Bones is a malevolent Minion

[Vers] Personal Development (WAAAAAAAGH please)

TS: Summer of Era XXIII

Having spent a rather lengthy period in the Phondra Woods, learning to be on his own, Bones had come to realise that strength was derived not from physical prowess alone, but equally so from knowing what to do in which situation. It set him apart from the average ogre, to which ultraviolence was the solution to every imagineable problem, and he was convinced that his diverging beliefs would help him rise amongst the ogres in the Sherian. He now believed that he needed to be as cunning and calculative as he could be, unnatural as this felt at times.

Vers had formerly been a city of humans and halflings, Bones had been made to understand by some of his elders, but he knew it only as the base of operations of the orcs. He was traveling towards it in order to once more get an audience with WAAAAAAAGH, who the ogre had met once before when humans had crossed the border into the Sherian. As far as he knew, the Warlord was the one leading orcs, goblins, and trolls, and that made him the most significant force in this part of Telath.

If Bones could prove to WAAAAAAAGH that he was strong and capable, he could, over time, gain the orc's favour. The ogre imagined he could serve the warlord; he could help make the Sherian stronger, which was good for all its inhabitants. In the process, he could grow more powerful and learn to one day lead his brethren to glory.

As he approached the heavily fortified nothern gates of the city, club on his back and head raised high, Bones inspected the walls through the slits of the wicked-looking steel mask that hinted at his ability to meddle with death and decay. He wasn't familiar with Vers, and questions filled his large head. Did ogres make up part of the warlord's army? Would there be any at the city, surrounded by orcs and trolls?

Vers had, apparently, once been a thriving mage-city of the Empire. While there were probably a lot of other things that happened to the place, the civil war in Sherian sealed its fate and brought it to ruin. For a long while several factions had vied to be its rulers in the meantime, but ultimately the Warlord had managed to drive out everybody hostile to him and establish himself as the owner of the city. Vers had since been fashioned into a mighty fortress, the first line of defense against the Imperial presence to the north. The northern sections were among the most heavily defended, with numerous layers of heavy fortifications, death traps, and mighty defensive weaponry brought to bear.

It was a good thing today that the boyz on the walls were a bit smarter than the usual lot, otherwise they probably would have just shot Bones first and asked questions later. Instead, they noticed that he didn't look like no stinking uumie, and so asked the questions first this time.

"OI. WHO YOU?"

"Bones of the Black Ooze tribe," the ogre announced in Orcish, his voice thundering up the fortified walls. "I seek to bring glory to the Warlord and help defend the Sherian lands against humans and undead." He hadn't really prepared much for a job interview; he was an able warrior and had assumed that those were welcome to join the Horde as long as they weren't human, elf, or dwarf.

"I can fight," he elaborated, raising himself to his full twelve feet height. "And I can curse my enemies." That was rare for an ogre, and Bones wouldn't really manage an explanation when pushed. He'd been taught how to cast spells but didn't pretend to understand the mechanics behind it.

HM. Black Ooze tribe? It seemed like the orcs on the walls deliberated for a bit as to whether or not anybody knew what that was. Well, obviously the Black Ooze Tribe was the Black Ooze tribe. That was a pretty stupid question. Right then, they managed to get that sorted out.

Cursing enemies? "YOU A SHAMAN?" the orc yelled back. "OR YA JUST YELL AT 'EM?" There was a difference between cursing in the verbal sense, and cursing in the voodoo black magic sense.

Considering the size and significance of the tribe, it wasn't likely that anyone had heard about the ogres of the Black Ooze except for, perhaps, other ogres. Some of Bones' brethren had fought in the many battles that had resulted in the liberation of the Sherian, but altogether they weren't an ambitious lot.

"Not a shaman," answered the ogre. "I cast... spells. Take the enemy's strength and throw biting slime in their faces." With the mass of undead roaming the southern part of the province, Bones decided against mentioning how he could bring the dead back to life, if only for a little while. "A... mage..." That was the word, wasn't it?

