A dwarf, a human…and a druid? (Mod Please).

OOC: Following on from here.

Timestamp: Optia 5, Spring, Era XV.

There were only a few things more important and sacred to a Child of Cetheron within the World of Aelyria than kin and clan. Although their maker Cetheron, The Tireless One, held a special place within the hearts and minds of his children, and the loyalty they owned to the nation of their birth held plenty of pull upon the hearts and minds of the dwarfen race, when push came to shove a dwarf would cast aside everything, even personal loyalties, all for the needs of kin and clan.

It was this strong sense of togetherness and brotherhood that made the Children of Cetheron so unique within the racial congested World of Telath. While the average individuals of most races thoughts only about themselves and how their actions would benefit them, a dwarf’s first thoughts were how their action could and would benefit their kin and clan before any personal glory. It was for this racial belief and need to protect his dwarfen kin from further harm and attack that the young laird of Clan Minith stood outside the gates of Zerdargia waiting for his human companion to arrive and for an adventure to begin.

This most unlikely of partnership was a mutual desirer by both adventurers to clear the mysterious Dolwood of an ancient, dangerous and evil present that was endangering fellow dwarfs and their livelihood; which to some dwarf’s was just as important. Although the dwarfs in question weren’t members of his own clan, for Coulter Minith an attack on one was an attack on all and as such the black-bearded dwarf was willing to risk his own life for the betterment of his race.

Therefore dressed for war with his two short-swords sheathed and belted to his wide black belt, and a metal round-shield, with the crest of Daltina upon its face, held in his left hand, Coulter Minith started to whistle watching the world pass by as he waited for his fellow adventurer to arrive.

A pair more extreme in their differences could perhaps be hard to find. To contrast the duty and loyalty of a dwarf for whom kith and kin were most important came the human who had neither clan nor kin, a man who gave loyalty to his Guild and his goddess, but to whom even so his primary loyalty was to himself. A man who came and went according to his own whims, at least on the surface.

But scratch that surface, move past the apparent indifference and likely the two had more in common than either of them might realise. For all that he might think that he made his own choices, he knew that She had a strong hand in what he did, presenting him with choices such that he would choose what She wished.

The dwarf was there before him, dressed heavily in more gear than the ranger wanted to think about carrying. For all that the human wore a form of mail, it was much lighter than the dwarfs and hid under his outer layer of clothing. Bow and long knives were his only armament, he counted more on mobility than fighting face to face, so their skills might work well together or so he considered as he closed the distance.

"Serale," he greeted the dwarf and nodded at the shield, "Daltina? I thought that you were a dwarf from here." It was perhaps an abrupt question but he got the impression that the dwarf preferred that.

There was evidently something to be said for plain specking, and it was equally apparent to both parties that they each felt the same way about using it. Therefore although the question being posed by the human archer was somewhat abrupt in nature, this was clear even to somewhat rude manned laird of Clan Minith, the four-foot tall dwarfen warrior still found himself liken his human companion more and more.

While other races, most prominently in the mind of Coulter Minith the elfin race, tried to hind and deflect their emotions from the outside world, the Children of Cetheron were legendary for wearing their emotions upon their sleeves; or within this situation upon their shields. The intense emotions and emotional memories represented in the crest of Daltina ran more deeply within the heart and memory of Coulter Minith than even the deepest vein of ore within the Motherwell. How could a simple soldier describe the feelings and emotions upon a battlefield standing beside your fellow brother warriors waiting for an enemy to attack, or the sight of a valued companion being cut down in front of you by a horde of orcish warriors. What could a simple minded warrior say that hadn’t already be sung and spoken of in legends of old?

However it apparent to the four-foot tall dwarfen warrior that his short-lived companion wasn’t trying to bring up unpleasant emotions, but was in fact just trying to learn something about his fellow adventurer before things came to a boil. Knowing and understanding this Coulter Minith, after several moments of pause to regain some control of his emotions, would reply with these sentences; spoken as always in his usual low rumbling voice.

