Physical Appearance: Rhystlin appears to be in early adulthood, standing an unremarkable 5"4 with the lithe build, delicate facial features, and pointed ears characterized by her light-born elven ancestors. Although the light complexion dominant in Medonian elves tends to shine through, she has managed to acquire a subtle tan from days spent outdoors. Dark brown hair falls to the small of her back and transitions into gentle waves towards the bottom, while her almond eyes are a lighter shade of a similar color. As of spring Era XXII, she sports a tattoo of a dragonlich curled around her upper right arm, which has been damaged by a series of scars that look like a strange form of arcanic writing.



Personality: Rhystlin is undoubtedly a soldier by nature, a woman of action who isn't afraid to get her hands dirty when necessary. She prefers life in the trenches, working alongside the folk who can appreciate the blessings in simpler things. She finds camaraderie in the rugged and hard-nosed manner of her fellow mercenaries, a comfort in their gruff and unashamed perspective on life.

Rhystlin's own time as a mercenary has calmed her childish spirit, adding a rather blunt and straightforward edge to the way she approaches issues. Although regaled with, and enthralled by, the stories of her parents' adventures, Rhystlin was swiftly exposed to the reality of a warrior's place in the world, as well as the burdens that are thus placed on the shoulders of those with the power to make a difference. This has left her hardened but more practical in things, more appreciative of life in general no matter how simplistic.

Despite all of this Rhystlin remains an idealist at heart, hoping that her efforts - and those of the people she brings under her wings - will one day have the reach to improve the lives of those who need it. Additionally she has not lost her taste for adventure, and still believes there is some to be found in the midst of all the rest.




 Notable Conditions, Status Effects, etc.

Due to increased exposure to natchkatze pheromones, Rhystlin suffers from exacerbated nightmares for the duration of the "Nightmare Rises" event. As a result of this, Rhystlin has developed a temporary fear of canines. [I Am Not Afraid]

Touching the Almarian artifact with her right hand has resulted in scars littering that arm in the shape of unreadable arcanic writing. Upon making contact with someone or something using that arm, the scars may randomly shape themselves to reveal a secret about them. Rhystlin has the voluntary ability to then read these scars if she wishes, but this is not a painless process. [A Return to the City of Gleaming Light]

After being exposed to a short burst of gas emitted from an organic Xetan construct, Rhystlin puts off faint, non-odorous pheromones that make the people around her more likely to cooperate with and listen to her. [To Riparia or Bust]
 




Rhystlin's mother Almaria was an elven mage and archaeologist who often freelanced for private parties and universities alike, a woman who loved adventure as much as she loved her books. She was part of a research team hired to undertake a particularly long and dangerous venture for a wealthy individual, and in order to protect the investment, a company of sellswords was hired as well. Among this company included Araben D'Arnalda and Myach Farsteel, two men who had been friends since their youth. During the time the three of them had together, both men fell in love with the quirky and beautiful Almaria, eventually culminating in a fiery romance between her and the more outgoing, charming Araben. Almaria joined the sellsword company to offer her skills and find more adventure, but after several years departed with Araben to offer services as a team of two untied to the rules of their prior employer. Myach lost ties with his lifelong friend and the woman he loved when the two decided to break away.

Upon learning of her pregnancy, Almaria was consumed with dreams of a family nestled in a beautiful city, and Araben in his adoration could only oblige. But a few years after Rhystlin's birth, Almaria took ill and died, leaving the man distraught and now deprived of the one thing that could hope to tie him to a single place. On a stormy afternoon Myach was approached by Araben with a child's hand in his own, his expression haunted and fatigued.

In his own devastation from the loss and the love that still remained in his heart, it was not difficult for Myach to accept Rhystlin as his ward. Having always been the more grounded and dependable of the two men, it was also not difficult for him to decide to settle down in one place to care for the child. Myach took Rhystlin to the place of his birth, Nexus Prime, and took up a humble residence there where he worked basic jobs and fought to ensure she received an education. He taught her the language of both her mother and father, and raised her on the stories of their adventures. Throughout the years her father made sporadic appearances, but the relationship between father and child would never be any more than the connection of fond strangers, her idea of him no more than a storyteller and gift-giver whose whims were as fleeting as the winds.

