City Bones: Herozzal

History of Herozzal
Herozzal was formed by a group of Vysstichi who had parted from those of Hon'elgg. It happened like most things in powerful groups happened - two people opposed each other, one person wanted total control - and the other was not about to let this happen. Clashing of titans is always messy but it is even messier when the clashing is between two women....powerful women with armies to boot. Luckily, one of the two knew better than to declare all-out war, instead she gathered as many of her people as she could and they broke away from Hon'elgg, they struck out on their own.

Years of traveling and tunneling brought them finally beneath the area known as Centripax. Though they had dug their way into Centripax, once they reached the province they found a series of tunnels and caverns that ran throughout the province. The origins were uncertain; some appeared to be ancient lava tubes, while others were so smooth that they must have been carved by the hands of some ancient civilization. Avoiding the area that made up Dargis, the night dwarf city, they followed these often gem-studded tunnels to a great tri-leveled, gem-encrusted cavern. This cavern was perfect, suitable to be carved into a grand city - it was formed of almost solid rock and not soil, as if the Gods had placed this massive boulder under the ground for them to shape and mold how they saw fit. That's exactly what they did, and hundreds of years later the rock cavern became known to Vysstichi everywhere as the dark elf city - Herozzal.

It wasn’t long till they struck out towards the surface in order to expand their borders. They established a city on the surface known as Sylannen, protected from the painful brightenings by a light-absorbing shield over the city. They were removed from this surface base by Carmelya decades ago and have been attempting to retake it ever since.

Population and Racial Percentages
Inhabitants: 6000+
80% Vysstichi
10% Human Slaves
7% Non-Human Slaves
3% Others

Imports and Exports
Herozzal is a trade/bartering economy that has limited contact with non-vysstichi surface worlders, and generally don’t venture into town. Bank Notes will generally not be accepted as currency, though gold and other products will. Gems have less value in Herozzal due to the high number of gems that occur within the caverns themselves; diamonds are however very rare, and are worth more in Herozzal than elsewhere. Slaves used as one of the most common forms of currency. Most trade with non-vysstichi occurs around the arc, and most trade with vysstichi from other cities occurs within the city itself.

Imports: Goods, slaves, meat, fruit/vegetables, grains, wood, fabrics
Exports: Gems, ore, rocks, slaves, mushrooms, poisons/potions, services

Government Structure
Herozzal is run by the Council of Ten; that is, the matrons of the ten most powerful houses are in charge. The Houses are arranged on a ranking system dictated by the ten, and the most powerful house is Chair over the others. Each era a meeting is called to adjust the power scale; the chair makes final decisions in all cases unless there is a competitor for their title in which case the rest of the council vote on it. Houses are allowed a representative to this council to convince them that they have ascended (or remained constant, should it have been a bad era) in their power, and they will either be promoted, demoted or remain depending on their status and their status with the First House. There is a list in the main chamber that dictates the current standings of the Houses.

House members are punished by their matrons. Matrons are punished by the Council. Non-house members are punished by whoever seems fit to do so. The laws tend to change from house to house and whoever is dictating them, but there are a few laws that hold constant throughout Herozzal: men are inferior to women, non-vysstichi are inferior to vysstichi, and there is no such thing as fair play in inter-house wars.

Social Structure
Upper Class
The Council of Ten is the highest rank one can achieve, but anyone who is a matron over servants is considered part of the ruling upper class. Matron’s family members are also considered upper class, and extremely wealthy merchants are as well.

Lower Class
These are the normal civilians of Herozzal. Like with most Vysstichi, they also love to rank themselves and compare their powers. Those who have any kind of training are normally ranked higher than others, even along the lower classes. Be it Necromancy, Priestess, Weapons - any training basically. Those who have servants - willing Vysstichi - serving under them are a rung up from the bottom as well. If a person should own slaves, even if they are not part of a house, have no training and no servants - they are considered higher than others too as slaves are hard to come by and worth much. No matter what accomplishments and possessions, male Vysstichi are always considered lower class. Even when they are owned by high class Matrons, they are still no more than servants and belongings, though they are given more respect and graciousness than slaves. Any who can claim membership to a house but not blood ties is a member of the lower class.

