The Basillica Ecclesiae

The crystalline towers and sacred spires of the Basilica Ecclesiae rose before you as soon as you enter the city of Diana. It is almost as if every other building in the city is dwarfed by this immense, palatial structure of sculpted, prismatic blue jewel and precious gems and metals. The largest central tower formed a keep, but high silver bells continue to ring, as if announcing a particular function. Looking at the time, you realize that the High Mass is about to begin.

The Basillica Ecclesiae is the center of government for the entirety of Carmelyn Province and simultaneously the Seat of the Faith, as such it governs both the city and the province and also guides the Church of the Faith and the redemption of its people.

The Concili are the two councils which regularly co-deliberate over the fate of Carmelyn. Both meet within the legislative chambers of the Basillica - usually in separate wings or different areas, for the main Basilica serves as a central place of worship, mass and celebration of life that the Sacred Three have preserved for the people. The Concilium Sodalitatis is the Provincial Council, wherein all interested citizens regularly participate in discussing local affairs and how best to manage issues - ranging from political arrangements, to crop rotations and even
infrastructure and defense of the Province.

The Concilium Prelatum, however, does not deliberate over matters of the state, but meditates on issues of faith. Consisting solely of Prelates, the Concilium Prelatum or the "College of Prelates", has as its prime responsibility the election of an Archprelate who serves for life as Speaker of the Sacred Three, but is divinely inferior to the Emperor.

As you approached the golden archways leading into the Basillica Ecclesiae, you joined a massive crowd of hundreds of citizens gathering within, praying intently and many of them chanting away verses from the Triance-the Holy Book of the Sacred Faith. Many would make pilgrimages to Diana, considered the Sacred City where visions of the Goddess were frequent during the reign of Queen Candace, long believed to have been a reincarnation of Diana until her unfortunate betrayal and infidelity to her husband, Emperor Constantine.

Even as you enter the grand central Altar, where a statue of Diana in her marble-white beauty stands, gleaming with golden energy as if through enchantment, you feel a spirit call out to you and shiver with excitement as something touches the very essence within all living beings. An elderly Omnicat man stood by the entrance, clad in deep blue robes that set off his creamy white fur and cloudy blue eyes. In a kindly, quavering voice he said "Serale there! Welcome to the Basillica Ecclesiae. May you find the blessing and wisdom of the Gods to light your heart and guide you to your destiny."

TS: Spring of Era I of the Celestine Mandate (current Pattern), Era XIII Post Fractum.

Dante had been in Diana for just over a season now. He had grown to love this city. As such when he found out he could listen in on the political dealings taking place there he decided to go and check it out.

To the Omnicat greeting the visitors he politely asked, where can I go to listen to the Civic discussions? A tingle of excitement raced along Dante's spine.

The Omnicat smiled at the Draconic. He motioned for him to follow him out and pointed to one of the wings of the building. "The civil offices and the Concilium Sodalitatis are in that wing over there You will have to turn in any weapons at the door." The Omnicat said wtih a smile.

The month of Kalendryas, in the Season of Winter, Era II of the Celestine Mandate, Era XIV Post Fractum

Ignissus was in awe of the crystalline towers as soon as he saw them, once he had passed through the gate. Ignissus knew next to nothing about the Basillica Ecclesiae, but when briefly speaking with another dwarf he met along the road to the towers, he was directed to the Basillica in search of information about becoming a Paladin.

Ignissus knew nothing about the religions of Diana, and did not know the why the Allerian citizens worshiped their gods and goddesses. Honestly, it was kind of strange to Ignissus, but that was why he desired to know more about these churches in Diana. So as he approached the foot of the main tower of the Basillica, Ignissus had some doubts about whether Diana was a place where he would fit in.

A part of Ignissus wished he were in the mountains again, mining mithril with his old friend who had tried to prevent Ignissus from going near Diana, with all of her religious rituals. Ignissus sought knowledge of these things more than advice or direction, for Ignissus knew his beliefs and would share them with others to the level he knew them and to the level he trusted them.

