Tejis is unknown and forgotten
[Port Alyx] A Thief in the Night (Open)

Middle of Summer (Ioannes), Era XXIV

Tejis was asleep, leaning against a building in an alley. Somewhere near him was the stench of someones dinner mixed with to much mead. Pieces of paper fluttered around as a breeze blew past. The hood of his cloak was pulled over his face, the rest was used meekly as a blanket. His left hand was tightly wrapped around this hilt of his steel dagger. His right hand keeping his cloak wrapped around him.

The night sky was getting darker as a storm began to threaten the area. A burst of thunder rang out, Tejis stirred slightly as the noise threatened to wake him. Mumbling, he shifted and quickly drifted back to sleep. Fatigue had finally gotten the better of him, all those days, and countless candlemarks.

Fighting to stay awake for fear of the dreams. The nightmares. The terror. Some days he would look longingly at his dagger, knowing that he could put an end to this torment. He just couldn't decide how to do it. Or perhaps it was his will to live that won the battle. That will is what helped him survive the streets at sixteen, the same will that taught him how to live on the streets. Another clap of thunder followed by a flash of lightning illuminated the sky as the menacing clouds blocked the stars.

Tejis stood in the room, staring in shock and disbelief. His mother, a common courtesan, was laying in a pool of dark liquid. Her face was frozen in time. A look of panic stretched along the pale lifeless skin. Her mouth opened as if to scream, but no words echoed against the walls.

"Mom?" he barely whispered.

There was no answer. There never would be. Tejis hadn't noticed that he wasn't alone. The door slammed shut startling him. He jumped the blood rushing from his face. Two men stood in between him and his only way out. He grabbed his dagger and waved it around, trying to be menacing.

The two men laughed, he couldn't see their faces. "I'll... I'll kill you!" Tejis screamed still waving the dagger around.

"Is t'at w'at ya t'ink little boy?" The man on the right asked.

Tejis didn't answer, he just stared at the men.

"And you think you can best us?"n asked.

"T'at boy can't even use a dagger!"

"Let's finish him. Can't have a witness can we." He smiled evilly at Tejis.

The man on the right quickly jumd Tejis. "Now boy stop fightin' t'is."

Tejis struggled to free himself, when the man grabbed him he had dropped his dagger. "HELP! PLEASE HELmph," he screamed before a hand muffled his mouth. That didn't stop Tejis from screaming.

"Look kid," the other man started walking towards Tejis before stopping and picking up the dropped dagger. "I'll do you a favor. I'll kill you with your own dagger," he laughed.

Struggling harder, Tejis managed to get the hand over his mouth to relax just enough for him to bite it. He clamped his teeth down so hard he drew blood. The taste was vile in his mouth, but he only had one thought going through his mind...he didn't want to die. As the man that the hand was attached to bellowed in pain, the other man quickly shoved the dagger into Tejis stomach.

"AHHHHH AHHHHHH AHHHHH NOOOO NOOOO NOOO!!!!!!" Tejis screamed as he woke up, his dagger unsheathed ready to strike. The scar on his stomach ached from the dream...the memory.

It was rare that a storm caught Kailin unawares. After all, it was part and parcel of the work she did, being aware of any significant weather patterns and planning for them as best she could.

But she'd clearly not been expecting this one, or she wouldn't have sent the carriage home with Ian earlier, leaving herself and Niven to seek out other means of transport, and so late.

"Let's hope your fiance doesn't send a search party out after you," she said to her companion, glancing sideways at the elf as they passed beneath light spilling out of a nearby window. "Is he the sort to worry?"

Given that they were, and had remained, in the relatively safe portions of Port Alyxandrya, Kailin herself was not overly worried, despite the drizzle that had just begun to fall and would - no doubt - soon be a downpour. The surrounding streets were nothing like the Gut, where she still spent a good amount of time when she was home, and where she wouldn't have taken Niven for anything. Having not met this mysterious Dante, yet, she did not wish her first experience of doing so to be handing over a scared, bruised, or bloodied Niven with apologies for having taken her someplace where even much of the constabulary refused to go.

Of course - Kailin glanced sidelong at Niven yet again, lips pursing with displeasure at what she saw - she wasn't sure that he'd be best pleased to receive back a drowned cat, either. Kailin snorted softly. A slightly tipsy drowned cat. And no wonder if it drowned... cats really shouldn't drink.

