Quilantes Zil'aven

Quilantes Zil'aven
A Shade of Grey

Name:
Quilantes Zil'aven

Race:
Elf
Esh'laheir / Vysstichi

Age:
Seventy-Six Eras

Disposition:
Quiet, Calm, Polite

Fighting style:
Magically-boosted bōjutsu-style Quarterstaff combat

Height/Weight:
5'6" - 110 lbs

Arcana:

Thaumaturgy

Appearance:
Ivory-white skin with almost peroxide blonde hair. His eyes are crimson, but occasionally hidden behind grey contacts when the need for subtlety arises.
Informal wear is a loose pair of pants and a short-sleeved shirt with self-crafted black stone buttons made from black silk. A cloak of either black or mottled green is often worn to protect his skin from strong sunlight, as well as hiding useful items. A 7ft staff carved of Lightwood and capped with silver is usually borne in one hand, with runes embossed on the wood with gold leaf. Unless formally dressed, he wears either black silk slippers or goes barefoot when in a rush.
Formally, when he is within a city, he wears a neatly pressed black suit with a white handkerchief in a breast pocket, upon which has been embroidered a black QZ.

Synopsis:
Quill is the son of a Vysstichi mother and Esh'lanheir father, who fell in love and got married in secret from their families. The Vysstichi family found out about the father 'tainting' their bloodline, caught him and burned him alive. Quill's mother allowed her husband to sacrifice himself to give her and her young son time to flee, something which gave Quill deeply ingrained pyrophobia that he is only slowly learning to overcome. The two lived on the run for decades before finally reaching out to the father's family in Ethgan'tor. But instead of giving the Vysstichi mother and her half-Shadow son shelter, they captured her. Before she was taken away, she bade her child to flee the City of Light and seek sanctuary elsewhere. Quill does not know this, but his mother was executed the following brightening.
Quill fled the family, stealing enough gold for transport. Heading for nearby Frigid River, he was exposed to evil where others expected goodness, and kindness from the heart of the dark. Quill used to feel very little connection with the world around him, prior to the Xetan hammerfall of the Black Fog. Hated by Esh'laheir for being Vysstichi, hated by Vysstichi for being Esh'laheir and mistrusted by the rest of the world for his alien appearance and bloodline, Quill lived a life seperate from society, choosing to persue his passions for Dreamwalking, Thaumaturgy and Reading in private.

The events of the Summer of Empire's Nineteenth era post-Fractum would change Quill's life - and indeed, the Aelyrian Empire - forever. An umbral miasma of death and decay swept in from the lands to the West, covering the entirety of the provinces of Lauryl and Arakmat in a deadly 'Black Fog' that decimated the population and left most of the resulting survivors homeless and without anything to their names other than the clothes on their back and a few meagre possessions. As a child of Lauryl to the bone, Quill found himself as one of the several thousand survivors, packed into the refugee camps established on the southern shoreline of the Great Centripax Basin - which was the triprovincial border between Lauryl, Centripax and Enamoria.
After making a public request in the Aelyrian Herald for aid, he found himself appointed as Prefect: the Empire's official ruler and peacekeeper of the Refugee Camps and, by extention, the last of the Lauryllian people. This great weight placed on his shoulders would slowly destroy any last vestiges of innocence and childish naivety over the following months, as he was forced to watch the utter depths of despair and depravity as the Lauryllian people slowly died off from disease, lawlessness and suicide as the Empire turned its backs on them. Quill's apathy towards the Empire was only strengthened by this heartless condemnation of his people and, if it were not for the impending shadow of war with the Xet on the horizon, who knows what measures he may have sought to exact vengeance for the atrocities he saw in the Lauryllian Death Camp's final days.
Serving as the Camp's chief healer, as well as its Prefect, Quill developed a sense of responsibility and protectiveness for those around him, which has since hardened into a resolve to protect the innocent and weak from the dark forces of the world. He has tried to condemn most of his memories of the Death Camps to a dark abyss in his mind, but the black waters are known to occasionally rise up and threaten to drag him under. It is this very darkness that has pushed him into the role of Protector, fighting with tooth and nail to save every scrap of goodness left in a ravaged Empire.

Alter-Ego - Michaelian:
As a consequence of living on the road with only his mother for company, Quill was ever moving from city to city without a chance to settle down and make friends. Retreating into himself, the young boy chose to confide in an imaginary friend which he called Michaelian. The inspiration for Michaelian came when he and his mother visited a graveyard, walking through the tombstones and mausoleums on a quiet autumn afternoon. They stopped before a statue of the Ke'trala, the fabled winged elven progenitors of legend, and Quill imagined his father being safe in the stars, surrounded by these winged, angelic beings. That evening, the boy dreamed of the marble statue coming to life and talking with him, assuring him of his fathers well-being. From that brightening forth, Michaelian visited Quill often, the two of them talking, exploring and learning together. To the young Quill, Michaelian represented a pillar of safety and comfort, the father-figure in his life that he was deprived of by the Vysstichi.

