Grumpy Sam's is the most popular dwarven restaurant in Dargis. Mainly because it was short on style and long on portion. The voracious appitite of dwarves is legendary, and their waistlines prove it, so Grumpy Sam's is the favorite hangout for those who want to eat and eat well.
Sam lived up to his reputation. He had once been a notable chef in the Empire, but he had a big problem. He could not get along with anyone; so humans, and especially elves, complained so loudly about him, that he got fired at every decent restaurant in Aelyria. Salvaging a few crowns from the sale of his house, he returned to Dargis where his grumpiness was not out of character from his patrons. Dwarves will put up with most anything to get a huge hunk of steak and ribs. So immediately it became the most popular grub place in Dargis.
Upon entering through wooden doors, you see at the back of the room a large fire pit with an iron grille over it. The smoke and heat is vented from the room by a large chimney which is rumored to be 50 feet tall so that the smoke or steam is sucked up from the grilling area. Behind the grill and the large table containing side dishes of baked potatoes, roasted ears of corn and other vegetables, stands Sam in a large white chef's hat. He never forgets that he is one of the finest chefs in Aelyria.
There are many simple wooden tables and chairs scattered about. You have to seat yourself, because there is usually no hostess, and if you want food you have to walk up to the buffet line and serve yourself. Your meat entree can be ordered by yelling at Sam behind the grill. Occasionally some dwarven waiters or waitresses show up for work, but since the pay is terrible, only halflings stay around. The balance of halflings and dwarves really pays off for the halflings, for they are much more charming and sly, so they usually get larger tips.
