Apparently he had missed quite a lot at the tent with the legionaire speaking to the Imperial Grace so casually that it even made Aerys jealous that one who did not show much standing in the political or noble world could do such a thing, though he reminded himself that she was indeed a decurion, which technicallymade her superior to him in every way.

When she left though, the half elf couldn't just sit idly and forget his own duties, after all he had done the more urgent tasks, such as setting up camp and securing its perimeter, organizing the supplies and making sure that each member of the men that marched with the crimson and gold was battleready and thus supplied with adequate equipment and insured that their rations were present.

"Your Grace," The young man immediately stepped forth, beating his chest in a salute to the man who ruled under the crimson-gold banners as much as the empress did under the banners of the legions themselves. "We have readied the men with their equipment and their tents. The supplies have been accounted for and are safeguarded by two full troops at a six-candlemark interval, the perimeter of the camp has been sucerured with sufficient guard posts to ensure no one enters without being noticed."

Looking at the knights and the Baron's most trusted staff present, Aerys felt quite impressed, even a bit overwhelmed by these men and women who have served the crimson-gold for much longer than he had and yet, he could not refrain himself from speaking up, as he felt obliged to voice his concerns among these men and women, not to defy or besmirch them, but simply to rely on their expertise and great wisdom in these matters.

"Your Grace, esteemed lords and ladies, if I may be so bold," The young man gave a silent, yet courteous nod to the men and women present, before even starting to voice his opinion. A procedure he found necessary to show his understanding of his position, certainly in that place. "I apologize, but I overheard your conversation with the decurion and I wonder if it is truly wise to follow the legions to the Greenwoods. Should it not be wiser, now with the absence of the Titan of Aslan to rally and organize the mercenary companies under your banners?"

For a moment he remained silent, as if contemplating what he was going to say next. "Your Grace, I have seen the tactics of the legions first hand. The leaders of the legions are bound by antiquated tactics and a flawed morality and sense of superiority. In combat against a foe such as the orcs, with a more disorganized approach to war, they tend to rely on basic tactics and go with it despite the odds or information they get, completely transparant and expectable tactics. What if the orcs aren't as disorganized as we are led to believe, in times like this securing order among the mercenaries might prove more useful than relying on the legions."

Spyre Kla'teluth Kaldres is a benevolent Adventurer

Spyre couldn't help but let out a small chuckle as Jade seemed to have a preference for the mission he had thought she would. As welcomingly complex as she could be some days, most days she was extremely straightforward. And there was something wonderful in that simplicity, a simple truth that drew the elf to her, she knew who she was.

He gave a nod to the guard. "Thank you for the information." Just because the man hadn't exactly been the most polite, well that was no reason for Spyre not to show some curtesy. That particular line of thought died in his mind as Jade decided to elbow him along with a taunt.

"Well of course you will." He smiled back at Jade before it disappeared into a look of mock surprise. "Unless you are saying that you won't be claiming the ears Emrys earns as your own" He tried to remain slightly stoic in his own taunting but couldn't help the edges of his lips starting to raise up.

It wasn't long before he let out a chuckle, shaking his head partially at himself and just how hard it was to keep a straight face when joking. The truth of the fact was even if Jade didn't claim any ears earned by Emrys she probably would still beat his own collection. Despite fighting with only a staff and throwing daggers, Jade by herself was still a force to be reckoned with, as he had learned the handful of times she had tried to beat some sense of staff fighting into him.

"Still.... the Corsairs. Odd name for a group fighting on land isn't it?" He moved back away from the guard and the sign, their own decision having been made so others could stand around and bug the man. "It would seem we have part of a brightening to kill."

A trip on foot? Well that suited her just fine. The Aslanite however, was oddly perturbed by it. He had two working feet, didn’t he? She began to drift, letting her thoughts carry her somewhere else as he complained. Loudly. Did Orcs ride horses? The thought was irrationally worrying. That would have to be a big horse. Was there such a thing? Or maybe, an Orc would just eat it. Did Orcs eat horses? Perhaps they did.

She mused on the thought a moment longer before her perched nimrban nipped at the post in her ear, allowing Liahal to become aware, and acutely so, of the creature’s presence. The tiny beast was ill-mannered to say the least, but the duo shared a mutual distaste for authority and an affinity for sweets. This was considered viable enough company, as far as Liahal was concerned. Lavender fingers dipped into her pocket to retrieve a wrapped candy, in which Rauko nabbed with greedy talons. Such a glutton, her tiny beast was.

Did Orcs eat sweets? Perhaps she’d find out.

And the Aslanite, he was still talking. What was the saying? All work and no play… Turns you into, well, that apparently. She rather fancied him otherwise, and her eyes lingered as he left — disappointed to see him go, but otherwise pleased to watch him walk away.

I need a 12 step program, honestly...

