Alexis Sapientia
He is just what a young man ought to be, sensible, good-humoured, lively; and I never saw such happy manners!-so much ease, with such perfect good breeding! He is also handsome, which a young man ought likewise to be, if he possibly can. His character is thereby complete.
--Elizabeth and Jane Bennet, Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen.

Pseudonyms
Alexis Sapieha
Lászlo Andrássy
Laurentius
Andrew Harald MacAlois
Race: Human (Pure Vagaran on father’s side, Baijani-Medonian on mother’s side)
Age: 17 Patterns (24 Junctior as pattern birth-brightening)
Personality: Born heir to a minor aristocratic house, he has known luxury and comfort all his life. The tone of command to instruct servants is but second nature, and the relaxed, smooth, and lilting diction so enamored of the ruling class comes easy to him. He is very observant of one’s bearing, and can be a handful to deal with at times. His consecration as concurrent Metropolitan of his fief has knocked some compassion and humility into him, but periodic internal clashes between the authority he bears by his ring of office, responsibility borne from his consecration, being a scion of an aristocratic House, and his own personal wants, tend to erupt from time to time and give him no peace of mind. He is well-read, that is to say, knows a little about a lot. His weakness (aside from girls who just stare admiringly at him for more than the normal time—which can literally paralyze Alexis) is that once he’s opened his mouth, it’s difficult for him to stop.
A handsome and polite young man in the prime of his youth with a spring in his step and overflowing confidence easily directed towards anything he puts his mind to, Alexis is the poster boy for the new and enlightened aristocracy. He can be imperious and childlike at times, overly curious to the point of imposing; sweet, charming, fun-loving, and energetic as a teenager flush with the joy of life, and as carefree, moody, shy, food-voracious, fastidiously self-conscious about his appearance, and magnetically attracted to the female form just like every other boy…err, young man his age.
Appearance: Straight but flowing hair, impeccably combed, though always flying in all directions thanks to the wind, or because girls always like ruffling it to tease him. Sparkling blue eyes of an almost-innocent that can turn piercing and give one a fright once he’s turned imperious. Blemishless face with irresistably pinchable cheeks and handsome patrician features. Curious and expressive eyes. Pearly-white teeth. Smooth porcelain skin of an aristocrat, always clean. Nails well-manicured. Impeccable coat with tails, tunic, cravat, cape with chain and clasps, trousers, black boots from the knee downwards. Currently looks like the regular Jebediah Aelyrian, nothing special clothing-wise, though just a little neater then Jebediah Aelyrian. Simple ring with the words Hospodar * Krytzillikinarnessus * Alexis * Sapientia engraved therein, worn at right ring finger. A crafted metal pectoral emblem worn on a string around his neck with an ancient Aelyrian symbol that appears to be a fish. Somewhat tall for his age, and with the lithe body that all growing boys tend to have, thanks to a metabolism on overdrive.

Animals
Rogue. A chestnut mare windstepper purchased from the smelly establishment of a particularly capricious nutcase in Medonia, this magnificent piece of horseflesh carries herself quite proudly.
Her head, expression, her eyes, all the more so as to betray a hint of intelligence. A gleaming brown coat and a well-kept mane aren’t the only things that make this creature stand out; her muscular body, springy gait, and tempestuous disposition make her seem all the more petulant as her namesake—Nikki Sea L’Evienne, also known as The Rogue.
Quicksilver. A silver-grey mare, truly an excellent piece of horseflesh. Well muscled and sleek, her coat is a soft dapple grey with deeper silver in it. Her long mane and tail are deeper silver-grey fading into a gentle sea-foam white. Her head is set atop a proudly arched neck with dark brown, intelligent eyes, dainty pointed ears pricking delicately forwards.
Highly intelligent, the animal had been a gift from a visiting nobleman to the Lady Aurelia Arkdün, who, in turn, was gracious enough to lend the use of the same 'for as long as [Alexis would] have need of her', with the reasoning that 'the exercise will be of great benefit as...her spirit longs for the freedom of the road'. As sufficient payment, Master Sapientia is commanded to pay the Lady Protector of Archadoon a visit at the Manor House, 'when his path finds himself back here.'