‘Aye served sometime within its forces, the crest is there to remind mee of stupidity of officers and the bravery of soldiers…ye and aye have a long way too travel.’ With these few mysterious words said Coulter Minith would shoulder his backpack, which contain many an item, and would set off on the long road leading toward Dargis.

The day was warm, winter's chill finally giving way to the mild warmth of spring - soon summer would be upon them, but this day was mild and calm, the threat of sweltering nights long off.

The road was quiet about them, the rustle of leaves in the wind lod wit the absence of travelers upon the road.

Travel was light these days, and those who did travel the road to Dargis were careful - more careful, perhaps, than was right. There were dangers on these roads, dangers that had not existed in patterns past. Something the Dwarven people had learned harshly, painfully.

Those travellers they did pass met their eyes with suspicion mirrored in their own, especially in light of the numerous weapons displayed. And indeed, they were an odd pair, this dwarven warrior and his quiet human companion.

Here and there were small trails that branched off, some clearly marked and others partially hidden, some wih signs of obvious recent use and others quickly becoming overgrown. Where they led was anybody's guess ...

ooc: I'll let you guys take the lead here, if you have any specific plans or ideas for this little man-hunt, let me know!

The road to Dargis was indeed a mysterious road to travel, and had been purposely developed by the Children of Cetheron to discourage unwanted travellers and adventurers from venturing forth within their realm. However the Hand of Cetheron worked both ways and it had been the human ranger’s lucky brightening stumbling upon one of the few members of the dwarfen race, in current times, to have actually travelled to the underground City of Dargis; and more importantly to have met a certain druid within the Dolwood. Therefore while it may have taken the short-lived human countless precise candlemarks trying every which way, trying to find the road to take the dwarfen hammer was like an arrow release towards its target; straight and true.

While marching in the mile eating stroll of an individual well versed in travelling long distance under their own power, the laird of Clan Minith soon turned his mind over to the nature and history of his fellow adventurer. Although humans were arguable the most numerous race found upon the Medonian Continent, perhaps the entire World of Telath, Coulter Minith’s experience in socializing with members of that short-lived race had been severally limited. Usually keeping to his own race, the black-bearded dwarf quickly decided that in order for this adventure to come to a successful conclusion than a greater understanding would be needed between both parties of this expedition.

Therefore never one to back down from a challenge and breaking the ice between both parties was a challenge, Coulter Minith would speck these words; spoken as always in his low rumbling voice, towards his human companion hoping to pass the time between journeying in conversion. ‘So laddie ye get ye self a family somewhere…’ This was the usually the first question asked between members of the Children of Cetheron meeting for the first time. It was a question designed to inform each other of their clan’s social standing within society and whom indeed was the more ‘important’. For a dwarf there was nothing more important than clan and blood.

Likely it would soon become apparent that although the two walked side by side down that road, the reality in which the two existed was so far apart that they might as well be walking in different worlds, and perhaps in some way they were.

The human matched his pace to that set by the dwarf, in no especial hurry to get where they were going and willing to be guided at least for now into the general area of where they were headed. For all the dwarfen declarations that one part of a forest might look like another, he hoped that there would be some recollection at least in terms of distances, for surely this was a road well travelled by his companion leading as it did within the dwarfen realm.

"Family?" he replied at length, the question catching him somewhat off guard. "No, I have no family that I know of." He spent a moment considering the implications of it for he was not entirely unaware of dwarfish expectations having lived among them for a short while now. "There are none that I know of as kin. Surely there might well be some somewhere, but likely not here in Medonia unless like me they had a taste for travelling. I would perhaps count instead the Guild as the closest I have as kin." He wondered what the dwarf might make of that, but surely it would not be so strange to him where clan might stand as strongly as kin, he thought.

"What of yourself? I know you've spoken of your clan and of Daltina, but I've had little contact with your race, and know little of your customs."

As the two companions shared in the small talk common of those who traveled together, the path continued on much as Oinos remembered it; the path itself rarely changed, though as of late the dangers inherent in that path had grown by leaps and bounds.

Here and there were signs of heavy travel - no surprise on the main road between two bustling cities.