A flip of the coin. The coin said that Sheng should go to Greenwoods. Sheng shrugged his shoulder at this choice. It did not matter. It was a good chance for Sheng to practice his skills. Maybe he would practice his unarmed combat skills using the orcs.

Sheng proceeded to ask about the mission to Greenwoods. Was there going out and that Sheng could follow?

The guard informed them of what they could choose to do if they wished to survive which was wait till the morning to set out. The Corsairs would be heading up this particular mission it seemed and though, as Spyre said, it was not a land-based sort of name, she didn’t much care. She merely shrugged when Spyre made a comment on it. “I have no qualms with dark dwarves, I hate people the same regardless of race.” She smirked at Spyre. “Some less than others.”

Would the Corsairs like having a drake rider on their mission? Some didn’t trust the fire drake or the rider but they had proven more than a few times how handy they could be, especially when it came to violence which this surely would. They were going to the greenwood to kill some orcs. Jade had to wonder if she had to spare the forest because if not, they could save a lot of time and just burn the forest around them. That was just her of course.

Spyre commented on how they had a brightening to kill and Jade nodded. “I wonder if they have a place where we can get something to drink. Being sober the darkening before a mission just doesn’t seem right.”

Gye’ron & Liahal:

The Guard simply stood there with the same sneer on his face as Gye’ron’s tirade washed over him, seeming to find the whole situation quite entertaining even as it went on and on. It was almost as if the Imperial Legion was actively trying to get the collected Mercenaries killed - but then what General would think to treat people with such active distain for their wellbeing?

Straylor & Aerys:

The Legion wasn’t moving. They were very, very pointedly not moving. Everything that Straylor and his people could see showed that the Legion of Phondra was fully bunkered in and maintaining their post upon the southern entrances between the Sherian and Prime Province. All activities so far within the region involved the collected mercenaries who were being sent abroad into the Sherian on various missions of increasingly suicidal properties.

Dalia:

“Sergeant.” the Legionnaire replied with a faint degree of wariness. Lauryl. Dalia was a very long way from home indeed, and odds given the Legion she claimed to be from? She was either earmarked as a casualty of war during the Xet Alliance or a deserter. Either way, both of these were quite above his pay-grade. The old fifty crowns a cycle just didn’t stretch anywhere nearly as far as it once had.

Still he shook his head, “The General has given very specific orders that he isn’t to be disturbed while this… rabble… is at our doorstep.” the Legionnaire added in more conciliatory tones. A few words spoken to his companion on the gates to cover the watch and then a gesture for Dalia to follow. “Colonel Tindomerel however might be more willing. If you’ll come with me, Sergeant?”

Spyre & Jade:

Name down as a potential candidate and a brightening to kill! Off to find a drink as tomorrow there was hunting to be done!

Sheng:

Greenwoods it was! His decision coming on the tail-end of an Esh’lahier making a similar enquiry. Namely that they’d be headed out at first light on the following brightening and that a group of Dark Dwarves going by the name the ‘Corsairs’ would also be partaking of that assignment.

OOC;
The two threads will be up shortly, I have the following? Feel free to build new threads in the Phondra area, and I’ll be keeping this subb’d (naturally, ‘cause stuff is still happening). My focus though is on stuff like the Legions, not gambling/drinking/chatting though so… yeah >_>

“Thank you, Deurion”, Straylor said to Dalia as he watched the wood elf wander toward the fortress.

“Do you think they’ll budge?”, asked Marcos, his eyes narrowing after the legionary’s lithe figure disappear among the rabble. “These mercs -- they’re not here for anything but coin. If I was the Imperatis charged with securing this region, I’d have done the same.”

“Send these sellswords to die?”, Rizal asked of the older knight. “They might be disloyal but they don’t deserve to die for nothing.”

“Very few men die for something”, voiced the Baron as he glanced between the two men. “Most of us only live long enough to become old. We stay put until we hear from the Decurion. If we’re lucky, we might have more insight into the situation.” Though sending men to scout and purge the Greenwoods sounded like a recipe for disaster. The orcs must know that they were gathering as much as the legions knew their movements.

What if all they managed to do was poke at a hornet’s nest?

Aerys’ sudden soliloquy interrupted the Baron’s thoughts. His gaze narrowed toward the squire while he considered the boy’s words. For someone so young and inexperienced, the squire had a point. Though he was naive to believe that mercenaries ‘united’ against anyone’s banner. “Very well”, said Straylor with a nod. “Ask around and see if there are any companies left for hire. Negotiate a suitable rate for the sellswords remaining and have them fight for me. If the Legions aren’t moving out, then we might as well do so in force.”

“I still hate the idea of spreading our forces so thin. Especially across the Greenwoods. Who knows what kind of monsters or traps those foul beasts have laying in wait…”

"As you command, Your Grace," Aerys nodded, slamming his fist against his chest in a salute before making a bow towards the Baron and his council.