The Sapientias of House Osteyricjh, Habichtsbergen, Carmelyn.
Hjalmar Dag Agne, known as the Göethaies.
Recognized as the Founder of the House, family lore claims he was the original fellow who swore the feudal bloodpledge or received a charter. He settled somewhere in the border of Carmelyn and Arium, south of the Eunesias, giving rise to the Osteyricjh estate, future fief of the Sapientias. He had three legitimate heirs, as far as can be ascertained. Lucky for him, they were all sons. It is unknown whether he had brothers or sisters.
1. Haakon Guntram Edilbert Vediviche Gustaf, known as the Just. Father of Leopold and Maximillian. Known to be a jolly fellow who ruled wisely when Hjalmar passed, very little is known of this enigmatic individual. His legacy lies with the voluminous edicts and decisions promulgated during his reign, most of which still constitute the bedrock of Osteyricjh manorial law, custom, and practice. He died a little after Alexis was born. Buried in the family mausoleum, beside his loving wife, Amelie.
2. Sorensřn Charles Kristiaan Ravn. The more adventurous of the three, sturdy Kristiaan took to the sea for a time, signing up for the obligatory tot of rum, and later on, as a merchant-privateer. Rumors have it that he was the “Raven of the Seas,” a notorious pirate celebrated for his navigational skills. He later interested himself in the sport of shark-fishing. He perished with his brother Olaf while undertaking the same endeavor during the reign of Emperor Valerian Constantius. Though he never married, and left no legitimate heirs, he was a sailor, and a man with regular urges, so…
3. Olaf Peter Kierkegaard Alaric Seranon, known as Devisthenes. Known more as a scholar and a thinker, Olaf busied himself with books and philosophies. He tended to referee disputes between Haakon and Kristiaan, and fancied himself an explorer as well. He was working on a complete geography of the Osteyricjh region in relation to the Eunesias while sailing with his brother Kristiaan. A detailed graphical dissection of the Eunesian species of shark, written and illustrated entirely in his hand hangs in Habichtsbergen Palace. He perished before he could enter into formal vows with a librarian in Olympia, though at a time, was contemplating the priesthood. That doesn’t necessarily mean his chapter ends there.
4. Calliope Anna (Kali’anna) Oakwood Gotha Hindenbroff. Creative female in her own right, designed the first undergarment of Snooty’s Secret. It was called Dazzle them Girdle in Fairy Pink. Was slightly shunned at first by the family for indulging in such pedestrian matters as shopkeeping, and with such distasteful commodities, at that. Eventually lived her own life, settled somewhere in Silrosia or Enamoria, last anyone heard. Issue of Kali'anna can be further perused here.
Issue of Haakon
1A. Haakon Ernst Augustus Leopold Alois Vediviche Zechariah Dag Hjalmar. Son of Haakon, grandson of Hjalmar, Leopold took skill with the sword and bow before he was fifteen, bagging his first boar at the age of twelve-and-a-half. Known more as an accomplished hunter, during his reign, the Osteyricjh region became known for the Weserdammerung Vale Hunt, the premium social and sporting event of its day. He was a loyal husband to his wife, Caroline. At least that’s what he says.
Caroline Maria Wilhelmina Sapientia neé Andrássy, Chatelaine of Osteyricjh. Originally from the southern parts of Aelyria, Caroline married Leopold, and later became known as the most gracious hostess this side of Eunesia. Polite and well-refined, Chatelaine Caroline was a perfect match for Leopold, and ably balanced the hunter’s rough edges with her impeccable sense of style, as well as her special feminine touch. It was her idea to grandly celebrate Primeheims Eve, and it is suggested that she brought Patriarch Methodius and his orthodox version of the Faith to Eunesia. She is likewise known to be a patron of literature, culture, and the arts.
1Aa. Alexis, Hospodar and Metropolitan of Krytzillikinarnessus and Heir to House Sapientia.
1Ab. Lady Caroline Alexandra Amelie of Habichtsbergen, the Chatelaine-Roseate. Daughter of Haakon and Caroline, younger sister of Alexis, Alexandra is the apple in her family’s eye, probably because she nearly died in childbirth. Strangely enough, there is no sibling rivalry between her and Alexis, and her elder brother absolutely fawns and dotes upon her. Ioannes help whomever she marries, because not only was she Haakon’s girl, she ably mastered the art of the genteel put-down and feminine guile from her mother, and is said to have inherited the skill in the bow and fast wit of her father. She was sent away for schooling somewhere, around a pattern or two ago.
2A. Hector Maximillian Friedrich Albertus, Steward of Osteyricjh, Margrave of Nijlgednyjek. Son of Haakon, younger brother to Leopold, Maximillian stands to inherit much upon the end of the senior line. It is said he was so enraged by the fact that he was born second to Leopold that everytime it was time for him to feed, he would always spit out sour milk. While civil, it is no secret that Maximillian covets total power and control over the House, and it is said that he nearly succeeded in causing Alexis’ death after a freak horse-riding accident, but it was never proven. He has thick ties with members of the Jorelite cults, thanks to hefty donations to poor but deserving servants of the wrong religious persuasion, using House money.
Eliza neé diTomasso, Chatelaine of Nijlgednyjek. A greedy gold-digger, daughter of a merchant that went bankrupt, Eliza’s ambition is to see her husband rich and powerful, and to likewise hold the purse-strings and the proxy reins. Her strong, forceful personality is muted only by her hideous face, one that only a mother could love. She uses her gender to control Maximillian and manipulate her son Rainier, and if only she were not so inept as to be hopelessly bound, one could swear she was a witch of Haya herself. Certainly she appears to be one to Maximillian, because thanks to her eternal vigilance, the Margrave has remained faithful to her all this time. To his perennial dismay.
2Aa. Johann Sebastian Maximillian Friedrich Rainier, Hospodar of Fhigjiopfusrauge. Son of Maximillian, grandson of Haakon, nephew to Leopold, and first cousin to Alexis and Alexandra, Rainier is the veritable family brat. Perhaps it was a trait acquired from his father, the sulky and brooding Margrave. He took his first life at fourteen, fathered an illegitimate child at the age of fifteen, and later had the mother, a scullery maid, sentenced to death in manorial court for adultery. He has a continuing interest in necromancy. As Hospodar of Fhigjiopfusrauge, his reign has been marked by his abject cruelty, and all female serfs are subject to his whims, and forcible invitations to his bed should he so see fit. Thanks to his father’s influence and Rakryan allies, he is untouchable so long as he stays within the House lands. He always carries a whip at his side, and is obscenity personified.
2Ab. Lady Eliza Marina of Nijlgednyjek. Perhaps the sole redeeming factor of the Nijlgednyjek branch of the Sapientias, Marina, thanks to her gender, was brought up solely by a housekeeper, which could explain why she escaped the black taint of her family. Despite her lineage, she is very humble and obedient, traits which she may have picked up from the kindly housekeeper, and which certainly cause her no limit of scorn from her brother and parents. She can be found most of the time in the kitchen, learning how to cook, or in the servant’s quarters, knitting or sewing. She has a doll and imaginary friend named Clara, an emotional security blanket, so it would seem.
The Andrássys of House Magdalen of Szechényi, Daltina, Enamoria.
Ladislav Andrássy, Voivode of Perczél.
Beatrix.
1. Isabella, known as Ilse. Married off.
The twins:
2Kaspar, Voivode of Perczél. Married to someone.
2a. Miklos, Grand Steward of Szechényi. 2b. Karolyi, and 2c. Bianca Eugenie.
3.Kasimir. Joined the Clergy.
4. Caroline Maria Wilhelmina Andrássy-Sapientia.
Curious matters abound in Daltina; on arriving, Alexis had been wandering the city, only to slip and fall, being picked up by a horse-rider, and forcibly taken to an undisclosed location. There, he is nearly-seduced by the grisly-looking Lady Dancour, a faded aristocrat who beds men for the titles and fortunes, and leaves them to die. The young noble is rescued from this fate by a ratlike child, a bastard of the Lady Dancour, who soon attempts to kill Alexis. Thankfully, young Sapientia is saved by a female thief, who gives him food and shelter in the interim...not to mention other things later on...such as presentation to an unknown relative.
Alexis was able to meet with his estranged cousin Bianca Eugenie Andrassy in Daltina; she who was daughter of Kaspar, Alexis' uncle, brother to his mother, Caroline. In the course of that meeting, he found out that the girl who had rescued him from a terrible fate was none other than Kael, a cousin-in-law, cousin to Bianca's husband Mahron. Alexis got the impression that seventeen pattern-old Bianca wasn't terribly happy with her marriage...and later on, he discovered that she married too young, perhaps.
Uncle Kaspar died three summers ago, and Bianca's mother lives somewhere in the Principality of Prime. Apparently, she, as well as her sons, do not approve of her marriage to Mahron, who is described as an 'organizer of several government buildings', and an orphan adopted by a wealthy merchant in Prime. Apparently, wealth (and political protection, thanks to Kael) was all he brought into the relationship, what with the House seemingly in decline.
Her younger brothers, Miklos and Karolyi, do not seem to approve. They keep in close contact via the occasional letter, but on the whole, seem surprisingly aloof, and with good reason.
There is a side story to this. Kael, the female human thief who'd saved Alexis, hadn't been telling him the whole truth. Kael's father had near-fallen to the same fate of the other suitors of the Lady Dancour, and saved, to his chagrin, by his very same daughter. He was dead now...but the curious fact was that the Lady Dancour was the very same aunt of her fathers. Say what one may about the gentility about nobles; it seems there are twisted secrets to these unspoken tales, as well. The ratlike child who'd rescued--and near-killed Alexis, was Kael's (half?) brother. Ungrateful man that he was, Kael's father threw her out into the streets, forcing her to become the thief that she was.
Tensions exist between Mahron and Kael. Whether this is due to their mutual professions or some other familial rivalry, one has to wait for the next chapter.
Kin and other relations
Caroline Alexandra Amelie Sapientia, Chatelaine-Roseate of Osteyricjh, younger sister. Deceased.
Saraid Seppanen Dkany-Sapientia, paternal second cousin, granddaughter of Nerys and grand-uncle Kristiaan.
Bianca Eugenie Andrassy, maternal first cousin, daughter of Kaspar, brother to Alexis’ mother.
Mahron, cousin-in-law, husband to Bianca.
Kael, second cousin-in-law, cousin to Mahron, husband of Bianca. Long dark hair framed a pale face, which held two piercing green eyes, hazel rings about the pupils. Her face was far from unpleasant.
Rhiannon and Tristram Rhodes, second cousins, grandchildren to Haakon. Regal bearing with a sublime beauty, and the other, a spirited young man with a sharp intellect, a lover of prose and admirer of beautiful girls.

This journal is a discreet and sacrosanct keeper of his personal memories and contains a self-sketched portrait of his mother, and other private. | Purchased in Aelyria Prime after Muse left her temporary home settled on the edge of Candaceburg | Thumbnail not available |
| Object name | Description object | Where object was acquired | Picture | | Aging and brittle thick cream parchments | Folded twice horizontally and twice vertically at the edges, and with an enormous red-wax seal that previously secured same. Inside is some spidery script in black ink, apparently written by a strong and learned hand, and verified with a large beribboned red wax seal with the image of the letter L surmounted by a double-headed eagle and a coronet. | Purchased in Aelyria Prime after Muse left her temporary home settled on the edge of Candaceburg | Thumbnail not available |

| Object name | Description object | Where object was acquired | Picture | | Red and black outfit | Includes red torso garment that, like its separate sleeves, extends in long flowy trails that are excited easily by wind and movement. It generally reaches just above her ankles, and is belted at the waist by a black sash. This accompanies the color of the shorts that can be seen along either side through the openings in the outer garment. Her shoes are red and made for comfort with extended use in both performance and her form of combat, and are folded over at the ankles. Despite its nature the clothing is not intricately designed, and is therefore of a common quality that is worth little if sold back. (Note: Does not fully match the top CIR picture of Muse). | Tailored for Muse in one of the cities she passed through during her travels | Thumbnail not available | | Common clothing | One set of plain clothing of brown and manilla colors, including a thick winter cloak, leggings, wool-lined boots and a long-sleeved tunic. | Taken with her after she left her temporary home in Candaceburg. | Thumbnail not available |

