Mogan Ciderbraid

Mogan
Name: Mogan Ciderbraid
Race: Dwarf

Credit to Mates Laurentiu

Age: 55 Ordinations
Birth Brightening: 21 Cryxatum, Thera
Home Town: Zerdargia

Physical Description:

Mogan is short and somewhat stocky, like most dwarves, but she possesses a lean, pantherine grace, as if ready to pounce at a moment’s notice.

Her straw-like hair is the colour of burnished copper, wild and windblown atop her head, swept back behind her ears and tied in rough braids clasped with leather. Her hair trails down from her temples in braided sideburns tucked also behind her ears and hanging down from the corners of her jaw. These too are braided and set with green glass beads. Her face conveys a sort of mischievous cunning, her emerald green eyes flashing and glittering with savage laughter. The smell of leather and sweat and mud clings to her like perfume.

She wears tight plaid leggings of red and green, torn and ripped at the knees, and a sleeveless tunic furred at the shoulders and cut low at her breast. A thick girdle cinches up her middle, from which hang pouches and tools, a knife and a silver trinket of a drinking horn identifying her as attached to Clan Burk. Her leather boots are ragged and muddy, the simple treads of a lowborn dwarf that have seen many miles of hardscrabble trekking beneath their thinning soles.

She carries a dwarven shortbow—made from a thick and sturdy plank but tapered at the ends and set with iron at the end of each limb and at the knocking point. Not an elegant weapon, and with far less range than a slender elven bow, but with power enough to put an arrow through a barrel.

Personality:

Mogan is a defiant, sarcastic and argumentative young dwarf with a fondness for creative swearing and vulgar jokes. However, this outward demeanor conceals keen senses, a shrewd mind, and remarkable insight.

She has little patience with social etiquette and chafes against the conservative and often rigid characteristics of dwarven society, with a particular dislike for arrogant authority figures. She says what she thinks and behaves as she pleases, often oblivious to how her actions might offend others.

She identifies with her working class roots, respecting those who craft or build or plow. Mogan has a great love for the wilds, and spent much of her youth exploring the hinterlands of Zerdargia. She is quick witted and can come off as acerbic or even insulting. Many of her older dwarven peers remark they’d like to put her over their knee and wallop some sense into the girl, but her love of humour and otherwise positive disposition can be disarming.

Characteristics: Brash, impulsive, lusty, spontaneous, intimidating, vulgar.

Background:

Mogan’s deadbeat father left her mother shortly before the girl was born, and her mother died shortly after. Mogan was raised by her elderly grandfather, who made a decent living as a hunter and trapper before a run-in with a Dreadbear left him with one less leg. Since then the irascible old dwarf turned mainly to gambling to make a meagre coin, resulting in unstable times of plenty and times of hardship, based upon his luck and the level of drunkenness during his play. Mogan’s childhood was thus marked by anxiety and uncertainty, and she took up her grandfather’s former profession to supplement the family diet with snared rabbits or the odd bit of game. She turned to the hinterlands not just to help support herself and her maimed grandfather, but as an escape. She found the lure of the wild irresistible. She found the prairie and forest and hills a welcome change from the city; the rustle of wind over treetops much more preferable to the din of craftsmen and smoke of forges and animals are far less judgmental than dwarven society. Having tasted the pleasure of life in its purest, most primitive state, her spirit is beginning to reject the trappings of civilization and wholeheartedly embrace the challenges of the untamed wilderness. Mogan began to spend more and more of her time amongst the wilds, developing a strong sense of the value of the land and a duty to protect it from despoilment.

Her grandfather gradually lost his sight and became more and more dependent on the girl for meat and coin. Currently the old dwarf is more or less bedridden, and suffers from dementia and visions of times past. Mogan has been returning to Zerdargia daily now to care for him, bringing in fresh game and furs to sell and meat to cook for her grandfather.

Mogan’s grandfather is a gruff, taciturn old poacher and trapper with a foul disposition and bitterness towards life. Born to Clan Burk, he eschewed the brewer’s profession and instead took to the wild lands. He was a proud and renowned hunter in his day, and a decorated scout pathfinder for the King’s army. An ill-fated encounter with a Dreadbear ended his career—he lost a leg to the beast and became mired in alcoholism and gambling. He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom died young to war or plague, and raised his sole granddaughter. Mogan remembers him as a kindly, if gruff, before his accident, and as a mean and miserable bastard after, with little patience for the dwarf girl’s antics and quick to reach for his switch. Now he is blind and near bedridden, his savings squandered over dice and ale, and totally reliant on Mogan for food and care. He flashes in and out of clarity, sometimes reliving his glory days in waking dreams, otherwise sunk in depression. He owns a run down one room plaster and stone hovel in the Old Town.