Muffled snorts of hilarity ensued, as tipsy Kailin amused herself silently and tried to keep from meowing, but cut off abruptly at the sound of wheels clattering noisily over cobble stones. Twisting around, she'd just lifted a hand to wave down the carriage driver (before seeing that the conveyance was a solid street behind them, and following a path perpendicular to their own), when a man's scream fractured the relative quiet of darkening around her.

Eyes wide, she turned first to Niven, mouth open in an 'oh' of shock at the terror the sound held, then stammered, "I-- come on!" before turning to run toward it, intent on somehow saving the man from attack. She was trying to focus well enough to pull together a spell, or even to reach for the essence surrounding her, but between her own fear and the alcohol she'd enjoyed, her magic proved elusive. Instead, her hand wrapped around the hilt of the small dagger she carried in a hidden pocket in her skirts, though she stopped short of taking it from its sheath while running over wet cobblestones drunk. She had some sense left, at least.

All of which proved to be fine when she skidded around a corner into the alley and saw not the scene of a bloody attack, but a sprawled and likely drunken man, fending off nothing but the relatively putrid smelling air - he'd clearly been sick earlier - with his own unsheathed dagger. Pulling up short, she even backed up a pace or two, putting out an arm as she turned to look for Niven before waiting for the man to notice their presence. Neither of them needed to be accidentally stabbed by a drunkard with night terrors.

"It's okay..." she panted, with the same knowledge that everyone had these brightenings, saying the same words that surely everyone had woken to countless times over the past eras, "it was just a dream."

Niven scoffed at her friend's comment about Dante. She glanced at the woman who's face was lit by the light they were passing by. "One to worry? Not usually. One to worry about me? Most definitely. But he know's I'm always armed..." she patted the dagger on her hip, "... and most of the self-defence I know he's taught me, so he really shouldn't be too upset. So long as I'm back this darkening at some point, I think we'll be fine. Girl's darkening out doesn't happen every brightening." The elf winked.

It was likely a good thing Kailin hadn't taken Niven anywhere too sketchy. While Niven wasn't one to start a row, she was certainly one to finish one if it arose. Dante would definitely not thank Kailin for exposing his fiancée to anything he felt was unsavoury even with the secure knowledge that the elf could hold her own when necessary. It wasn't how Niven would prefer to introduce her friend to her fiancé either.

Lifting her face to the sky, Niven noted in her tipsy state that it looked like Aetheria was ready to open and any moment drench them. It would have been wiser to have taken a coach back to the inn where she was staying with Dante. But then, when mildly inebriated one tended not to make the best choices. The elf was so focused on the blackening sky that she tripped on a loose cobblestone and barely caught herself before she lunged head first into the street. She dissolved into a fit of giggles. "Whoa!" she laughed at her own clumsiness.

The scream startled both women and the elf gripped the arm of her companion as a chill from the sound ran down her spine. Nodding, Niven ran in step with her, her own dagger drawn. Her own magic would be of no use to them even if she had remembered she had it. The alcohol she'd consumed had sufficiently numbed the essence she newly felt around her.

Turning the corner, she, too, caught sight of the drunk man defending himself from an imagined foe. Unsure of what the man sleepy and drunk might do, Niven kept alert and a safe distance away as adrenaline pumped through her body, killing her merriment. Though, if she was honest, if she was going to be defending herself, addled was the last thing she needed to feel.

Allowing Kailin to take the lead and try and calm him down, Niven eyed the man and braced herself for an attack, not sure how the man would respond in his current mental state, but being prepared for the worst. She'd never been in battle with Kailin and so was unfamiliar with her capabilities, but the Silrosian knew what hers were and she would gut the man before she allowed him to hurt either of them.

OOCThis is going to be some character and background building for Tejis.

Oblivious to the two women near him, he dropped his dagger as he ripped at his shirt frantically to remove it. His face was white with terror and pain. He continued to claw at the shirt until finally his torso was exposed, revealing a malnourished man. Adorning the torso was a scar, roughly the length of the width of a dagger.

Although fourteen years caused the scar to fade, it was now red with half healed scratches and fresh scratches as blood slowly trickled down his stomach. His breathing still quick. A voice echoed dimly through the crash of thunder as the clouds began to let loose a light pattering of rain. "It's okay...it was just a dream."

Since the nightmares had started he had never heard those words. He thought he was cursed. Cursed for not protecting his mother. Cursed to relive her final moments and what could have been his. Another flash of lightening illuminated the alley, and that's when he saw the two women.