Prehistory
As approved by GD Kalinda and modified by GD Pim. (GMs see here).
Life in those brightenings was good, and Leopold, son of Haakon, had made sure that everything was done in the grand style as in the olden brightenings, where servants knew their place, children were quietly tended to, and where the garden parties or grandiose darkening pracendas held at Habichtsbergen Palace soon became the stuff of parlour-hall and drawing-room legend. House Sapientia was a respected member of the social order in the north, a pillar of society, as it were, though more discreet and not as publicly known as other Houses of its stature.
In those brightenings, standard amusements included the Weserdammerung Vale Hunt, a joyous month-long deed hosted in Habichtsbergen where visiting nobility and other skilled horsemen took part in chasing game through the fields and the forests, and one that involved nearly all the freeholder tenants, either as participants or spectators. Most came for the feasting on the palace grounds that would later follow. Another favored activity, perhaps the most famous one, was the Primehiems Eve Banquet, where everyone gathered together for a grand darkening of goodwill in celebration for the blessings received during the previous era, and exchanged presents, to the delight of all, particularly the children.
Paradise at the lands of the Sapientias in the Osteyricjh estate was shadowed by dark clouds, however, in the same way stormy weather seemed to be building over Aelyria Prime and the rest of the Empire.
Maximillian, brother to Leopold, had long been brooding about the twist of fate that had denied him control over the House, and granted the younger Sapientia only scrapings from the rich Osteyricjh lands, such as the Margravate of Nijlgednyjek, and Fhigjiopfusrauge, granted to Maximillian’s son, Rainier, over which he reigned as Hospodar since his fifteenth-pattern birth-brightening. Certainly the poverty-ridden Fhigjiopfusrauge sub-estate was a far cry from bustling Krytzillikinarnessus, which Alexis held, and the manor at Nijlgednyjek was a pigsty compared to Habichtsbergen Palace, but since their uncles Olaf and Kristiaan still held some sway in the House Størthing, there was nothing Maximillian could do about it. It therefore seemed to be fortituous when Olaf and Kristiaan, close brothers even when the late Haakon was alive, perished while sailing in a force-ten gale. Drowned. Not even bestowal by his brother Leopold of the office of Steward of Osteyricjh, which controlled all revenue from House lands, could mollify his greed. He began plotting, aided by his son, and soon he had managed to swing the tide in his favor, alongside the coming into power of Julos in the Imperial Capital. Rainier, on the other hand, seemed to have possessed a natural talent for necromancy, to the delight of Maximillian’s new spellcaster friends in the Rakrya.
Leopold, sensing the way the winds blew, had secretly dispatched Alexis to Taralon far away to the southeast a little after the boy’s sixteenth birth-brightening, ostensibly to discipline the lad after being found kissing a young female, daughter of a tenant, in his apartments at the Palace. The closely-kept scandal was a convenient excuse to claim disfavor, and so the boy was dismissed from the precincts of Habichtsbergen, and his younger sister, Alexandra, was sent to school in a faraway province under an assumed name. In the meantime, all of Osteyricjh had fallen into Maximillian’s control and influence, thanks to the power of crowns, patronage, threats, or loose women. The only thing Maximillian had never been able to control was the local Church, and its Patriarch, Methodius. Methodius intended to preach a long and powerful Lesson on Primehiems Brightening, when everyone would be in a contemplative mood. It was said that at that same time, Methodius was to excommunicate the Margrave of Nijlgednyjek, and Hospodar of Fhigjiopfusrauge for spreading the Pox, falling far from the Faith and into the nefarious hands of Jorel-worshippers, and in so doing, remove them from any other lawful power, and deny them work from their churchgoing tenants.
Maximillian struck at the early candlemarks of Primehiems Brightening, the same time he knew when everyone would have been weary from subdued cheer the darkening before, thanks to the recent spread of the Pox. By sunsrise it was all over, and Maximillian waltzed into the Great Hall of Habichtsbergen, where held a feudal Manorial Court, and found Methodius guilty of apostasy, Leopold guilty of adultery, his wife Caroline guilty of witchcraft, and sentenced the rest of their loyal retainers to death for conspiracy and complicity in the same. All were locked in the Tower, but not before alleging, with the aid of manufactured evidence and the help of their servants, that Alexis and Alexandra had contracted the Pox long before, and would die anyway in great suffering. Eliza, Maximillian’s wife, prevailed upon her son and husband for a hint of detestable and misplaced mercy, and within a few cycles unwittingly watched two young corpses, that of previous victims (but not to Maximillian’s knowledge) devoured by flame.
The conquest of the Nijlgednyjek-Fhigjiopfusrauge branch over House Sapientia was complete.
Or so they thought.
Addendum
As approved by GD Apophis.
Now there came an interesting addition to this little tale, one that Master Alexis hadn’t been privy to. Alexis’ mummy, Caroline, a charming female, had in fact been the fourth child of a certain Ladislav Andrássy, head of the human House known as the Magdalen (pronounced ‘Maudlin’) in Daltina, whose four other children by his wife Beatrix were his sole treasures. The male twins, Kaspar and Kasimir, lorded it over the rest, except over Isabella or Ilse, the eldest daughter at the center of their fief, known as Bethen.
Bethen was the social, economic, and cultural center of the orszag, or fiefdom controlled by the Andrássy family, and House Magdalen performed its part of the Feudocratic Compact, maintaining sacred the bloodpledge it had fulfilled to the House of Maeve, which possessed carta imperia governing the area surrounding Daltina. While Ladislav had a suitable noble rank , he preferred to call himself the Voivode of Perczél, with the heir apparent retaining the style of Grand Steward of Szechényi, place-names, really, which previous Andrássys had bestowed in their Charismean dialect.
Ilse was later married off to a scion of another princely house, and Kaspar found himself a suitable wife, siring three children, Míklos, Karolyi, and Bianca Eugenie. Kasimir entered the clergy and was at peace with himself and with the Sacred Three. Caroline, as we know, married into the Sapientias of the North, within the Eunesias.
As far as one can tell, Ladislav’s grandchildren are still there, probably in their early adulthood by now. As to their state, with all the troubles taking place throughout Enamoria, it is impossible to tell without a firsthand glance whether they still live in the same stately manner as Caroline Sapientia nee Andrássy did when she was a child. Who knows? Perhaps some of Ladislav’s children survived battle, tenant insurrections, or the not-so-feeble Pox as well.
Grave Secrets (Not anymore!)
One thing though: Alexis doesn’t know that his despised uncle Maximillian has made things so (his tawdry apartment dwelling, send-off to Taralon and so forth) in order to depose his father, Leopold, from control of the House, effectively depriving Alexis of just about everything he holds dear, including his grand title of office (he’s also been defrocked as Metropolitan, and his cousin Rainier, Maximillian’s son, now controls all), inheritance, lands, and monies accruing to him by right, not to mention his father and mother, and separation from the sister he adores so much. If anyone ever told him that (and how would they know, anyway?), it would break his young idealistic heart and crush his gentle spirit so badly that he may never truly recover. At the moment, he thinks he’s been seconded as a page to the local lord—a normal procedure for noble families—to learn more about the art of ruling, when in fact he’s been sent there to get him out of his uncle’s way. Permanently, if Maximillian’s luck holds.

Alexis seen through other eyes
He seemed decent enough, she thought to herself. At least he had given some positive feedback of some kind. The rest? Robyn gave a mental shrug. Bunch of bloody idiots, she considered. Lets just jump in there and hope it works out. Lah lah lah....
Robyn, Pidgeon.
Such a boy, you are, you find yourself in Jaedaxia, and never have you seen so many beautiful women all around you at once. You cant decide on just one to look at, so you try to look at them all. Be careful you do not upset one by eyeing another that catches your fancy.
Mmelle Sincera Veluve, Plus ca change
But by the gods, the boy could talk.
--Milo DuGalle LEvienne, A Courtesy Call at the Governors Palace, Taralon, The Sherian.
He was young compared to the elf that had occupied her thoughts for so long. But not so unappealing in contrast, after all.
--Nikki LEvienne, Introductory Wine, Women, and Song, Taralon, The Sherian.
Good luck to him though, if he thought hed find a submissive wife within the realm of politics, perhaps any realm. On paper, sure. But happy wife, happy life, Milo maintained and it rarely had much to do with a husbands authority.
--Milo DuGalle LEvienne, A Study in Scarlet, Taralon, The Sherian.
Alexis seemed the kind to carry [ideas] out with a youthful energy Tito had almost forgotten since his early military days.
Motito Gildae, Student Commons, Arconis, Enamoria.
It was neither the majesty of his gallant form or the promise of a new lover that is so often the force that drives a lady to subdue a man like a mad conquistador, but the compassion of a virtuous being that brought the young maiden so nigh in distance to the young Sapientia.
Alexandra Woulofen, Angels in Aelyria, Diana, Sodality of Carmelyn.
Even from the distance (that Jaa could easily cover in seconds) that stood between them, Jaa saw blue eyes, hair that could easily spark the envy of the bald, and blemishless cheeks. How her fingers wished to pinch those cheeks...Oh dear, he looked like a shorter and tinier version of Jeimbus
and this one here was a hopeless romantic.
--Jaali Desseren as 'Jaixin Fireinyerpants', "Matchmaker, Matchmaker", Arconis, Enamoria
Alexis Sapientia, child of seeming clumsiness and strange manners, introduced himself and continued on to offer one of the most unique compliments the Lady had ever heard. A vision, indeed...to call him a boy would be not only inappropriate, but most probably incorrect. Alexis seemed both charming and pleasant to behold, both characteristics which would not keep him a boy for very long at all
he was a tall drink of water for his age
He was honest, at the very least, and not a pompous, self-important brat like most noble-born boys were wont to be.
Mekare, The Lady Taryn, Days go by
, Arconis, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
With straight flowing hair that looked as though he had been dragged through a hedge backwards, blue eyed, handsome in a fatuous weak jawed aristocratic manner and dressed in what looked remarkably like a school uniform. The creature smelt of tobacco and stale alcohol and it was fairly obvious that this nasty little boy was leading a life of dissolution at such a tender age.
Palacrisis D Jones, Away from the Road and Over the Mountain, Arconis, Enamoria.
Aazill was quite surprised to have been greeted by anyone, let alone a human who, even by elf standards, was fairly attractive...The fact that he admitted his own uselessness somewhat surprised her, for she had the impression he was more one to boast of what he could do than admit to what he couldn't.
Aazill Moonsong, Walking the Streets, Daltina, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
Mr. Potts raised his bushy eyebrows as high as they would go and stared at the student as if he was daft. Which he was. Had the boy no common sense at all?.... Heavens, what were they teaching youngsters these days! And this was to be the new generation that would lead the Empire - such as it was - to new glory! Ioannes help the Empire when these kids got through with it.
Aedile Englebert Potts, Arconis, Enamoria.
Next in the room was Alexis Sapientia. Rae had thought he'd seen the young man eyeing him earlier, but though nothing of it. It seemed to the giant that those glances had been more astonished curiosity than anything else, and that afterthought caused a soft chuckle. The young man, younger it seemed even than Rae who was only just nearing 20 patterns old. Regardless, the human boy had a frame typical of the human teenagers, and seemed quite well kempt. His hair was impeccably combed, and his skin was milky white as if never having had seen the sun.
Raegik of Angurvad, Arrival of the Spotted Pidgeon, Arconis, Enamoria.
Serra-Kane almost had to twitch his lips in response to the boy's brisk, impecably polished manner. A student at The Reg - somehow unsurprising. Remembering his own youthful days the Duke wondered what young scad had set up this Alexis Sapientia for the dare. Midshipman Alexis Sapientia, who of all the company only had given Serra-Kane his proper title.
The Duke Serra-Kane, Arrival of the Spotted Pidgeon, Arconis, Enamoria.
Serion wanted as much information he could muster. He was never one to run into something like this alone, yet he had a feeling that many of the other people in this room would be nothing more than fodder. Alexis seemed at least somewhat capable by his bearing. The giant might even be able to have the constitution to make it out alive. The rest...well to say the least Serion wouldn't trust them with anything important during this particular venture.
Serion DRinishad, Arrival of the Spotted Pidgeon, Arconis, Enamoria.
While he was not a great judge of character, he could tell which of these adventurers he would want to have covering his back; luckily, he would feel safe with most of them. While the last person to introduce themself, a certain Alexis Sapientia - ahem, Midshipman Alexis Sapientia - seemed a bit too lofty for Paul to take an immediate liking to him, he wasn't sure if he was just showing off or if it was his nature to hold himself above his "ordinary" companions. If it was the former Paul could readily understand, but if it was the latter, then the half-elf would have a hard time warming up to his company.
Paul Tyndal, Arrival of the Spotted Pidgeon, Arconis, Enamoria.
His unclear eyes made out two forms in the too-bright sunlight, Jaali Desseren and some punk who he wanted to slap mostly because he was already jealous.
Kimorr Illmatar, The Liar, the Witch, and the Garderobe,, Medonia, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
There was something about Alexis that deemed him worthy of being Jaa's one and only black star he was her plague, her bad luck, a worthy opponent with no true title. The young man most certainly had a knack for developing names and finding adjectives for the half-elf of fire: grape, bimbo, crossdresser. Now, an heiress? Blessed luck, thought Jaali. He had no idea she and Jaixin were one and the same.
Jaali Desseren, The Liar, the Witch, and the Garderobe,, Medonia, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
Eyes swept over the guests, she spotted a young man...or rather an adolescent entering...and munching out of the bag of seeds he had been given. The expression on his handsome face was priceless.
Saraid Dkany-Sapientia, Fireflies do dance~Siblings of Spring and Summer Ball, Medonia, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
As for Alexis, Nana noticed the young man quasi-harassing Kara. The older woman arched a brow and pursed her lips. Young people and drunkness... sheesh.
Nana Buxomia, Fireflies do dance~Siblings of Spring and Summer Ball, Medonia, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
What a sweetheart, Kara thought, putting my well being above his own.
Kara Amael, Fireflies do dance~Siblings of Spring and Summer Ball, Medonia, Sovereignty of Enamoria.