No Class
Slaves. No rights, no privileges, nothing. Scum of the earth in Herozzal. The only thing they have going for them is their value, so at times they are handled well and prized but all of them know their place. Once they have been tainted, corrupted, over-used, ill, etc... they are sold/traded or worked into the ground for a poor and sickly slave is worth nothing.

Other
Some races have gained a note of trust from the Vysstichi, they are not normally allowed within the city to loiter and roam but they have been given permission to seek shelter and a safe haven in certain smaller caverns marked off for them. These races are not respected as much as a mutual alliance has been formed for the greater goal.
  • Mae'Raul Compound
A company of dracons who live in a sizable cavern not far from Herozzal, beneath the safety of the earth. They have an alliance with the dark elves, for the payment of the sanctuary they do random favors and deeds for the Vysstichi.

    Fra'gul Rock
Another offset cavern where a band of orcs have set up camp. At first they had come to uproot the Vysstichi from their city and take over, but once defeated they surrendered and agreed to the alliance terms laid out before them. They aren't allowed in the city at all without supervision and they are only called upon for the dirty work.

Factions/Houses/Powers in Herozzal

The city of Herozzal is run by the council of ten: the 10 most powerful Matrons of the 10 most powerful houses. But these are not the only powers in Herozzal, for there are other factions and guilds within the city, each warring for their own piece of territory and own iota of power. Here is a break down of all the important groups of power within Herozzal.

-------------
House Eowaeder, 1st House of Herozzal
I. General Information
Run by an aging archmage, head of the council of Herozzal, House Eowaeder has reached nearly the limit of power in Herozzal.
II. NPCs
- Eiliasa Eowaeder (Vysstichi, Matron, Archmage Necromancer)
- Telena Eowaeder (Vysstichi, Daughter of Matron)
- Hiite Eowaeder (Vysstichi, Daughter of Matron)
- Uyn-tual Eowaeder (Matron’s Cousin, Priestess of Jalat)
III. Locations
IV. Important Threads
- The Result of Boredom in Herozzal – Playful Vysstichi
V. Other

House Melervs, 2nd House of Herozzal
I. General Information
Run by a vicious woman with a vicious family, House Melervs is home to some of the most successful social climbers in Herozzal. In addition, unlike most houses, the one next in line for succession is not a daughter but in fact a grandaughter, pointing to the high fertility of the Melervs household. The Matron Alaere is an archmage in mysticism.
II. NPCs
- Alaere Melervs (Vysstichi, Matron, Archmage Mystic)
- Damarys Melervs (Vysstichi, Matron's Youngest Daughter, PC)
- Tua Melervs (Vysstichi, Matron’s Daughter)
- Lescri Melervs (Vysstichi, Matron's Younger Sister)
- Ulioze Melervs (Vysstichi, Matron’s Grandaughter, Apprentice Mystic)
- Ilha Melervs (Vysstichi, Matron’s Eldest Daughter)
- Kazle (Vysstichi, Master in Short Swords, Unrelated to House)
III. Locations
- House Melervs
IV. Important Threads
- The New Slave of House Melervs
V. Other
Currently there is much strife between members of the house in relation to a successor, for while Ulioze is the obvious choice, Alaere has not yet made her decision.

