[Prime] Hopes and fears (Nimh)

Early Spring, Era XXIV

Everything had started a few months before. There were rumors of a dead city once again alive. The end of the year was coming but still, she had followed her curiosity and ventured outside the confort of her new built house in Demios.

She had found the once again alive city and more she had thought. In place of the city there had been a bustling market full of wonders and mysteries. It was said you could find everything there. And she tried her luck on this, looking for informations about her long lost sister.

And she got what she looked for: her sister was in Prime, she had seen a vision with her and one of the churches of the capitol city. Only that in exchange of such a vision she had given up her name. Everything has a price. Always. At first she didn't fully realized that but when she tried to remember, to call herself, the reality came crushing on her. She couldn't remember her name nor anyone around her could do.

Her name got erased from the living world.

She had panicked. She had closed herself in her home, scared, trying to give everything a reason. However, there wasn't much she could do. At least at the moment. On the other hand, she knew her sister was alive. This brought relief to her heart and hope they could be reunited once again.

Her first impulse had been to go to Aelyria Prime and search the city. But then, without a name? She wasn't sure Mila could recognize her, even if her black and blue hairs were quite unique and they had shared a really strong bond.

Doubts crawled in her mind. Will she? Won't she?

She had remained home for most of that long months; she hadn't much will to go out. In the end, however, she couldn't resist the desire to see Mila again and she had sailed for Aelyria Prime.

Aelyria Prime was a big bustling city, full of people shouting, working, living. So big and loud compared to Demios but not in the way Ziel Aerca was, all so shiny with magic. She had doubted she could find Mila in such a mess. The city was big, she wasn't.

She felt discouraged but the hope to see her again was warm in her heart. She had fought many times many different things inside and outide her mind. She won't stop now, not so close to see her once again.

She had seen the Cathedral of the Faith, she was sure enough about this. Had that church a particular meaning for Mila? Was it a place she visited often? She didn't know. She herself didn't believe much in the gods but for her sister might be different. Questions and doubts, so many of them without an answer.

She wasn't sure if she had the courage to approach Mila, so much time had passed... and she had changed. She would be happy just seeing her from afar again, right?

The Cathedral of the Faith was an impressive building and she already saw it in the distance as she got closer and closer...

In the start of spring the city was starting to see an influx of travelers and merchants come to hawk their wares on the fine city streets of Aelyria Prime. It was a busy day, bright and blue and beautiful, for the capital of the empire and the people moved around Diamea as she took sight of the great cathedral in the distance, using it as a beacon to guide her way towards it. The streets were more or less direct rather than meandering and in no time the young woman found herself standing in front of the towering structure.

It was beautiful, no cost spared when going into its construction. Great stained glass windows dominated the tall, narrow windows--new windows, too, judging by the looks of them, Diana's absence from the scenes notable--and the architecture itself was swooping and grand. Two great doors stood open at the top of the stairs and it was clear there was much foot traffic here, too, as in the rest of the city. People had come from many places in a pilgrimage to pray at the altar of the cathedral, to grasp at the hope of being blessed by the Archbishop present at the church. Not that there was a line or anything but it was obvious that the place was not going to be quiet and clear in the middle of the day.

A great set of stone stairs led up to the open doorway, leading the way into a great reception room with a tall vaulted ceiling with great stone arches supporting the stunning rooftop overhead. Inside, a stone sculpture had gone to great lengths to fix the gods into the walls...and it was just as clear that someone else was going to great lengths to eradicate any trace of Diana in the stonework. She was still evident in places but they were trying at least.

The receiving room was dominated by a small fountain of water and a pair of priests standing with a pitcher, offering to those coming in to wash their hands before they entered--ostensibly because everyone coming in ought to be clean in front of the gods but, too, because they were well aware of some folks' grubbiness and wanted to reduce how often they scrubbed the backs of the pews. The inner sanctum of the cathedral itself was a wide open space where many could stand for sermon with a small number of pews at the forefront. The altar that dominated the front of the room was heavy with carved vines and draped with a rich red cloth. Sunlight sparkled through the glass windows behind the altar, this glass also newly replaced with a fresh scene completely absent of Diana. Someone was spending a lot of money on the cathedral, to be sure.

