[Aelyria Prime] ~Take Me Downtown~ (Adynirach)

Time Stamp:
Spring
Era XXIV

She woke earlier than the human. A groan softly escaped her lips as she turned on her side. Her eyes opened slowly to find the face of her lover on the pillow next to her. His mouth open with a little crust of drool forming on the side of his mouth, Ministra fell deeper in love. She didn't think it had been possible, but each time she looked at him it happened. There was something about him. She didn't know if she wanted to figure out what that something was. She felt maybe that would take away the magic.

Silently, she slipped out of bed and wrapped herself in one of his clean shirts. She looked in the drawer and scowled. One of them needed to do laundry.

Her bare feet slid across the floor as she made her way to the kitchen area. Water would be nice. She wondered what time it was as she poured herself a glass of the clear, life bringing liquid. She went to a window and peered outside. They'd slept most of the brightening away. A rumble in her stomach told her she was hungry. A thud in her head told her she needed a drink that wasn't water.

She gazed back at the slumbering man. She wanted to go out.

Climbing next to him on top of the covers, Ministra gently kissed him on the cheek. Whispering "Adynirach Thorne," in his ear. She pushed on his shoulder slightly but firm. She hoped to wake him easily, but she needed him awake nonetheless. The diminutive elf was going to waste away if she didn't eat soon.

Adyn groaned. Something was trying to break him from his slumber. So little of it did he ever receive that it was almost as if someone was trying to drag him up in chains. He shifted and tried to fight it.

There was a whisper in his ear. He murmured, finding it alluring and familiar. His eyes began to open.

"Already?" The heel of his hand pressed at his brow before he raked his hands through his wild hair. He looked like he had been hit by a horse and then the cart that was pulled behind it.

He looked around for the windows. Was it night yet? The daylight often exacerbated the hangovers that came after his sleep, so he was used to avoiding it as much as possible. He didn't have a hangover today, though... Oddly enough, he just felt groggy.

He was about to start that familiar craving for alcohol or Sparkle when blue-grey eyes settled on Ministra. He offered her a tired look of amusement.

"Are you dragging me away for something?"

She watched with glee as he slowly raised from his slumber. Her blue eyes saw the moment his opened and became a part of the world again. She grinned when he posed his question. The elf raised to her knees and put her hands on her hips. Cocking her head to the side, she scolded him, "It's almost dark out! I'm hungry."

She leaned over and hovered her face inches from his own. Her chocolate hair enveloped them both in a private veil. Ministra hooked one leg over him and climbed to where she could straddle his waist. Gently, she guided his hands to her back so he could hold her close to him. Only then did she find his lips with her own. That first kiss of the waking moment was sweet with the freshness of sleep. "I love you," she whispered into him.

Whipping her hair to the side, she rolled off him and leaped from the bed. She went to the kitchen and filled a glass of water for him. A shot of whatever random bottle he had lying around was poured for herself. She'd already had one glass of water. She was ready for more.

"I have old travel rations in the cupboard somewhere," he joked. It was much easier to only feed himself. There were evenings he had survived off old bread and very well-aged cheese, too tired - or too lazy - to scrounge up much else than that. He had never really minded.

He shifted his jaw left and right, open and closed, trying to work out the soreness that had settled there. His finger rubbed at his temples again. He had never risen very well.

He grunted slightly when she straddled him, knowing that he would not leave the bed if she stayed there for very long. He embraced her and accepted the softness of her kiss, drawing her in tightly despite the sleep lingering in his muscles. He had still not gotten tired of her hair. It was beautiful when it was loose, a cascade of soft chocolate waves that smelled light and feminine.

"Mm," he acknowledged her I-love-you with closed eyes, parting his lips to kiss her.

And then she was gone. He groaned at his misfortune.

"Alright, we'll eat then," he acquiesced, drawing the covers aside and planting his bare feet on the floor. He patted at the pockets in his breeches, having fallen asleep with a pack of cigarettes in them plenty of times. He found one.

He placed the stick in his mouth and leaned forward to light it, a round pendant on a silver chain falling slightly off of his bare chest. He looked up at her once it was lit.

"What part of town strikes your fancy?"

She leaned back against the counter with both glasses in her hands and stopped. An absent-minded grin rose to her face. Hair as wild as a breeze across a prairie, eyes the color of the ocean on a grim brightening, face as rugged as... Adyn. Ministra wasn't quite awake enough yet to make perfect similes about that man. But she knew she wanted to, and that feeling should count for something.

It was unheard of for her to think of anyone other than herself as beautiful. She was the epitome of grace. She was the standard to which all others should have been held. But this man toppled her from that pedestal. She was still a close second though.

She took her shot and put the glass down. The elf handed him the one filled with water and bid him to drink it. She climbed behind him and laced her arms through his so could rest her head on his shoulder and hold his chest in her hands.

