History
"Come live with me and be my love,
And we will all the pleasures prove,
That valleys, groves, hills, and fields,
Woods, or steepy mountain yields.
And we will sit upon the rocks,
Seeing the shepherds feed their flocks,
By shallow rivers, to whose falls
Melodious birds sing madrigals."
The farming life was hardly as romantic as the poets ascribed. For the common folk of the small agrarian village of Wylie's birth in Enamoria there was nothing sublime or idyllic about it at all. It was calloused hands, sweaty brows, aching bodies and blistering feet. For most it was a life heavy in labor working the dirt in hope of producing something to eat after the onset of winter.
For Wylie it was grudgingly waking two candlemarks ahead of the suns to do chores every brightening before schola and then another two candlemarks of chores after. It was missing a cycle of schola altogether once or twice an era for two cycles during the harvest and planting time, and seeing the big city twice an era if he was lucky. It was mucking the barns, collecting the eggs, feeding the horses, and tearing out weeds. It was an exhaustive and repetitive life only broken by the occasional social event. Or like the tumultuous occasion when his older brother up and left the farm to seek his way when Wylie was thirteen ordinations after having a heated argument with his father.
Wylie was the youngest of four siblings, two older brothers and two older sisters. His father was a common human hailing from a long line of grain farmers. They had owned land a brightening outside of Medonia for three or four generations and worked it as best their resources allowed. His mother was the daughter of vagaran farmers that had tilled the land of Enamoria similarly for eras as well any plebeians could. While Wylie grew up on the farm of his father's father's father, his young mind dreaded the prospect more of spending the rest of his life there with each passing month.
Once he finished schola he knew what he wanted to do, or better put, he knew exactly what he didn't want to do. What he lacked was a silver to his name to allow him to get out of the trap he was cemented in and desperate to leave. He considered many strange and unlikely schemes, but ended up resigning himself to the fact he was stuck where he was. But a few months later his lucked turned with the sudden appearance of his brother sporting some new found wealth, and ready to share it to help his kid brother escape the life he had and didn't intend to return to himself. |