But with all of these contemplations, Ignissus was still intrigued by the Basillica, still somewhat unclear on what it actually was, but because of the intrigue which cloaked his mind, Ignissus approached the two guards who seemed doubtful about whether he should pay any attention to a dwarf who seemed as doubtful as Ignissus did.

All told, Leyon Juddah considered himself a very obedient Servant. He would never dream of playing truant. He would only concern himself with the duties assigned to him. He would stick to the ideals of the Benedictus Hospitalitus Motherhouse as lichen to a rock.

But this brightening, a consuming curiosity held sway over him. Sent to purchase a good hammer from the The Divine Hammer Forge, Leyon didn't think it too frivolous to drop by The Basillica Ecclesiae.

"It's along the way," he reasoned to himself.

Leyon had always wanted his own copy of the Triance, one that he can keep in his dormitory and read during sleepless nights. He had spent many afternoons during siesta reading the Triance at the Motherhouse Chapel, but the edition was too big and too old. The pages were brittle, and Leyon did not want to damage it by undue carelessness. "Maybe the Basillica sold copies of the Triance," he hoped. He also wished it wouldn't be for too much. He didn't have much crowns.

Leyon waited patiently for his turn. It seems a young, red-haired Dwarf got to the guards before he did.

"Serale," he greeted him.

"Greetings Leyon." Ignissus replied. "I have traveled far from the depths of the mountains and I am new to the happenings of such a grand city as Diana. Perhaps you could enlighten me about the Basillica and the Paladins here in Diana." Ignissus shuffled his feet in the dirt, wondering where the words he was about to hear would sweep him off to, yet he was at peace.

Ignissus was the type of dwarf who was not easily shaken emotionaly or by circumstance, so wherever his road carried him off to, things were in control. Ignissus was longing to gain knowledge and even climb to the very top of the respectable citizens of Alleria. Ignissus even thought it would be a very fine thing to gain a few kind and prolific friends.

After the necessary introductions, Leyon Juddah spoke briefly about the Basillica. "The Basillica Ecclesiae is the center of government for Diana. It presides over matters of faith and law. This is where you will find the Provincial Council and so its influence extends to the borders of Carmelyn. The Church of the Faith's center is the Basillica as well, so as far as worship and religion is concerned, its command reaches throughout the whole Empire."

Leyon decided that the Basillica must be a very exciting sight to a tourist such as Ignissus. He remembered the first time he laid eyes on the edifice and was awestruck. Has he become overly familiar with the beautiful structure? Has it become common for him to see its grandness everyday?

"It's not fair speech to talk about the Schism between the Church of Faith and the Church of the Sacred Three, but you may already have heard of it, seeing that you are a traveler. I myself take a neutral stand between this rift, being a Servant. We are only to serve the best interest of the citizens of Diana.

"I would do you wrong if I do not tell you about The Benedictus Servantus Motherhouse, of which I am a Servant. It's not very far from here and you'll find you're always welcome if you visit us.

"May I ask you, then, Ignissus, what brings you to Diana? I am sure this place holds grand opportunity for travelers like you, as it does for me. I came to the city about an era ago, and have stayed here since. Maybe you can tell me about the places you've been to. And as for whatever it is you look for in the city, maybe I can assist you."

Ignissus listened intently to the sincere words of Leyon and believed Leyon was a very fervent servant of his faith. Because Ignissus came from far lands he was completely foreign to the customs and beliefs of the citizens of Carmelyn.

"Well, Leyon, I must say you certainly are welcoming. I would most say you are welcoming. Where I come from it is difficult to come across many with the politeness to even notice one's existence. And by your looks I would say you are of the Human Race. You know, it is quite a rare thing to meet one of your kind in the faraway land I am from."

Leyon the Human spoke a good word as only the second person Ignissus came in contact with. Ignissus was glad to see one so eager to help a traveler from distant lands.