***Paternal Advice to a Cardinal...1491. For sig.
Lorenzo de Medici (1449-1492) was the unofficial ruler of Florence from 1469 until his death. He was a humanist, arts patron - and a skillful politician. In 1489 he manages to have his son Giovanni made a cardinal, at the age of 14. Giovanni later ruled as Pope Leo X (reigned 1513-1521) and was also a patron of the arts. In the letter here Lorenzo warns his son to avoid vice and luxury.
You, and all of us who are interested in your welfare, ought to esteem ourselves highly favored by Providence, not only for the many honors and benefits bestowed upon our house, but more particularly for having conferred upon us, in your person, the greatest dignity we have ever enjoyed. This favor, in itself so important, is rendered still more so by the circumstances with which it is accompanied, and especially by the consideration of your youth and of our situation in the world. The first that I would therefore suggest to you is that you ought to be grateful to God, and continually to recollect that it is not through your merits, your prudence, or your solicitude, that this event has taken place, but through his favor, which you can only repay by a pious, chaste and exemplary life; and that your obligations to the performance of these duties are so much the greater, as in your early years you have given some reasonable expectations that your riper age may produce such fruits. It would indeed be highly disgraceful, and as contrary to your duty as to my hopes, if, at a time when others display a greater share of reason and adopt a better mode of life, you should forget the precepts of your youth, and forsake the path in which you have hitherto trodden. Endeavor, therefore, to alleviate the burden of your early dignity by the regularity of your life and by your perseverance in those studies which are suitable to your profession. It gave me great satisfaction to learn, that, in the course of the past year, you bad frequently, of your own accord, gone to communion and confession; nor do I conceive that there is any better way of obtaining the favor of heaven than by habituating yourself to a performance of these and similar duties. This appears to me to be the most suitable and useful advice which, in the first instance, I can possibly give you.
I well know, that as you are now to reside in Rome, that sink of all iniquity, the difficulty of conducting yourself by these admonitions will be increased. The influence of example is itself prevalent; but you will probably meet with those who will particularly endeavor to corrupt and incite you to vice; because, as you may yourself perceive, your early attainment to so great a dignity is not observed without envy, and those who could not prevent your receiving that honor will secretly endeavor to diminish it, by inducing you to forfeit the good estimation of the public; thereby precipitating you into that gulf into which they had themselves fallen; in which attempt, the consideration of your youth will give them a confidence of success. To these difficulties you ought to oppose yourself with the greater firmness, as there is at present less virtue amongst your brethren of the college. I acknowledge indeed that several of them are good and learned men, whose lives are exemplary, and whom I would recommend to you as patterns of your conduct. By emulating them you will be so much the more known and esteemed, in proportion as your age and the peculiarity of your situation will distinguish you from your colleagues. Avoid, however, as you would Scylla or Charybdis, the imputation of hypocrisy; guard against all ostentation, either in your conduct or your discourse; affect not austerity, nor ever appear too serious. This advice you will, I hope, in time understand and practice better than I can express it.
Yet you are not unacquainted with the great importance of the character which you have to sustain, for you well know that all the Christian world would prosper if the cardinals were what they ought to be; because in such a case there would always be a good pope, upon which the tranquility of Christendom so materially depends. Endeavor then to render yourself such, that if all the rest resembled you, we might expect this universal blessing. To give you particular directions as to your behavior and conversation would be a matter of no small difficulty. I shall, therefore, only recommend, that in your intercourse with the cardinals and other men of rank, your language be unassuming and respectful, guiding yourself, however, by your own reason, and not submitting to be impelled by the passions of others, who, actuated by improper motives, may pervert the use of their reasons. Let it satisfy your conscience that your conversation is without intentional offense; and if, through impetuosity of temper, any one should be offended, as his enmity is without just cause, so it will not be very lasting. On this your first visit to Rome, it will, however, be more advisable for you to listen to others than to speak much yourself.
You are now devoted to God and the church: on which account you ought to aim at being a good ecclesiastic, and to shew that you prefer the honor and state of the church and of the apostolic see to every other consideration. Nor, while you keep this in view, will it be difficult for you to favor your family and your native place. On the contrary, you should be the link to bind this city closer to the church, and our family with the city; and although it be impossible to foresee what accidents may happen, yet I doubt not but this may be done with equal advantage to all: observing, however, that you are always to prefer the interests of the church.
You are not only the youngest cardinal in the college, but the youngest person that ever was raised to that rank; and you ought, therefore, to be the most vigilant and unassuming, not giving others occasion to wait for you, either in the chapel, the consistory or upon deputations. You will soon get a sufficient insight into the manners of your brethren. With those of less respectable character converse not with too much intimacy; not merely on account of the circumstance in itself, but for the sake of public opinion. Converse on general topics with all. On public occasions, let your equipage and address be rather below than above mediocrity. A handsome house and a well-ordered family will be preferable to a great retinue and a splendid residence. Endeavor to live with regularity, and gradually to bring your expenses within those bounds which in a new establishment cannot perhaps be expected. Silk and jewels are not suitable for persons in your station. Your taste will be better shown in the acquisition of a few elegant remains of antiquity, or in the collecting of handsome books, and by your attendants being learned and well-bred rather than numerous. Invite others to your house oftener than you receive invitations. Practise neither too frequently. Let your own food be plain, and take sufficient exercise, for those who wear your habit are soon liable, without great caution, to contract infirmities. The station of a cardinal is not less secure than elevated; on which account those who arrive at it too frequently become negligent; conceiving their object is attained and that they can preserve it with little trouble, This idea is often injurious to the life and character of those who entertain it. Be attentive, therefore, to your conduct, and confide in others too little rather than too much. There is one rule which I would recommend to your attention in preference to all others. Rise early in the morning. This will not only contribute to your health, but will enable you to arrange and expedite the business of the day; and as there are various duties incident to your station, such as the performance of divine service, studying, giving audience, and so forth, you will find the observance of this admonition productive of the greatest utility. Another very necessary precaution, particularly on your entrance into public life, is to deliberate every evening on what you may have to perform the following day, that you may not be unprepared for whatever may happen. With respect to your speaking in the consistory, it will be most becoming for you at present to refer the matters in debate to the judgment of his holiness2 alleging as a reason your own youth and inexperience. You will probably be desired to intercede for the favors of the pope on particular occasions. Be cautious, however, that you trouble him not too often; for his temper leads him to be most liberal to those who weary him least with their solicitations. This you must observe, lest you should give him offense, remembering also at times to converse with him on more agreeable topics; and if you should be obliged to request some kindness from him, let it be done with that modesty and humility which are so pleasing to his disposition. Farewell.