House Tekin’afi, 3rd House of Herozzal
I. General Information
Tekin’afi is run by Matron Jhuliel, a master necromancer. The two daughters are Jhuliel and Irae, the first of which is eldest and favored, the second of which is not. It is the 3rd House of Herozzal, brought there from 8th by the Matron herself.
II. NPCs

House Yelkith, 4th House of Herozzal
I. General Information
Matron Alaret is unusually pudgy and unusually fertile for a vysstichi woman, and has many unnamed children, most of whom turn out to be female. At 307 years and such an unusually high level of fertility, she has more than enough heirs to repopulate Herozzal. It is rumored that some of her eldest daughters are planning to split from Yelkith and start their own house, though nothing more solid than rumors has confirmed this.
II. NPCs
- Alaret Yelkith (Vysstichi, Matron, Master Necromancer)
- Ver’nya Yelkith (Vysstichi, Matron’s Daughter, Master Necromancer, PC)
- V’lara Yelkith (Vysstichi, Matron’s 2nd Eldest Daughter)

Yelkith Compound (Ryalla Swiftwind)
Returning the Stars
Yelkith Compound (Skorri)
SOF: Skorri
V. Other
Ver’nya Yelkith and several of her sisters were killed in the battle against Acumin. However, a demon trapped by Ver’nya made a deal with a dying light elf that transported PC Skorri into Ver’nya’s body. Skorri/Ver’nya is now working to find the necklace that binds Thomas the Demon to this plane, to fulfill his part of the bargain. As Skorri is not the normal inhabitant, he is having a great deal of trouble moving around, and does not have access to Ver’nya’s skills or most of her memories.

House Hun’viir, 5th House of Herozzal
I. General Information
Elize Hun’viir is fond of assassination, and has had many successful hits in the short number of years she’s been Matron. She assassinated her mother to take power of the house, and will happily kill anyone else who gets in her way. Her house is one of decadence and little civilization; she has been known to make slaves eat their own flesh in punisment, and wears katta fur as clothing.

- Brahkula Hun’viir (Nosfuratu, Emissary for House Hun’viir, PC)

House Godeghym, 6th House of Herozzal
I. General Information
The women of House Godeghym are aflicted with a strange malady that causes extreme paranoia and violence, the full effects of which finally consumed Matron T’auna after the death of her eldest daughter, Oltra. The return of her lost daughter Zytran’il after being rescued by Faust D’rinishad has returned some order to the house but has merely paused the descend into madness, not reversed it.
II. NPCs
- T’auna Godeghym (Vysstichi, Matron, Journeyman Necromancer)
- Zytran’il Godegyhm (Vysstichi, Matron’s Daughter, Initiate Mystic)
III. Locations
IV. Important Threads
- And Darkness Grew Wings and Then Began to Spread
- The Birth of an Army
V. Other
The reappearence of Zytran’il was orchestrated by a group known as the Poison, using newcomer PC Faust D’Rinishad in order to successfully rescue her. She was being held by Dauraun Godeghym, the old guard of the house. Faust killed him and freed her, indebting her to the Poison, whose (often surface walking) affiliates now walk the halls of her house freely.

House Nilalin, 7th House of Herozzal
I. General Information
Laroa of House Nilalin is not full vysstichi. Her eyes are green flecked with red, and this obvious sign of bad blood would have left her ridiculed or dead had it not been for her sheer strength of will and obvious power. Nilalin is overun with her undead army, effectively countering any complaints against her along with assassination attempts.
II. NPCs
- Laroa Nilalin (1/2 Vysstichi, Matron, Master Necromancer)
- Mairi Nilalin (Vysstichi, Matron’s Daughter, PC)
III. Locations
House Nilalin
IV. Important Threads

The Matron has mild Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and is also known to hire any artist that captures her notice.

House Hlaarn, 8th House of Herozzal
I. General Information
One of the few heavily Jorelite houses in Herozzal, Hlaarn is a place of somber colors and a heavy hand on punishments. Both Matron and daughter share the name Sida, and the youngest is being raised as a virtual clone of her reclusive and restrictively religious mother.
II. NPCs
- Sida Hlaarn (Vysstichi, Matron, Master Necromancer)
- Sida Hlaarn II (Vysstichi, Matron’s Daughter)
III. Locations
- House Hlaarn
IV. Important Threads

House Aronyth, 10th House of Herozzal
I. General Information
Previously the 9th house of Herozzal, Aronyth was pushed out of place by Vhilraaen and thusly bears a grudge against the 10th House. It is now run by Zora Gaozth, Master Mystic, previous right hand woman and murderer of the ex-matron Cerae.
II. NPCs
III. Locations
IV. Important Threads
V. Other
Alliance with House Hun’viir. No children.