A quick nibble on his ear and she whispered, "I want steak and potatoes. And wine, lots of wine. I want a darkening of fun, Adynirach Thorne." She rested her nose in his hair while he puffed on his not cigarette. She realized that she still didn't know what that thing was. She'd asked him once. And they had both forgotten to make sure she received the answer.

"I know a place," she offered. "They are discreet."

He took the water gratefully. He couldn't help but wonder if there was a nice way to tell her she shouldn't feel compelled to do so much for him. He had had servants, once upon a time.... He had never bat an eye at that before. But having grown so accustomed to the fact that everything he owned was earned by him alone... it was strange to have someone hand you a glass of water without you having to leave the bed. He looked into the glass with uncertainty.

He immediately forgot it when she embraced him. He enjoyed the tingle that her nibbles sent through him. He let the liquid run down his throat, soothing the dryness of sleep. A calloused hand rubbed at one of the arms around his chest as he chuckled at her words.

"A date? I'm good at dates. Our first one was a real treasure." He rolled his eyes, considering how they had ushered one another home, bruised and bloody. "Or was that technically our second?"

He turned his head towards his shoulder. "Discreet, hm? Are we going to be running away from someone again?" He quirked a wary brow at her.

"You are the best at dates," she chuckled into his ear. Bounding from the bed once more, she found the last clean shirt and threw it at his head. She had no idea where her energy was coming from. The last few cycles had past in a blur of blood, guts, and kisses. Each brightening when she fell into bed next to him, she thought she would never be able to move again. But then the darkenings came and she was ready to go. A switch had gone off in her and she actually looked forward to doing stuff.

Stuff. That strange word that people spoke. Stuff was mundane and normal. Stuff was what someone did to fill the time. Ministra found herself relishing in the stuff. Brushing her teeth, watching him over her shoulder; stuff. Sitting down and reading a book; stuff. Grabbing a glass of water for someone other than herself; stuff. It was mundane and it was boring and it was normal. She hadn't even thought about stabbing someone in almost two brightenings. The last thought didn't count. It was just to prove a point.

"Scaling high walls," her arms reached into the air as she shirked off Adyn's shirt. Clutching it to her breast she twirled with her wrist on her forehead, "A damsel in disguise." She pulled on her pants and winked at him, "The damsel is you."

Her own black shirt (replacing the one that had been ruined on their first [second?] date) was pulled over her head. "Amazing sword fights!" she exaggerated miming fencing. The elf sat on a chair and flipped her hair back so she could pull her boots on.

"Yes, Adynirach Thorne. I want a date. And discreet in case you get handsy at the table." she pulled her hair back into a tight bun and looked at him expectantly. "Are you ready?"

He caught the shirt that fell into his face, lifting an arm so it didn't catch fire from his cigarette. He stuffed it over his head, not bothering to smooth the collar down. He ruffled his hand through his hair, but that only seemed to make it worse.

He was rolling up his sleeves when she began to change. Cigarette dangling from his mouth and arms fussing with the folds of his tunic, his eyebrow shot upward, a dry look in her direction at her declaring him a damsel. "Yep," came his muffled, nonchalant response, "Sounds about right."

"You haven't seen me use a sword yet," he realized aloud as his boots went on, collar still unfolded and hair still a mess. He looked like he was only half dressing himself. "I'm quite good at it." He wiggled his brows at her, then bent to inspect a dagger before sheathing it quickly in his boot.

"Mm," came his familiar grunt once more, an acknowledgement of his handsiness. He would not deny it. He wrapped a belt around his waist and sheathed another blade, this one at the small of his back just beneath the end of his tunic. He then stood and stuffed his hands into his pockets.

"Do I look like I'm not ready to you?"

His grin was broad and crooked, surrounded by brightenings-old beard and a muss of uncombed hair.

She pursed her lips and grinned at him, shaking her head. Reaching for his collar, she smoothed it for him and caught herself squeezing his shoulders. He was still real. That was good. Her eyes drew up to the mess on top of his head. She wasn't even going to try.

She kissed him on the bridge of his nose and grabbed his hand. Pulling him out the door, she grabbed her daggers from the bookshelf, and shut the door behind them.

It was almost completely dark now. The familiar air of Prime's nightlife was beginning to settle. Ministra cinched the belt around her waist and was working on tying the bands around her thighs as she led him towards one of her favorite places to eat. It was an awkward movement, but she had vowed to practice doing these types of things while moving. It was a good skill to learn.

The tavern people were always good to her there. That meant they left her alone and served her in a timely manner. The food was decent too.

She walked in silence; figuring that would be what he wanted. She was inclined to oblige. Especially considering she had woken him up like a tornado and practically pushed him out of the door in his underwear. Though she did lace her fingers through his and hold onto his arm with her other hand. She walked with her body pressed against his side so she could hide her face in his shoulder from time to time. There were some people that she didn't want to see her. Plus, she enjoyed being close to him.