The place was not quiet, of a certainty. Travelers and other sorts lingered in the room, marveling at the architecture and taking their turns before stone statues present along the sides to pray to the gods. A few were in the pews--the rich, the sort that could afford the luxury to make a donation allowing for their placement there--praying with bowed heads. Hard to see if there was a young girl by the name of Mila present among them all.

Diamea is a glorious SuperheroDiamea is a glorious SuperheroDiamea is a glorious SuperheroDiamea is a glorious Superhero

The day, bright and blue and beautiful seemed smiling down to the busy city and to the dark-haired girl making its way through it. She couldn't but feel the sun's warm touch on her skin, the caress of the breeze, it made her smile a bit. At least it was a beautiful day, her mind and heart were already clogged with hopes and fears, a dull, grey, raining day wouldn't have helped at all!

Diamea had to stop once she reached the Cathedral of Faith. She wasn't a believer, still the building was impressive with it's tall shapes and stained glass windows. So much was done for faith, no cost spared to show it to the others and to the God's above. Slowly she moved forward, up the steps and inside.

She was of the idea the cleaness was inside and not in the hands, nor she was grubby but she respected the wishes of the priests and she washed her hands. Her eyes took in the stone arching above, the many sculpture dotting the place and she started realizing that someone was actively trying to erase the presence of Diana from there. Someone rich enough to try erase every single glass and statue of the many filling walls and columns. Interesting... Nonetheless the place was impressive inside as much as outside.

However, her mind was soon back on another thoughts, she wasn't there to wonder about people's changes of deities. Her deep blue eyes scanned the room: in that hour of the day the cathedral had many people preying and lingering around so it was hard to spot a young girl like Mila. Doubt was clawing inside, would she recognize her? Time had passed, she might have changed... even if she knew there were things that never change.

She thought about coming back at a later hour but she choose again it. She decided instead to explore the place a bit more and discretely she made her way around, trying to not get any attention while looking around for Mila.

"Siramae, give me your hand." The voice was quiet and yet seemed to penetrate through the crowd of people around Diamea. There was a sort of familiarity to it and yet...

It wouldn't take much to spot her: a willowy figure, an inch or two shorter than Diamea herself, with black hair carefully arranged around her head in artful plaits and set neatly into place with decorative silver pins carved into little flowers. Hers was a serene, patient face despite the small child she reached her hand towards--an elvish waif in fine clothing who looked to be six or seven ordinances in age. That child made a face at Dia's little sister but took her hand anyway.

Mila briefly checked the child over, ensuring clothing was straight and everything was in place. "I almost lost you. What would your parents say?" She clucked her tongue lightly and began to guide the elf away from the area around Diamea, starting to disappear into the crowd of people around them. Mila had eyes for the child alone rather than darting uncertain looks around her. She was focused, set in what her task was: watch the girl.

The girl gave an indelicate little snort and muttered something that was lost in the steady noise of the cathedral.

The crowd swallowed them, hiding the pair from view.

In all the noise of the many people talking, Diamea heard a voice raising, reaching her and sticking to her ear. At first it felt just like any other voice but then... it had something familiar, something pulling at a string deep inside. Her eyes immediatley tried to spot the owner of such a voice and she soon spotted its owner.

She stopped dead in her tracks, unable to take her eyes away. She stared at the girl, was really she? Her lost sister... At first she found difficult believe it, she was just a child back when she disappeared, the girl in front of her was nearly a woman. But there were things she recognized and she coudn't mistake.

When her sister set herself a task, she was focused on it until the end, it was so back in the day and Diamea saw in the now too. The actual task was watch the girl... it made her wonder. Was her sister a house slave tasked with watching the girl? Or was she a babysitter? By the way her hairs were combed with that silver pins she didn't seem to be a good place to work or live in. Or had she been adopted?

So many questions and no real answer.