Without further ado, the young man walked through the Leonardes camp, gathering a handful of footmen to make sure the mercenaries were more than convinced that the half elf indeed wore the colors of House Leonardes truthfully. When he had his handful of men, Aerys went from company to company that his Imperial Grace, Baron Straylor Leonardes was calling upon those who were willing to be hired by his house rather than the legions, claiming that he'd pay two silver shields more than the Legion was paying for each and every sellsword and mercenary.

"Why waste your lives and talents for a legion that does not value you men and women forwho and what you are and what you can do?" He preached, hoping with every company that he visited and that was interested, that they'd agree with how bad the Legion's leading men were treating them. "House Leonardes values all your qualities and wants to employ you, so that we can face this threat together, not as employee and employer, but as brothers in arms. If you are interested, I request you send a representative with me."

As a lowly decurion, Dalia hadn't had much of an expectation of seeing the actual commander in chief around here, and so she simply nodded when the legionnaire offered for her to see the colonel. Their wariness of her was rather grating, but the elf had the self-assurance to know that she was right (so said the papers in her pockets, at any rate!) and they were wrong, and was pragmatic enough to know that suspicion in these cases was a better policy than open-armed welcome.

In any event, she didn't need the trust of these two gate guards, she merely needed them to take her to someone higher up the food chain - which they were prepared to do.

"Very well," Dalia clambered off her horse (not looking down - it still seemed such a long way to her) and followed the guard through. She kept quiet as they walked, not really given to chit-chatting; instead she spent the time looking about her with interest, sizing up the outpost, its men, and its differences to her 'home' in Lauryl.

Straylor & Aerys:

Were the Mercenaries willing to work for the Baron Leonard? That was a very obvious yes that only had one little hiccup Aerys was to discover. Namely that as good as Straylor’s reputation was for being ‘good for payment’ as the former Governor, Consul and Merchant Baron of Carmelyan? These were highly practical souls.

Namely, that as Aerys moved through the encampments – warbands numbering from a dozen people to potentially several score – the primary issue seemed to be logistics and payment.

The average seemed to be an expectation of a single silver piece per brightening when outside combat, and a second silver piece per brightening when inside combat. And payment would be one done in coin immediately – no IOU’s or Bank Promissory notes. Mercenaries expected payment; there was to be no loyalty or honor or the greater good here.

They’d fight for anyone with the coin, but first one had to have the coin on hand.

Dalía:

Wandering through the compound, Dalía was to discover that the Legion based at Phondra walked the line between absolute discipline and order, and a certain laxity to certain standards. Namely, the uniforms and maintenance were abysmal – much repaired and almost seeming like they’d been looted off battlefields ranging from Aelyria Prime’s old grey livery through to Sherian and Centripax alike. Places where the Legions had been hit hard under the leadership of Empress Audrey de Lylles and Prince L’Evienne respectively.

On the other hand, where the personal appearance was lacking (oh so many soldiers were neglecting their shaving kit), they were still going through weapons drills and patrols were being maintained and all doors were showing guard postings.

It was as they were moving through one open court and towards the weapons practice grounds that Dalía would find a score of Imperial Guardsmen going through javelin drills under the eye of a short Elf; a little broad at the shoulder and wearing a grey goat wool cloak that was incredibly tattered at the hemline. Mousy grey hair and an Elfin longsword at the waist.

“Sir.” The guard accompanying Dalía called out, “Sergeant from the Gracelands to see you.” With the Elf turning around; pale grey skin and rather homely features. Middle aged and Nimalni. One Khalonderial ‘Nightingale’ Tindomeral looking at Dalía quizzically. Somber, as if he’d just had a death in the family.

[top]”Mo' money, mo' mercenaries”

The Baron couldn’t travel and supply with so many men without keeping a war chest nearby. There was coin to be had in exchange for more bodies and a better chance at surviving outside the legionary fortress. Straylor trusted the sellswords about as far as he could throw them. But in his experience, practical souls were generally well-suited for dire situations.

Paperwork was drawn up, contracts mostly, with the leader of each mercenary company issued standard documents. With the money issue settled, it was now just a matter of logistics. Payment was a non-issue until it was. And Straylor made that very, very clear. The mercs were paid immediately after each mission.

They moved made toward the Optia Greenwoods now before the other adventurers got all the good stuff.

As ordered, Aerys would follow the Leonardes forces under Straylor's command, ready to get into some action before there was no more action to be had at all.

Dalia looked around herself curiously, if a bit surreptitiously, as the guard led her forward through the compound. The state of the soldiers here seemed not far different from that she had already grown accustomed to in Lauryl - all the legions had had to cut corners here and there - but, at the same time, even more pronounced. She found the odd piece-meal clothing and equipment somewhat disconcerting, even if the precision of the maneuvers the men were executing was more than up to snuff; while substance and training were crucial, appearances were important too. She was reminded of one of her father's old sayingings to the effect that appearances could be deceiving, but usually not by much.