The entrance to the tavern was typical. Candlelight burned in the windows. The windows looked like they had been recently replaced. The wood around them was rotting and possibly had termites. As the pair came towards the door, a couple of men came bursting out tugging at each other's collars. One kicked the other to the ground. A group of others came rushing out after them yelling and screaming. One man was taking bets. Ministra beamed into Adyn's face.

She led him inside. All eyes fell on her. She let go of his hand and her mask fell upon her face. Her eyes grew cold and distant as they made contact with the man behind the bar. The man banged a cup loudly on the bar top and everyone returned to their own business. A table was cleared for them and they sat. She asked for a menu as she slid into a chair.

The interior stank of musk and stale beer. There were several card games happening. The majority of the patrons were male. The few females that were present appeared to have working. There was uneasy air, as if a fight could break out at any minute. They'd already witnessed one. Maybe another was on the way.

A bottle of red wine was delivered to the table. Ministra said nothing to the server but raised her eyes at Adyn so he could order his drink while they perused for food.

He had still not figured out the logistics of relationships. Were they meant to stroll around hand in hand, chatting about...? What, exactly? He couldn't deny that his cluelessness made him somewhat uncomfortable as he pondered whether or not to strike up conversation. There was not a great deal that Adyn did from day to day that was worthy of idle chat.

Besides, he had always enjoyed a silent stroll. He had made plenty of them in the darkenings he could not sleep. That had been before he had met Ministra. He had been alone, then.

He observed the streets around them, eyes peering along the sides of buildings and toward the skies. He was observing the little nooks and crannies, the escape routes, the windows and the doors. He was taking note of where certain streets seem to lead, what each path split away from. And all the while he did so with an elf's hand in his, his lips nursing on a cigarette.

Blue eyes observed the tavern, too, when they entered. He looked at the escapes around the room, the arrangment of the tables. He brushed over the collection of patrons and the manner in which they moved.

He took hold of his cigarette and let his now free hand slip into his pocket where his fingers twitched idly against the seam. His air of nonchalantness usually melded with the crowds, although it had earned him an irritated threat now and again. He didn't seem to mind Ministra slipping into a new role - his carefree attitude had left him free to adapt and meld.

He eyed the gamblers at the table as he seated himself, recalling the tournament that had earned him employment in Ziel Aerca. It had been a far cry from the debts that had landed him, beaten and bloody, in Port Alyxandrya's Gut.

He kicked his feet onto another chair and relaxed in his own, cigarette trailing smoke into the musty tavern air. He asked for an ale, accustomed to the alcohol being weak and watered down in places like this. Easier to keep a clear head that way.

She sighed as she poured her glass of wine. Adyn's beer came to the table and was promptly slapped in front of him. A bit of the head fell onto the table. The elf glared at the serving wench who apologized and wiped it with the apron over her skirt.

Her eyes rolled when she saw he propped his feet upon another chair. Ministra was all about having fun, but this was a bit much. She kept the words to herself though.

A fight erupted at one of the card tables. A large orc the color of puke grabbed a rodenti by the tail and lifted him into the air. A bloodshot eye screamed into his face, "You callin' me a cheat?" The rodenti seemed to quake. But still was able to retort, "No, I'm callin' you a dirty cheat!" His little fists started flurry of jabs at the orc's face.

The orc roared and blasted the fur of the rodenti into ripples that contoured his entire body. "Let me at ya'! Put me down and fight like a' orc!" The orc dropped the creature with a thud and stood. The rodenti, who barely came to his knees, promptly started biting them.

"Feth you! Ow! Ow! Ow! Stop it! I dun wanna play wit' you neway!" The gigantic orc stormed out of the tavern, knocking a few people's drinks over in the process. "Anyone wanna take his place at the table?"

A dwarf with a red beard and bald head made his way to the duo's table. Ministra glared at him, willing him to leave. But he didn't seem to notice. "E-e-xcuse me. I've been down on my luck for some time now. Would you have an spare shields?"

The elf sipped on her wine and cocked an eyebrow at Adyn. He hadn't said a word to her since leaving his home. She would damned if she broke the silence.

One might have wondered if the Sparkle also numbed the rogue's mental reflexes, with how little he moved when the mug dropped on the table before him. He cocked a brow at the wench as he lounged there in his chair, the cigarette teetering slightly as he idly moved his fingers. He exhaled as he observed her, neither an accusation nor an acceptance in his eyes. He continued to watch her as she left.

His attention turned then to the debacle that had started somewhere beyond. He took a sip of his ale and watched the ratta make a spectacle of himself before promptly driving the orc away from the table. He might have laughed if he could have been bothered to. So many stories could be forged at a gambling table, but it was a wonder he had not yet seen them all.