Impedimenta.
Heirlooms
- A lead seal with the diametrical size of an Aelyrian crown, bearing the image of three towers, with a double-headed eagle and a coronet surmounting the image of the towers.
- An engraved gold ring of office that bears great sentimental value.
- An aging and brittle thick cream parchment folded twice horizontally and twice vertically at the edges, and with an enormous red-wax seal that previously secured the package, bearing an image of three towers, and another image of a double-headed eagle surmounting the same. Inside is some spidery script in black ink, apparently written by a strong and learned hand, and verified with a large beribboned red wax seal with the image of the letter L surmounted by a double-headed eagle and a coronet.
- A smaller folded piece of parchment with the same spidery script, apparently more recent in authorship, but written in a shakier feminine hand. On its front is written the words c/o Alexis Sapieha, The Maze, Sherital Way, Taralon, while on the back lies attached a blue wax seal with the image of a swan.
- Alexis’ journal. Bound in leather, with the grand achievement of his arms as Hospodar and Metropolitan of Krytzillikinarnessus, and Heir to the House of Sapientia and the Osteyricjh lands, lovingly crafted on some expensive metal at the front cover, this is his most prized possession. This journal is a discreet and sacrosanct keeper of his personal memories and contains a self-sketched portrait of his mother, and other private thoughts.
- Deed to a certain apartment located in Taralon, Confederation of the Sherian. Valued at 1000 Crows. (Sold!)
Habiliments
De rigeur stuff. Unless declared otherwise, Alexis is usually dressed in his own black coat with tails, a long-sleeved tunic, cravat, similarly black cape with chain and clasps; black trousers and black riding boots, the latter worn from the knee downwards.
Imperial Navy Uniforms.
Sorcerer’s Robes. Received from Master Crochetny Crothney (former Headmaster) of the Rosa Academia Arcanum, these two flowing robes, both of them purple, have one silver band around each cuff. The silver band is currently broken in spots, almost like a pattern of dashes encircling the cuff, symbolizing the rank of an Initiate Sorcerer-in-Training. Using a technique called Activate enables the robe’s enchantment to sense the wearer’s power level, and causes the proper number of silver bands to appear in accordance with the wearer’s rank.
Standard student uniform of The Reg. Worn while on campus, this crimson suit and cravat, white shirt, khaki pants and black shoes ensemble marks the wearer as a normal bound student of the Regio Eruditonum Arconis, either belonging to the Fabricum, Dramaticum, Musicum, or mayhaps, even of the Arcanum—when the mages-in-training choose to blend into the morass that is the student body, and thereby feel quite unnoticed. A dark blue sweater is optionally substituted for the crimson suit come the wintertime.
Purchases from The Gilded Slipper, Daltina, Enamoria:
- Plain black cloak and black leather gloves.
- Two sets of a suitcoat ensemble: black coat with tails, white cotton shirt, vest and black trousers.
- Kneeish high black boots, loose trousers to the knee/just below, thigh long stiff necked coats (blue), Shako for headdress (Officers can wear either bicorne or tricorne), Warming undergarments, Full length formal cloaks with hoods (Classis main colour with secondary colour trim), Imperial Legion insignia on the back of the cloak (Officers can edged their cloak with red and yellow), Classis crest on right side of the chest, Full length bluecloak, Rank on the collar.
Chattels
- Imperial Visa. In the name of one Alexis Sapieha.
- Leather-covered metal flask of water, with an engraved stylized monogram of the letter A above the arms of Krytzillikinarnessus. This usually contains a sample of a sweet-smelling, amber-colored liquid, whose smooth flavor ignites a soft warmth in one’s stomach. ‘Twas perenially filled from a public defender’s decanter hidden behind a book on gardening in the Taralon palace library, or from a large bottle surreptitiously swiped from a certain red-headed footman’s room beside the palace cellars. As of late, however, it’s contents have been limited to the offerings of The Scholar’s Roost.
- Personal toiletry items (clean and pressed set of handkerchiefs, comb, mirror, tooth powder, nail clipper and file, ersatz toothbrush…all with Alexis’s monogram, of course.)
- Hand-Rolled Cigarilloes, Eunesian manufacture, with accompanying flint. These sin-sticks emit sweet-smelling smoke and a pleasing odour to the seasoned connosieur of fine tobaccoes, though the manufacturer’s label suggests that said smoke not be ingested. These cheroots are easily sourced from a female pilferer, or pinched from a drawer in the palace library. Most of the time, samples may be easily had by merely walking through the halls and closely examining the surroundings of the Palace in Taralon. Unfortunately, these get dearer as brightenings pass, away from the Sherian.
- The violated remains of Kimorr Illmatar's pipe.
- A fresh box of Hand-Rolled Cigarilloes, Eunesian manufacture. Fresh from Taralon.
- Ribbon-bound rolls of parchment. Verbose correspondence from Nikki Sea L'Evienne, smelling sweetly of cherry cigarilloes.
- A discount voucher that would expire in a pattern-- 10% off any and all purchases in the Spring and Summer Pet Paradise II, Grape and Barley, AlaDisaster, and Knight of Destiny II.
- Records parchment from the First Bank of Arconis. For Saraid.
- Prefect Restrivi's Gold Pocketwatch.
- Law license signed by Prefect Restrivi of Taralon, Confederation of the Sherian.
- Two bottles of blood-red Carmelyan Sangre.
- Keys to Conclavis Chanliya, Port Alyxandrya, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
- A box with pieces of colored, numbered glass on it, a souvenir from a Night to Remember in Arconis.
[list]The Medal of Justice.
Quote:
With the tenaciousness of centuries the human ivory held on, so that the youth had to work for a good few sweating minutes to work the little rectangular thing out of the grasp of its previous owner. Fortunately enough its previous owner had not thought (he was a child, after all) to lock the thing before dying; the old wood cracked in Alexis' hands and as he swung the top open the hinges tore out of the crackling wood with a tearing sound of protest. They yielded and disclosed the contents of the box:
A child's treasure: shards of glass, twinkling brilliantly in the light of the torch as if they had been polished clean only the day before. Clear, blue, red, green - all the colours deep and rich, none bigger than a fingerlength in size or width. Someone - not the child, surely, - had drilled a hole in them and strung them together on a string. Yet their edges were sharp enough to serve as knives, as Alexis would well attest to if he were not careful.
Disappointing for a youth of high ideals and earthy tastes, perhaps. The glass winked and laughed, tinkling merrily. Yet even if they had been keys... where was the keyhole? And some ancient scribe laughed huius, huius, huius, like the hacking of an old rheumatic man in the torchlight. For on each glass shard was incised a symbol. +(U)+ on the blue; +(A)+ on the green; and +(V)+ on the red. If there was one on the shard of clear glass Alexis could not discern it: instead it was sprinkled with circles, round circles shallowly incised across both sides of the glass.

- Wanderlust, a one-masted sloop, ten knots maximum speed. Home-ported at Port Alyxandrya.
Armaments
- Black leather-handled dagger with Alexis engraved at the base of the handle. Given on his 15th pattern birth-brightening, the same brightening as his investiture as Hospodar of Krytzillikinarnessus. It is the symbol of the aforesaid temporal office.
- Imperial Navy Officer's Cutlass. Curved shaped crossguard linked to guarded hilt (dark metal and edged in red for officers), Guarded hilt with classis crest embossed (light metal and edged in red for officers), Imperial crest on the cross of the guard (light metal) , Curved, single edged blade with pointed tip , Scabbard is red for officers and yellow for enlisted men.
Force Bolt and Star of Force Initiate Sorcery Spells. See ‘abracadabras’.
Repositories
Brown leather rucksack with an engraved stylized monogram of the letter A above the arms of Krytzillikinarnessus at the flap. Alexis’s second most-prized possession, this trusty receptacle is nearly always with him wherever he goes.
Inside:

Heirlooms, habiliments, and chattels (see above)
A small volume bearing the title: "The Legacy of Captain Mateo Solis, and other Wondrous Tales of the Sea told by Captain Iceheart." (Wedding gift from Ffess)

One wooden footlocker, with the hand-painted words, A. Sapientia, AFS The Sentinel on it in black at the top. Contains a compass, a white duffel bag, two sets of duty uniforms, a longcoat for inclement weather, a white crevatte for the neck, and is securely locked by means of a thick knot that would take some time cutting with a dagger…or mere seconds for one learned in the intricacies of rope-twirling. (to be arcanically locked) Currently stored in Hyacinth’s Macellum.
Inside:
Equines:
A black mare elven windstepper of 6 ordinations, well-broke, was purchased at auction during the Aelyria Prime Horse Fair.
Domiciliums:
Room atop Hyacinth's Macellum, Arconis, Sovereignty of Enamoria.