It pleased her much more, on the other hand, to be confronted by a member of her own race when the guard finally stopped. Dalia had met a lot of representatives of the many races of the Empire both within and outside of the legions, but still, there was an affinity to one's own kind that probably would never go away. She tried not to show it, though, copying the gravity of the Colonel as she stuck up her chin - one of the good things about speaking to her own kind was that she didn't feel as terribly short as she often did when speaking to humans, or other human-sized races - and reported: "Sergeant Dalia of the twenty-seventh legion," she introduced herself again out of politeness, "On leave by special request to support the forces of Baron Leonardes, with the purpose of pushing further into Sherian. Being from -" Dalia hesitated; the word choice seemed wrong, such as it was, since of course she was, originally, from Sherian; so she corrected herself: "Being stationed far from here, it seemed prudent to liaise and learn of the legions' position - intentions - before proceeding."

Straylor & Aerys:

Money talked.

With so many mercenaries drawn to Phondra Keep, it was actually proving to put a considerable dent in Straylor’s own finances. Enough so, that he was quite easily burning through an entire Season’s worth of income from the properties in what had once been known as Carmelyan. Enough so, that the Merchant Baron would have to (perhaps) be a little thrifty until Summer came and the markets at Trysvale, Candaceburg, Medonia and Aelyria Prime opened once more for trading of high yield grains.

It also meant that now Straylor had almost four hundred mercenaries under his banner if he so willed it; not quite as extensive force as the Imperial Legion - but a force to be reckoned with all the same. And conveniently bypassing the Laws of the Imperium that forbade standing armies outside the Legions and City Guard from existing. Mercenaries! Adventuring Troupes! Completely Legal… just, few could afford the expense Straylor managed with relative ease.

To the Optia Greenwoods!

Dalía:

A puzzled look, only for the Nimalni to give a grave “My condolences for the loss of your Legion. Far too many lives needlessly spent on conflicts that could have been avoided.” Nightingale replied, Dalía having the Guardsman’s complete attention even as another guard was running towards them.

“The intentions are simple, Sergeant. We’re here to guard, not start another war like what happened last time the Greenskins of Orckon tore into the Sherian.” the Elf replied easily, ignoring the shouts of the approaching guard calling out ‘Colonel!’ One problem at a time, and for now, Dalía had his attention. Not least of which was the rarity in seeing another of the People. Not since Major General Balthazar D’Vorin had Nightingale actually met another Nimalni within the Imperium; the novelty making for loquacious dialogue rather than his usual spartan fare.

“Sherian is a lost cause. We don’t have the manpower to reclaim the territory while the Xet Alliance is holding the attention of almost half of the Legions in Lauryl. Plain and simple. No, we’re here to stop the mustering Orc Horde from pushing into Candaceburg - the Imperium simply cannot afford to have the crops destroyed by a splinter force. The Longest Winter was bad, but the loss of Candaceburg would only result in rampant starvation throughout the lands.” the Elf went on, scowling as the ‘Colonel!’s from the guard were proving to be even more insistent.

Enough that the guard gave up and blurted out the message, “Sir! The Baron! He bought out all of the mercenaries. They’re pushing into the Greenwoods!”

It was an old word, deeply elvish and less than suitable for decent company. That which Nightingale blurted out? Oh so impolite.

The twin golden griffins of House Leonardes on fields of scarlet flew over the cohort numbering some four hundred fighting men in addition to the Baron's footmen, knights, their squires, and other sworn swords. There were other banners, too, some less tasteful others flying in the face of the Imperium. Raiders, bandits, pirates -- under the right circumstance, everyone was a sellsword.

They marched to the Greenwood looking for greenskins with the Baron at the fore. His instructions were quite simple: break up the cohort into their bands and companies. Each leader rode with him, to receive orders from the Baron alone, so that word may reach their respective men. His own knights, particularly those guards he received as Consul and later Governor, were legionnaires of the Empress Own, elite fighters and commanders in their own right. They were given second command in case the fighting grew thick and Straylor became indisposed.

Their mission was simple: remain in staggered formation, with a wall of infantry marching in solid formation around the horsemen, archers, mages, and other soft targets. This expanded box formation would give them mobility in case they were attacked head-on. While unlikely, Straylor never could guess the workings of orcs and their kin. They were just as likely to throw themselves into a line of spears as they were to hunker down and breed -- like they did in the Sherian.

If they caught up to the other mercenaries, all the better. Straylor welcomed them to join their swelling ranks. They were stronger together rather than splitting into smaller, bite-sized chunks for the orcs and their allies. He was here to aid the legion, not deliver slaves and meat to their enemies.