"WE GOTTA SHAMAN OVER 'ERE," the orc yelled to his compatriots, all of them completely ignoring what Bones had said about spellcasting and mages or whatever. He was one of 'em weirdboyz! Shamans!

The only way to deal with a weirdboy was to send another one at 'em. "WAIT 'ERE, WE'LL GET ANOTHA SHAMAN FOR YA."

Nothing to do but wait, then. And wait. And wait. Eventually they found somebody and brought him up to the gates. It was one of the Mob's various mages, this one a necromancer. He glanced over at the ogre under the walls.

"'Ow much magic you be knowin'?" What level of mage was Bones?

Bones had never been called weird, and it was quite doubtful whether he'd liked it if called to his face without the proper context. Still, they were all on the same team, so a nickname wouldn't really be a problem. It wasn't like his parents had called him Bones, after all. That had come only after he'd brought something back to life that should have stayed dead. He decided not to argue with being called a shaman, since it apparently spurred the orcs into action.

He waited, and then waited some more. By the time the mage arrived, the ogre had sat down and was nearly nodding off until the voice called out to him. Standing, he inspected the newcomer, and believed he recognised something in the mage. "I can throw acid at my enemy, take their strength, and poison them," Bones explained, not sure what he was being asked. "I can do this three times before getting weakened myself, and three more each time the suns have set."

Depending on personal preferences, that made Bones either a L1 or a n00b. A very large one though, with a spiked club.

Hmmm. "Sounds like ye just be startin' out with this magic stuff den," the shaman noted, rubbing his chin. That wasn't necessarily a problem, it was just something that was good to know. Somebody who knew a little bit of magic was already pretty good, considering how few such people there were. Plus, he was a big ogre! Even if he didn't know a lot of magic, raw physical strength was always a plus.

"Why ye be comin' to us?" the older orc decided to ask. "What's wrong with ye Black Ooze tribe?" Why seek out the Warlord instead of just doing his own thing?

"Aye," said Bones, who had been taught how to wield these supernatural powers fairly recently. He'd not seen his tutor, a mysterious dark Elf with an odd sense of humour, after his unbinding ritual and a handful of lessons. The orc's response did trigger an interesting thought though. "Are you also a... magician? Is it possible to learn more... ways to use these powers?" That would certainly open up a world of possibilities.

"The Black Ooze tribe are... sleepy. And small. They remain in the mound and are happy. Bones left them so that he can grow stronger, and come back to... wake them up. To lead them to glory!" Although he struggled with the language, the ogre's determination could easily be seen. "The Warlord is powerful, and leads his armies. Bones wants to join him, kill the humans, and become stronger so that he can one day lead the Black Ooze tribe."

A magician? "Datz wun way ter put it." Best that Bones learned the terms 'shaman' and 'weirdboy,' though, if he wanted to fit in. Then again, considering the fact that he'd be considered weird, maybe it made sense for him to use those different terms of his. "'Course it's possible. Always sumthing ter lern!"

Ah, so it was just a matter of ambition. That made the shaman laugh. "Sownz loike ya might be a gud fit afta awl, den. Tell ya wot, come wif me. We'll go to talk wif da Warlord, see wot ya kan du." The orc stroked his chin, beckoning for the ogre to follow as they made their way through the city.

"Ow much o' theez lands have ya seen? Where ya bin before?" How well-traveled was this ogre?

The necromancer, or shaman/weirdboy, seemed pleased with the answer, which was good in Bones' books. He promptly followed the orc into the fortified city, which stood as proof of the greenskins' victory over the Imperials. The defenses that had been added since then made it look proper orcish.

"Only east of the mountains, and mostly north of this city." the ogre explained when asked about how much he'd seen of the world. "I was in the woods of Phondra, exploring and killing humans." That had been his first prolongued period away from his tribe, and although it hadn't been easy, Bones had felt himself grow stronger.