The Poison
I. General Information
A group that purchases new slaves, trains them, and then sells them to highly ranked houses. Run by vysstichi and surface dwellers alike, and trains their slaves so well that no matter the race, people will buy them. Have a special interest in House Godeghym, and an ally in the Matron’s daughter there due to their rescue of her. Are using their slaves as spys and are slowly taking over the city. Probably about 50 non-servent members.
II. NPCs
- Zurar Kia Telurathi (Light Elf, Leader)
- Rosiva (Jaguara, Guard of Nilalin, Spy for the Poison)
III. Locations
- Lake Ty’ras
IV. Important Threads
- The Birth of an Army
V. Other

The Whisperers
I. General Information
A group of elite assassins that get their name by a ritual of injecting spider venom into their throats so they can no longer speak, in the event that they get captured by the enemy. They do it before they go on a mission, and it wears off in a cycle or so.
II. NPCs
III. Locations
IV. Important Threads
V. Other

House Baenn, Once the 6th House of Herozzal
I. General Information
Run by a more sensitive matron than most, Adilabwyn of Baenn once held a position lower than a male and had a different view of the world because of this. She was a master necromancer but was expected to become an archmage within the next few eras, and did not have any acknowledged children. Unfortunately all of this was cut rather short by her premature and mysterious death. She and most of the members of her house were found deceased in their beds, eyes and mouths locked in a permanent scream. Some believe this was a backfired spell, for the Matron was known to experiment with her art. Most believe they were all murdered.
II. NPCs
- Adilabwyn Baenn (Vysstichi, Matron, Master Necromancer, Deceased)
III. Locations
IV. Important Threads
V. Other

Cultural Notes
  • Light
As vysstichi do not need light to see their way around, torches and other forms of light
for surface dwelling races (slaves mostly) are used as a way to limit areas where these races can go. Darkened areas tend to be off limit to slaves, or are far less receptive to surface worlders, where as well-lit areas are an obvious sign that slaves and surfacers are welcome. Taverns that cater to non-vysstichi as well as vysstichi often are well lit. Many Houses use this to discourage slaves from going into private parts of the house, though as vysstichi do not see color very well without light sometimes this does not apply when there are magnificent pieces of art they wish to show off.

    Darkening – Brightening
In Herozzal it's impossible to see the suns, but it is possible to know when the brightening turns into the darkening. The upper caves of Herozzal are filled with bats, who fly out to feed as the sun goes down. There are so many of them and the tunnels are set up in such a fashion that the sound of their wings beating and their cries echo throughout the caves, informing the citizens as to the sunrise or the sunset.

    "Sun Kisser"
An insult that insinuates that the recipient is an Esh'lahier or behaves like one. Also synonymous with traitor, as the Esh'lahier were traitors against the vysstichi a long time ago. It is occasionally applied towards surface dwellers as well, but generally towards Esh’lahier.

    "Nigriv"
Virgin spelled backwards, this insult is generally used against those who are not followers of Haya. It can also be used to insinuate someone is immature and naive.

"May the shadows hold your soul."
A wishing of wellness and good luck upon someone, especially if they're leaving a house and venturing out into the city. The shadows offer protection, so hopefully they'll protect you as you venture through the city.

    Pinch of Time
Time in Herozzal is measured in pinches of incense and how long they take to burn. One pinch burns in approximately the equivalent of a half an hour.

    "To usurp the light"
An indication of good behavior (ie - going along with the hayan-worshipping society, being a necromancer, etc) and an indication of good character and that they're going to go somewhere in their life. ie: She's going to usurp the light some brightening.