What was surprising, however, were the littering of dead leaves along the side of the path here, tinged an unnatural red, nothing like those that fell in the autumn, they crunched beneath the boots of the two companions, and a chattering of an angry squirrel could be heard.

Nothing unusual in the squirrel at first thought, but first glance proved another story - the small woodland creatures were known as being timid, keeping out of sight of the larger folk. One raced across the path now, however, winding around the legs of SLon, rearing up on it's hind legs. It's fur was matted and dirty, the smell of decay permeating it's body, and it stared up at SLon with eyes far too intelligent for a simple woodland creature.

A gaping wound adorned the small animal's side, fur completely singed away and blood continuing to poor down it's side. It was a greviuos wound, but the small woodland creature seemed hindered by it not at all.

Small eyes turned toward Oinos now, taking him in from head to foot before the animal dashed back the way it had come, leaving a trail of blood in it's wake.

The reactions between races to such news were as different as night was to day. If Coulter Minith had heard news of such devastating importance from the mouth of a fellow Child of Cetheron instantly questions of blood kinsmen and vengeance would have been uttered, with firm hands placed upon well used handles. However for all there so called faults as a race, the dwarfen race was a somewhat close-knit race and as such looked after each other in a manner quite unfamiliar within the outside world.

Having spent a considerable amount of time travelling within and around the realm of Aelyria, Coulter Minith knew that such togetherness was not to be the case in regards to the majority of the human race. A human male, the young laird of Clan Minith knew, was lucky if he knew the names of his all his uncles and aunties, and while a dwarf could recite his/her linage back to their founding fathers, a human didn’t even consider learning the names of their great grandfather. Therefore the news, and especially the manner it which it was delivered, came as no surprise to the four-foot tall dwarf. Having already noticed the lack of importance human’s place upon family, and indeed the majority of races he had met upon his travels within the wider world as well, Coulter Minith knew it was one of the Children of Cetheron’s main strengths within a world filled with dangers and horrors a plenty.

Therefore having started this ling of conversation, the veteran hammer wasn’t at all surprised that his own clan had come up in conversation. Like any member of the dwarfen race Coulter Minith was extremely proud of not only his race in general but his own dwarfen clan. Waiting a few moments to collect his thoughts, stoking his black-beard in the process, the black-bearded dwarf would answer his human companion’s inquiry with these words; spoken as allows in his low rumbling voice.

‘Mee Clan is small what wee dwarfs’ call a minor one…aye’ve brother running aroun the place and blood kinsmen near Prime. Aye’ve an uncle, mee mum’s brother, in Arakmat as he’s a member of the Duerlagg…mee mum’s was original from that clan and as mee faffer’s faffer was a Copperhands ye could call them lot mee cousins…and than there the Thunderthighs…they mee clan’s sworn friends and allies and therefore as close to mee as blood kinsmen.’

The complex, inter mixing clan system of the dwarfen race was a difficult subject for most non-dwarfs to understand let alone figure out, and given the numerous cousins, second cousins and kinsmen of each particular clan most non-dwarfs couldn’t really see the point of bothering to learn them all. Therefore knowing that he was heading into uncharted waters and having already explained his immediate family Coulter Minith would turn the conversation over to answering the second part of the question posed to him; Daltina and his relationship with it.

‘Aaaa…Daltina. It’s a nice, good place ye ever been there…the place remembers it’s past and how it came to mee race’s aid in mee great, great, great grand father’s time. Aye lived and fought there for a time and remembers its ancient walls with fondest and it’s for that reason aye carry its badge upon mee...’ Not a truly impressive, or fabled worthy tale, but it was the truth and as such was emotional and important in its own way to the four-foot tall dwarfen adventurer. However before the young dwarf could finish his sentance the sight of a blood soaked squirrel stop him in mid sentence. Quickly placing his right hand upon one of his short-swords, Coulter Minith uttered a quick oath at such a unusual sight. 'What ye make of that laddie..?'

The details of dwarfen genealogy passed over the head of the ranger to a degree. He wasn't used to family, didn't understand how it worked and while sometimes he wondered about it, his experiences to date with relationships had made him more than somewhat leary of the concept as a whole.