Magicks.
Abracadabras (Currently held in abeyance)
Deflect. Instant duration. Single or other targets. Close proximity range. The Sorcerer can bend the fabric of space so as to cause a projectile - either physical or magical - to veer off to the side of its original path. This spell becomes increasingly useful to deflect a single, oncoming danger. At greater proficiencies, larger items can be successfully deflected.
Force Bolt. Instant duration. Single or other targets. Close or medium proximity range.
Harnessing the power of force, the Sorcerer can construct a spherical mass of repelling force to send hurling towards an opponent. The force generates light to moderate damage, and at greater proficiencies, a larger bolt may be used to cause greater damage.
Gate. Instant duration. Single or self targets. Close proximity range. Students of Sorcery learn early on how to charge their homes, or a single place of permanent dwelling, with the essence of energy. When a Sorcerer casts the Gate spell, the field of space breaks open to form an instantaneous and momentary aura that teleports the caster back to the home. The destination of the Gate spell, the Anchor, can only ever exist in a single place that is completely secured and controlled by the caster.
Lock. Instant duration. Single or other targets. Close proximity range. Fashioning a restraining device of his own making, the Sorcerer can place upon a door, chest or other closing object a magical lock that will prevent opening by others using conventional means. The lock can be taken down by either magic or other very creative means beyond the scope of this description. At greater proficiencies, the Lock spell is more difficult to bypass.
Open. Instant duration. Single closed or locked targets. Close or medium proximity range. Being intimately familiar with the binary state of movable objects, the Sorcerer can cause a closed or locked item to give way and open, breaking through simple locking mechanisms. At greater proficiencies, the Open spell may be used to break through more difficult locks or magical restraints.
Sphere of Light. Temporary duration. Area of effect as target. Touch or close proximity range. Reshaping the essence of matter, the Sorcerer can imbue an area with a glowing sphere of cool light which will provide illumination over the immediate near range. The Sphere of Light dissipates either when the spellcaster decided to close down the spell in order to have additional energy for more involved casting, or if the Sorcerer loses his concentration. At greater proficiencies, larger spheres of different colors may be conjured for a greater duration.
Star of Force. Instant duration. Single or other targets. Close proximity range. The Sorcerer can conjure forth a refined blade of penetrating energy that can both pierce and slash. By releasing the force blade, it will be sent spiralling towards the designated opponent and cause light to medium damage. At greater proficiencies, the Star of Force can spin at a faster rate and thus cause more damage.

Idylls of the Prince.
Memories of days gone by.
Snippets from "A Courtesy Call at the Governor's Palace".
Quote:
Even old Boney, the gardener at Habichtsbergen, needs the Chief Housekeepers advice on where to place the petunias.
Why am I reminded of Old Tom and Jerry the Rat? Old Tom was long retired from honorable service and stood guard for the pension and to teach a good thing or two to the younger folk, but Jerrygood Ioannes, I dont even know why Father bothered to keep such a strange fellow. He said something about Jerry being a compulsive gambler, but Jerr-O seemed to have learned his lesson after a stint at Debtors Prison. If the underbutlers words were to be trusted, Jerry was the estate bookie. Perhaps that explains why he loved rattling on about numbers every time hed hand Byrons reins over to me for our early brightening walk. Good thing I never believed his rambling either, lest that burn a pretty hole in my own purse.
Magnificent example of horseflesh, but I have to admit my affections still lie with Byron, at home.
I mean
well
its just that I never really learned how to ridewell, not as good as, say, one of our cavalrymen, but I do know the basics of caring for the horse and such. Alexis gave an embarrassed smile. Im afraid Ive only been up to
well
harmless things, really, cantering around a circle, leading Byron to a stream, that sort of thing. Never really learned how to jump over fences, or spear a target while mounted. Mother was appalled that I was even considering such dangerous things, but Father seemed to have approved. A pity that Mum never lost sight of me nor Byron since I mentioned it. Another harmless grin. My equerry even said that the stablemaster had a stern telling-to from Mummy, and that theyd lose their livelihoods before they could even say equestrian, the moment she saw me and Byron prancing about like some hussar or somesuch.
Ah, so blues and golds seem to be the motif here. Its certainly very different from the militant scarlet-and-black Father seems to have preferred. Its certainly seems more airy and inviting here, instead of the gloomy precincts of Habichtsbergen, making it look more like a tawdry mausoleum. He likewise gave a tight-lipped smile and nod to Mrs. Dandybrale, the housekeeper. By Ioannes, shes the spitting image of our cook.
It was a few brightenings past my sixteenth birth-brightening, and we were playing around, it been a cycle-end, with no schola and all. She wanted me to show her my room, and so I did. I was seated on my bed, gesturing towards the copy of a Sanét at the wall, and explaining the differences between Sonét and Sanét, when she stops in mid-step, crinkles her nose, gives me this wicked smile, and then just, well, kisses me, squarely on the lips. Alexis chuckled further, and tried to stifle it with the top of his right hand. Sorry. He shook his head. I didnt know what to do
its true, and Ill admit it, it was the first time Id ever been kissed like that. He shrugged his shoulders.
Of course, Mother didnt seem to see things my way, she claimed Id been desecrating my holy office as Metropolitan of my fiefwhich the Patriarch had just bestowed a couple of brightenings backand how I ought to have been ashamed, rolling around in my bed with such a female. I wasnt rolling around in my bed with her! Mum exagerrates. It seems Father didnt look too kindly either, after finding out Catherine was the daughter of one of our tenants. He cut off my allowance, forbade me to hold revenues from my fief or to raise any new tolls or taxes, and then sent me here, saying something about waiting for the scandal to die down, and ordering me to safeguard that packet at all costs, and to present it to the Governor after three eras after hearing no further word from him. To this brightening, I dont understand it at all. It was just a kiss. It was innocent
but three eras is surely such a long time, wouldnt you think? I dont understand whats so scandalous about it at all
Alexis said to summarize, staring into his cup of tea. Then he looked up at Milo.
Youre Public Defender, sir? Might I suppose that youre Captain of the local militia, then? Weve a similar position in Osteyricjhthats north of here, somewhere in the Eunesiascalled the Defensor Civitatis. No-one wanted to take it, not even after Father doubled the pay. Always kept the poor fellow awake darkenings, tending to reports of lost children, the odd thief or two, and other strange things that go bump in the night. No, wait
Alexis, you idiot! Dont you remember a single fething thing from schola?

