Double Axe Whistle While You Work [Oinos]

Mid-brightening, 2nd cycle Kalendryas, Winter, Era XVI

A ways from the Ranger Hall was a small cottage belonging to one named Oinos Grapesmasher according to Pickles Derisson. The famous winemaker-to-be required the crafty services of Micky and Gunther which involved both the construction of a building to house the dwarf's property and to deliver the much needed lumber. It was towards that destination the stout dwarves moved on their lumber wagon that creaked and rattled over the uneven earth. And accompanying this noise was the tune of whistles, sounding forth from the chapped, pursed lips of the hearty workers.

At length, they stopped their wagon before the property, looking around at what the dwarf had in his possession. The scene before them was evidence that this Oinos was not a dawdler, but instead, a hard-worker that laboured just as much as the bees of the apiary. Very soon, he met the pair, and the dwarves greeted each other in the professional fashion before carrying on with the business.

"So, ye be needin' a buildin' of some sort, eh? One that shall house yer wagon, two hand carts, tools, an' tha 'orse, o'course!?" said Gunther in a thunderous voice.

Micky spoke up, "Twould be a quick job, yea. One brightenin' ye expected and ye shall not be disappointed. I'd say the buildin' shall be this large." He handed Oinos a small parchment that contained a detailed drawing of a building that was appropriately large and practical. Then he continued, "So, when yer ready, we can make our way to tha Dolwoods. Get tha lumber then get back 'ere an' start the construction."

He greeted the pair, glad that were out there, prompt and prepared. Though Dwarfs expected promptness and efficiency of each other, Oinos still appreciated it when it happened. After looking over the details that were presented, Oinos nodded in agreement and acceptance. "That ought to be enough to take care of my needs and then some. It will be good to have all these things orderly stowed, out of sight and out of the house too. You folks just go ahead and do whatever you need to do. I'll be around here if you need me."

He then went to the vineyard and checked the plants to ensure that they looked ggod and the soil around the plants was moist. He needed to keep up with these things. Spring would be here soon and the work load would increase now matter how well he prepared.

Cutting the Tree

Gunther nodded his head and slapped Micky on his back, "Alright, now, let's ge' this lumber, man!" The pair walked off and mounted their wagon. They, both stout and burly in heavy boots, rode on towards the direction of the woods where they would chop the much needed lumber. Oinos remained behind as a dedicated worker to his lands, for grapes and bees required special attention and care to ensure their successful production of their by-products.

Out in the Dolwoods, dark and mysterious, this area was known to be enchanted, both very beautiful and very dangerous. Only the bravest and the most cautious could survive, and with the respect these dwarves had for the resources the generous woods offered to maintain their way of life, they were safe based on this mutual understanding. The rapists of nature were far less fortunate.

So thus, at their location, Micky and Gunther began to survey their area. Micky worked on the fall of the tree, examining how it leaned and estimated the weight by his skilled eye. He licked his finger and held it in the air. The wind was blowing west, and as the tree was leaning towards that direction, once cut, the tree would fall in that direction. As a result, he and Gunther planned their escape route along the path forty-five degrees from the direction of the fell tree.

Gunther worked on the diameter of the tree. The one they chose was particularly large and required more than one cut. When all was done, both dwarves with axe in hand cut a notch on the side of the tree that it will fall towards, then moved toward the opposite side where they made their cuts that met the depth of the first cut, except this felling cut was two inches higher than the floor of the notch. With the hinge in place, the tree fell safely. "TIMBER!"

Oinos continued with his work, confident that the two builders would return soon enough and he would be able to watch the construction of the out-building. For now he walked through the plantation looking for what might be getting a head start on spring. He might as well take advantage of whatever opportunity presented it self.

Once that was done, he used this available time to get more firewood. Might as well let it season between now and when he would be processing the next harvest of honey. According to the Druidess, there should be a lot more work for him this time.

Limbering the Tree

The tree had fallen and it did not roll which signaled to Gunther and Micky that it was safe to begin limbing the tree. Stable and safe, the tree was ready for its limbs to be removed, however, the pair did not stand on the downhill side, albeit the terrain was quite flat, just in case it did roll. Dwarves were not known to be nimble, and even though they were built like a war horse, there was still a chance of being flattened like a pancake. They made good eating for breakfast, but not as a dwarf.

One after the other, Micky and Gunther cut off the limbs with one full swipe. There was much stored energy in this particular tree, and limbs sprung up smacking both dwarves in their rear or chest. The strikes were painful, so they thus cut each limb shorter before removing them entirely utilizing wedges.

With spring nigh on here, there was not a whole lot of fire wood needed, Oinos stopped when he felt he had enough and set to cleaning up the area where the out-building would stand. It had already been cleared thoroughly so the job was not too hard nor did it take long. Mostly it was wind blown forest debris.