"How long have you been here?" he asked the weirdboy.

The defenses hadn't been the only thing in the city that had been built up. The orcs had slowly taken the ruins of Vers and began turning it into a right proper ork... place. The incessant ringing of metal as the smiths got to work, the sounds of the bouncy creatures bouncing around, the smell of the bouncy creatures bouncing around, the explosions from the workshops scattered around the city. This was just as much a home as it was a fortress for the orcs stationed within it.

"Dis city? We conqwereded it, eh, jus' before it was cold. Nub too long." Just last autumn was when Vers had fallen under their control. They'd managed to quite rapidly build it up into what might have been an unassailable fort - at least from the north, anyway.

So the ogre hadn't really seen much of the world. Not that much of an issue! The shaman had just been curious was all. Whatever the case, he led Bones over to where the Warlord was. Currently he was on the testing grounds for new equipment, fiddling with their Hot Shootas - primitive cannons carried on the shoulder that could fire fiery explosives.

BOOM.

A straw target on the end of the field was blown up, and a cheer went up from the assembled Mekz. The Hot Shoota hadn't blown up in the Warlord's face!

The ogre's presence didn't go unnoticed for long, though. Especially since he was a pretty big one. Soon enough the Warlord wandered over, pointing at Bones. "Who dis?"

Having grown up in a small community in the middle of a province that had been destroyed not long ago, Bones marvelled at the sight of Vers. He'd never seen much of Orckon, and had never visited Ire. For the ogre, Vers was the largest and most imposing city he'd ever laid eyes on. He slowed down as they moved through the gates, inspecting and admiring the walls and defenses. He tried to picture how things would look if anyone was foolish enough to attack the city from this side, and how it could be defended from the walls.

"It looks strong," he told the necromancer. They must have been working on it ever since capturing it, adding metal fortifications wherever they could. Amazed, he looked left and right to see what the orcs and other greenskins were up to. Imposing as Bones could be on first sight, he felt humbled when walking through Vers. He was truly a smalltown ogre in a big city, and he took in the sights like a proper tourist all the way to meeting the Warlord.

His eyes grew wide as they arrived at the firing range, where a straw dummy was obliterated from a distance. It was like a bow and arrow but with a massive explosion, and without an arrow. It wasn't much like a bow and arrow, actually, but Bones did not have a lot to compare it with. "Very impressive," he told his guide, before his eyes settled on the Warlord. WAAAAAAAGH was shorted than Bones by a good bit, but he made up for it in sheer power. The orc was an impressive sight to behold, with or without hand cannon.

"Bones of the Black Ooze tribe, who live in the marshes. I want to fight, and your armies must fight a lot. Undead and puny humans. Bones can fight for you."

"It is strong." Even if the other sides of the city were weaker in comparison, they were all well-fortified in their own right. The Warlord had made sure not to skimp on that sort of thing.

Big ogre!

"Kay." Seemed reasonable.

...

...

...

What, like right now? Hm, all right. "Why don'tcha come along wiff us to Orckon fer a bit, den. Buncha undead folks out dere. Every now n' again we go out n' smash a bunch of 'em!" Slowly, they thinned out the herd of undead that surrounded what was once the greatest of the greenskin cities.

Right now? Sure, why not? Bones was curious about seeing the Warlord in battle, even against undead--who tended to moan about brains while shuffling around, if Bones had heard correctly. Also, the ogre had never been to Orckon before and he was keen to see what it looked like. Anything he could learn on such a small expedition would be beneficial, really.

"Smashing skeletons and rotting corpses sounds good," he said, lifting his club and smacking the wood into his empty palm. A wide grin formed behind the steel mask that covered his face. "Lead the way, Warlord." Bones wasn't sure whether his magic worked against the undead, but he could try that too, when he wasn't crushing them with his club.