Daltina therefore he was more interested in. The clan he had asked as a matter of politeness and because he imagined that the question was somewhat expected based on the little interaction he had noted between strange dwarfs. It was something of a relief to have the conversation turned instead to a subject which was more comfortable.

His response however was to be forestalled by the arrival of the squirrel, a creature which should have been dead by all rights, a creature which certainly should not have been roaming around. It raised feelings of disgust and dismay in his breast. The eyes were the worst of it, there was a presence there, he could describe it no other way in his mind, which did not belong with the beast. Bright and bold were squirrels but not like that. He watched it run, shocked for a moment and brought back to reality by his companion.

"I've never seen anything like it and I'm not sure that I want to, but I'm sorry if this interrupts us, but I cannot allow that to go untracked. There is something adrift here and I mean to get to the bottom of it." Did it concern their quest? It seemed an odd chance if it did not.

His bow was unslung, string stretched and arrow nocked with a skill of long practice which needed little of his attention to achieve.

"Do you think this is the doing of your druid?" He turned the old jest back on the dwarf, a moment of dark humour as he made ready to step off the path and follow the creature.

From nearby came the chattering of another of the small woodland creature, though not of the usual variety - this chattering seemed too high, filled with pain and almost ... terror. An odd sound to hear from a squirrel, but there was no other way to describe the sound.

As S'lon began his movement after the grotesque form of the earlier squirrel, they came upon this new sound rather quickly - their furry friend had another of his kind upon the ground, simply holding him there as he kept his teeth sunk into the creature's neck. It stopped it's struggles after only a moment, and the first squirrel, covered in more than it's own blood now, stood up on it's hind legs, furry paw covered in deep, rich blood as it moved to a nearby patch of dirt.

And into the dirt the creature did something no squirrel had any right doing. The blood formed seemingly random etchings where it dragged it's paw at first, until those etchings quickly formed the shapes of letters, and then a word.

Who?

The squirrel chattered randomly, circling around the body of it's dead comrade, it's gait strange and stiff.

There were many subject in which Coulter Minith had been known to put forward his views and thoughts, from ancient dwarfen history to current battle tactics, if the black-bearded dwarf thought he could add to a conversation he would. However upon the subject of arcana and all things mystical Coulter Minith would be the first to agree that there were probably plants out there that knew more upon the subject than he. Having been raised a dwarf within dwarfen society like every Child of Cetheron the world over, Coulter Minith had been raised to be mistrustful and weary of all things magical.

However although it was true that the young laird of Clan Minith knew next-to-nothing about how, or indeed why arcana worked; didn’t mean Coulter Minith was totally oblivious to the devastating results caused by it. Having been on the receiving end of a few magical attacks during his numerous brightenings of travelling and adventuring, the four-foot tall dwarfen adventurer was of the option that mages could, and usually did, do anything and everything that took their fancy. Indeed it seemed that ever since he had taken his first step upon the path of the warrior Coulter Minith had encountered his fair share of people misusing their mystical arts for their own benefits.

Therefore whether by choice or just a slight unwise slip of the tongue, his human companion had uttered words that were somewhat insulting and taboo to the inbred traditional beliefs of the dwarfen race. However it appeared to be S’Lon’s lucky brightening as today Coulter Minith had bigger issues to deal with, than informing an uninformed human upon the dwarfen race’s held views upon all things arcana and why magical users were strange and definitely crazy…indeed the human male didn’t know how very, very lucky he was.

The scene that had captured the black-bearded dwarf’s attendance so firmly as to stop a lecture on dwarfen culture was the most unusual scene of a what appeared to be a talking squirrel. Never being one not willing to get stuck-in whenever the opportunity presented itself, Coulter Minith effortlessly unsheathed one of his short-swords, while moving his Daltina crested shield into a more defensive position, covering the majority of his stout dwarfen body. Within a defensive posture ignoring the badly timed jest of his human companion, but not forgetting it, Coulter Minith would say without taking his eyes of the unusual scene before him these words; spoken as always in his low rumbling voice with just a hint of excitement creeping through.