But in the time she wondered, the couple, her sister and the little elf child, got swallowed by the surroindings crowd. She couldn't loose her now! Her heart was rushing, it was her, she was alive... as carefully as possible she made her way through the crowd trying to follow Mila's tail.

Diamea pursued her sister at a distance. She was able to watch as Mila and the child met up with a pair of elves. They were Medonian, as far as elves went, with fair skin and each with brown-black hair. They were well dressed and equally well adorned, each of them in fine silk clothing and the woman wearing fancier silver pins bedecked with green gemstones in her own plaited hair. The woman smiled upon both Mila and the child, said something to them that Diamea couldn't catch, and then they were moving, finishing up their benedictions with one of the priests.

They turned then to leave and Mila's eyes caught on Diamea.

There was a stillness about her. She was startled into standing still even as the child jerked forward, nearly dragging the girl off balance. Mila stared at her, releasing the child's hand, emotion visible in her. And then confusion, as if she searched for something in her mind and came up empty.

And then the elf was speaking sharply and Mila gave a small start, jerking towards the elves to catch up the child's hand again and make a deferring apology for her inattention.

Diamea pursued her sister and observed silently, from the cover offered by the crowd, as her sister and the child rendezvous with the elf couple. They indeed were rich people, judging by their demeanor and look. Watching them as they finished up their benedictions, made Diamea wonder even more about who their were and what was their relathionship toward Mila.

The last thing she expected was that Mila's eyes caught her. She felt time froze as Mila stared at her, emotions appearing in her face and searching for a name that was no more, for now at least. On her side, Diamea couldn't but stare at her long lost sister, she had recognized her, she had remembered her... she made half a step forward, on her lips forming and burning her sister's name just as Mila gave a small start to reach for the elven couple.

She remained still for a long moment, feeling her heart churning with emotions, burning and bouncing. They could be reunited once again... but they still weren't togheter! She had to stay focused, she couldn't loose them in the crowd of the cathedral, not now. As silent as before she did her best to get back on the tracks of the elven couple and her sister.

She felt bad for having made her sister get a reprimand... she just hoped to not have gotten her sister in too much troubles...

I'm loving this thread. Thank you so much Nihm.

So Diamea followed after them. Mila seemed keenly away of her sister's presence, skirting looks back over her shoulder now and again, seeking a quick glimpse of the other. Mostly, she didn't see Diamea but as they approached the main street outside of the cathedral, their eyes locked again. Mila seemed torn with emotion--happiness, confusion, uncertainty. She didn't call out and wave or otherwise gesture. It was as if she were frozen, incapable of doing little else but follow in the direction the two elves walked.

At the street, a carriage bumped up to greet them and the two elvish adults were handed up into the coach by their footman. The youngster was assisted by both the footman and Mila before the footman turned to get back into his spot at the front with Mila climbing up onto a seat at the back of the coach--not inside, but riding on a flat seat designed to keep the help out of the main sitting area.

She stared after Diamea as the carriage fought to move into the busy streets of the city, the footman crying out for people to give way and move aside. It wouldn't be a fast journey by carriage, to be certain, not until they reached places where the population on the streets dwindled, but once that happened? Diamea might have to say farewell again to her sister if she couldn't keep up.

Mila clasped her hands on her lap, knuckles white. The emotion in her face hadn't changed but the happiness was starting to slip away, moving more into a blip of despair as the carriage began to create distance between them.

She indeed followed, when their eyes met she tried to make her see, make her understand what she was feeling inside. She saw the happiness, the confusion and the undertainty dancing in her sister's eyes, they made her move faster, she wanted to make that confusion disappear, she wanted to hold her again, to hear her again. She imagined the fact that she never did a single gesture was cause of the presence of the elves, her employer, keeping her in check. Still, a thought crept in the back of her mind: could they have put a spell on her? She shivered at such thought, it felt terrible! But it couldn't be so and she tried to push it away.

Out they were of the Cathedral and a carriage arrived to pick them up. Why a carriage, couldn't they go walking?! She should have expected it, that elven couple look like, even more now, someone with power and money. She tried to come closer as they climbed in and the thought of a magic spell crept up again as she saw Mila climbing on the back of the carriage. Why couldn't she go in? Was she more of a servant than everything else? Or even worse?