He slowly moved away from them, keeping his blue eyes on them as his hand went to grab his dagger. There was no dagger to be found. 'Feth! he thought to himself as he started to use his feet to find the dagger while keeping his eyes locked on the two women who both were armed. It didn't take long for him to find a wall as his back pushed against it. 'Damn. Think Tejis. Two women, both with daggers. Wait...was that a slight stumble?'

He watched closer to see if either of their bodies would give way to whether they were intoxicated. He moved slowly still along the wall, still watching the women, still 'feeling' for his dagger. It was becoming futile, and he began to wonder what he looked like to the women. He stopped and lowered his hands to his sides.

As he stilled his breathing, he recalled the voice that echoed dimly in the air. 'It's okay...it's just a dream,' could it have been one of them. But why? Why would they risk themselves for some common street rat. Why would one of them tell him it was a dream? His heart began to quicken as thoughts of them being of the dark arts. The cause of his curse.

Underneath his hood, his blue eyes shown. "Why?" he asked his voice shaking giving away his illusion of being in control, "Why?" he asked again, and again his voice shattered the illusion.

The last time someone had ripped off their shirt in front of Niven, it was Dante upset about the church. It was not funny. This time, however, being slightly tipsy, Niven found it amusing. Mostly because this was the second time it had happened. Apparently men liked ripping their clothes off for her. She dissolved into giggles and lowered her guard. The blood gave her pause and her giggles trailed off. This guy was going crazy clawing at himself. “You shouldn’t do that,” she warned, solemnly. “That hurts.” Then she giggled again at her joke.

The man fumbled around and Niven started to feel sorry for him. She could count his ribs, he was bleeding, and he seemed scared to death of her and Kailin. Sheathing her own dagger she lifted her hands as he found the wall. “It’s ok. We come in peace. We’re not here to attack you.” Her eyes flicking around she spotted the man’s dagger a few yards from him. She thought about pointing it out to him, but even in her inebriated state, she knew it would be unwise to give a wild man a weapon.

He started shouting at them and Niven took a step forward, her hands still raised. “Hey now, it’s ok,” she replied to his trembling voice. “Neither of us are going to hurt you so long as you don’t give us reason to. You don’t need to be afraid," she repeated. The elf gazed into the man’s hungry eyes and smiled warmly.

“I’m Niven, this is Kailin. We thought you might be in some trouble. We came to help. If you want us to go, we will,” the Silrosian cooed soothingly at the man, her voice light and soft. It was like she was talking to one of her kids who was upset. Slow and calm were her best bets.

As Niven patted the dagger at her hip, Kailin's eyes traced the movement and her brows furrowed just before she looked down at her own skirts, trying to imagine how a belt knife or dagger would look as an added adornment. Ridiculous, she decided. She giggled.

On top of which, unlike Dante, Adyn wasn't yet convinced of her proficiency with bladed weapons, and she had to (begrudgingly) agree with him. So for now, the small dagger in her hidden pocket would have to be enough, and used only as a last resort.

"Adyn's been trying to teach me to use a weapon..." Kailin's lips pursed into something that resembled a pout, and she sighed very dramatically, "He's so protective."

"But I will definitely get you back to Dante while it's still dark." She drew a finger over her chest in a criss-cross pattern, and turned as earnest a look as she could manage (while grinning) on the female at her side, "cross my heart."

Moments later, however, that promise was looking less likely as Kailin stared down - Niven at her side and talking calmly (when not giggling) - at the man who'd stopped screaming to yell questions at them. Never a big fan of too many cooks in the kitchen, Kailin fell silent after reassuring him that he'd been dreaming, content to simply observe what was going on and beginning to curse the fog of alcohol.

She'd seen, and cared for, quite a few people who'd had a great deal of trauma to deal with after the attacks, many of whom had turned to drugs and alcohol and lost themselves in the Gut where she made her rounds. So this was not the first such episode she'd witnessed, or even the first episode she'd witnessed that she didn't feel capable of handling. Though, of course, this time it was due to the drinks she and Niven had shared, and the fact that she, too, felt an entirely inappropriate urge to laugh.

It was an urge that dissipated as she took in the injury he'd done himself, and the starkness of his ribcage pushing through the thin, pale skin of his chest. And as she watched him scrabbling for his dagger with his feet as he slid along the wall away from them, she released her hold on her own and took her hand from her pocket, holding both hands up in front of herself to show that she was unarmed and no danger to him.

Kailin glanced sidelong at Niven as the elf said they would leave if he wished them to, wondering whether she meant it. For herself, it would be hard. This fellow was seemingly one step away from being thrown in the gaol, or - far worse - landing in the Gut where he would surely be swallowed up and killed, whether a quick death at the hands of someone else, or a slow death by the madness that seemed to grip him.