As the decades rolled on, Quill slowly began to rely on his imaginary friend less and less, eventually dismissing him as a figment of his childish imagination. Then, at 76 eras of age, Quill's mother was abducted from him by the city guards of Ethgan'tor, forcing him to flee the city. That first night on the run, lost and alone in the Lauryllian Gracelands, Quill was visited by Michaelian for the first time in over a decade. The angelic figure spoke to him, saying that he had been watching over him all these eras and that now he was here to stay. From that brightening forth, Michaelian took on a life and a consciousness of his own, inhabiting the depths of Quill's consciousness. The two of them would not always see eye to eye, and Quill often found himself bickering with 'M' out loud, much to his embarrasment.

In times of stress, Quill found that he could relinquish control of his body to his alter-ego, allowing Michaelian to move, speak and act through him. A stoic, logical and pragmatic individual, Michaelian's failure to grasp the concepts of social behaviour led Quill into hot water on more than one occasion. As a Dreamwalker, Michaelian becomes his Dream Form, walking the shifting lands of the Dreamscape every darkening just as his counterpart walks the Material Plane in the light of the brightening.

Personality
The Iron Woobie.

”In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed."

William Ernest Henley, 'Invictus'

"Most WoobiesCharacters with whom the audience feels sympathy are the victim of external circumstance. That may be how it started out for this little guy, but after having to deal with too much guff, he's lost the ability to feel sorry for himself, and will continue standing in the path of inevitable misfortune. He will Rage Against the Heavens in anger for the ridiculous extent of his trials and tribulations, but when it comes right down to it, he's not expecting the big guy to start doing him any favors now.
Oftentimes the Iron Woobie is also a Determinator, though this isn't an essential part of the character. The chief difference is that a Determinator usually has a specific reason whereas Iron Woobie can be someone who just bears up gamely to things that happen to him for no particular reason that he can see. Be that as it may, he stubbornly insists on walking the same misfortune-laden path he was on before, and won't give up his personal ethical code just because things continue to go poorly for him."

Interaction:
It is Quill's dream to become a great Thaumaturge and Dreamwalker, traversing both the Material Plane and the Dreamscape, protecting the weak and healing the wounded. This is largely due to his sense of pride; he is determined to show the world that blood means nothing when resolve goes up against it. For this reason he is determined to prove that his mixed bloodline does not make him a monster, and that he can still do great deeds of Good.

Before the events at the gates of Arkdün, his isolation and trauma after his mother's abrupt departure from his life meant that Quill was a very shy, quiet and cowardly figure. Aside from the occasional flare of emotion that escaped through his mask, Quill was intent on barricading his mind away from the rest of the world. However, the trials of the undead city coaxed the small spark of confidence within him into a flame, which only grew as he was later drawn into the realms of Kelrondar to play his own small part in holding the barriers between our world and the next. It was here that he killed his first man - a wood elf corrupted by the taint of Trollism, to be specific - which was another milestone on his long path to maturity.

For the next few eras, Quill's confidence and ambition slowly grew, as he returned to Mystique to continue his studies in Thaumaturgy. Being bound for his over-abundant curiosity by his ill-tempered mentor, Quill's luck turned on the eve of the Eclipse of the Darkening. His old mentor found himself demoted and fled the academy, as the newly bound elf found himself taken under the wing of a new mentor. Quill's second unbinding went through without a hitch, and Quill promptly resumed his studies with ferocious single-mindedness. Soon after, he approached the Chancellor of the Bosquet in Mystique and proposed a student council with he at it's head. Despite the success of this proposal, Quill's world was shattered not long after by the cataclysmic events of the Xet invasion and the Fog of Darkness.

The events of the Exodus of Lauryl, followed by the long cycles of death and decay that surrounded Quill in the southern refugee camps changed Quill forevermore. The last remnants of his shy, innocent naivety were washed away upon a sea of blood and darkness, leaving behind a severe, cynical and emotionally shattered figure. Twisted by the overwhelming feelings of sorrow, despair and a thirst for revenge, Quill's attempts to hide it all behind a mask of stoicism were regularly thwarted by passionate outbursts as he struggled to come to terms with the world falling apart around him.
But today, he has managed to reach a state of firm purpose. Coping with the black memories of the Death Camps by sealing them away, he pursues his education in the arcane and mundane aspects of healing with single-minded purpose. Emotionally numbed, he savours the rare opportunity for frivolity and has learnt to seek the glimmers of light in life. Still, he has by no means forgotten the wrongs served to his people and his passions are directed at those who he blames for decimating his beloved province, and those who he has now dedicated his considerable energy and talent towards destroying:
The Xet Alliance.