”Surface Dweller, Surface Worlder, Surfacer, Top-Dweller, Lightborn”
This is a non-vysstichi who is not a slave. Yet. Unlike sun-kisser, these specifically refer to non-esh’lahier, surface dwelling folk. It is not necessarily an insult though it can be used as such when applied towards a vysstichi; it simply describes those races who live most commonly on the surface.
Non Player Characters
General Use NPCs can be used without permission, but must not be altered or used in any context that does not agree with the writeups. Restricted Use NPCs must have the permission of the moderator of Herozzal in order to be used. The creation of any restricted NPC must be approved by the moderator of Herozzal, and the addition of any NPC to the City Bones must be done by them though others may create and receive credit for it. This will act as a link map for various NPC writeups in order to make things quick and efficient, and will be updated regularly. The following is the format, simply trade the {} for [] (and note that training levels should be put under ‘other’):

Lichen is a benevolent Adventurer
Name: Jyslin Tekin’afi
Appearance: Vysstichi. The only one of the Tekin’afis to have silver hair, not white. Falls in a straight sheet to her lower back. She is extremely slender, shaped like her mother, and stands at 5’9” tall. Bright orange eyes that are slightly larger in her face than they are in her Mother’s and Sisters. Wears mostly silk dresses and robes, most of which are loosely fitted. She wears a necklace with the symbol of her house.
Personality: Jyslin is a far more private person than most vysstichi, especially most high ranking vysstichi. She does not worship publicly, preferring the privacy of their own temple at home. She is powerful, beautiful, and those men who are lucky enough to be invited to her bed often find themselves unwilling to leave. Is her mother’s favorite, and while she does not regard her mother with as much affection is turned her way, she does care for her. Jyslin does not speak much, but is very effective when she does. She ignores servants as being of no consequence less they disturb her, and seems to move throughout life in a world of her own.
History: Raised in Herozzal, she has eternally been her mother’s favorite. Her mother has been teaching her necromancy but Jyslin finds herself drawn more towards Ikos and with her mother’s blessing has been pursuing that as well.
Other: Apprentice Necromancer, Initiate Ikos. Is being taught the latter by an elf from the surface.

Personality: Passive-Aggressive to the extreme, and absolutely despises Irae and would do anything to take her down.
History: Was born a commoner and now works for House Tekin’afi. Irae decided to use her husband and often, so now Zarra absolutely despises her. Used to work as a laundry maid, now is the personal servant of Irae.

Lichen is a benevolent Adventurer
Name: Olmareth
Appearance: 5’9” tall vysstichi male, with short white hair and dark red eyes. More slender than most vysstichi men, and very wiry. Has two small white snakes tattooed on his neck, the symbol of the House he belongs to (Tekin’afi).
Personality: Somewhat subordinate when it comes to his wife, as he will occasionally speak up for her. This generally attracts trouble, and so when it is not concerning his wife he is extremely obedient and subordinate. Speaks freely around his wife.
History: Is intensely attracted to his wife, Zarra, but has now attracted the attention of Irae Tekin’afi who likes to hurt him in order to hurt his wife.
Other: Cares for his wife. Doesn’t love her, but likes her. Gets jealous over other men. Works as a servant for Irae.

Lichen is a benevolent Adventurer
Name: Jhuliel Tekin’afi
Appearance: Vysstichi. Jhuliel appears to be crossing the line into middle age. Crows feet around her eyes and faint creases around her mouth have begun to show her age. Her wrinkling hands show the most obvious signs of her advancing years. Bright white hair is generally pinned into impressive curls and piled on top of her head, decorated with ribbons or feathers. Her eyes are a faded orange that once glowed with her power and now are dimmed with her age. She stands at 5’10” in thin and now angular height as the womanly curves of her youth have begun to fade away. She is most often dressed in tight-fitting bodices and gowns of purple and black, generally with the twining snakes that represent her House decorating them. She has a tattoo of her house sign on her right shoulder blade.
Personality: Jhuliel is brilliant as all high ranking Matrons are, brilliant enough that she alone brought the house from 7th level to 3rd in her lifetime. She has one weakness, and that is that she loves her eldest daughter Jyslin very much. She is not overly cruel, and has won the respect not only of her peers but of her advisors and servants as well, who serve her well not because they fear her wrath over the slightest thing but because they recognize her strength and her knack for leadership. She will not shy away from violence, but nor does she revel in it as some matrons do.
History: She became Matron of her 7th level house when she was very young and ambitious and brought the house to where it is now through her own means. Jyslin’s father was son of the fourth house of Herozzal and worked in the Temple of the Damned, and while she did not love him she did respect him during their short affair. The father of Irae was an attractive slave. She was born in Herozzal and into power, and has never bothered to leave. Her training was at the hands of her mother and, once her mother passed away, her mother’s elderly teacher.
Other: She is a master level Necromancer, but does not amass hoards of the undead like others. She saves her power and uses it to create undead of higher levels rather than grunts.

