at all, to gather himself. With Ian's words ringing in his ears, he turned back to them, wanting Kailin to smooth this all over but feeling the edge of unease that there could be truth in what her brother had said.

He did not let himself think on it, for it made his heart hurt and he had no wish to be so vulnerable in front of Ian, who already seemed to be gloating. Ignoring him, Calanon looked to his love, and whilst the elf moved closer, he did not sit either, needing her to refute what he had been told. Instead, he stood at the back of the sofa, one hand clutching his wine, the other mindlessly tracing patterns on the fabric. There was a quick glance up at Kailin, as he heard the disapproval that bled through into the endearment as she addressed him, but her words were not enough to soothe the uncertainty that Ian had sewn and the question remained in his eyes even after her assurances.

And so Ian glared at Kailin, and Calanon glared at Ian, his unhappiness only growing as the man went on, adding depth to his telling this time, detail that seemed to underscore his story. Letters? Packages? That was news to him.

The elf chewed on the inside of his cheek, his eyes narrowing at the rather derogatory inflection that the male used whilst speaking of him as if he were not standing right there, as well as what he said. Fling, was it? His eyes found Kailin then, as he wondered if this was how she had described what they had shared in Winter, wondered again how much Ian knew. There was certainly an animosity he had not expected…

But he could not dwell on it for long, for here was what he wanted to hear, here was Kailin's truth. He realised he was holding his breath.

Of course, it made sense, all of what she said, and Calanon felt the first prickle of regret that he had allowed Ian to rile him so. It was the smile she sent his way that wrapped around the doubt, steadying and reinforcing what he already knew. There was nothing for him to fear in that smile, it only told him that she was his as he was hers, and he returned it finally, feeling some of the tension fade away. He closed his eyes as her words washed over him, and sounded a little embarrassed when he replied.

""Goheno nin. Amin il- caela lave ho karne amin duraya" Forgive me. I should not have allowed him to make me doubt.

It was his turn then, to talk about Ian as if he were not there, and Calanon could not deny it was slightly satisfying excluding the man from their conversation."Amin uma il- sinta mani Amin caela harwa lle toror' ikotane"I do not know what I have done to injure your brother so. The elf glanced across to where Ian had sank into the chair opposite, before he made a rather needless observation " Ro uma il- ve' amin" He does not like me

He wasn’t altogether sure he liked Ian very much in that moment either, and watched him warily as he moved around to perch on the arm of the sofa next to Kailin, letting his free hand come up to rest on her back, perhaps shooting her brother a triumphant look of his own, before he remembered that it would be easier if Kailin’s family did not despise him. He sighed then, and tried for peace.

“Together” he confirmed, trying to keep his voice smooth and without the edge of anger he could still feel at what he considered Ian’s rather unfair treatment of him. “ And not a fling” The last was accompanied by a rather cool gaze, for like it or no, as he had said, Calanon wasn’t going anywhere unless Kailin asked him to.

Kailin was happy to see her words breaking through the tension that rode her beloved, even happier to see his smile when it finally reappeared on his face. This was not what either of them had expected of their brightening, and Kailin still had no idea what Ian was even doing here.

"N'uma lle il- caelaya. Lle sinte ro ume il- sinta en' lye am'.No you should not have. You knew he did not know of us, yet." Though from her brief grimace and the look she then directed toward her brother - hair now mussed from where his fingers had pulled at it - Kailin very much wished she had made a point of doing so before now.

"Ar' ro uma il- sinta lle. Ona ho coiasira,And he barely knows you. Give him time, hmm?"

Leaning into the warmth of his hand on her back, she let out a soft sigh, entirely missing the triumphant look that he directed toward Ian, though she did not miss the narrowing of her brother's eyes, nor the bunching of his jaw muscles. They did not relax with Calanon's confirmation of their relationship.

"Look," she spoke somewhat sharply, an attempt to quell whatever was caught in Ian's craw. He blinked at her, and closed his mouth to lean back and cross one leg over the other. "I know you two... Well," Kailin realized she was about to start stammering, not at all sure how to say this delicately, "you got off on an interesting foot. And it's fair to say that there are likely some things that have never been resolved."

Ian snorted, leveling a rather pointed look at Calanon. Kailin glanced between the two, lips falling into a soft frown.

"But we are together, Ian. And I know you worry about me... you've borne the brunt of what has been a very strange set of months for us all," reaching up, she settled a hand on Calanon's knee, letting Ian see more of the happiness that he'd been mistakenly - if understandably - attributing to Orrian.

"But you've also seen how happy I am, even if you did not entirely understand why, and you have no reason to doubt Calanon."

Ian could see how happy his sister was, and his gaze traveled from one to the other as he debated with himself. He wanted Kailin to be happy, and truly did not wish to do anything that might jeopardize what she had so obviously found. And yet... she seemed so confident in the elf. Perhaps, had everything with Adyn fallen out differently, he would have let it rest. Perhaps if Calanon hadn't flashed him that brief taunting look. Because now he felt she deserved a warning.

"But I do have reason, Kael." Ian's voice was, at least, apologetic as he addressed himself to his sister, though the look he shot Calanon was challenging in the extreme. "He's only just admitted it himself. Your lover is still drawn to me." The emphasis he placed on the last word was, he thought, nicely damning.

Calanon felt the slight stiffening in Kailin's spine, then, a tension that bled into the fingers that gripped his knee as she craned her neck to look up at him.

Calanon cringed as Kailin attempted some kind of mediation, feeling that bringing up how he and Ian had got off in any context could not be a good thing. Nor did he miss the look the man shot at him, and he met it with one of his own. What was his problem?. He was gratified then, as Kailin's hand came to rest upon his knee, sliding a grateful look her way as she attempted to win her brother over.