He took the debris to one of piles outside his cultivated land. The pile with leaves, twigs, and small limbs was already beginning to compost. The pile with larger limbs was his primary source of fire wood. There was a third pile, really a stack that was made up of small tree trunks, culled during his initial clearing of the overgrown land. These he would use for fence posts when the need arose.

Timber Two

Gunther looked at the plans for the building. If they were to construct a building to house the horse and Oinos' property such as his wagon and carts, they needed enough lumber. Thus far they felled one tree, but according to the calculations, the timber needed to frame out the building were sized 2x4". A mathematical genius, Gunther had already found the number of trees, and thus, the lumber he needed to obtain the appropriate amount. When satisfied with the verification, he waved his hand at Micky and they proceeded to another tree.

After surveying its size and diameter as well as the escape route, they wedged the tree trunk and began chopping. The large sentinel fell. Micky cried out, "Timber!" And walked up to the felled tree which was submitted to the hacking of axes. It's limbs were removed and with the brute strength of the dwarves, the tree was moved towards the first one that was cut.

Oinos went over and checked the 11 bee hives. He inspected them top to bottom, looking for any damage. At each hive he looked to see if any bees were entering or exiting. He also put an ear to several sites at each hive. He was listening for activity. There should be some activity within the hive but what he heard was minmal movement or none at all.

Maybe the bees knew something that Oinos did not know.

To the Ol' Mill and Back

After much long hours of labor, Gunther and Micky had all the felled trees they needed. They limbed them all and they were ready to bring them to the old, dilapidated mill located near the Dolwoods. It was an old lumber mill that would soon be condemned when a new one was established. For now, it served the dwarves well enough for the time being, albeit the machinery and such were a bit rusty and not quite efficient.

To the mill they traveled, whistling while they work to the tune of an old shanty about belly-warming ale and bar wenches with delectable bums. Gunther enjoyed it so and he fell back into the pile laughing and his little, stocky legs wriggled in the air. Such a friend Micky was that he tugged Gunther by the tunic and pulled him back up. At length, they arrived at the mill, dismounted, and hauled each tree to a location where it was to be debarked. Once all the trees were debarked, the dwarves proceeded with the chopping of the wood until every tree became beautiful, sweet-smelling fresh lumber!

"Aye! We're done. Let us go now to Oinos an' start buildin' this buildin' of 'is!" said Gunther.

Micky smiled and they threw all the pieces into the wagon then rode off towards Mr. Grapesmasher's land. They would find the dwarf in his yard, and it was then they asked,

"Where do ye want this buildin'?"

Before long they returned with beautiful, sweet-smelling fresh lumber! They had what was needed, now it was a matter of constructing the building. When asked where he wanted it, Oinos pointed to cleared spot near the cottages where it would near the cottages but not too close.

"That ought to be a good enough spot. The rest I leave up to you."

Oinos sat down on the ground, his back against the cottage. He would watch the construction, yet keep out of way.

With the location of the building identified, Gunther and Micky grunted as they began to haul the timber to the right spot. They framed out the building and the roof as well. Next, they added walls, a floor, and a nice sturdy roof. By that time, it was late in the brightening and the suns were beginning to set.

When the last of the material was placed on the roof, the dwarves had completed their work all whilst they whistled. All sweaty and beet-red, they walked up to Oinos and smiled at him, proud of the work they had done. The building was sturdy and would last for many ordinations.

oocI think you can describe this building yourself, how you want it to look, etc.

There was the structure, completed in one brightening. It was everything he wanted and then some. The outbuilding was entirely wood construction. There was a wood floor which he did not expect.
he thought there would simply be a dirt floor. The roof was wood as well with lapped boards. The entrance had a swinging door, big enough for a good sized horse to enter, so it was more than ample for a Dwarf. At the far end was a simple shuttered window that could be opened for ventilation. Over to the right were two stalls for horses. Each of those had a low swinging door. Over to the left was an open space big enough for the one horse cart, hands carts and wheelbarrows. Over in one of the corners he would be able to store hay. There was plenty of space on the walls for hanging tools.

All in all, it was a sound structure that met his needs and fit right in with the appearance of the two cottages. Oinos looked at the two Dwarfs and said, "Tis even better than I expected. You do fine work."

Gunther and Micky beamed with pride and they thus bowed to him as dwarves do, and held out their hands for a handshake. When all were satisfied and the tools picked up and packed in their wagon, the pair eventually left Oinos' lands, their distant whistles still heard from where he stood.

The shed was indeed sound and sturdy and was guaranteed to serve Oinos needs for as long as he wanted.

ooc: That's a wrap! Nice rp.

After Gunther and Micky left, Oinos put all the items in the building that it was intended to hold. Wagon, carts, wheelbarrows, tools and of course, the horse. Once that was done, he looked at the structure and wondered what to call it. A barn? A stable? A Tool Shed? It seemed to be a bit of each of those things. He finally reached a decision, he would call it the Out House. He chuckled a bit over the implication but that would be it.