Alexis seen through other eyes.
Alexis seen through other eyes
But by the gods, the boy could talk...Diana’s britches, the boy needed a little tutelage in practical experience...The boy was of an age to know his own mind, even if he didn’t.
--Milo Du’Galle L’Evienne, “A Courtesy Call at the Governor’s Palace”, Taralon, The Sherian.
He was young compared to the elf that had occupied her thoughts for so long. But not so unappealing in contrast, after all.
--Nikki L’Evienne, “Introductory Wine, Women, and Song”, Taralon, The Sherian.
Good luck to him though, if he thought he’d find a submissive wife within the realm of politics, perhaps any realm. On paper, sure. But happy wife, happy life, Milo maintained and it rarely had much to do with a husband’s authority.
--Milo Du’Galle L’Evienne, “A Study in Scarlet”, Taralon, The Sherian.
However when the boy stopped outside of sword range it did cause the big man to smile more fully. It seems that someone had taught him something in the past. And, to be fair, that tree would never bother the youth again!
--Hannas Darkblade, "Playing at soldier", Taralon, The Sherian.
Alexis seemed the kind to carry [ideas] out with a youthful energy Tito had almost forgotten since his early military days.
—Motito Gil’dae, “Student Commons”, Arconis, Enamoria.
If this is the Empire's Future...we're all doomed.
--Master Nathan 'Crochety' Crothney, Rosa Academia Arcanum, The Reg, Arconis, Enamoria.
"Alexis, my boy...your understanding of arcana is about as obfuscated as your character."--Master Nathan 'Crochety' Crothney, Rosa Academia Arcanum, The Reg, Arconis, Enamoria.
It was neither the majesty of his gallant form or the promise of a new lover that is so often the force that drives a lady to subdue a man like a mad conquistador, but the compassion of a virtuous being that brought the young maiden so nigh in distance to the young Sapientia.
–Alexandra Woulofen, “Angels in Aelyria”, Diana, Sodality of Carmelyn.
Even from the distance (that Jaa could easily cover in seconds) that stood between them, Jaa saw blue eyes, hair that could easily spark the envy of the bald, and blemishless cheeks. How her fingers wished to pinch those cheeks...Oh dear, he looked like a shorter and tinier version of Jeimbus…and this one here was a hopeless romantic.
Alexis seemed both charming and pleasant to behold, both characteristics which would not keep him a boy for very long at all…he was a tall drink of water for his age…He was honest, at the very least, and not a pompous, self-important brat like most noble-born boys were wont to be.
—Mekare, ‘The Lady Taryn’, “Days go by…”, Arconis, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
With straight flowing hair that looked as though he had been dragged through a hedge backwards, blue eyed, handsome in a fatuous weak jawed aristocratic manner and dressed in what looked remarkably like a school uniform. The creature smelt of tobacco and stale alcohol and it wras fairly obvious that this nasty little boy was leading a life of dissolution at such a tender age.
—Palacrisis D’ Jones, “Away from the Road and Over the Mountain”, Arconis, Enamoria.
Aazill was quite surprised to have been greeted by anyone, let alone a human who, even by elf standards, was fairly attractive...The fact that he admitted his own uselessness somewhat surprised her, for she had the impression he was more one to boast of what he could do than admit to what he couldn't.
—Aazill Moonsong, “Walking the Streets”, Daltina, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
–Aedile Englebert Potts, Aedile's Office, Arconis, Enamoria.
—Raegik of Angurvad, “Arrival of the Spotted Pidgeon”, Arconis, Enamoria.
He seemed decent enough, she thought to herself. At least he had given some positive feedback of some kind. The rest? Robyn gave a mental shrug. Bunch of bloody idiots, she considered. Lets just jump in there and hope it works out. Lah lah lah....
--Robyn Lescartes Caliban, "Arrival of the Spotted Pidgeon", Arconis, Enamoria.
—The Duke Serra-Kane, “Arrival of the Spotted Pidgeon”, Arconis, Enamoria.
—Serion D’Rinishad, “Arrival of the Spotted Pidgeon”, Arconis, Enamoria.
—Paul Tyndal, “Arrival of the Spotted Pidgeon”, Arconis, Enamoria.
His unclear eyes made out two forms in the too-bright sunlight, Jaali Desseren and some punk who he wanted to slap mostly because he was already jealous.
—Kimorr Illmatar, “The Liar, the Witch, and the Garderobe,”, Medonia, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
There was something about Alexis that deemed him worthy of being Jaa's one and only black star— he was her plague, her bad luck, a worthy opponent with no true title. The young man most certainly had a knack for developing names and finding adjectives for the half-elf of fire: grape, bimbo, crossdresser. Now, an heiress? Blessed luck, thought Jaali. He had no idea she and Jaixin were one and the same.
—Jaali Desseren, “The Liar, the Witch, and the Garderobe,”, Medonia, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
Eyes swept over the guests, she spotted a young man...or rather an adolescent entering...and munching out of the bag of seeds he had been given. The expression on his handsome face was priceless...His eyes were some of the most expessive she'd ever seen. The clear blue quality seemed to reflect right into her heart.
–Saraid Dkany-Sapientia, “Fireflies do dance~Siblings of Spring and Summer Ball”, Medonia, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
As for Alexis, Nana noticed the young man quasi-harassing Kara. The older woman arched a brow and pursed her lips. Young people and drunkness... sheesh.
—Nana Buxomia, “Fireflies do dance~Siblings of Spring and Summer Ball”, Medonia, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
What a sweetheart, Kara thought, putting my well being above his own.
–Kara Amael, “Fireflies do dance~Siblings of Spring and Summer Ball”, Medonia, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
Such a boy, you are, you find yourself in Jaedaxia, and never have you seen so many beautiful women all around you at once. You can’t decide on just one to look at, so you try to look at them all. Be careful you do not upset one by eyeing another that catches your fancy.
--Mademoiselle Sincera Veluve, Plus ca change, plus c’est le meme chose. Jaedexia, Imperial Protectorate of Northumbria.
Indeed, he reminded her quite a bit of Milo. Maybe it was just the similar cigarillo, or the way he crossed his leg reminiscent of the way Milo always managed to find a way to prop his feet up while looking both the scholar and the rogue. Or it could have been the grin...that grin which said he was far from seraphic despite a more than obvious charm. Such charm wasn't lost on J'lyara, though she remained oblivious to any secret studying of her physical attributes the young Sapienta might have been engaging in. In fact, she was even relieved to realize he wasn't looking at her in that lecherous way those of the opposite gender often did, which assisted in her feeling more comfortable than she likely should have.
--Lady J'lyara d'Jones, Have You Met Miss Jones?, Diana, Sodality of Carmelyn.
On the opposite side, Liselle spotted two young men speaking, and one caught her eye. Her first thoughts of him centered on his clothing, and general appearance. A dress uniform, so defiantly in the military, and dashing at that. His features weren’t recognizable to her, and Liselle prided herself in knowing as many people in Medonia as possible, so he was most likely passing through during this festive holiday season. To say that he was handsome was a gross understatement. He was beautiful, in a masculine way of course, and to one that had just started to notice the beauty in the opposite sex, this was saying much...The blond is quite lovely in my opinion…and who can’t resist a man in uniform, but I take him for the type that won’t make a move.
--Liselle Vampyler, Resurrection of life with the purity of the snow (Medonian Winter Ball) , Medonia, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
The young half-elf moved her light-brown hair from her eyes and examined this young male. He was dressed like a officer in the Navy and was kind of good-looking with his straight flowing hair and his innocent blue eyes. There was something a little shy about him, also.
--Sitandria, Resurrection of life with the purity of the snow (Medonian Winter Ball) , Medonia, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
But everyone was having so much fun. And him, the handsome one, across the table... he seemed to be handling everything with perfect grace. I wish I had that kind of strength, she thought to herself as she eyed Alexis, grinning like a madman over his champagne flute. The man probably had every reason to smile; he was at a table full of women, several of which were of quite high society indeed...His smile made her wonder... This was certainly a very interesting male to be hanging around with. For one, he seemed more or less unconcerned that he was surrounded by pretty females of nearly every shape and size. If anything, he was delighted with the notion... At least, that was the general impression she got when he responded to Sitandria...He was cute when he got that far-away, misty look in his eyes.
--Amaris Bluefeather, Resurrection of life with the purity of the snow (Medonian Winter Ball) , Medonia, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
The image of the up and coming young officer; spit and polish, competency and precision. The ladies liked that in a man, and the gentlemen were definitely at an advantage at this table.
--Moranor Andares, Resurrection of life with the purity of the snow (Medonian Winter Ball) , Medonia, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
There was also the uniformed chap; his eyes watched Liselle wherever she went. Alia'ny hoped the young man wasn't fancying that he was being subtle about it, for the fact that he liked her shone like a beacon on his handsome features. He was just a trifle too young for her, or she might have invited him to dance...Alexis really was quite handsome, she noted. It was too bad that he was definitely too young for her!
--Alia'ny Vampyler, Resurrection of life with the purity of the snow (Medonian Winter Ball) , Medonia, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
Looking back at Alexis again he had noticed his observation of him, which definately was not a compliment, although he didn't doubt the young man's fear of such a presence. Looking on with a smirk he continued to watch the young man's mooching, it was quite funny and quite similar to what Stephan had done when younger, although of course the young man was overly forward and weak in his approach. However, it was still humorous to watch. The young man had some work to his approach and finish, but Stephan knew at one point he had needed much work as well, although he would never ever admit that to anyone.
--Stephan Woulofen, Resurrection of life with the purity of the snow (Medonian Winter Ball) , Medonia, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
For Alexis to have come looking for Liselle was an act of chivalry like she had rarely seen. Her heart swelled with pride to know that some people still had that strong sense of what was the right thing to do. Kindness, Aly felt, was a trait nearly always worth searching for, both in its rarity, and the sheer courage it sometimes took to express it. And here it was, in its purest form.
--Alysa'adi Undersea , Resurrection of life with the purity of the snow (Medonian Winter Ball) , Medonia, Sovereignty of Enamoria.

“Duty is indeed the sublimest word in our language, but that is what makes us noble. Instead of succumbing to our every human whim and passion, we decline; we stand for what we ought, we keep faith with our responsibilities, we maintain the sacredness of our ancestral obligations. That is our birthright, and that is our proud heritage.”
He smiled, a warm, loving smile, taking hold of her shoulders, and squeezing the same, making her snap out of her weepy reverie.
“The price for our lives of privilege is undying, unflinching obedience. Wallow not in sadness, instead, rejoice with your cares. The manner in which you deal with your burden is the true test of the quality of a noble. Greatness lies not in the robes you wear, but on the steel of the spirit in which you clothe yourself with. Take heed of this, Bianca. Take heed.”
***
"If you choose to play with such a toy." he said, his expression becoming serious again "you might wish to consider learning to use it properly. Even if a career as a soldier does not appeal and you wish a more peaceful life, continuing such a life can often involve being able to defend yourself from threat. A good blade can be helpful in that, but only if you can use it passing well."
-advice on blades and swordplay by hannas
“You know what this reminds me of…?” he said, somewhat matter-of-factly to his sister-in-culinary arms, a contented boy’s smile on his face.
“This reminds me of Arakmatian Delight. They used to serve this at the Weserdammerung Vale Hunt. Comfort food for me, in a sense. Brings back a lot of childhood memories.” A
“At first I selected this mainly because it was a sample case, just one of many showing how politics can easily affect justice, how justice can affect politics; no, more importantly, how influence can easily affect justice, and how money can influence political processes, all the more.” He smirked, and then pouted, seemingly disappointed.
“ I just learned—and for this I can accept being called a naďf—that our justice system, our justice bureaucracy is so overly understaffed. This is a travesty, considering that not enough advocates are there to defend the people, particularly the ones who haven’t money to file suit, much less defend themselves from it. It’s interesting how it’s even declared an inherent right. Anyone who is learned in the law must risk getting robbed in the course of duty; anyone learned in the law must risk candlemarks carefully studying every fact, every iota, every comma, every shred of evidence…for lives are at stake in the end.” Finally, a direct look at Milo, the man.
“At first I thought law and justice were the very same things; on reviewing this and other cases, I’ve realized how frightfully disparate and exclusive they can be,” he observed, noting how his vocabulary had improved through the course of all that reading; soon he’d be spouting mouthfuls of irregular verbs and murmur dipthongs, not to mention adverbial clauses in the course of all this. He gave a larger smile, and hoisted his water glass in salute and silent tribute. “I think that’s the real difference between paper law and trial law. At first one may think all this paperwork, this legal theory, is all abstract…but on walking into a courtroom, one realizes that issues aren’t that abstract after all. Terms are always being clarified, re-clarified, and re-interpreted on a case-to-case basis,” he inhaled, and took a sip, for that was certainly a mouthful, “…but you were right, Milo, the law can be used in almost any way.”
He stepped away from the podium with a confident grin, and gazed at every member of the audience quite magisterially before summing up the entire experience.
“Now I know why people think government officials are out of touch with reality. With all these new laws they tend to write,” he waved his test case as an example, “…it tends to make people doubt their sincerity, particularly if the officiles spend all brightening cooped up with parchment instead of people.”
“I’ve also learned that Truth can also be relative. Well, any decent person can seek the truth. As advocates, that should be our paramount concern. We should wholeheartedly seek the truth, the completely whole and unvarnished truth. As for us common folk, in all our dealings, so should we, Missus Dandybrale. So should we, [i]Master Bordemann.”
***
milo
”Truth is indeed relative, and at it’s extremes, depends on whose truth. As for justice, it’s a sad revelation but an apt one in some cases. Often law does not equal justice, though for all intents and purposes, it should. It’s not the writing of it so much, that’s at fault. But those who might interpret it for their own means. For every possible loophole in one man’s favor, another man will find another to circumvent the first. It’s the flaws of those involved that tend to muck up the process. Thus, often it might seem that justice is held hostage by politics, position and ambition. The truth will set you free?” he added with a wide grin. ”That’s the job of an advocate, an inquisitor or magistrate at their best, and not their worst. To make sure that law prevails, and not it’s ugly cousin ambition. It’s a tough challenge to take on. Whatever the case,” he added with a wider grin in conclusion. ”Fine job…you’re well on your way to becoming a wild eyed radical to be accused of inciting rebellion and social and political upheaval…Welcome to the club,” he jested from all appearances, though he’d been accused of as much himself.

