Personality:
Aegis is proud to be a minotaur, but he does not look down on other races for being different, instead he is curious and wants to know more about how these people live and communicate. He is not quick to show anger, but if pushed he will fight back, and from being a gladiator most of his life, he will use any method necessary to dismantle his opponent. Aegis is very naïve in his experiences and this is because he was raised as a slave all his life without being shown how various situations are dealt with in the real world.
Biography:
Aegis was born to a slave caste family in Labyrinth on the island of Minatos. He was borne with no name to call his own so his aristocrat master simply called him “Boy”. The aristocrat also owned his mother, Darinos and older half-brother, Celtar. Darinos would call her son “Love” in the minotaurian language, which made Aegis feel happy having an identity. It has been rumored that Aegis’ real father was an elite guard to the royal family of Labyrinth, from what his mother had told him. She instructed Aegis to never tell anyone about whom his father really was, but to just convince everyone his father was only a slave who came and went through the household owned by the aristocrat. If Aegis would have been caught speaking about a caste mix, he and his mother would have possibly been put to death. The young minotaur witnessed all to often the horrors of his brethren being put to death for caste mixing among other blasphemies, because one of his tasks was to sop up the blood of the beheaded into a bucket then walk all the way to the ocean to dump it in.
Most of his other work was hard labor which involved heavy lifting of logs and stones. He and his brother also had to pull a plow for various farms around his area before seeding began. This hard work rewarded the young minotaur with a strong physique and great endurance, but this reward was also his curse, for it sprouted the attention of the local aristocrats and nobles who would see his strong physique and beg his owner to place him in the battle arena for their own profit. Aegis’ master wasted no time getting in on the action and admitting Aegis in the fights against other slaves and sometimes wild beasts that were captured. He fought well for his inexperience and caught on quick to survive… anything necessary for the win. Most fights were bare hand, in which Aegis learned to use his horns for butting and piercing charging foes. On special occasions, he was handed a rusty axe which he learned to use at a very amateur skill level. As Aegis got more noticed in the arena his master had Aegis’ arms tattooed with a maze as a gimmick to get the crowd hyped up to bet on him and to also intimidate his foe. He didn’t mind the tattoos because he figured it kept to his roots of being a minotaur. He also found it to be a statement that even though he was a slave and a “mindless barbarian” tool for the nobles to use, deep down he was a true minotaur higher than the royal family themselves. Of course, he never spoke of this to anyone but his mother, who agreed whole heartedly.
As the years past and Aegis became a healthy adult, his mother became very sick and died working slave labor till her last breath. No burial was to be performed by his master, so the mournful son took it upon himself to carry her out to the ocean and bury her in the sand near the area where he would dump the buckets of blood. Celtar had been sold to another aristocrat on the other end of Labyrinth so he did not know of his mother’s death, as Aegis never seen him again.
Everytime the young adult would take buckets of blood out to the sea, he would stop at his mothers burial and talk to her, telling her about how he would leave his people he had grown to despise. It wasn’t the minotaur race he disliked, it was the way things had come in their society. Aegis thought things needed to change, and it boggled him how his own people could treat each other, who saw themselves as great beings, so badly.
One day as Aegis was hauling logs across town, he detoured away from the city and went out to where his mother was buried for a final goodbye. He had no food, no money and no idea where he would end up, but anything was better than waiting to die a slaven gladiator on Minatos. The large beast tossed the log in the water and jumped in after it fighting the waves that slammed onto the shore. He held his breath and gripped his arms around the floating log, kicking with his feet.
As the island got smaller a smile grew across Aegis’ face. He knew that if he would die out in this ocean, he would at least die a free person. No aristocrat could take that away from him. The only thought that stopped his joy from being at full potential was knowing his mother was still on that island… and island that had no care for a slave like her. There was nothing he could do about that now. The only thing he kept from the island was his memory of his mother and the scars he obtained from battle.
As the dark approached the calm waters he drifted in, with no land in site, the beast grew hungry and tired. He worried that if he let go he would sink to the bottom of the ocean, so he held on as tight as he could often dunking his head under the water to awaken himself as he dozed off. A chime could be heard not far from him along with some voices. The language was unfamiliar to him at the time, but it turned out it was a ship with human fishermen who spoke common. Lights from the ship began to get closer as it neared Aegis who waved a free arm in the air and grunted in his native language.
Crew members of the ship yelled out to him and dropped life boats into the water to retrieve him. The humans were Kemites out on a fishing expedition. They took the outcast on board and gave him food and water, then allowed him to sleep. Aegis was lucky to have been saved by these nice creatures, although he had never seen any other race besides his own, it made communication very difficult, but as a token of his gratitude, the minotaur helped out with various chores on the ship and would assist in pulling the large nets of fish onto the ship for the men. He was well received by all the men on board and was given plenty of food and water.
One human in particular took a liking to the beast. He was the captain of the vessel and his name was Clyde Ironhammer. On many occasions he would try to communicate with the minotaur in common language, but the humanoid would just stare at him and grunt something. So everyday for about a cycle, Clyde repeated the same thing “I am Clyde, who are you? Clyde….you?” He would point to himself then to Aegis. After a cycle of that repeating, Aegis got to know the name of the person who was communicating with him, so in his best common while pointing at Clyde he said. “C-clyde…” Aegis then pointed to himself and said “Yoouu…”. The Kemite was impressed with his effort but gave a hearty laugh and told Aegis that his name was not “you”. Clyde then looked at the minotaur’s arms and came up with a name for him. “Aegis Labyrinthine”, he said while pointing at the beast. “Clyde… Aegis Labyrinthine…”
A chill ran up the minotaur’s spine. He now had a name, an identity to be known by. He looked at the human and pointed to himself and spoke. “Ayy…giss…Laaabrinnntheye…nn”. A smile glistened from behind the silver hoop that hung to the beasts upper lip.
For the next few cycles, Clyde spent half of a brightening, every brightening teaching the minotaur basic common so he could communicate on board with the people. Aegis was a fast learner of the language and would speak with every crew member at any chance he had just to practice his new found happiness. This kindness bestowed upon him from these human gave the minotaur a keen interest in the idea of learning more about different races. So far he had only seen minotaur and kemite humans, but what other creatures walked on the same world as him?
As the ship sailed in the Great Sea, they neared Aelyria Prime’s docks for resupply. The bull beast requested that he go out on the land and discover all the things it had to offer him. Clyde was happy to oblige, so he gave Aegis 500 crowns, had an Imperial visa made for him and gave him a cheap dagger to get him started. Thus, the history of Aegis’ experience learning and growing as a new minotaur is about to unfold even further now that the Aelyrian empire is his to explore.