Appearance: Vysstichi. Bright white hair inherited from her mother and the brilliant orange eyes of her entire family. Irae is second oldest and easily the most vicious of the Tekin’afi women. She stands at 5’7” tall and is more womanly than the rest of her family, though still slim by human standards. She generally wears very little, but when she does dress she wears pants and tops, preferring them over dresses. She also carries many knives, both visible and hidden. Her ears are pierced twice in the right and once in the left, and she wears two tiny intertwining snakes (her House symbol) in the right ear and a dangling silver skull from her right. Her hair brushes her shoulders when let down, and falls in short waves, inherited from her father. Her face is more harsh than pretty, and despite her figure she is more aggressive and masculine than her other family members.
Personality: Irae is cruel and especially likes to steal men away from other house members or from commoners. She uses this to establish her authority. She enjoys violence in and out of the bedroom, and most in the house fear her.
History: Raised in Herozzal, was trained to be a priestess in Vortex’s undercity, but decided to return here and live in wealth instead. Rumor is she was sent away because her mother was only interested in training her sister.
Other: Trained as a priestess, so knows a little of assassination. Carries many blades, most of which she has no idea as to how to use.

Lichen is a benevolent Adventurer
Name: Rosiva
Appearance: Jaguara. Wears a leather jerkin and occasionally metal greaves. Very nimble and light on feet, and walks like a predator stalking prey. Bright green eyes and long lashes. A small piercing in her left ear has a spider hanging down from it. Has a gold ring in her right nostril. 32 patterns old.
Personality: Is sarcastic, suspicious and abrasive. Refuses to let anyone get close to her, and cares little for the idea of friends or more than short term mates. Ambitious and aggressive, and has a tendency towards violence. Dislikes torture though; prefers something where the target can fight back.
History: Was sold into slavery when she was captured from the surface world at 15. She worked for a merchant for two eras as a laborer, and then was purchased by the Poison and spent 3 eras being trained as an assassin and a spy. Was sold to the eighth house as a guard, then was repurchased as a close body guard for Zytran’il of the 7th house at 31 patterns old. Now works for both Zytran’il and the Poison.
Other: 3rd level zinn’ka, 2nd level assassination.

Lichen is a benevolent Adventurer
Name: Zurar Kia Telurathi
Appearance: A silrosian elf of 120 patterns. Dark curling black hair that falls to her waist, bright blue eyes. She wears a gold coronet, though she is not royalty. Tends to dress in dark hues; dresses if she’s trying to impress someone, pants if she plans on working. Does not wear metal or weaponry of any kind. 5’8” tall, very slender.
Personality: She has a tendancy to make light comments about serious situations, but it is more to put people off than to amuse herself. Can be deadly serious when the situation calls for it, but tends to be more laughing and light when other people are around. Exceptionally intelligent, and everything she says has a purpose though she tries to come off as less devious than she truely is. Has horrible scars running across her back.
History: Zurar was a slave for 30 patterns when she was purchased by the Poison. She’d been captured as a youth and had been subjected to all sorts of horrors due to her race and her beauty. She has been working for the Poison as a mage and now, as a leader, for the past 20 patterns.
Other: Apprentice level mystic with a basic knowledge of poison and a great deal of cavern lore.
