If there was a better way to go then it would find me
I can't help it, the road just rolls out behind me
Be kind to me or treat me mean
I'll make the most of it, I'm an extraordinary machine
~ Fiona Apple "Extraordinary Machine"
Name: Gitana Chumomisto
Age: 16 ordinances
Birth-Brightening: 4th of Immanis
Spoken Languages: Aire (First Language); Common (Heavily Accented)
Written Languages: Aire; Very little Common
Physical Appearance:
At sixteen ordinations, Gitana is wedged between the time of being a woman and a girl. Reaching five feet three inches in height, Gitana is of average height and notably curvy, the talvia wrapped around her waist emphasizing her waist and lending curve to her hips and chest. She still maintains a gawkiness to her that adds a little bit of clumsiness, small scarring here and there on her fingers and palms evidence enough of a tumbles and rough-living. She has thick black hair worn past her shoulders in loose waves and a deep, olive complexion. Her eyes are a dusky blue, set above a slightly upturned nose and dark pink lips. She has a tattoo of a blackbird in flight above a fluff of cloud on the inside of her left wrist, the cloud to attempt to tie her closer to her Air element, the blackbird to give her guidance and illumination in the matter.
Gitana favors vibrant blues and greens with the occasional splash of yellow in her flashy skirts and wears a pair of brown riding boots typical of her people. A blue shirt drapes around her upper-body, tucked into the waistline of her skirts, and a green, yellow-stitched talvia wraps around her waist, the barbed ends tinkling with her movements. A necklace with three gold crowns dangles around her neck.
Elements:
Air - Gitana is something of a puzzle when it comes to her Air element. While the midwife declared the young woman strongly tied to Air, with a foot in Fire, Tana seems to lack the luck and common sense that goes along with the element. Always are others remarking on Tana's ability to find herself into a spot of trouble due to her own carelessness. At the same time, however, she is content enough to move along in life without a care of the troubles that plague her. Perhaps she merely has yet to grow out of her awkward adolescence and into the full bloom of her element.
Fire - It is without a doubt that Gitana has her ties to Fire. With a propensity for exaggeration, she is a boisterous young woman with a fair sense of humor that easily enough makes friends. Opinionated, Tana doesn't mind sticking her nose into a conversation that should otherwise exclude herself.
History:
To hear her father tell it, the life of Gitana's mother Nicolesza was something a mystical one fraught with the dangers of the
gaje and the guidance of Aireriel when her mother finally found the true path of life that brought Nicole back to her people.
"For she was mislead by the gaje
, tricked into betraying herself and her roots. But you see how strong our ways are, 'Tana? She returned to her people. Not even the lies of the gaje
could keep your daj
from knowing what is right." She wondered, always, if it was as he said, but who was she to second guess when her mother simply smiled or laughed, depending on how he ended the story.
Truth or not, Gitana has always felt a small reserve of envy at her mother's story-worthy life. Although proud of her roots, of the Air'riela, 'Tana finds restriction in the systematic lifestyle, the constant traveling and daily chores that seem to plague her. She makes little secret of her tedium, often finding little ways to express herself, thinking little of the consequences her actions or words might bring.
"Would you rather be a gaje
? Rooted to one place and seeing nothing but the leaves on the trees change with the seasons?" She has heard this often and from many, but 'Tana knows she is proud of who and what she is, a woman of the Air'riela...or would be, if they acknowledged her as a woman grown.
Regardless of her follies, the familiya became concerned when Gitana, claimed strongly by Air at birth, showed little indication of embodying the architypes of her element. She is constantly plagued by long strings of bad luck and while charming in her way, she has long seemed to latch onto the smaller ties of Fire that the midwife claimed dwelt also within 'Tana.
"I would not call her forward as a kris witness should a life depend on it." Gitana remembers that casual dismissal as one remembers the bite of a snake. In some effort to strengthen the bond with her element, 'Tana agreed to a tattooing of a cloud beneath a blackbird in flight on the inside of her left wrist. It seems to have helped little.
'Tana has had an easy life in comparison to most. Though others might not find her lifestyle comfortable or practical, she has grown with a loving parents and two siblings, a brother Jehan, older by an era, and a sister Everilda, younger by two. While looked on as something of an oddity amongst her people, they shelter her with Everilda harboring minor resentments towards her older sister's strangeness. Of the four, it is her father Emiliano that 'Tana turns to for guidance and support.
Feeling something of the outsider among her people, 'Tana looks towards the future, not at all certain that the rhythmic ways of her people are meant to always be for her.
Quirks/Little "Talents":- Gitana has a good singing voice, but it is of the lighter, sweet variety, soft and lilting...a little airy. Not generally suitable for projecting herself over music and other such noises, like a crowd. Her voice is better suited for lullabies.
- Shows promise as a dancer. Not a great dancer, but a decent dancer.
- Has a flare for telling a good story - so long as she's heard it before. She's not the greatest at making up tales of her own.
- Took up the viola to satisfy her Gran-Daj and has no great love for the instrument or the music it produces, but she plays it because it is something she can do passingly well...something they can't demean.