The dark-haired girl tried to keep these creepy thoughts at bay but in front of her eyes the carriage started moving. She remained still for a moment, her deep blue eyes locked with Mila's ones. Pleading her to stay, to not go. But the carriage kept making it's way to the crowd. She couldn't let it go!

She started running towards it, trying to gain before it reached less crowded streets. She put in everything she had, she couldn't loose her now that she had found her. "Mila!" she called, her black and blue hairs dancing in the wing as she run at breakneck speed, not caring for the people around her, just for Mila and the carriage forward "No!" she cried as she saw the despair moving in her sister's eyes "Don't go!"

Diamea really did her best to catch up with the carriage, if she reached it, she would try to get on it or at least make it stop. If not... she would ask her something crazy: to jump from the carriage.

Diamea ran! With all the people in the streets, she was fairly lucky in that the carriage wasn't able to pick up speed and move away from her at a pace faster than a walk. She caught up to it with relatively ease before it reached the unpopulated areas. Her sister's hands had fallen from her lap to grip the handle at the back of the carriage, leaning a little forward as her name was called out, as she was asked not to go. Her sister did look torn, to her credit, but she remained on the carriage, watching Diamea's passage up until she finally caught up.

"Sister?" she called down to her. The word sounded shaky and uncertain. The confusion was there again. Why wasn't there a name to go with the face and the familial relation? How could she have forgotten her sister's name?

The carriage was starting to pick up her pace when Mila reached out to help catch her, to draw her up on the carriage alongside of her, to clasp her sister against her in a manner that nearly rocked them both off of the coach. Tears were in Mila's eyes as she drew back, some make-up around her eyes running. She really had been done up very prettily. "You can't--"

The voice called out and the carriage stopped abruptly. Mila gave her sister a shove. "Find the manor of Naesala and Narbeth Kearalei in the Forum. On the street of Empress Michelle." She gave Diamea another shove. "Quick. Please. Go."

"Milaeandriel. Who is that with you?" Foot falls quickly coming. The carriage door had opened and whoever it was was coming quickly. Mila seemed desperate for her sister to just go.

Diamea felt her heart pounding, her eyes were set on the carriage and on her sister up there. She thanked the population slowing the carriage down enough for her to catch up. "It's me." she said, trying to convey everything through her eyes and voice, not having a name to say but then having emotions, feelings, love to show.

Their hands met, Diamea griped on her and get up on the moving carriage; some of her breath left her as Mila clasped her that way but after making sure they were not going to fall, her own arms reached to pull her as close "I found you..." she whispered softly, pressing her face against her head. So much time, so much pain, but she was real, she was alive. It was all that mattered for her, her sister alive. As they drew back, her own eyes were wet with tears too, she found difficult to hold herself, her hearth full of joy. "Yes, I'm alive and I've finally found you." she said softly, smiling, trying to reassure her, a hand reaching to caress her cheek.

Diamea was troubled, she didn't want to leave her, not now she had found her. Still, the urge, the shoves she gave her, made her think about remaining. She had given her an address, a place to look for her. She could find her again. Maybe it wasn't the time to meet with the elven couple, maybe it was the time to leave only to meet again.

With her hearth gripped in pain, she pulled her close one last time "I'll find you again, wait for me." she whispered before falling on the other side of the carriage and moving to disappear into the crowd before anyone could see her. She used the crowd to disappear and hide. Her eyes followed the carriage as it went on its way. She had a name and a place. Time to do some data gathering.

As casual as possible, she would try to investigate about the two names Mila mentioned, as well as about the location she had been given. Let's see if she could find any useful information.

Diamea didn't hear the confrontation at the carriage but she did get to see it: Mila gesturing and talking in what seemed to be a fairly calm manner, all things considered. Eventually the carriage did get underway again, her sister craning to get a look around the crowd, to see if she could locate that familiar face again before they moved down another road. She didn't lock eyes with Diamea again, unable to spot her among all the rest.