Interests and Strengths:
Dreamwalking, Thaumaturgy and a seemingly bottomless well of knowledge are his three major skills. He is a devout follower of Kaimelea, She Who Opens The Eye, which is understandable, considering his passion for Dreamwalking. He politely respects the other gods and planetars of Aelyria, and will even pray to them on the odd occasion when the situation demands it, but it is Kaimelea who he feels truly connected to.
His crimson Vysstichi eyes allow him near-perfect night vision, and his elven physique gives him increased stamina when running, as well as agility and dexterity that surpass the average human.
Mentally, Quill is capable of taking a great deal of abuse - equally able to dish it out when the situation demands it. He is quite capable of projecting facades to protect an often seething pot of emotions and thoughts that bubble just below the surface.
He has been a staunch bibliophile ever since he learnt to read several decades ago. Wherever he and his mother travelled in Aelyria, Quill would quickly seek out the nearest repository of books and lose himself in another world. His love of books is similar in this way to his love of Dreamwalking; both provided an escape from the harsh realities of life. The consequences of this being that Quill has an accumulated knowledge that would shame many human scholars, and his appetite for learning is only barely tempered by his better judgement in the face of danger.

Dislikes and Weaknesses:
Quill is deeply mistrusting and wary towards Vysstichi, as they had committed atrocities upon his family that were directly attributed to their culture and beliefs. He takes insults to heart, even if he does not show it, and isn't above vindictive retribution against those who he percieves has wronged him - sometimes even to the point of injury or mental trauma. The one thing which is capable of penetrating his armor of detachment and aloofness is the female gender. As an adolescent elf, Quill finds extreme difficulty in socialising with girls his own age, and will betray a rather antiquated, gentlemanly side that otherwise does not reveal itself.
As an elf, Quill's physical weaknesses are rather typical. He has little strength compared to the average man, and finds that employing his Thaumaturgical skills are invaluable in augmenting his skills with a quarterstaff.
Although Quill has learnt how to shield himself mentally from societies abuse very well, there are a few chinks in his mental armour that allow others a glimpse to the angry, frightened child hidden within. Watching his father being burnt alive at a little over a decade old has given him a deeply ingrained pyrophobia - something he is only now slowly learning to overcome. He also takes extreme offence to being labelled a 'Vyssie', vehemently denying that the Dark Elf blood within him dictates his beliefs or moral views.

To get on well with Quilantes Zil'aven:
Patience and tolerance are essential. Do not bring up his heritage unless you wish to offend. Engage with him at an intellectual level and you will have won a staunch and loyal ally.

"He who fights monsters should see to it that he himself does not become a monster.
As when you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you"

Dreamweaving Techniques
Compositions within the Dreamscape

My right hand wields the spear that shatters illusions
My left hand wields the flame that illuminates the darkness
Aethereal scales, the harmony of eternal balance is ensured
While one is weakened, the other is strengthened...
First Composition; Flame of Phedos

Raging fires of the north are turned upon themselves
Armies massing in the south face impregnable walls
Roaring beasts of the east scatter in confusion
and thine falling blade rings hollow in the west...
Second Composition; Shield of Cetheron

Crystal flowers bloom over the frosted glass
A dying breath shimmers in the frozen air
A cold so deep that the skin blisters in blue flame
And all hope fades in a world of ice and fire
Third Composition; Xenarius Winter

Stand tall, engraved doorway of stone and darkness
Beyond lies the realm of salvation and despair
The yawning abyss call your name in welcome
Embrace the currents of destiny and pass beyond
Fourth Composition; Jalat's Gate

Flesh harder than diamond laughs at the blade
Roaring behemoths lay waste to the land
Fall prey to an enemy more timeless than yourself
And feed the hunger of the eternal deep
Fifth Composition; Jorel's Hunger

The world itself is but a dream, a figment of the mind
All that ever was and all that will be is shaped by my hand
Gods and man move at the behest of the dreamwalker
A power eternal and unyielding in magnitude
Release the shackles of mortality from the mind
And embrace the true power of the Dreamscape
Shun the inevitable descent of the blade
and enter a world where time itself bows down
Sixth Composition; Orod's Timepiece

The reaper sneers at a thousand vengeful swords
The trickster laughs at the dancing strings of the puppets
The sun god renders divine judgement from his throne
As the Fallen One lies waiting in the shadows
The Queen of Nightmares snarls within the Ruins
Her followers hunger for the darkness on which she feeds
Thwart their efforts, welcome them in a baptism of fire
Jorel knows nothing of the chaos I bring forth
Seventh Composition; Kaimelean Storm

Hiding in plain sight, thirsting for blood
Too late, the invisible blade has been sated
Tenth Composition; Hidden Strike

Death hovers within my palm
Fly true and shoot to kill

My outstretched palm summons the wave
A thousand strikes that seek the darkness

Nature reaches out, ensnare the prey

Impede the flow, air like treacle

Footsteps invite disaster, retribution of the land
A thousand fragile orbs, awaiting your timely end

Velrondae thwart the invasions of the Twisted
Suffer in torment as long as we survive

The Architect designs glittering spires
My hand denies the expression of the mind

Change averted, Beriadren laughs at your misfortune