He sighed a cloud of blue smoke as they were approached again. The tavern was full of distractions tonight. His eyes trailed upward from the table, landing on the beggar's face.

"Wrong place to be asking, my friend," he said, his voice low and unconcerned amidst the din of the patrons. Despite this he somehow managed to produce a few copper shields, stacking a few of them on the table with deft fingers.

"Fortunately for you, the gentlemen over there are looking for a new player." He slid the coins over to the dwarf and nodded his head in the ratta's direction.

"Go deal yourself in."

Although the rogue did not smile as he took a slow drag of his strange cigarette, there was a twinkle of amusement in his eyes. Perhaps the dwarf had some initiative to change his situation. Or perhaps he would take the safe road and slip out into the night.

It would be interesting to discover.

The change in Adyn's demeanor did not go unnoticed by the elf. He still hadn't bothered to speak to her. Where was the man who whispered his secrets to her? Where was the one who couldn't get enough of her touch? Who the feth was this? Why did she care so much? What was with all these questions? Her mind screamed at him. She wanted to slip the table and tell him to look at her.

Perhaps it had been a mistake thinking that she would be able to do stuff with him. Perhaps all he wanted was someone to lie in his bed with him while he slept. She shouldn't have even bothered. She should have slipped out on her own. At least then she could have maybe reaped some souls or something. Her brow furrowed at him as she leaned back in her chair and considered her options.

She loved him. Was it enough to endure this though? She felt wounded. If she stayed, this would be her life. A man who caresses her at home and ignores her in the outside world. Well, she could play that game too.

Ministra stood and took her bottle and glass. The red dwarf was making his way to the card table when she leaned into his ear and growled, "Scram." His beady eyes widened and he scurried out the door.

She slammed her things onto the table and sat. The rodenti, a lutran, and a male human looked at her with fright in their eyes. "You? Y-you never..." She shot him a stare that would have shot daggers into his stupid face. His mouth closed and he told the lutran to deal her in.

She had no idea what she was doing. She'd never gambled before. Mostly she just wanted to get away from Adyn for a moment and let her anger run its course. She smiled at the human, who was all too happy to smile back. He ran his fingers nervously through his dark hair and wiped his hands on his breeches before picking up his cards. "The game is Alouette," the rodenti announced as the lutran dealt. Ministra did not listen to the rest of the rules and the creature's voice didn't carry far enough for the rogue to hear.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a few shields for her wager, scowling the entire time.

The rogue was absolutely oblivious to the rage in his companion. He had settled into the comfort of his world as he had always known it. He had been lost in all the motions and the details of the world, attempting to catalog and categorize them all in his mind.

His eyes fell on her when she stood, took her wine, and left. A look of bewilderment briefly crossed his face. He managed to take another drag on the cigarette as he watched her approach the dwarf and tell him to leave. Well, there went the curious game and all the coppers he had lent to him. So much for that, it seemed.

It occurred to him then that he might have made her angry. He could not have fathomed why. He realized only then that he had not spoken very much, and remembered how much it seemed to have troubled her before. A flash of irritation coursed through him. Had she expected him to coo into her ear as the men pummelled each other around them?

He realized then that the irritation was more with himself than with her. He wished he had been born a mystic.

Still, the stubborn man did not go to her. He wanted to learn more about the game she played - and not the one there at the table. He observed her in the distance as she dealt herself in, speaking words he couldn't hear.

Perhaps the elf would not look back at him. If she did, she would see him watching her with solemn curiosity.

Ministra picked up her nine cards and stared at them as if they were written in some mystical language she had never seen. She eyed the others at the table and saw they were sorting theirs somehow. She narrowed her eyes and did the same. Except she didn't know what she was sorting, so she just moved the cards around to make it look like she did.

The human noticed that she was struggling and leaned in to whisper in her ear, "Kings are high, Aces are low. He's your partner," he indicated the lutran sitting across from her. "If he is my partner, then how do I win the money?" she whispered back at him. The man chuckled softly and answered, "Whichever of the two of you wins the most tricks. Just try to place the highest card of the same suit. It's easy, you'll be ok. And I'll help you if you get stuck." The elf nodded, and the human sat back up in his chair.

As the game was being set up and played, the bar wench returned to Adyn's side. "Did you decide what you'd like to eat?" She noticed the man staring at the card game. She also noticed that the bottle of wine she'd brought to the table was missing.

"Lost your date, didja? Don't you worry none, many have tried, few have succeeded, even fewer have lived to tell about it." The portly woman with a mane of fiery red hair patted the rogue on the shoulder commiserating him on his poor luck. "About that order?" she was just trying to do her job.

A laugh of triumph floated over to Adyn's table as he could see Ministra race her fists in the air with glee. The three around her clapped as she claimed her first trick. She'd laid down an ace and told them meant she won that hand. None of them disagreed with her.
