Mrs. Wainthrop's Boarding House
Mrs. Wainthrop's boarding house was situated in cheapside , not too far away from the parks that bordered the home of the nobles. The building, like most of the houses in the district of the lower classes, was built of grey stone, with a small patch a garden running around all four sides. A sign, visible through a glass window in the front of the building proclaimed it to be 'Mrs. Wainthrop's Boarding House for People of a Respectable Nature. Flower boxes lined the two front windows which, in summer, were ablaze with many different colours.
The gardens that surrounded the house were really no more than a short strip of grass that separated the boarding house from the street outside, and the other buildings to the left and right of it. A small, low wall made of the same stone ran around it, and the entrance to the actual house was accessible through a simple wooden gate that had to be carefully unlatched before entry was granted. The actual front door to the house was a heavy oak affair, and was clearly not open for just anyone to walk in. Residents were usually given a key, and anyone else interested in entering the establishment had only the one choice - to knock the heavy brass lion-shaped knocker that had been affixed to the door for just such a purpose.
Once the knocker had been used, a brief pause would ensue before the portal was opened, revealing a slightly over middle-aged human woman, who would peer critically at the newcomer with a look of apprehension in her eyes. Her hair, iron grey, was tied up into a prim bun on the back of her head. She usually wore long, high-necked dresses in black with little or no decoration, and a slim gold band on the ring finger of her left hand. The hall that was just about visible behind her seemed to be crammed full of various knick-knacks and pieces of odd furniture. Evidently, this could only be Mrs. Wainthrop.
"Good brightening, are you here to hinquire about a room?"