And then she was gone, disappeared up another road as they rattled back towards the Forum.

Information gathering depended quite highly on where Diamea began her search. Taverns in her immediate vicinity revealed very little. The closer she got to the Forum, though, and the nicer the place, the more people seemed to know who the Kearalei family was. They were a well-to-do family involved in low-level politics that had fled from Silrosia at the time of the Xetan war and the descent of the Fog to end up with family there in the city. That was about the extent of public knowledge that she was able to ascertain. Of course, some people were a little 'why are you asking' about the whole thing but get the right chatterbox and the right drunk and there it was.

As for the home, people seemed a little bit more vague about it but if she moved into the Forum district and did her best to pry, she'd be able to ultimately find her way to the Boulevard of Empress Michelle, on which several sizable homes were located, all of them fairly extravagant as far as town homes in the city went. The home of the elvish Kearalei family was surrounded by a bit of trees, a nice lawn, a curving driveway, and a very nice wrought iron fence. The home itself was three stories in height, more narrow than wide, with lovely stone architecture with a good deal of detail work.

It took her three days to find.

Diamea kept an eye back there to the carriage, she felt proud for how calm her sister looked even if she had just met her, a ghost from the past. She saw her looking and trying to locate her again to no avail. She watched her until she disappeared, eaten by the crowd. Time to get herself at work, she had a name and a place.

She didn't expect her data gathering to be simple, nor she expected to get information flowing without troubles. Still it was painful, feeling the time trickle away, moving from place to place, asking question and trying to look as unsuspicious as possible, she was just a lobely girl with a "cute" face asking random questions, right? She always avoided to let people see her weapons, nor she stayed too much in the same place. The less traces she left, the less people remember her, the better.

She felt lucky there were always people talking too much or drinking enough to let things slip, to let her make an idea of what she was searching about. Silrosia's elf, well-do-family involved in low-level politics. Refuges from Silrosia cause of the Fog. Mila probably was helping them at home and in raising their child. Still... she wasn't fully sure about the well-to-do. Just...

Three days. Three days of worrying, of feeling the time be faster than her. She hated each single night she went sleeping with still being too far away, with still too little information. But now she was there. Outside the Kearalei mansion. Mila was there, inside that house, so close but still so far away. She was tempted to go in, now and there, but she knew it wans't a good plan.

Even if her heart ached she remained in the streets for some more time: trying to looks as unsuspicious as possible she tried to observe the mansion, any activity, people coming and going.

Diamea remained outside, watching. Of course, there were not a whole lot of people just lingering outside of the houses on that road. Most people kept moving. It wasn't a place dense in shops or merchants but instead nice homes with iron fences and fancy carriages and horses moving along the roadway.

Staying hidden meant staying in some of the places with lesser vantage point or coming back when it was dark out, when she probably had far less to see. So it depended on how she did things--make frequent stops by, checking out the area as she went, or trying to just avoid being caught.

It wouldn't be easy!

All the same, she didn't have to wait long to catch a glimpse of her sister heading out of the compound with the same small child from before in hand. She was by herself, dressed for some sort of venture, the elvish child nattering on about whatever as they began wandering down the avenue.

Looks like Diamea didn't have to get fancy about hiding herself after all!

Given the place, nice fenced homes, carriages moving around and not much else, finding a spot to just sit and observe the Kearalei mansion wasn't much feasible. She had wished it could be that simple! But she had to adapt and she did so. She tried to mix things up a bit: she spent most of her time wandering around as causually as possible, sometimes she stopped around only to move again. And this again and again, even in front of different house to mislead any observer. Oh, and she did her best to look like she "belonged" to the place.

The fact that she was so close, her love for her little sister, made her endure everything. She would find or see something, even if she had to keep an eye on the house for days!

When she caught a glimpse of her sister heading out, she took a breath, something luck was on her side then! Silently she came closer and once she was sure it was her, she would follow at distance. Why her sister was out again? Where she and the child were going? She would wait to approach her, she would prefer to not have the elven child between her and Mila.