"We came to help," Kailin repeated Niven's words, and her features softened as she stared down at him with undisguised concern, and not just a little pity as she asked a question with a seemingly obvious answer, "are you unwell?"

Of course he was unwell, but she wanted to know if he was also unhinged, and if so, whether he was a danger to anyone. It would let her know whether she needed to summon the constables, or merely see him to a safe place. Home perhaps? Might there be family out there, wondering where he was?

Tejis is unknown and forgotten
The fog of the nightmare was starting to diminish as he felt the cold stone of the wall on his back. Another crack of lightening followed by thunder echoed in the night. Chills ran across his body causing goose bumps to appear. His blue eyes never leaving the women in front of him.

The thundered echoed over Niven's giggling, both the women presented their hands to him...almost as if waving a white flag. He hadn't really become aware of the pain caused by the sores on his chest and abdomen, but now...now he was starting to feel the throb of each one with every beat of his heart. His face winced in pain only for a short moment.

He could only partially hear what she was saying. With the approaching storm and the lack of light, he found it difficult to read her lips. He wasn't deaf, but he suffered from some hearing issues. Many of them mostly in part to the many beatings he took during his early years.

His voice still trembling, "Why would you sew?" he asked confused as to her statement, of course he hadn't heard the word 'go'. He tried as he will to control the now almost overwhelming shivering that coursed across his body. Some would consider him crazy, deranged, some one who needed to be institutionalized.

"Have you come to finish your curse on me?" he asked as the rain started to pick up to a more continuous drizzle which only helped to intensify Tejis' shivering. Why would Kailin ask if he was unwell, but now she had her answer.

Kailin was really not following the man's ramblings about sewing and curses, and it occurred to her that he was, quite likely, feverish. With a soft sigh, she let her hands fall to fold in front of herself - a consciously non-threatening posture - and stepped a bit closer to Niven, who she looked at side-long, not wanting to take her gaze completely off of the poor fellow.

"I'd bet he has a fever," unclasping her hands, she turned her palm upward to catch a few raindrops as she spoke in an aside, rubbing her fingers over her palm to prove the wetness, "and this weather will only make it worse."

But what could she do to make a difference? She could heal his abdomen, of course, and possibly help do away with the fever, at least temporarily, but whatever was causing it would still need to run its course. And all of that was assuming she could even cast a spell, in her current state.

For a moment, she felt the absurd desire to tell the man that she had, indeed, come to finish the curse. But she squashed it immediately, and sought her way through the fuzzy, drunken giddiness that coated her brain, and the inane ideas it was currently tossing out for her perusal.

"Do you need help?" feth. They'd already asked that, hadn't they? Or something similar.

Turning more fully toward Niven, she gave her a look that said she had no idea what to do. "I'm drunk," she said by way of explanation, brows pinching together in consternation.

" Sew? Curse?" Niven's drunken state didn't help her confusion. Taking a deep breath, she shook her head slightly to try to clear her head without allowing her eyes to leave the madman, fighting her foggy state. The only curse that she could see was her choice to drink a little more than she should have with her friend.

"Okay....." she breathed, unable to make sense of his ramblings. Her head jerked slightly as Kailin spoke. "Fever," she repeated. It would have to be a high fever, one high enough to cause delirium. It made sense that Kailin would pick up on that being a thaumaturge and a healer. Niven felt a few drops fall on her wheat-coloured hair and heard a few hit a couple ping off something metallic. The storm was coming. They needed to get inside. But they couldn't leave him out here in his current state, more especially if he was ill.

The Silrosian was at a loss. Unless they made headway with this guy, they were going to have no other choice but to leave him out here to fend for himself. And that felt very very wrong to her.

Kailin confessed her own inebriation and Niven nodded feeling her own buzz clouding her mind. "Yeah, me too. Listen, can you calm him down? My magic really only works on Nature. I can calm animals, but I don't think it works on people." Dante, her fiancé who was also a thaumaturge, once cast a calming spell on her that worked wonderfully and knew he'd cast it before over a large group. Surely Kailin could do something similar.

Niven frowned as she surveyed the man again. Her fuzzy state was causing her to get a little frustrated, though she was certain it was just as much with herself as it was with the crazed man before them. If they could calm him down they could get him indoors and maybe try to figure out what was wrong with him, or at least heal his wounds. Maybe put him up for the night in a tavern.
