NEW CHARACTERS AND STARTING PACKAGES
STARTING A NEW CHARACTER
If you're new to Aelyria, you've hopefully read our very useful Help Index, which contains information on Character Creation, Starting Packages, Character Information Repositories, and a Writing Guide. You should also read up on the Calendar to understand Fluid Time and timestamping. Once you've been through all of that (I know, it's a lot!) and you have a good idea of how Aelyria works, set up your character (PC) and let's get started.
STARTING PACKAGES
Each new character is entitled to a Starting Package in whichever city you choose to begin in. Your character can start as a visitor/immigrant from another city coming to Demios, or as a longtime Demios resident. A starting package usually includes some money, food, clothes, an apartment, and other essentials. If you choose to start in Demios, I can set you up with a custom package such as a living space in the city, a basic skill (such as fishing, cooking, singing), and even a job!
Here is the basic starting package: START: 1500 Gold Crowns
* 1 Visa
* 1 Rusty Dagger
* 1 Set of Plain Clothes and Toiletries (comb, soap, etc.)
* Food/Water for 5 Brightenings
* 1 Family Heirloom (cannot be sold)
(-1000) Deed to a Basic Tenement in Demios
* 500 Gold Crowns
Sure, it's fine for those who don't know what they want to do with their characters yet, but if you have some ideas for a skill you'd like to start out with or a special situation you have in mind for your PC, I can custom tweak your package to include almost anything (within reason).
Here are some example starting packages to get you thinking:
This PC has ambitions to become a jewelcrafter. START: 1500 Gold Crowns
* 1 Visa
* 1 Set of Plain Clothes and Toiletries (comb, soap, etc.)
* Food/Water for 5 Brightenings
* 1 Family Heirloom: bracelet (cannot be sold)
* basic art supplies (notebook, charcoal, pens, inks)
* job and lodging at a local jewelcrafting shop
(-800) Basic Art (concept sketching)
(-100) jewelcrafting kit
* 600 Gold Crowns
This PC might want to begin combat training and looking into a governmental position. START: 1500 Gold Crowns
* 1 Visa
* 1 Set of Plain Clothes and Toiletries (comb, soap, etc.)
* Food/Water for 5 Brightenings
* 1 Family Heirloom: cloak (cannot be sold)
(-800) Basic Law
(-75) cutlass
* 625 Gold Crowns
All Demiosian starting packages have to go through me, so PM me to get this set up!
ARRIVING IN DEMIOS
Most people use the complimentary ferry service that goes to Demios from the nearby fishing town of Trysvale. Of course, you can always use your own ship, swim, or fly, if you have the means.
LIVING IN DEMIOS
If you include a home in Demios as part of your starting package, you get a deed to a cottage worth 1000 crowns. These sturdy cottages are made of stone and include a small living area, a bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen.
Another option is looking for a home after you negotiate your starting package and enter Demios. The Aedile's Office sells partially damaged cottages and apartments for 200-800 crowns. They include many of the same features as new cottages, but depending on the price, they may have incurred some damage from the crazy Demios weather.
Alternatively, many places of employment offer free or discounted housing for their employees. If you're considering a job, ask your prospective employer about what kinds of housing they can offer.
If a house or apartment doesn't sound like your kind of thing, you could always camp out beneath the lovely Demios stars! Make sure your tent doesn't get whisked away by the wind!

POSTING IN DEMIOS
What do you do after you get your PC set up? Start posting! Here are some ideas:
- Post in the OOC thread and introduce yourself to your fellow Demiosians!
- Post your arrival at the Ferry Landing.
- If we've arranged for you to already have a living space, post a thread for your house so that others can visit you and send you letters. Otherwise, visit the Aedile's Office to find a place to live.
- Eventually, you'll need some coin to spend on food and supplies. Why not look for a job in the Employment Listings?
- Look at the Notice Board and the Orator's Square for possible adventure opportunities.
- Find an interesting location on the Link Map and visit!
- Post an open thread exploring the city, and meet your fellow PCs!
You don't need to make a new thread for everything you do. Most actions can be posted in the main thread, like the Aedile's Office or shop thread. If you plan to have a big adventure branching out from a shop thread (for example, if you plan to meet someone at a cafe, then go for a walk around the city) it might be best to make a new thread specifying the location and who's involved.
TIMESTAMPING
Whether you choose to make a new thread or post in an existing, ongoing thread, don't forget to timestamp! You can make your timestamp as elaborate as you want, but if you want to keep it simple, just be sure to provide the general time, brightening (day) or cycle (week), month, season, and era (year).
Examples:
- Early afternoon, Brightening 6, Melora, Winter, Era XV
- Dawn, First Cycle of Kalendryas, Winter, Era XV
The current season and useable months are listed in an announcement at the top of each city forum. When the season changes, all threads from the last season are considered 'grandfathered,' meaning that they cannot be joined by new PCs.