His irritation at Ian might have abated then, for he knew how close she was to her family, and god knows they did not need to add any further obstacles to their relationship. They had overcome so many already. It would be nice just to enjoy it for a while, and he knew Kailin would be easier if they did not have to sneak around all the time. So the elf had softened his expression, prepared to smooth over whatever awkwardness sat between him and Kailin's closest sibling.

But that sibling had other plans it would seem.

Calanon had sat a little straighter as Ian had begun to speak, the gentle smoothing of his hand up and down Kailin's back ceasing as he picked up on the inflammatory expression on the man's face as he went on.He had a sudden sense of foreboding, and it was soon revealed not to be misplaced.

Why that little...

Reacting to the sudden squeeze of his love's fingers about his leg, the subtle tension that he felt through his palm, Calanon looked panicked when he turned to Kailin. "..I didn't. That is, it wasn't..."

This was ridiculous
. Angry now, he shot Ian a dirty look, before trying to explain.

" I was just trying to spare his feelings!" It was unjust, the accusation that had been levelled at him, that snide little inflection in the male's claim, and the elf bade farewell to any sense of goodwill that he had been working toward.

He stood abruptly then, taking half a step toward where Kailin's brother was seated, his fingers tightening around the wine glass he held. His own accusation was some part defensiveness, some part frustration.

" Why are you being such a little bitch Ian!?"

Kailin could read the panic in Calanon's eyes easily enough as he looked down to her, spluttering. It wasn't really the most reassuring response she could have wished for. Nor was the dirty look he shot toward her brother in the next moment.

Brows pulling together in confusion (and not just a little concern), Kailin arched her neck, head pulling back in surprise at the same moment Ian guffawed loudly at Calanon's attempt to explain. And as the elf shot off the arm of the sofa, Ian wrapped his hands around his knee and leaned comfortably back so he could look up at the fellow, eyes watching the incoming glass of wine carefully, as if it were about to be tossed at him.

The words that followed rang into a shocked silence, as if the room wanted to be absolutely sure that each pair of ears heard Calanon's outburst not just once, but again when the sound bounced off the surrounding walls. Ian's expression, which had been bright with mirth just moments before, shuttered completely.

Kailin saw the anger behind the cool mask, though, and had a moment of disorientation in which she felt as if she'd stumbled into a different, rather unpleasant reality. Her hand stretched out to Ian first, though, because he was not only a gifted swordsman, but had a sharp and damaging tongue when provoked. Abruptly, she sat forward on the couch, "Now wait--"

"A bitch?" Ian's voice cut through Kailin's attempt to stop whatever was coming, and there was derision as he repeated the derogatory term Cal had chosen to employ. "You were trying to spare my feelings? Please...

I know you don't know much about protecting your siblings, given your... proclivities, but we Alyxandas look out for one another," his tone was arch, his eyes cold, "and my sister deserves to know it, if you came here to try and repeat your own sordid histo--"

"IAN ELLIS ALYXANDA," Kailin was on her feet now, reaching for Calanon as she thundered across at her brother. "You will shut your mouth this instant and get. Out. Cool down." Her tone was ice, and the fire that lit her pale green eyes somewhat subdued by the concern with which she regarded her lover.

He had come to his feet almost without realising it, and Calanon too could appreciate just how unpleasant his words sounded as they rang out in the tension. It did not diminish the frustration that had driven them though, and with the echo of Ian's laugh still ringing in his ears, the elf might have been considering hauling the male up out of the chair he was lounging in so he could punch him in his oh so amused face.

Only Ian's amusement did not linger, and Cal was waiting, waiting for whatever explanation the man could have for -in his eyes- deliberately trying to make trouble where there was not to be found. For the moment, Kailin was an afterthought, because it was clear as day to the Sylrosian that this was personal, not just some mix up about Orrian, and the elf would hear whatever issue Ian had, and then decide whether or not to punch him. Although he was veering toward a pro-punching outcome as it stood.

What followed though stopped him in his tracks. Confusion first, a snort, for what did Ian know about him, really? But then Calanon really heard what Kailin's brother was getting at, and all the colour seemed to drain from his face in the space it took for that knowledge to sink in.

Visibly shocked, the elf had no rejoinder, even if Kailin's voice had not cut across whatever Ian might have gone on to say next. He had said enough..

It was a huff of disbelief that fell into the silence after Kailin's reprimand, and Calanon looked over at her with the same stunned expression, horrified and entirely unprepared to deal with having that thrown back at him. He couldn't bear feeling so exposed, and having grasped unsuccessfully for anything to say, the elf simply turned and walked the short distance to the bedroom, where he somehow managed to set the glass down despite the fact that his hands trembled.

God he felt sick. No wonder! No wonder then that Ian wanted him away from Kailin. And her. That she had so clearly divulged the details to another, to how many others? It was a physical pain, almost as if he could feel the knife sunk in to his back. With a groan of distress, Calanon patted his pockets, very deliberately selecting a stick of Felicium from the small tin he carried, lighting it from the candle that had been so optimistically set out by his own hands not a candlemark before.

Anything. Anything to drown out knowing that his history had been laid bare, and worse, drawn up to measure him against now. Kailin had never censored him for it, had never added her own scorn to the sound of his own, and he was shaken that she had clearly chosen to speak of it to her family. Who would now never see past that transgression.

Taking a lungful of smoke, he held his breath, let it permeate, welcoming the gentle burn of the narcotic filtering through tissue, only too happy to be swallowed up by the euphoria it promised rather than have to deal with this unbearable reality. He sat rather heavily on the edge of the bed then, ignoring the sense of deja vu, for it seemed unavoidable now. He would never be clean. Never be able to wash away that mistake and the indelible stain it had left upon his life.