Quotable quotations/Words to the wise.
Alexis in his own words.
On Urge.

“There are times when…well…sometimes I wish I wasn’t who I am, and that I could be like any other kid, do all the things social convention wouldn’t have me do, like annoy passerby with pranks, throw stones and break windows, and get myself into all sorts of trouble, running away from the constables, just for the pleasure of it,”

On Love.
Quote:
"Her eyes were as translucent as crystal balls, and her lips as pliant as silk.
"She was the woman of my dreams…yet I fell for her because of her pure uncorrupted heart. In her I found a kindred spirit that wanted to break free, just like me, yet while my prison consisted of a gilded cage called Habichtsbergen Palace, her prison was a lack of money, and a very simple commoner’s pedigree.”
His eyes looked down on the table, and he gave a slight sigh.
“I loved her for her simplicity, her lack of pretentions, and for her innocence. We were both the same, Milo, we were both dreamers. I dreamt of living free, to have a life I chose, instead of one mapped out for me. Her dreams were more humble: all she wanted was a strip of land, a stone cabin, a shop, perhaps; but most of all, she wanted me at her side. I wouldn’t have hesitated to take her to a priest, but I was still not of an age. I could have given her her dreams, easily, and she would have helped give me mine.”
Alexis gave a wistful smile and locked eyes with the Earl L’Evienne. “Milo, with her by my side, I would have been content.” He shrugged his shoulders as a gesture of indifference. “Stripped of my titles and possessions, as it were, I would have been glad to call her my sole treasure, and I couldn’t care less who knew it, and what they thought of it.” Alexis leaned back in his chair.
“Once you’ve awakened with a warm body at your side, tousled her hair to see her sleeping smile, you know everything’s all right with the world, and everything is as it should be. To be able to spend a morning doing nothing but admiring her face, stroking her cheek to ease her troubled sleep, or to just stand under a tree in the afternoon suns, cradling her face to my chest to help ease her sorrow…Milo, truly, aren’t these the marks of a life well-lived?” Alexis sighed and looked up with animated eyes, his arms, relaxed on the armrests of his chair.
“To have one’s love at one’s side, to know she wants you, and you alone, and to repose in that confidence has got to be one of the greatest prizes in the world. To see the joy in her eyes everytime she looks at you, and knowing you are the reason for her joy; to know that is sufficient salve for one’s brighteningly problems. To be content standing within each other’s tight arms, speaking no words, communicating only through sight and feel, surely…to be able to have that is sufficient reason to say, ‘paradise on Telath is here’.”

Why Sorcery?/ Why The Navy?
Quote:
“Why sorcery, Master Crothney?” He pursed his lips at that and leaned against the windowsill. “Why sorcery, in particular, instead of the other disciplines?” A faint smirk of contemplation appeared on his smooth face, and he took another deep breath before opening his mouth.
“I’ve been reading about the…arts, sir, and I managed to find a treatise outlining all of them. While growing up, they said that I had a gift for grasping the powers of the multiverse. I can pretty much read minds, in the conventional sense, that is, by simply looking at one’s eyes. It’s an innate blessing Ioannes gave me, I suppose, that, and a kindly sensitive heart. That crosses out mysticism. I’m a good healer, and even if I am a priest of sorts,” he said, fingering the fishlike emblem he wore around his neck, “…it’s not exactly something I’d like as a career. Necromancy, that cousin of mine had fallen to, and I’m not exactly an adherent of the dwellers of the underworld, and I’ve no wish to live my life on the run. As to stone magic, I saw not much use in it, as carting rocks around isn’t exactly my concept of utilizing magic. With regard to elementalism,” the kid gave a painful shrug and a sheepish smile. “Let’s just say that in Vagaran society—that’s my father’s side of the family—practitioners of this particular art aren’t that welcomed. And since I’m an heir to that particular culture, I’d rather not go looking around for trouble.” He gave a short smile.
“Now sorcery, sorcery…” he emphasized with a raised finger, “…sorcery is probably the best discipline of them all. Why conjure monsters from above when one can simply step into another location,” he snapped his fingers, “…just as you did earlier?” He raised both hands in an innocent gesture. “I’ve had a hankering to lock others out of my business as well, certainly safer than one’s crowns at the safes of the Imperial Bank!”
“I suppose it’s also because this particular arcanic discipline suits my nature. I’m not really a confrontational person. I’d rather work things out by dialogue, but if that doesn’t work, then I’d rather step aside and go somewhere else.” Another sheepish smile. “Another reason why I’m thinking of a stint in the Imperial Navy instead of the Imperial Army after this. Wielding a sword and plunging through mud is nice and all, but not exactly my cup of tea. Besides,” he raised his right hand to present his ring of office, “…seafaring’s in my blood. Most of my ancestors who’ve taken the military route have often selected salt wind in one’s face instead of the de rigeur cavalry mount of an officer. Then again,” he grinned finally, “ …perhaps it’s because the Navy has a less rigid tradition with regard to spirits.” He patted his pants pocket affectionately, and then put a hand to his forehead.

On Duty, Nobility, and Greatness.
Quote:
Take heed.”

On the Feudal Contract.
Quote:

So his subordinate went bad, eh? No wonder Serra-Kane wants this taken care of quietly. Bad form to have to resort to external forces when all that’s involved is a minor matter of the feudal contract.

Incidental Learning.
In the course of my roleplaying in the truly-wonderful world that is Aelyria, I’ve managed to come across some truly interesting, if not absolutely profound words that have managed to find their way into a standard post. Here are but a few:
His Gracious Honor Milo Ducet L’Evienne, Earl Du’Galle; Public Defender of Taralon, First Rogue of the Sherian.
On the fine gentlemanly art of smoking.
Quote:
“I suspect your failed success was due to little more than a lack of one simple notion. Cigarillo, cigar and pipe smoke is not to inhale, but savor,” [Milo] said with a serious regard of his own smoke, an idle puff as he watched the rings of smoke drift into the air. ”Draw on it gently, effortlessly, let the smoke drift over your senses, savor it, then release it. It’s an art,” he vowed in all seriousness. “The technique is as much a part of the satisfaction as the tobacco itself.”

|
The Hon. Miss Nikki Sea L’Evienne.
On unsolicited advice.
Quote:
”By the gods, don’t listen to a word he says,” came a voice from the top of the stairs. A feminine one by any standards. ”Taking Rioughe’s advice will have every woman for leagues bent on skinning you alive.”
–From Introductory Wine, Women, and Song; set in The Gubernatorial Palace, Taralon, Confederation of the Sherian.
|
His Late Imperial Excellency Hannas Darkblade, former Imperial Marshal and Governor of The Sherian.
On blades and swordplay.
Quote:
"If you choose to play with such a toy," he said, his expression becoming serious again. "...you might wish to consider learning to use it properly. Even if a career as a soldier does not appeal and you wish a more peaceful life, continuing such a life can often involve being able to defend yourself from threat. A good blade can be helpful in that, but only if you can use it passing well."
–From Playing at Soldier; set in The Gubernatorial Palace, Taralon, Confederation of the Sherian.
|
Mekare, The Lady Taryn.
On peace of mind.
Quote:
“I wish only that you find what you seek, and that you should be content in the quiet hours of twilight when you have only your thoughts to keep you company. That, my dear, is peace, and I pray that you find it, as well."
–From Days go by; set in the Regio Eruditonum Arconis, Arconis, Sovereignty of Enamoria.
|
Her Gracious Honor Jaali Desseren, Prefect of Medonia.
On the proper attitude towards facing life.
Quote:
"No one has the right to take away any life and it doesn't matter if ye take away yer own life. Unless we're elves, we all die eventually, so ye should look forward with yer chin high and face all the problems that come with life. Drink if ye must, drink away yer sorrows. Come! I have plenty of the beloved substance called booze. Drink! Drink and mayhaps then ye will wake up!"
–From The Liar, the Witch, and the Garderobe; set within the Faillegrove Park, Medonia, Sovereignty of Enamoria.

His Gracious Honor Milo Ducet L’Evienne, Earl Du’Galle; Public Defender of Taralon, First Rogue of the Sherian.
On Truth.
Quote:
–From A Study in Scarlet; set in The Gubernatorial Palace, Taralon, Confederation of the Sherian.

It’s not ludicrous, Faust, nor are you a fool for believing in such a thing. Hope is a powerful emotion. It can make things possible that may not have come to pass, just by believing in it."