Please timestamp all new threads, as well as posts to ongoing threads like shops or offices.
NEW THREADS
Make new threads for adventures, wandering around, training, or conducting an event that takes place at a fixed location, but may move to a different location or get all crazy and adventurous. For simple actions at a fixed location, simply post at that location.
Do you have an idea for a new location? PM me and we'll talk!
You can use thread titles to specify who can or cannot join your thread. Keep them simple ("Basic Fire Dancing") or go crazy!
Here is the basic formula for a new thread: [Location] Title (who/what?)
Examples:
- [Weaver's Woods] Spider Hunting (open)
- [Silver Swan] A Lunch Date (private, Charlie and Cecylia)
- Damsel in Distress (Aurora, PM to join)

TRAINING AND CLASSES
What do you want your character to accomplish? What do you want your character to be good at? Whatever it is, you'll nee to train, and you can read all about training in the Skills Primer.
Whether you choose to train in Combat, Trades, or Arcana, you'll rise through five levels of proficiency by gaining experience points through lessons or practice. You can arrange to begin with a basic skill with your Starting Package if you're a new character; otherwise, you must train to acquire the skill or knowledge.
Demios offers a wide range of educational opportunities! There is the Ivory Wings Universitas, comprised of:
Demios offers skills such as cooking, baking, massage, sailing, fishing, shipbuilding, dancing, and more! For those who prefer a more hands-on method, training may be acquired in almost any field at shops and locations all over the island. For example, those who wish to become chefs should inquire at The Leap of Faith or the Steamy Lava Spa. For more ideas, please look at the island's Employment Opportunities.
Who can moderate my threads?You can ask a GM or AGM for moderation. You can self-moderate, or you can ask a fellow PC to moderate if the thread is Lv3 and under. For more information, head over to the Moderation Request Thread. How many training threads can I have at once?Two, but it's a bit more complicated than that. When running two war-related threads (arcana, combat, etc.) only one of them can be Lv3 or higher. The same goes for non-war threads. So potentially, you could have: - Combat (Lv1 - Lv5)
- Combat (Lv1 or Lv2)
- Non-Combat (Lv1 - Lv5)
- Non-Combat (Lv1 or Lv2)
However, to keep yourself (and your moderators!) sane, I would suggest you only have two training threads of any kind at a time.
How many experience threads can I have at once?Unlike training threads, you can have as many experience threads as you want.
How do I get more experience?It's simple: practice! Once you have a skill (and the 2xp that come with your Basic level certification), you can roam free around the island, practicing your skills wherever you can! Do you have a basic combat skill? Wander into the Weaver's Woods to battle some giant spiders! Do you have a trade skill? Seek out an apprenticeship with a local shop, restaurant, or higher-level practitioner to gain some more experience. How do I know when my thread is finished?Here are the guidelines I use to tell when a thread is complete:
- Post Length: These are rough estimates, and each thread will be considered differently. Are the posts well-written, or short and sparse? Are there pictures or descriptive prose, or does the PC just gloss over the progress that is being made? Try to follow these guidelines. A moderator will let you know if your thread is of a suitable length or if it needs more work. The guidelines below indicate how many posts should be from you, the PC, regardless of whether or not the thread is self-moderated or xGM/peer-moderated.
- Lv1: 10-15 posts
- Lv2: 15-20 posts
- Lv3: 20-30 posts
- If a training thread:Has the PC learned everything required at that level of proficiency?
- If an experience thread:Has the PC demonstrated the things they learned at that level? Is the outcome a good show of their training so far?
When you feel that your thread is finished, let me know so that I can stamp your thread as 'complete' and award your XP.
Who gives me my experience points (XP)?Any GM (and AGM, with GM's permission) can award points. If you're doing your training in Demios, that GM is me. When you have finished with your thread (see above), let me know so I can award your points!
- 1 point for standard use. (10 posts)
- A PC who has just learned Novice Flute plays a few songs for a crowd.
- 2 points for awesome/long-term use. (10-25 posts)
- A PC uses his Longsword skills to fight off a group of demons in a group adventure.
- A PC with Dance invents her own style over a period of practice time.
- 3 points for phenomenal use. (? posts)
- A PC uses his/her skill in an exceptionally brilliant way, setting new heights for all those to come.
What about seasonal XP? Can I get XP for my PC's job, or something that he/she does regularly?To earn seasonal XP, you must actively RP your skill each season. You can't get a job as a painter, but not post your PC doing any painting, and then expect 2 XP for that season. If you're a prefect or aspiring judge, attend some trials. If you're a singer, hold a concert. In addition, skills such as combat and arcana will decrease in level if not used to a certain degree frequently.
