The Great Centripax Basin
The Man-Made Wonder
A large, man-made marvel, the Great Centripax Basin rested to the southwest of the Heartlands directly alongside the border that separated the Lauryl Province from Centripax. Once an empty chasm entrenched in badlands, the Basin had made trade nearly impossible for the two provinces, a problem readily solved by one Socrates de Ambergois. Enlisting the aid of powerful figures within the empire, Socrates enabled the construction of two dams, one to the north and one to the south of the chasm, while a man-made tributary was carved away from the River Lylles to feed water into the gorge. The result was the Great Basin that had washed over the badlands and opened ferryboats to tow trade back and forth between the provinces.
Settlements had sprung up along the basin’s shores, but there were only few of some interest to any who might find their way to the lake. There were two ports in use, one on either side of the lake. Both were known respectively as East Shore and West Harbor, small towns that housed several merchants and craftsmen with their families for these were who prospered most from the intake of goods coming off the docks.
Smaller villages that saw regular travel were those stationed at the dams situated at the north or south points of the basin. These had originated when individuals had been given the task of protecting and seeing to repairs of the dams, an important task should the basin remain in its current glory. North Basin village oversaw the dam that guided water from the River Socrates de Ambergois into the former gorge while the southern village of Anna Town maintained the dam that guided the flow of water into the River Anna.
Not all of the Great Centripax Basin had been settled, however, and there was still much in the way of wilderness for those who would prefer to wander the wilds than stop by one of the small towns. The wilds here were young and tame compared to the greater wilderness of the Dolwoods and the Great Mountain tip, mostly because what now grew along the shores of the lake were the fresh shoots and shrubs that prospered with the flow of nearby water. So while these growths were new, wildlife provided plenty of excitement and danger to those who traverse the rim of the Great Centripax Basin.
Notable Towns and Villages around the Great Basin:
The following towns and villages are all small with no fortifications and only a select few locals who have been organized into some semblance of law and order. Most of the buildings in these locations would be made of wood, would be only one story tall (with the rare exception of two stories), and the roads would not be paved, but dirt. Each has a set of docks along the harbor, Anna Town and North Basin having the smaller docks with a smaller amount of traffic trickling in.- North Basin: A small village with a population of 1,500 originally settled with the purpose of overseeing the northern dam, ensuring that the structure remains well-maintained and functionable. The population is largely human (60%)with a small number of cethers (15%) and other races (25%). There are very few elves.
- Bogey's Tavern: Owned by Bogey Gorral, a thick-waisted cether who spends most of the evenings wandering the tavern visiting with guests.
- Anna Town: A village with a population of 3,000 originally settled with the purpose of overseeing the southern dam, ensuring that the structure remains well-maintained and functionable. Trade also comes through Anna Town to make its way south to the Provice of Enamoria. The population is largely human (65%) with a small number of halflings (20%) and other races (15%). There are very few elves.
- South Bank Tavern and inn: Run by Cerrra Sa'eprrl, a slight but tall Cheetari female who tends to be a little gruff with strangers.
- East Shore: A small but prospering town settled along the north-eastern bank where most of the trade coming from the Lauryllian province enters via ferry. The population presently stands at 9,000. The population is largely human (55%), with a very small smattering of Medonian elves (10%), cethers (15%), and other races (20%).
- Smooth Waters Tavern and Inn: Run by Lazy Laurel, a white-haired old woman who tends to run the place from a chair by the fireplace.
- Caertal's Boats and Repairs: Run by human Caertal Sailfair, a tall man with dark hair, a squint and a tendency to be gassy.
- Sorrel the Wainwright: Sorrel Torat is a shapely human female with a none too attractive face. She has a loud laugh and a course voice.
- The Black Hammer Smithy: Operated by Saleta the Gimp, a large-muscled aging man with a left leg shorter than the right.
- West Harbor: A small town settled beside the Lauryllian border and along the western shore where most of the trade coming from the Centripaxian province enters via ferry. The population present stands at 8,500. The population is largely human (60%, mostly kemite), with a very small number of Medonian elves (5%), cethers (10%), and other races (25%).
- The Blue Heron Tavern and Inn: Run by Kurashi Altaeri, a kind male kemite with a honorable state of mind.
- Wicked Wagon Wheels: Run by Ssa'ekkass Ssaetarr, a golden brown scaled lizardman with a mind for business.
- Smooth Sailing Lake Boats and Repairs: Run by Casumi Lsalrie, a kemite female with an enchanted view of the basin.