‘Laddie aye’ve been chasing and killing deadlier animal than that since before ye grand faffer was in nappies…but aye’ve never seen anything like that…lead on and we’ll see what else this thrice cursed woods has to offer…’

Waiting for his partner in crime to make the first move the wintry grey coloured eyes of Coulter Minith would remain locked upon the unholy scene playing across his eyes, waiting for any sign of movement and any opportunity to assist his fellow adventurer.

Oblivious to the mental contortions and issues of his companion, S'Lon moved swiftly but cautiously towards the new sounds, fast enough to get there in a timely fashion but no panicked rush into something dangerous.

What awaited him there was beyond his experience, not having the advantage of a dwarfen lifetime, but even so there were some things which fell together into a neat but ugly pattern. The bow was not probably a very good weapon in the circumstance, but fortunately his companion's choice of weapon was better.

"Who?" He mouthed the word more than spoke it. What did the creature mean? Who were they? Who did they seek? Why was the creature, it seemed wrong to call it a squirrel even in his mind, asking the question anyway?

One thing seemed certain, or perhaps not. The druid they sought was an unlikely candidate for being necromancer as well. Possible, entirely possible, but in these woods?

He could think of no other answer. And if it were the druid they sought whick controled this creature then perhaps his companion had already been recognised.

"Cletus" he replied, slacking off the tension on his bow and trusting Coulter to deal with it if need be.

The animal stopped it's chattering, peering up at SLon with perhaps too much intelligence for the eyes of a squirrel. The forest was silent around them -- eerily so, as the squirrel continued to eye the human.

Finally, it moved in it's slow, ungaingly fashion, eding to the side so it stood before Coulter, rearing up on it's hind legs and peering at the dwarf, head cocked to the side, as if waiting for something.

This particular brightening was perhaps the strangest brightening the laird of Clan Minith had ever experienced during his century and a half of life, and if anything it seemed to be getting stranger and stranger with each passing moment. The brightening had started so well for Coulter Minith with a tankard of good old fashion ale and a hearty breakfast, but all that had changed with the appearance of his human companion and the start of this most unusual of adventures. Instead of having a quiet brightening of relaxation and rest, the four-foot tall dwarfen warrior found himself being confronted by an undead squirrel; which wasn’t something that one sees every brightening, and Coulter Minith wasn’t really sure what he was supposed to do next.

With the mysterious Dolwoods not too far away, the usually confident and cocksure dwarfen hammer was in some quagmire at what his next course of action should be given the unusual situation he found himself in. The Dolwoods were a thrice cursed place within dwarfen society and history, with its creations having caused more deaths within the stout, bearded ranks of the Children of Cetheron than anyone of the numerous wars fought by the dwarfen race throughout the ages. It was therefore understandable for Coulter Minith to feel somewhat apprehensive at the thought of confronting something obviously not natural near to such a godforsaken place.

Therefore totally at a loss at what he should do next; it was obvious to the black-bearded dwarfen adventurer that his human companion didn’t want to kill this strange creature straight away, and for this reason Coulter Minith took a step backwards gaining some distance between himself and the creature. While stepping backwards the four-foot tall dwarf would bring around his metal round-shield placing it between himself and the undead squirrel, ready to block any physical attacks by this most unusual of creatures.

Prepared as fully as he could be given the situation he was in, the young laird of Clan Minith would continue to maintain eye connect with the bloody squirrel waiting for any sudden movements. Knowing that he had to do something in order to break the ice, so to speck, Coulter Minith would speck this word in a low, anger filled voice convoying all manner of death and destruction he was capable of doing. ‘What…’

The situation did not become any more clear and if anything he was more confused than ever.

Keeping one eye on the squirrel but trusting Coulter to do what needed doing with the damnable thing, he scanned the forest around them, both with his eyes and with those deeper eyes as he sought clara and the insight it might offer him. He wanted to know what was in the forest around him and he knew that the trick She had taught him of scanning whilst touching the plane of nature and yet not actually casting might well tell him more that his eyes could.