"Tell me, if you would, sir Leyon, do I have to worship Diana's gods and goddesses to be accepted in this strange land, or is the land still bright for one who wants to keep their spiritual beliefs private? And also, dear sir, Where is the storehouse of light? for I truly desire to keep that place my final destination. And finally, now that I dont feel the Basillica is where I feel led to go, Where in Diana could you and I go to get some quality brown ale?"

Ignissus decided that he had no desire to be a Paladin in any of such faiths as were presented to him at the Basillica, and he didnt know how one could make a living in Diana, but he wasnt shaken and he still felt like everything was in control.

Leyon was astounded. It must be the first time he met someone from outside Diana who didn't come to the Temple for a pilgrimage. He tried to hide his astonishment much as he can, so as not to offend Ignissus. "If you're a Jorelite, it may be best to keep quiet about your religious preference. The people might not take kindly to it. Diana is steeped in tradition and religious practice and there are many who are devout. I would want you to enjoy your stay here in Diana. Even if you're not religious, that is perfectly fine. So long as you're not opposed to the Church and allow the people to practice their belief.

"I am not sure about the Storehouse of Light, but if you wish, we can visit the Inn where I'm sure somebody would know of it. Incidentally, brown ale there is of a quality I'm sure you would enjoy."

A letter was delivered, bearing the seal of the city of Aelyria Prime. Once opened, the beautiful ivory parchment would reveal a most interesting proposition:

Within the Embassy, we are offering one office, free of charge, to be used for promoting information on opportunities within your cities in the areas mentioned above. Of course, your city would need to staff the office, but my offices would be available to find suitable housing for said staff.

Please forward any inquiries or comments to my office as soon as possible. Tentatively, we would like to hear from all cities within the month so that plan can move forward. Our estimated date of opening for the Imperial Trade Embassy is the first of Summer.

The young legionnaire swept into the entrance to the Basillica, undaunted by the grandeur and the ceremonious surroundings that greeted him. He was dressed as a traveller; long blonde hair unbound and brushed behind his shoulders, a thin, black sleeve-less tunic that reached to just below his knees, leather sandles that laced up his calves, and a threadbare gray greatcloak that just barely hung to the bottom of his six-foot frame. The cloak was clasped with the single sterling bar that marked him a Sword Deakin of the Imperial Legion, and despite his road-weary appearance, he held himself with the poise and dignity of an Officer. He quickly approached the kindly citizen waiting at the building's entrance, and glanced down at him with his lone azure orb.

"Serale," Cyrus spoke, his deep voice hoarse with disuse, "I am Sword Daekin Cyrus Marius, 30th Legion out of Aelyria Prime, on assignment from the Minister of War himself."

The legionnaire paused a moment, letting the authority behind his mission sink into the man's conciousness. To emphisize his point, Cyrus held up the emblem of the Ministry; the Imperial Warbird that had graced the parchment the young soldier had recieved earlier from the Minister's adjutant.

"I have been tasked with learning the standing size of the 4th Legion, the quality of your armaments and fortifications, as well as the quality of your training and fitness for battle. I am also ordered to inquire as to the significant threats in the area, and the number, quality and severity of saids threats and what problems they present to the stability of Diana.

If you would, direct me to the senior officer in charge of the 4th Legion, or if needs be, the Thane of the province itself."

Alicia Gil'dae walked into the Basillica Ecclesiae and looked around almost dispassionately, looking at the place and wondering where it was that she had come to. She knew the place, of course, but what had become obvious to her most quickly was that she could not simply sit at home and grieve for her dead. She had to do something, and she knew that she was good at only one thing.

So she entered the Basillica and smiled at the person behind the reception area. "Serale. I wonder, could I speak to someone about possible job vacancies?" she said, quietly, looking calmly around and smiling gently. Her long raven-black hair was loose and hanging down her back and her mist grey eyes were neutral with a vague look of interest in them. This person was certainly.. enthusiastic, she considered, and she hoped that the Gods did indeed smile on her.

It would be nice.