As Rhystlin grew older, Myach found the time to give in to Rhystlin's sense of adventure, travelling with her to varying cities around the Empire and teaching her how to use a short sword he gifted her on one of her birth-brightenings. They also spent time in the surrounding wilderness, including outskirts of Iceheart Forest, so that Myach could teach her skills he had often employed as a hunter in his youth - tracking, wilderness survival, and basic knowledge of herbs and plants. All the while, in his wry wit and gruff charm, stern glares of concern and relentless hard work, Myach became not only a mentor to Rhystlin, but a man she would see as the only family she had ever had.

As she grew old enough, Rhystlin proved to be headstrong but hard-working and passionately driven, and took up whatever jobs - however dirty or thankless - that she possibly could to collect and to help her adoptive parent. Myach found a deep sense of pride and admiration in the woman she had become, and in fact could see quite a bit of his younger self in her... which was why, despite reservations about her expressing interest in becoming a sellsword like him and her parents before her, Myach knew he could not hold onto his ward forever.

Rhystlin began preparing to strike out on her own as a young adult. She resolved to study sorcery (the branch of arcana her mother had been said to practice) at the famed Rainbow Towers, but overcome with an uncharacteristic sense of self-doubt, the half elf balked and left the Towers before enrolling. Little did she know, the time of her departure from the Rainbow Towers would initiate a chance encounter with one Faust Kitrye'veresi, High Lord of Har'oloth, who was visiting Nexus Prime on business. The Vysstichi lord, seemingly impressed with Rhystlin's goals - or at least her eagerness to pursue them - became a mentor of sorts, unbinding her to the force essence of the material plane and teaching her the basics of sorcery [1]. The encounter would prove to change Rhys's life forever, as shortly after their training the lord conscripted her as a mercenary in service of House Kitrye'veresi, tasking her with finding others who may be interested in joining Faust's expansion in the empire.

Rhystlin's travels earned her many friends and allies in cities like Sancta Nova, Demios, and Aelyria Prime. Along the way she also took a variety of mercenary jobs in order to supplement her income and to assist her new acquaintances, one of which involved discovering the state of Riparia for Governor Tiyribi Andares. By late spring Rhystlin had returned to Nexus Prime, determined to finally solidify her plans for her mercenary company. Under orders by Faust, she gathered a group of past acquaintances from her travels who were interested in joining her organization, and set about securing the destroyed farming town called Mileswick just outside of Nexus Prime. Once cleaned and rebuilt, this town would later serve as a base of operations for her mercenary group's work in Arium. [To be continued]

Nearing the end of the season, Rhystlin was a part of a mercenary caravan sent out by the Rainbow Towers to determine the state of Mystique, not knowing just how life-changing of a decision the job would turn out to be. Upon arriving, the surviving group discovered that the city was locked in a volatile state of time and reality. In the attempt to get to the bottom of what had caused such a chaotic situation, the half elf learned that at the heart of everything was an artifact her parents had helped to discover many eras beforehand. This artifact, it was said, changed the people who interacted with it, leading Rhys to believe that it might have somehow altered her father's state of mind and produced the illness that killed her mother. In a moment of impulse and emotion, she opened the lead box the artifact was locked inside of, hoping to destroy it - but instead, unleashed something far beyond her comprehension [2]. Within the box was a page that tore reality asunder and burned arcanic scars into her arm, plunging her and her companions into a Labyrinth where the sheer weight of knowledge almost seared holes into their minds. Although the true nature of the scars and what was truly unleashed that day are still a mystery to her, the half elf came away with a final bit of knowledge that shook her very core: the promise that her mother was, in fact, still very much alive.

[1] In When Plans Change, Rhystlin's unbinding vision is one of her mother in some sort of distress. She is in a cave, clutching the necklace that Rhystlin wears, despairing over the fact that her daughter will never know her. Whether this vision is a product of Rhystlin's subconscious fears or something more is unclear.

