It was a dark looming chapter in Ci'arans' life. Storm struck rocks held firm against spewing, neverending waves as he looked onwards into the Horizon. His eyes lost at the endless seas, and rocking seasprays, forever gazing for a ship that would never come.
He had made a decision and it was bittersweet how it had come to this.
"Ci'aran." Cornelius gently tugged him on the shoulder, temporarily waking him from his daylike trance. "You have been here at the coast for nearly fourteen months now, and every dawn and dusk, you always spend them gazing at the sea. Why?"
"I have my reasons Cornelius. They're personal."
"Hey." Cornelius frowned, slightly offended, "We go back a long way friend, studied the same Schola from the same school, and when times got tough, I always looked out for you. Hell, I brought you here didn't I? For fifteen years I let you tag along when you asked. Watching after you when you got sick, gave you a job amongst our merchant vendors. That should grant me some understanding..."
Ci'aran said nothing in reply.
Cornelius sighed and then turned around, "Fine. I'm worried about you thats all."
Just as Cornelius began walking away, the half-elf placed a hand on his shoulder stopping him. "I'm sorry Cornelius," he said, his lips tightly pursed, "The day I met you in school, was the most fortunate day of my life..."
Ci'aran pulled out an overly creased letter and what appeared to be a deed from his pocket. Gently unfolding its rough and slightly torn edges, he handed it over to Cornelius and allowed him to read.
Cornelius, rather surprised by this recent turn of events accepted the items with great care and with slight hesitation began reading.
The letter was beautifully written against the tan parchment. Black cursive letters laid immaculately in tiny rows that expanded with perfect spacing. With the exquisite flowing calligraphy it was obvious to determine that writer was, through either heritage or culture, elvish, and although it was written in common, the tongue and grace of the speech was nevertheless beautiful and eloquent.
----------------------------------------
"My dearest Ci'aran,
I remember holding you in my arms. Your head so full of the most beautiful brown hair I have ever seen and your eyes deep and watchful. Even from the first day of infancy you showed so much wisdom in your gaze, and you never cried. Not once. You are so brave, my Johann.
If you are reading this, then I have not returned home and the darkest of my fears are confirmed. My son, I do not know my future and I do not know your future. But a mother's duty is to her children, and for me not to be there while you grew to a child, to an adolescent, and finally to an adult is one of the greatest marks of shame I can bear.
I ask you to forgive me. Forgive me for not staying. I was forced from you due to a sickness that no human hand could cure. They sent me to a village on an island, dwarfed and surrounded by the wild Eunesian Seas. I swore to your father, as I swear to you now, my dearest Johann, the only things that can keep me from returning is death and illness. So, if you're reading this now Ci'aran, you know what keeps me.
I think of you everyday. You are the first thing I see in the morning, and the last thing I see at night. To not know how you've grown or to see how beautiful and handsome you must have become is a pain I cannot describe.
But all is not lost, my dearest Johann, if I do not come, one will come in my place. Look to the horizon, as often as you can, and look for a ship with red and gold sails. Someone will come to deliver the truth about how I lived, and how much I missed you and your father.
As your inheritance, per elvish law, I have left you my childhood home in Mystique. Your father will give it to you, along with this letter. It is fairly broken down, and is devoid of all furniture and items. It serves only as a home for you should you ever need it. Should you decide to sell it and move on to another country or city, you have my deepest blessings.
I live knowing that even In the darkest shadows of despair, even the smallest glimmer of light is hope.
I live to embrace you in my arms once more. My son.
Love you for all eternity and beyond.
Your mother,
Aylelle D'Astaryn"
---------------------------------------
Cornelius folded the letter carefully and handed it back to Ci'aran, along with the deed. "Wow... I'm sorry... I never thought you knew your mother. Your father always told us that she left early and that she wasn't a part of your life. I always thought that your step-mother was a kind person and she filled that void."
Ci'aran looked at the letter. "No one can fill the embrace of a mother, Cornelius. No matter how hard one tries." He folded the letter gently and held it in his hand, unsure of how to proceed, "And its a torture... Of my entire family, no one else shares my mother's blood. My brother Straylor, or whoever else his vagaran mother pumped out of her womb. They were all born to Thelma Thaddean, and although I feign ignorance about my real mother for the sake of my father, I have not forgotten her. I still see her in my memories and my dreams. Its why I left at 13, at my cultures turning of age."
Cornelius nodded, "So what will you do now then? Ci'aran? Wait forever for that ship of Red and Gold sails?"
To his surprise, Ci'aran shook his head, "No, Cornelius. My mother gave her life to cure her illness, she would not have wanted me to sit here and waste my time idly waiting for a ship to come. I must live my life in the fullest, both for the sake of myself, as well as for the sake of my mother."
"So how will she find you, if she returns? How will her messenger find you?"
Ci'aran looked at Cornelius with a sincere eye, "This coast is your home, Cornelius. Your business is here, your merchant and vendors come to this port and coast everyday." He placed the letter firmly in Cornelius' hands, "You must watch for me. If that ship ever comes, and a message is delivered or my mother arrives. You must tell her to wait and to send notice for me. I will come on the hooves of the fastest horse."
Cornelius stared at Ci'aran, jawdropped, "Are you joking? Granted that I will never leave here, this is your responsibility to her as her son. You cannot expect me to sit here either, actively looking for a ship with red sails."
"I know I am asking for a great favor. Perhaps it is too much for our friendship. But I cannot stay here Cornelius, every memory here, every action I commit just reminds me of my mother and although it is a comforting sadness, it is a prison that I must escape if I am to have any future of my own. Can you not help me?"
Cornelius thought for a long moment, and with a heavy sigh accepted the letter. "Very well, Ci'aran. Very well. Where are you going, so I know where to find you, should the time come?"
Ci'aran smiled a sad smile, "I'm going to the one place where I think the least of my mother. Away from the sun and the warm summers. Away from butterflies and warm meadows of grass and flowers."
Cornelius stood there, staring at him.
"I'm going to the Everwinter city of Jaedaxia, Cornelius. I will start my new life there."
"Alright mate, we're going to miss you here."
Ci'aran turned to leave, and only then did Cornelius notice that he was already packed to leave, his sack stuffed with rations and the dagger exposed in his belt.
"You are already leaving? Right now? You can't wait a week?"
"I couldn't wait a second more, Cornelius. To be honest, if you hadn't approached me, I would've approached you. This... is far too important for me."
Cornelius sighed and nodded, stepping forward, the two men embraced and Ci'aran stepped back, smiling at Cornelius as he turned and headed down the path.
"One more thing, Cornelius. Until I meet my mother, my last name is no longer Leonard. To change my life, I must first change my name."
Cornelius nodded, "Then what will your last name be?"
Ci'aran paused midstride and turned to yell it out.
"D'Astaryn"