[2] In A Return to the City of Gleaming Light, Rhystlin, Martellus, Straylor, and Mortimer decide to stop a ritual that attempted to lock Mystique in time and bring it back to the way it was before the Xet Invasion. As a result, a breach was created from which rephaite beasts and "guardians of the breach" came forth, their nature or intentions unknown. They refer to the four as "Mother" and "Father"s, but the implications of their presence are yet to be discovered. What her emotional and rash decision might have brought upon the world is something that causes Rhystlin a great deal of shame, and as a result she has shared these events with an incredible few.

In A Most Thoughtful Gift, Rhystlin shares a story with Hay'aan about a cabbit that she carved for her real father, who didn't show up the day she intended to give it to him - only one of many instances in which he had repeated this transgression. In frustration, she had hacked the carving to pieces with a shortsword Myach had gifted her, declaring that she wished he had been her father instead. After hearing this story, Hay'aan assisted Rhystlin in carving a cabbit for Myach instead, a gift that symbolized Rhystlin's acceptance of Myach as her "real" father from that point on. Threads that take place after this often refer to Myach as her father, rather than her "adopted father".

In Rhystlin's relative youth, she entered into a romance with a childhood friend who later joined the city guard. A common ritual for him was to retrieve something they called "snowbells", or clarabells, every era before the winter season had ended, as they were the first flowers to begin to grow for spring, often even peaking through the snow. Because of this, the flowers are a nostalgic favorite of hers, and are a recurring theme in several threads (ex The Darkenings are Getting Colder, Grand Opening, A Family Reunion)

Custom Spells & Combat Styles

 



Bladed Weapons
Rhystlin utilizes a balletic fighting style focused on reflexive counterattacks, swift footwork, and agile maneuvering around the battlefield. Its goal is to avoid heavy blows and to target weaknesses. It is also meant to maximize sorcery's maneuverability and destructive force, allowing the combatant to manipulate an opponent's positioning - and then to take advantage of it with close-quarters burst damage. The style functions well with both single and ambidextrous weapon use; Rhystlin will sometimes couple the short sword in her main hand with a sword-breaker dagger for parrying, trapping, or disarming of enemy blades. Other times she may leave the off-hand available for use with grappling techniques, or for focusing on spells such as the energy shield or force bolt. The combatant is like a dancer, ever fluid and often in motion.

Note: Skill not high enough to live up to the description, but these are my goals for when she reaches this point.
Rhystlin's fighting style is a balletic form of zinn'ka, focused on quick counterattacks in critical areas and evading heavier blows. Like its bladed weapon counterpart, its user is often in motion, agile and dance-like in their attempt to maintain unpredictability and manipulate opponent positioning. It attempts to best utilize speed and agility and is designed to tie in well with combative sorcery.


Sorcery
A style of arcana practice meant to shine in the thick of battle. It has many purposes, including: maneuverability through teleports; allowing the practitioner to get in close using deflect and barrier spells; the utilization of heavy burst damage especially in close quarters; and as an accessory to single-handed bladed combat with the use of off-hand shields. Spells work towards a goal of manipulating, confusing, and impeding opponents, the purpose being to place the combatant in the most advantageous position possible - or to force the opponent into the opposite. This allows the combatant to anticipate and take advantage of the opponent's situation on the battlefield.

Example spells used for this purpose include enemy stuns, teleports for positioning and evasion, short-range opponent summons, shields for avoiding physical damage, projectile deflection, close-range force bolts, and telekineses for manipulating enemy footing, clothing, or weapons. The focus is on using mainly lower-level skills to maintain longevity of mana/vis during combat, and to avoid overtaxing the combatant's concentration.

A survivor by nature, Vincent speaks more out of necessity than for pleasure. He operates on a job-by-job basis, shifting from one to another based on the amount of coin it produces. As such, his relationship with Rhystlin is a feeling-out process, one that (for now) relies heavily on the half elf's success and stability.

Brief Description: Redheaded woman, middle-aged, with gray in her hair. Scars on her face from combat. She fought with the legion for a while before leaving to fight for hire alongside her nephew Trey, to keep an eye on him. She has a wry sense of humor that often confronts the obvious without shying away from it, trying to make it funny rather than hurtful. She's a little slower than she used to be but solid in a fight.
